Author’s Note

Thanks for giving the story a try! This is a slower-burn haremlit romance than some of my previous work, with a bigger focus on building the characters, friendships, and family dynamics before the relationships really take off.

If you enjoy the story, I’d really appreciate your comments. Constructive feedback is always welcome, especially if there’s something you think could make the story stronger. I read every comment and many of the improvements in later chapters come directly from reader suggestions.

Thank you for reading!

Isabella stepped out of her front door into the late-afternoon light and crossed the quiet street toward the Rajesh house. A gentle smile played on her lips. Having Daniela back felt like a small miracle. She and Carla had been best friends since they were teenagers, closer than sisters. They had shared everything, including a few secret, passionate years together before life pulled them in different directions. Carla had met her husband, and Isabella had met Ricardo. The romance between the two women had gently faded into deep friendship, but the bond had never broken. When Carla and her family moved to Miami right after Daniela graduated, it left a quiet ache in Isabella’s heart. Now, watching Sofia and Layla grow so close reminded her so much of her own youth with Carla.

She reached the Rajesh front door and knocked. Latha opened it almost immediately, her face glowing with happiness.

The house smelled wonderful, rich with spices and the comforting aroma of fresh rice. Rajesh came out from the living room, looking relaxed. A moment later Kumar appeared behind him.

He was taller than Isabella had expected, with broad shoulders and the easy posture of someone who had spent years playing sports. His hair was still a little damp from a shower, and he wore a simple gray t-shirt and jeans. When he saw her, he gave a polite smile and stepped forward.

“Señora Morales,” he said, his voice calm and warm. “It is nice to meet you. Amma has told me a lot about you and Sofia.”

He shook her hand with a firm but gentle grip. When Latha started talking about his flight, Kumar listened attentively, nodding at the right moments instead of jumping in. His answers were short, calm, and thoughtful.

“You must still be tired,” Isabella said.

“A little,” Kumar replied with a small smile. “The nap helped. Thank you for coming over.”

Latha beamed and patted her son’s arm. “He is already complaining that I cooked too much. As if I could forget how much my boy eats after three years away.”

Kumar rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish smile tugging at his lips when Latha teased him about eating too much. He didn’t defend himself loudly or try to change the subject. He just took the gentle scolding with quiet amusement. Isabella’s smile widened. She already liked him.

They settled in the living room with cups of Latha’s ginger chai. Isabella took a sip and sighed happily.

“I had the best surprise this morning,” she told them. “My best friend Carla’s daughter, Daniela, arrived completely unannounced. She has finished college and decided to spend the whole summer here with us. You should have seen Sofia’s face when she ran in and saw her. Pure joy.”

Latha leaned forward, curious. “Daniela? We have not met her yet.”

“She is like family,” Isabella explained. “She went to the same school as Sofia and Layla - only she graduated four years back. She was the big star here. You know ... one of those girls who walks into a room and somehow makes everybody happier. I spent the most wonderful afternoon watching the three of them together. Daniela is so good with them. I am really hoping she will be a positive influence this summer. The girls need someone like her.”

Kumar listened quietly, nodding.

Isabella turned to him with a playful smile. “You should be warned, Kumar. Sofia, Layla and, Daniela are in full charm mode today. They have been planning how to make your summer tutoring sessions very ... interesting.”

Rajesh chuckled. “I wish I were twenty years younger. I would volunteer to be the tutor myself.”

Latha swatted his arm. “Oh really?”

Isabella laughed and gave Rajesh a teasing look. “Careful what you wish for, Rajesh. I am still available, you know. You have never even made a proper move on me so far. All these years and nothing. The other ladies there are starting to talk.”

Rajesh’s ears turned red. He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Latha burst out laughing. “Look at him. Caught completely. Serves you right for trying to act too smart.”

Kumar smiled, clearly enjoying his father’s discomfort.

Isabella kept going, her eyes sparkling. “Poor Rajesh. If you cannot even handle one old flirt like me, what chance do you have with two beautiful eighteen-year-olds like Sofia and Layla?”

Rajesh tried to retreat. “Now wait a minute...”

“Oh no,” Latha cut in, grinning. “You started this. Now you must face the consequences.”

The two ladies teased Rajesh mercilessly until he raised both hands in surrender, laughing along with them. Even Kumar let out a soft chuckle.

Isabella was still smiling when they heard voices and laughter approaching the front door. The sound of heels on the pathway, giggles, and overlapping conversation grew louder.

Latha stood up. “That must be the girls.”

Kumar turned toward the door, curious.

The front door opened.

— The front door opened with a burst of laughter and energy.

Sofia and Layla stepped inside first, and for a second Kumar was taken aback. He had been prepared for pretty girls. He had not been prepared for this much confidence aimed directly at him.

