Rajesh’s booming voice and Yasmine’s laughter drifted in from the driveway. A moment later, they heard car doors closing and Latha calling out something to the men to carry the leftovers they’d brought home.

Kumar looked toward the front door. “They’re back.”

“Already?” Sofia asked.

She was sitting beside Layla on the couch, their hands clasped together. They had barely finished talking about Charleston. Less than an hour ago, all four of them had been lying together, promising that they would make things work. Now, with their parents walking toward the house, the whole arrangement suddenly seemed much harder.

“Do we really have to tell them tonight?” Sofia asked. “Can’t we wait until tomorrow? Or next week? We could just keep things the way they are for a little longer.”

Kumar turned toward her. “Sofia, chellam, we agreed we’d tell them tomorrow. But now that everyone’s here together...”

“I know, papi.” She looked miserable. “I know what we agreed to. I just don’t want to do it yet.”

“Neither do I,” Layla muttered. “Fuck. I really thought I could handle this.”

Daniela stood beside Kumar, watching the two younger girls. She hadn’t said much since they’d heard the cars pulling into the driveway.

“Chicas, we don’t have to rush...”

“No, Daniela.” Layla shook her head. “That’s not what I’m saying. We agreed to it. I know why we have to do it. But now we’re actually going to stand here while everyone congratulates you for being his girlfriend. It feels wrong!”

Daniela looked down. Kumar moved closer to the couch.

“Layla, please. Daniela isn’t any more my girlfriend than you or Sofia. You know that.”

“I know, papi!”

“Then why are you taking it out on her?”

Layla opened her mouth, then closed it again. Sofia squeezed her hand.

“Hermana, don’t. Please. We promised.”

Layla looked away, blinking rapidly. “It’s just so fucking unfair.”

He crouched in front of them. “Look at me, both of you.”

Sofia raised her eyes first. Layla took a little longer. “Nothing changes between us. Not tonight, not tomorrow, not when we get to Charleston. Daniela isn’t replacing either of you. She’s doing this for all of us. We talked about that, remember?”

Sofia nodded.

“Do you trust me?” he asked.

“Of course I do, papi.”

“Layla?”

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Yes,” she whispered. “Of course I trust you.”

Kumar took her free hand. “And do you still want to be with me?”

Layla stared at him and then frowned. “Are you seriously asking me that? Again?”

He held his arms up. “Sorry. I had to check.”

She rolled her eyes. “If you ask me that one more time, I am going to hit you.”

Sofia and Daniela giggled.

“Basta.” Sofia took a breath and looked at Daniela. “Dani, I’m sorry. We’re being horrible.”

Daniela shook her head. “No, bebé. I understand. If I had to stand there and watch everyone celebrate one of you as Kumar’s girlfriend while pretending I was just a friend, I’d hate it too.”

Layla said nothing, but she reached out and caught Daniela’s hand when the older girl moved closer. Daniela squeezed it. For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Kumar stood up. “All right. We can do this.”

Daniela gave a nervous laugh. She smoothed the front of her skirt, then did it again. Kumar noticed that her fingers were trembling.

He took her hand. “Hey.”

She looked up.

“You okay?”

“No,” she whispered, then managed a small smile. “But ask me again in five minutes.”

He kissed her cheek. “We’re in this together.”

She kissed him back. “Siempre, mi amor.”

“We’re back!” Latha called from the entrance.

Kumar took a deep breath. “Amma! Appa! We’re in the living room.”

Rajesh came in first, wiping his forehead with a handkerchief. “Ayyo! What a night! I don’t understand this weather. We had the air conditioning running the whole way home, and I’m still sweating.”

“Ay, Rajesh!” Isabella laughed as she followed him inside. “You’ve lived in so many tropical countries. Surely you’ve survived worse than this.”

“Bella, that’s not the point. If you stub your toe, does remembering that you once broke your leg make it hurt any less?”

Omar chuckled. “He’s right, you know.”

“Thank you!” Rajesh pointed at him. “Finally, somebody understands!”

