The dining room was silent except for the steady scratch of pens on paper and the soft ticking of the kitchen timer placed dead center on the long mahogany table.
Sofia hunched over her worksheet, eyebrows furrowed in concentration, her usual bright smile long gone. Layla sat across from her, biting the end of her pen hard enough to leave teeth marks, one leg bouncing restlessly under the table. Even Daniela, who had only planned to “observe”, looked slightly shell-shocked.
None of them had expected this Kumar.
An hour earlier, the girls had bounced into the house giggling, still riding the high from being picked up at school. Sofia had immediately tried to drape herself against Kumar’s side. Layla had purred, “We missed you,” while pressing a lingering hug into his chest. They’d expected teasing, maybe some light reviewing mixed with flirting.
Instead, Kumar had calmly placed two thick packets in front of them. Math and English combined. Then he announced in a voice they had never heard before: “You have exactly two hours ladies. No calculators and no talking. I need to see exactly where you’re weak so I can build proper plans. Begin.”
He then moved to sit at the head of the table like a proctor, arms crossed, expression unreadable. The girls initially thought he was joking - but they were unable to move him. He just stared at them until they picked up the pens and started reading the questions set for them.
Now, forty-three minutes in, the flirtatious energy had completely evaporated.
Sofia risked a tiny glance up. Kumar was watching them with quiet, focused intensity. His jaw was set, shoulders straight, the easy-going man from the gym and the school pickup nowhere in sight. It was ... intimidating. Sofia immediately looked back down at her worksheet before he caught her staring.
Layla shifted in her seat, deliberately letting her already short uniform skirt ride higher up her toned thighs. She leaned forward just enough that the soft swell of her breasts pressed against the edge of the table.
“Professor Bombón,” she tried, voice low and sweet, “this integral is impossible. Maybe you could ... come help me personally?”
Kumar didn’t even look up from the notes he was making. “Focus on the page, Layla. Not on me.”
Most boys melted when she used that voice. Kumar didn’t even glance up. The calm refusal hit harder than any compliment. She shifted in her seat, thighs pressing together under the table. Fuck. Why did that make her wetter than if he’d played along?
Sofia let out a soft, nervous giggle. “Come on, Kumar. Just a tiny hint? We’ve been so good...”
“Ten minutes added if I hear another word that isn’t related to solving the problems,” he said calmly, still writing.
Both girls straightened instantly.
Daniela, who had been leaning against the doorway pretending to read a magazine, couldn’t resist. She sauntered in with a playful smile.
“Ay, you’re scaring them. This is supposed to be summer tutoring, not military boot camp...”
Kumar turned his head and fixed her with the same stern, unflinching gaze.
Daniela’s words died in her throat.
“If you’re going to distract them,” he said evenly, “you can sit down and do the full English comprehension section with them. Right now.”
Daniela blinked. For a second she looked genuinely flustered.
“I ... I was just...”
“Chair. Or silence. Your choice.”
She stared at him for two long seconds, then let out a breathless little laugh. “Okay. Okay, Professor. I’m going.”
Daniela escaped down the hallway toward the kitchen, heart beating faster than she cared to admit. In the kitchen, Latha was humming softly while slicing fresh mangoes and pineapples. The smell of lemonade and warm spices filled the air.
Daniela leaned against the counter, still slightly dazed. “Tía ... your son is terrifying.”
Latha glanced up, eyes twinkling with amusement. “Finally seeing the professor side of that boy, kanna?” She laughed warmly. “Rajesh used to say the same thing. Sweet as honey until you put him in front of a classroom or a problem set. Then he turns into a different person.”
Daniela moved beside her and automatically picked up a knife to help slice fruit. “I thought he was going to make me do extra problems. I’ve never seen him like that before.”
Latha’s smile softened with pride. “That’s because he cares. When Kumar decides something matters, whether it is studies, tennis or the people he’s responsible for, he doesn’t do half-measures.” She passed Daniela a bowl. “Here, help me arrange these snacks. The girls will need sugar after he’s done with them. The poor things. I hope he doesn’t wring them out.”
As they worked side by side, chopping, mixing fresh juices, arranging little plates of fruit, Daniela felt herself relaxing. There was something deeply comforting about Latha’s calm, motherly energy.
“You know,” Daniela said quietly, “I’ve only been here a couple of days, but ... I already love this house. The way you and Tío Rajesh are with everyone. With Sofia and Layla especially. It feels like a real family.”
Latha reached over and gently squeezed her arm. “This house has always had room for more children. And more daughters.” Her gaze was knowing but kind. “You seem very fond of my son already, Daniela.”
Daniela’s hands paused on the cutting board. A shy, genuine smile broke across her face. Latha had an amused smile as she saw Daniela blush.
“I am,” she admitted softly. “More than I expected. He just ... keeps surprising me. In the best ways.”
Latha wiped her hands on her apron, picked up a slice of juicy, sun-warmed mango from the cutting board, and gently fed it to Daniela.