They were dressed to kill. Sofia wore a short white sundress that hugged her curves and showed off her sun-kissed legs. Her long dark hair fell in loose waves over one shoulder. Layla was in a fitted coral top and a short flowy skirt that moved with her dancer’s hips. Both girls glowed with confidence and mischief as they walked in.

His mother lit up like someone had turned on every light in the house.

“My kuttis!” Latha exclaimed, opening her arms wide. Sofia and Layla went straight to her, hugging her tightly like they had done it a thousand times before. Rajesh stood up with a big grin and ruffled Layla’s hair.

“There are my troublemakers,” he said affectionately. “Did you behave today or did you leave a trail of broken hearts again?”

Layla laughed and leaned into his side. “Only a few, Tio. We saved the best trouble for Kumar.”

Sofia gave his father a quick hug too. “We brought extra mangoes for you from our tree. Mama said you like them sweet.”

Kumar watched the whole exchange with quiet fascination. His parents were completely wrapped around these two girls’ fingers. They weren’t just neighbors’ daughters. They were family. His father, who was usually reserved, looked softer and happier than Kumar had seen him in years. His mother kept touching their arms and faces like she could not get enough of them.

And they really were stunning.

Sofia smiled at his father, her expressive eyes and full lips made the whole room feel warmer. Layla moved with natural, confident grace, her short skirt swaying with every step. Kumar had to remind himself to breathe. These two weren’t just pretty, they were magnetic...

Then both girls turned their attention to him.

Sofia tilted her head, a sweet but dangerous little smile playing on her lips. “So you’re the famous Kumar. We’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Only good things, I hope,” Kumar replied, meeting her eyes with a calm smile.

Layla stepped closer, looking him up and down openly. “We saw your photos. You clean up nice. But we’re going to have to do something about those clothes if you’re going to be seen with us in public.”

Kumar raised an eyebrow, amused. “Already planning my makeover? I’ve only known you for thirty seconds.”

“Thirty seconds is plenty,” Sofia said sweetly. “We work fast.”

He chuckled. “Should I be worried?”

“Very,” Layla answered, flashing him a wicked grin. “We’re excellent at getting what we want.”

Kumar held her gaze, letting a small, confident smile touch his lips. “Good. I like a challenge.”

The banter flowed easily. He gave as good as he got, teasing them right back, and he could tell they were surprised he wasn’t flustered. Sofia’s eyes sparkled with interest. Layla looked delighted, like she had just found a new favorite toy.

Then something made him glance toward the doorway.

Daniela was leaning casually against the frame, arms crossed, watching the whole scene with an amused smile. Kumar’s eyes widened in genuine surprise and delight.

“Daniela?” he said, his voice warm with recognition.

The room went still for half a second.

Daniela’s smile grew slow and playful. “Hi, stranger. Small world, huh? I was waiting for your call, you know!”

Kumar let out a surprised laugh, his eyes lighting up. “You gave me the number five hours ago. I was planning to call tomorrow like a normal person.”

“Normal is boring,” Daniela shot back, stepping fully into the room.

Latha looked between them, eyebrows raised. “Wait ... you two already know each other?”

Sofia and Layla exchanged a quick, delighted glance.

“Oh my god,” Layla blurted out. “This is the guy? The fascinating one from the plane? The one you kept smiling about all afternoon?”

Sofia nodded eagerly. “You said he was tall, smart, and ridiculously charming. You literally gave him our home number!”

Daniela’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “Girls!”

Kumar’s grin widened, clearly enjoying her discomfort. “Ridiculously charming? That’s a new one. I’ll take it.”

Daniela pointed at him in mock warning. “Don’t let it go to your head, professor. I was stuck on a plane for hours. My standards were low.”

“Low enough to give me your number and tell me not to disappear,” Kumar replied smoothly, tilting his head. “I remember that part very clearly.”

Latha and Isabella burst out laughing. Rajesh shook his head with amusement.

“Look at that,” Rajesh said. “Not even one full day in Tegucigalpa and he already has girls giving him numbers on planes. I really am getting old. It took me ten visits to Latha’s house for her to let me take her out for a coffee date.”

“That’s because you are bad at flirting chellam,” giggled Latha. “Learn from your son.”

“Es verdad!” chuckled Isabella. “It took you almost a year for you to give me a compliment Rajesh.”

“I surrender! Peace!” laughed Rajesh as he put his hands up.

Everyone laughed seeing how easily Rajesh capitulated to Latha and Isabella.

Daniela was the first to recover as she walked over to give Latha a warm hug. “Tía Latha, it’s so nice to finally meet you properly. Tia Bella has told me so much about you and Rajesh. Thank you for taking such good care of her and the girls.”