“Don’t encourage him, Omar,” Yasmine said, laughing.

Latha walked in behind them. “Rajesh, will you stop complaining? We’ve been listening to you all the way home.”

“Amma, Appa!” Kumar called again.

His mother looked up curiously. “Enna, kanna? What happened?”

“Nothing happened. We just wanted to talk to everyone.”

Rajesh stopped wiping his forehead. “Talk? About what?”

Kumar glanced toward Daniela.

Latha followed his gaze, then looked at Sofia and Layla sitting together on the couch looking glum. “Oh, dear. Is everything all right?”

“Of course, Amma,” Kumar said.

“Then why do you all look so serious?”

Isabella had noticed it too. Sofia looked as though she’d been crying, and Layla was sitting unusually quietly beside her.

“Mi amor?” she asked, approaching her daughter. “Are you okay?”

“Sí, Mamá. I’m fine.”

Yasmine looked at Layla.

“And you, sweetheart? You were so happy when we called this morning. Did something happen while we were gone?”

“No. Everything’s fine.”

Rajesh looked from one face to another. “All right, now I’m getting worried. Kumar, what have you done?”

“Why do you think I’ve done something?”

“What? You call all of us in here looking like somebody died. What am I supposed to think?”

Isabella and Latha nudged him.

That earned a small laugh from Sofia. “Nothing bad happened, Tio,” she assured him.

“Good! Then somebody please tell me what’s going on.”

Kumar looked at Daniela again. She gave him a tiny nod. He slipped his arm around her waist, drawing her closer. “Actually, we have some good news.”

Latha’s expression changed immediately. “Oh?”

Kumar cleared his throat. “Daniela and I have been spending a lot of time together, as you all know.”

The parents nodded.

“Yes, kanna. We do know that,” Latha said.

“Well...” Kumar glanced at Daniela, who was smiling nervously. “We’ve realized that we have feelings for each other. And we’ve decided we’d like to start dating.”

For a moment, nobody said anything. Latha stared at them for a second before her face lit up. “REALLY?”

Kumar barely had time to nod before his mother squealed. “Oh, my kannas!”

She hurried across the room and pulled Daniela into a hug. “Daniela! My sweet girl! Oh, this is wonderful!”

“Thank you, Tía!” Daniela laughed as Latha kissed both her cheeks.

Latha pulled back and looked at Kumar. “You! Come here!”

“Amma!”

She caught him by the arm and pulled him into the hug too. “Oh, I’m so happy! Both of you!”

Rajesh started laughing. “Well, well, well! Look at that!”

He clapped Kumar on the shoulder. “My son finally has a girlfriend! After one whole year of moping around.”

Latha was still hugging Daniela.

“Oh, kanna, you have no idea how happy you’ve made me. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer girl for my Kumar.”

Daniela smiled, but her eyes flickered toward the couch. Sofia was looking down at her hands. Layla had put an arm around her shoulders.

Nobody else seemed to notice. Rajesh pulled Daniela into a bear hug, making her squeal.

“My dear girl, congratulations!”

“Thank you, Tio!”

He grinned at her. “Now, I must warn you. My son is a very good boy, but he has one terrible habit.”

Kumar groaned.

“He thinks too much!”

Daniela burst out laughing. “Oh, I know!”

“See?” Rajesh turned triumphantly toward Latha. “She already knows!”

“Every little thing becomes a big discussion with him. Ask him what he wants for breakfast, and he’ll explain the nutritional benefits of four different options before choosing idli.”

“That’s not true!”

“It is absolutely true,” Latha said.

Daniela was laughing harder now. “Don’t worry, Tio. I know how to handle him.”

“Oh? Tell me!”

“I just kiss him until he stops talking.”

There was a moment of surprised silence. Then Rajesh threw his head back and roared with laughter.

“HA! Excellent! Latha, did you hear that? Daniela has already figured him out!”

Isabella teased. “Seems like he’s not very different from his father, right, Latha?”