“Good,” Latha said softly, using her thumb to brush a stray lock of hair behind Daniela’s ear before pulling her into a warm hug. “Just be patient with him, okay? He came here carrying heavy things from his breakup with Emily. She was a good girl, but it really broke him. But I see how he lights up around all of you now.”
Daniela hugged her back tightly, breathing in the comforting scent of cardamom, cinnamon, and fresh fruit, feeling a deep, quiet warmth settle in her chest.
Back in the dining room, the timer continued its merciless ticking.
And the girls were quickly discovering that their charming, easy-going bombón had a very strict, very dangerous side.
— The timer buzzed like a death knell.
Sofia slumped forward with a dramatic groan, forehead resting on her worksheet. Layla dropped her pen and rubbed her temples, muttering curses in Spanish under her breath.
“Take a break,” Kumar announced, voice still calm and authoritative. “I’ll correct these now.”
He didn’t need to say it twice.
Both girls bolted from the dining room straight into the kitchen like refugees seeking sanctuary. The moment they stepped through the doorway, the atmosphere shifted from tense silence to warm chaos.
“Tia! Save us!” Sofia cried, launching herself at Latha for a hug.
Layla went straight for the tray of snacks, stuffing half of one into her mouth. “Tía, your son is a monster. A terrifying monster.”
Daniela laughed brightly from where she was leaning against the counter, sipping lemonade. “Seriously. The professor avatar has no mercy!”
“Come kannas. Have some food. I’m sure you are hungry after all that work.”
The four women quickly filled the kitchen with noise and laughter. Sofia and Layla collapsed onto the stools at the island, dramatically recounting their suffering while devouring fruit and warm snacks expertly made by Latha.
“He didn’t even smile once,” Sofia complained, cheeks flushed. “Not even when I gave him my best pleading eyes. I thought he liked my eyes!”
Layla licked crumbs off her thumb. “He didn’t even acknowledge my lean. No one has been able to resist my lean in all these years. He just said ‘Focus on the page, Layla.’ Like ... excuse me? My lean is a weapon, and he ignored it!”
Daniela nearly choked on her drink. “He threatened to make me do the English section. Me! I escaped just in time.”
Latha shook her head, smiling fondly as she refilled their glasses. “You girls are spoiled. Kumar has always been like this with studies. When he was in high school, he once made Rajesh redo an entire presentation because the data wasn’t properly cited.”
The kitchen filled with easy, feminine energy as the girls teased each other and got pampered by Latha. Daniela braided Sofia’s hair while Layla demonstrated the exact “seductive lean” she had tried on Kumar, sending all of them into fits of laughter. Latha watched them with soft eyes, clearly delighted to have her kitchen full of noisy, beautiful girls. She missed having daughters of her own.
For twenty blissful minutes, they forgot about the worksheets waiting in the other room. Then Kumar loomed in the doorway.
His sleeves were rolled up, red pen still in hand, expression unchanged. “Break’s over. Sofia, Layla. Let’s go back to the table.”
The laughter thinned almost immediately.
Latha stepped forward, wiping her hands on a dish towel. “Kanna, they’ve been working hard. Let them rest a little longer. They’re exhausted.”
Kumar’s gaze softened slightly when he looked at his mother, but his voice stayed firm. “They need a lot of work, Ma. A lot. If I go easy on them now, they’ll never improve. Trust me on this.”
Latha opened her mouth to argue again, but Kumar gave her a gentle, respectful look. “Please. I know what I’m doing.”
Latha sighed, defeated. “Fine. But bring them back when you’re done. They need sugar after you torture them.”
Kumar nodded, then looked at the two girls. “Let’s go.”
Sofia and Layla dragged themselves back to the dining room like prisoners heading to execution. Sofia looked genuinely betrayed while Layla muttered threats in Spanish under her breath. Daniela gave them sympathetic thumbs-up as they left.
— Kumar had rearranged the table. Their original papers were now covered in red marks. Fresh blank sheets and a whiteboard on an easel stood ready.
“Sit.”
They sat.
For the next hour and a half, Kumar calmly, methodically, and ruthlessly dissected their work.
He started with Sofia.
“You’re not bad at pure calculation,” he said, voice steady and professional, “but your conceptual understanding is weak. Look at question seven.” He circled the problem. “You treated this as a simple equation instead of understanding the underlying relationship. That’s why you got the wrong answer even though your algebra looked clean.”
Sofia leaned forward despite her exhaustion, eyes wide as Kumar broke it down step by step on the whiteboard. His explanations were clear, patient, and surprisingly intuitive. He drew diagrams, used real-world examples, and connected ideas across topics.
Layla went next.
“Your algebra is fast but sloppy,” Kumar told her. “You lose points on careless mistakes. And your English essays...” He placed her paper down. “Strong voice, weak structure. You have good ideas but no clear thesis or logical flow.”
