It was pitch dark. Every bump in the road jolted through my back like a punch. The metal pressed against my shoulder; the air was suffocating. My mom’s arm was wrapped around me, tighter every time the car slowed. I could hear her fast, shallow breathing, trying not to cry.
The boot was barely big enough for the two of us. We had squeezed in with only a bag of clothes and a bottle of water, and already it felt like the air was running out. Dad hadn’t fit it. He’d stayed behind in the storage room at the school off Claire’s office. We’d been there for two weeks: curled on top of dusty boxes, listening for footsteps, waiting for someone to open the door and discover us. It had been safer than the street. But not safe enough to stay.
Now it was Claire driving us. Her husband was at home, keeping their life looking normal. She’d promised to bring Dad tomorrow after work. Another trip might arise suspicion.
Every time the tyres changed sound, I thought it was the end. Asphalt, then gravel, then the faint shudder of a stop. My throat closed. Would someone make her pull over? Would they open the boot? The thought of the lid lifting made my skin prickle and my heart pound so hard it hurt.