Latha chuckled and nodded.

Omar stepped forward next. “Felicidades, mijo!”

He shook Kumar’s hand, then pulled him into a hug.

“This is wonderful news! I’m very happy for you both.”

“Thank you, Tio.”

Omar turned to Daniela. “And you, beautiful girl! Come here!”

He embraced her warmly. “You’ve chosen a good man, Daniela. I hope you two will be very happy together.”

“Thank you, Tio Omar.”

Yasmine was waiting beside him. “Oh, sweetheart!” She hugged Daniela. “Congratulations!”

“Thank you, Tía.”

Yasmine smiled at Kumar. “Well, well. Our handsome professor has finally found himself a girlfriend!”

She glanced toward Layla, who was watching Daniela receive another round of congratulations. Her daughter’s smile looked a little strained.

Yasmine knew Layla adored Kumar. She’d noticed how excited the girl became whenever he visited, how often she talked about him, and how she always found some excuse to spend time with him. Perhaps she’d developed a little crush on him.

Yasmine felt a moment of sympathy. It couldn’t be easy watching a man you admired start dating someone else, especially when that someone was one of your closest friends.

But Layla was young. She would get over it. And Daniela and Kumar did make a lovely couple.

Yasmine decided she’d have a quiet word with her daughter later. Then she remembered something.

“Oh, Kumar! Have you thought about how you’re going to tell Zara?”

Kumar closed his eyes. “Oh, God. Not this again.”

Layla burst out laughing. “OH, YES! Zara is going to freak out!”

Sofia started giggling too.

Yasmine was already laughing. “My little Zara is going to be heartbroken!”

“She’s TEN!” Kumar protested.

“And very much in love with you,” Omar added solemnly.

“Not you too, Tio!”

“Oh, yes!” Layla was laughing so hard she had to lean against Sofia. “Professor, you’re in so much trouble! The last time he came to our house, Zara wouldn’t let him leave! She made him sit through an entire tea party!”

That finished Rajesh. He bent over laughing. “My son! A prisoner of a ten-year-old girl! And now you’re breaking her heart!”

Kumar looked around helplessly. “Are you all enjoying this?”

“Very much!” Rajesh declared.

Layla came over and slipped her arm through Kumar’s. “Poor Zara. She’s going to tear up your picture.”

Sofia joined them on his other side. “You’d better hire security before we go back to the club.”

“She’ll challenge Daniela to a duel!” Rajesh announced.

Daniela raised an eyebrow. “Oh, I’m not afraid of a little competition.”

Everyone laughed again.

For a few minutes, Sofia and Layla forgot how miserable they’d been feeling. Kumar’s embarrassment was simply too entertaining to resist.

Sofia leaned against his shoulder, laughing as Rajesh suggested that Kumar should send Zara a resignation letter from his position as her future husband.

Layla leaned against his other shoulder. Her laughter was genuine, but her fingers were gripping his arm tightly.

Kumar wanted to pull both girls close and kiss them properly. He wanted to tell everyone that they were his girlfriends too, that Daniela wasn’t the only woman he loved.

Instead, he stood there smiling while his parents celebrated a relationship that was only part of the truth.

Across the room, Isabella was watching.

She had been delighted by Kumar and Daniela’s announcement. Daniela was family, and Isabella had always liked Kumar. He was kind, intelligent, respectful, and clearly cared about all three girls.

Until tonight, Isabella had assumed the four were simply close friends. She knew Sofia and Layla adored Kumar, and she’d sometimes wondered whether either girl had developed feelings for him. But she’d never seriously considered that Kumar might be romantically interested in one of them.

And she certainly hadn’t expected him to choose Daniela.

But something else bothered her.

Daniela should have been thrilled. Instead, Isabella had caught her looking toward Sofia and Layla several times, almost as though she was waiting for their approval.

And Sofia and Layla?

They were laughing now, hanging off Kumar’s arms and teasing him with everyone else. Yet when the laughter died down, they kept looking at each other.