Layla crossed her arms at first, defensive. But as Kumar walked her through a complete rewrite of one paragraph, showing her how to build arguments properly, her posture slowly changed. She uncrossed her arms. She started taking notes.
As Kumar patiently explained concepts on the whiteboard, Layla found herself staring at him. The way his voice stayed steady and deep, the way his rolled-up sleeves showed his forearms, the quiet confidence he had while teaching ... it was doing things to her. She had never been this turned on by someone being strict before.
But then her mind drifted to Sofia’s confessions. Her eyes drifted to Sofia’s chest, then to the doorway where Daniela had been standing earlier. The comparison hit without warning. Sofia’s breasts didn’t even sag. Daniela was older, more experienced, more confident. Layla glanced down at herself under the table and felt the usual certainty slip for a second.
By the time he moved to individual plans, both girls were sitting up straight, exhausted but fully focused.
Kumar slid two neatly written sheets toward them.
Sofia’s Plan (6 weeks): Daily 30 minutes conceptual word problems Twice-weekly 45-minute sessions with him on applied math Reading comprehension drills tied to real-life statistics Weekly mock test Layla’s Plan: Daily 20 minutes precision algebra drills Structured essay templates and outlining practice Bi-weekly full English + Math combined tests Focus on speed vs accuracy balance “I’ll personally supervise the first two weeks,” Kumar said. “After that, we’ll assess and adjust. You’ll both be ready for your exam in 2 months if you actually follow this.”
Sofia stared at her plan, then at Kumar. Her eyes were glassy.
“I ... I didn’t realize how far behind I was,” she whispered. “We’ve been in school all year and I never understood half of this until today.”
Layla ran a hand through her hair, looking stunned. “One session with you taught me more than the last six months with my actual teachers. You’re brutal ... but you’re really good at this.”
Kumar’s expression finally softened, just a fraction. “You’re both smart. You just haven’t had someone push you properly. That changes now.”
He leaned back in his chair, looking at them with something close to pride.
“You worked hard today. I’m impressed you didn’t give up even when it got tough.” His voice dropped into something warmer. “This is just the beginning. If you trust the process, I’ll get you where you need to be.”
Sofia bit her lip, a small, tired smile breaking through. “Professor Bombón is scary ... but I think I like him.”
Layla met Kumar’s eyes directly, a spark of new respect in her gaze. “Don’t think this means I’m going easy on you outside this room, though. You still owe us for all that torture.”
Kumar allowed himself a small, genuine smile. “Deal.”
Kumar turned and noticed that Daniela was leaning against the doorway staring at him. He gave her a subtle wink and raised his eyebrows. She turned away blushing.
After the session, as the girls escaped to the kitchen, Layla lingered for a second, watching Kumar gather his notes. She wanted him. Badly. But the thought of sharing him - especially with Daniela, who seemed so much more experienced and intimidating - made her chest tighten with jealousy.
He’s hesitant too, she realized, remembering how he had pulled back from Daniela. What if he doesn’t want to share us? What if he only wants one of us?
She felt a fierce competitive streak rise inside her. Other boys worship the ground I walk on. But Kumar ... I’m going to have to fight for his attention.
— That evening, the house smelled of Isabella’s famous arroz con pollo and fried plantains. Layla had decided to spend the night, so the three girls were sprawled across the living room sofas in oversized t-shirts and tiny shorts, still buzzing from the day.
Isabella carried in a tray of fresh lemonade and raised an eyebrow at their dramatic sighs.
“Alright, spill. What did Professor Kumar do to you three?”
Sofia sat up excitedly. “Mami, he was terrifying! Two hours of complete silence. He didn’t smile once or even flirt back with us! It was just his stupid red pen and pure focus.”
Layla nodded vigorously. “I tried everything. I leaned forward, I called him Professor Bombón in my sexiest voice, I even dropped my pen and bent over slowly. Nothing worked. He just said, ‘Focus on the page, Layla.’”
“Ay, Dios mío ... you girls are terrible. But listen to me ... leave that poor boy alone so he can actually help you pass. If I hear you’re bothering him instead of studying, no farewell party for any of you.”
“No! You can’t do that to us!” Sofia gasped shocked.
“Just you watch, mi amor. The second I hear from Latha that you girls are making things difficult for Kumar you are grounded. And you too, Layla. I’ll tell Yasmine to ground you as well.”
Both girls looked at Isabella thunderstruck that she could even threaten them with something like that.
“And what about you, mija?” Isabella turned towards Daniela.
Daniela, lounging on the armchair, raised her hands in surrender. “He threatened to make me do the English section with them! I escaped to the kitchen like a coward.”
Isabella wiped tears of laughter from her eyes. “That boy ... I knew he was strict. Latha told me, but this? I’m impressed. And you girls actually learned something?”
“So much,” Sofia said delightedly, changing the topic from their farewell party. “I finally understood word problems that confused me for years. One session with him taught us more than a whole year at school.”