Latha hugged her back tightly. “Any friend of Bella’s is family. And if you already know my son, then you really are family now.”

The banter flowed easily after that. Daniela fit right in, teasing Kumar about his “respectful gentleman act” on the plane while he fired back about her airport violence threats and how she charmed a stranger out of his window seat. Sofia and Layla kept jumping in with questions, clearly thrilled by the unexpected connection.

Eventually the conversation circled back to Kumar’s clothes.

Latha looked him up and down with clear disapproval. “Kumar, those jeans are fine, but the rest of your clothes ... Ayyo, what have you been wearing in America? Old t-shirts and those horrible shorts with holes? No. Absolutely not.”

Kumar glanced down at himself. “They’re comfortable.”

“They’re tragic,” Layla declared.

Sofia nodded solemnly. “We can’t be seen with you like this. People will think we adopted a stray.”

Kumar raised an eyebrow. “I’ve survived twenty-five years without your fashion advice.”

“And it shows,” Daniela added sweetly.

Latha clapped her hands once, decision made. “Girls, you are taking him shopping right now. All of you. Isabella’s SUV is big enough. Make him buy proper clothes for Tegucigalpa. And since you are helping him, he can buy something nice for each of you as repayment for your expert fashion advice.”

Kumar opened his mouth to protest. “Amma, I don’t need...”

“No arguments,” Latha cut in firmly. “You are going. Rajesh, give him the card and the car keys.”

Rajesh pulled out his wallet without hesitation and handed it over with a grin. “Good luck, son. You are outnumbered.”

Kumar looked at the three smiling girls then at his mother’s determined face, and sighed in defeat.

“Fine,” he said. “But I’m driving.”

Layla laughed. “This is going to be fun.”

The girls immediately started herding him toward the door, already arguing about which mall to visit first and what styles would look best on him. Kumar glanced back at his parents with a helpless expression, but he was smiling.

As they stepped outside into the evening light, Kumar felt something shift inside his chest. For the first time since landing, the heavy fog of jet lag and the quiet ache from his breakup felt lighter.

These three were going to be trouble. But he was surprised to realize he didn’t mind at all.

— The SUV lurched forward again and then stalled with a sickening jerk halfway up yet another steep hill. The engine died. Behind him, someone honked.

Kumar gripped the steering wheel tighter, jaw clenched. “Give me a second.”

From the passenger seat, Daniela let out a low, amused laugh. Her tight white tank top was doing absolutely nothing to hide her deep cleavage. She had one long, toned leg crossed over the other, her foot tapping lazily against the dashboard.

“Want me to take over, professor?” she asked sweetly, resting her hand on his thigh for just a second too long. “I promise I’m very gentle with stick shifts.”

In the back seat, Sofia and Layla dissolved into giggles.

“Third time on this hill,” Layla sang out. “At this rate we’ll reach the mall next week.”

Sofia leaned forward between the seats, her breath warm against his ear. “It’s okay, Kumar. We like a man who struggles a little. Makes him more ... relatable.”

Kumar let out a slow breath and restarted the engine, determined not to stall again. The clutch felt alien under his foot after years of driving automatics in the US. The hill was brutal, the kind of incline that made even experienced drivers sweat in Tegucigalpa.

“Come on,” he muttered, easing the clutch out slowly while giving gas.

The car rolled backward half a meter before he caught it. More giggles erupted from the back.

“Careful!” Daniela teased, pressing her hand to her chest dramatically. “If you keep doing that, I might have to climb into your lap and show you how it’s done. For safety reasons, of course.”

Kumar shot her a look. Her top had slipped slightly lower. She made no move to fix it. In fact, she arched her back a little, clearly enjoying herself.

“You’re enjoying this way too much,” he said dryly.

“Immensely,” Daniela admitted with a wicked grin. “You’re all serious and focused. It’s adorable. Also very hot.”

“Focus on the road, not her boobs,” Layla called from behind. “Though I don’t blame you. They are impressive.”

“Layla!” Sofia gasped, half-laughing.

“What? It’s true. Daniela’s been weaponizing them since we left the house. I almost feel bad for him. It’s amazing that he’s survived without any ... accidents ... so far.”

“Ha ha ... You guys are hilarious,” deadpanned Kumar.

The girls giggled uncontrollably.

Kumar finally got the car moving forward again. The engine whined but held. He let out a small breath of relief as they crested the hill.

“See?” he said, trying to sound confident. “I’ve got it now.”

“Mm-hmm,” Daniela hummed, shifting in her seat so her bare thigh brushed against his hand on the gear lever. “Very impressive recovery. Though if you stall one more time, I’m taking the wheel. And I look much better doing it.”