Isabella had seen Sofia squeeze Layla’s hand earlier. She’d also noticed how quickly both girls had looked away when Latha started congratulating Daniela.

Poor things, she thought.

Perhaps they were jealous. It wouldn’t be the first time three close friends had fallen for the same man. Still, there was something about the way Daniela kept watching them that Isabella couldn’t quite understand.

“All right, all right!” she called, smiling. “Leave the poor boy alone. You’re going to embarrass him into running away!”

“He’s not going anywhere!” Latha declared happily.

She turned to Rajesh. “Rajesh, bring out that nice bottle of port we’ve been saving.”

Rajesh grinned. “Ah! Now you’re talking!”

“Tonight,” Latha announced, “we’re celebrating Kumar and Daniela!”

Everyone cheered. Kumar slipped his arm around Daniela’s waist again, and she leaned against him. Sofia and Layla clapped along with the others.

Rajesh poured the port for the adults while Omar offered another blessing. Latha wanted to know how long Kumar and Daniela had been interested in each other, and Yasmine immediately asked whether Daniela’s parents knew.

Kumar and Daniela exchanged a quick glance.

“Not yet,” Daniela admitted.

“Oh, we must tell them!” Latha exclaimed.

“Amma, please!” Kumar laughed nervously. “Can we tell them ourselves?”

“Of course, kanna! Of course!”

Rajesh shook his head.

“Let the children enjoy themselves, Latha. They’ve only just told us.”

“All right, all right. I won’t interfere.”

The evening continued like that, with congratulations, teasing, and stories about Kumar and Daniela. The parents were delighted, and the two of them did their best to answer questions without saying anything that might lead to more questions.

Sofia and Layla stayed together. They joined the laughter and smiled whenever someone looked their way.

But every time Latha hugged Daniela, Sofia felt a little worse. Every time someone called Daniela Kumar’s girlfriend, Layla had to remind herself not to react.

And every time Kumar looked toward them, he wished he could do something to make the hurt disappear.

As far as their parents knew, Kumar and Daniela had just announced the beginning of a lovely new romance.

The night was still warm as the four women walked back to Isabella’s house. The celebration had gone on longer than anyone expected.

Sofia and Layla walked ahead, holding hands and talking quietly to each other. Daniela followed a few steps behind with Isabella. Every now and then, Daniela tried to catch their attention, but neither girl looked back.

“Chicas, I was thinking we could go shopping tomorrow,” Daniela offered. “Maybe get a few things before Kumar leaves?”

Sofia shook her head without turning around.

“No, gracias. We have to study for the SAT.”

“Yeah, we’re busy,” Layla added. “Not everyone gets to spend the whole day with her boyfriend.”

“Layla!” Sofia whispered.

“Qué?”

“Por favor.”

Layla looked away, but she didn’t apologize. Daniela stopped smiling.

“I was only asking,” Daniela said quietly.

“Well, now you know,” Layla muttered.

“Layla, please. You know I didn’t ask for this.”

“I know, Dani. That’s what makes it worse.”

Sofia squeezed Layla’s hand and hurried her along.

Isabella had been listening to the exchange.

She moved closer to Daniela and put an arm around her shoulders.

“Hola, mi amor.”

Daniela looked up.

“Congratulations again, sweetheart. I don’t think I got a chance to say much earlier with Latha and Rajesh making such a fuss.”

Daniela managed a smile.

“Thanks, Tía Bella.”

“I’m happy for you, you know. Kumar is a good man, and you two make a lovely couple.”

“Thank you.”

Her eyes returned to Sofia and Layla.

Isabella noticed. “Is everything okay between you girls?”

Daniela hesitated. “Of course, Tía.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. We’re fine.”

Isabella looked toward her daughter, who was still walking with Layla.

“Did they take the news badly?”

Daniela shook her head quickly. “No! No, it’s not that.”

“Then what is it?”

“Nothing, Tía. Really. They’re just tired. After everything that happened at the party, it’s been an emotional day. After everything that happened with Miguel and Diego. We had a lovely day with Kumar, but I think it’s all catching up with them.”

Isabella didn’t believe her, but she let it go. She gave Daniela’s shoulder a gentle squeeze, and they continued walking.

By the time they reached the house, Sofia and Layla had already gone inside.

Isabella locked the front door while the girls said their goodnights. She expected them to head upstairs together to Daniela’s bedroom, as they usually did.

Tonight, however, Sofia and Layla headed toward Sofia’s downstairs bedroom. Daniela followed them.

“Chicas?”

Sofia stopped at her bedroom door. “Yes?”

Daniela looked between them. “Are you coming upstairs tonight? I thought we could talk for a while. You know, about everything that happened today.”

Sofia glanced at Layla. Layla looked away.

“Sorry, Dani. We’ve got a lot of SAT preparation tomorrow, and we’re exhausted. I think we’ll just sleep here tonight.”

Daniela nodded slowly. “Oh. Okay.”

“Layla’s sleeping with me tonight,” Sofia added.

“Right.”

Daniela waited, hoping one of them would say something else. Neither did.

“Well...” She tried to smile. “Good night, then.”

“Good night, Dani.”

Layla said nothing. Sofia went into her room, and Layla followed her. A moment later, the door closed. Daniela stood there for a few seconds, staring at it. She raised her hand as though she might knock, then lowered it again.

“Okay,” she whispered.

She turned and walked toward the stairs.

Isabella had watched the exchange from the hallway. She’d been about to head to her own room when she heard Daniela asking the girls to come upstairs. Now she stood quietly, wondering what on earth had happened.

Sofia had barely looked at Daniela. Layla hadn’t even said good night. That wasn’t like either of them.

Isabella watched Daniela climb the stairs with her head down. Something was very wrong. She waited until Daniela had disappeared upstairs before following her.

For some time, Isabella had suspected that the girls were closer than they let on. She knew how affectionate Sofia and Daniela were with each other, and she’d noticed how comfortable Layla had become around them. The three were always hugging, kissing cheeks, and finding excuses to spend time together.

Isabella wasn’t naive. She remembered being their age, and she remembered her own experiences with Carla when they were young. She’d sometimes wondered whether Sofia and Daniela’s affection had gone beyond ordinary closeness.

But she’d never had a reason to interfere. The girls were happy, they trusted one another, and whatever they did in private was their business.

Now she wasn’t so sure.

Had Sofia and Daniela become romantically involved? Was Sofia upset because Daniela had chosen Kumar?

But that didn’t explain Layla. And why were both girls angry with Daniela rather than Kumar?

Isabella reached the top of the stairs and stopped outside Daniela’s room.

The door was closed. She was about to knock when she heard something from inside.

Daniela was crying. Isabella stood still and listened.

Isabella reached for the door handle, then stopped. She wanted to go inside and comfort her. Daniela had been coming to this house since she was little, and Isabella loved her like another daughter. Hearing her cry like that hurt.

But she also wanted to know why.

Earlier that evening, everyone had been congratulating Daniela on finding a wonderful boyfriend. Now she was upstairs crying while Sofia and Layla refused to speak to her.

Isabella had seen enough. She turned around and went back downstairs.

The light was still on in Sofia’s room.

She knocked twice.

“Mamá?” Sofia called from inside.

Isabella opened the door. Sofia and Layla were sitting together on the bed in their nightclothes, wrapped in a blanket. Both looked as though they’d been crying.

They jumped when Isabella entered. “Mamá?” Sofia sat up quickly, wiping her cheeks. “Is something wrong?”

Isabella closed the door behind her. She looked at her daughter, then at Layla.

“Yes, mi amor. Something is very wrong.”

She pulled a chair closer to the bed and sat down. “Now, I want both of you to tell me what’s going on.”

Isabella sat in the chair beside Sofia’s bed, looking at the two girls. She hadn’t raised her voice, but Sofia knew that tone. Her mother wasn’t going to leave until she got an answer.
