The next morning was Thursday. I got up early and made me a breakfast of coffee, toast and eggs. After cleaning up the kitchen, I drove over to the farm where we were harvesting the beans. I found my crew getting everything ready to start and reviewed what they had left to do. The farmer there seemed pleased with our work, and it looked like, if there were no problems, we would be finished by early afternoon. I told Ronald (my foreman) that after they finished to get all the equipment back to the farm and take the rest of the day off. We will do all the cleaning tomorrow and Saturday. I had some things I needed to take care of, and I went back to the house.
First, I called my lawyer Lois Griffin. Lois is in her late 40’s. Her father had started the law firm soon after he got his law license. They had been my family’s lawyers since my family bought this farm. After talking to the receptionist Lois came on the line.
“Hey Jack! How are you doing?”
“I have a problem Lois, hope you can help”
“I’ll do my best. What is it?”
“Lois, I need a divorce”
“Tell me what is going on Jack”
“My wife ran off to the Bahamas with a guy named Jimbo Evans. She left me a letter explaining it. It says they will be there until spring and when they come home, she will start the divorce proceedings. I don’t want to wait that long. I want it taken care of as soon as possible.”
“Ok, can you stop by tomorrow?”
“Sure. Around 9am alright with you?”
“No problem. Be sure to bring the letter”
“One more thing. I am packing up all her stuff that she left here at the house. I plan on calling her parents and telling them to come and get it Sunday or it goes to the dump on Monday. Is that legal?”
“Sure. She left it in your house, if her parents don’t want it, toss it.”
“I think I will call Pat and ask him to be here when they get here so there will not be any problems. I don’t think they like me much.”
“That sounds like a good idea. I will see you tomorrow around 9am”
My next call was to Sues’ parents. I explained to her mother what had happened. She sounded happy her daughter had left me! She said that she did not know Jimbo, but he sounds nice. Yeah, just wait until she finds out he is black. She and her husband are both racist assholes. That was only one of the reasons I did not hang around them. She said they would be here Sunday to get my wife’s things. She did not want me to throw them away and she knew I would.
Next, I called Pat, the sheriff. Dad and he were friends all their lives. After telling him what was going on he said he would be sure to be at my house Sunday afternoon in full uniform and driving his patrol car just to make certain there would be no problems. Gotta love a little home cooking!!!
I was sure Lois would fill him in about everything said in our meeting tomorrow morning. How am I so sure? Pat’s wife died of cancer about 5 years ago. Lois’s husband died of a heart attack about a year before that happened. For the last 4 years their affair has been the worst kept secret in the county. Pat’s patrol car is often seen in front of Lois’s house at 5am. Everybody in town is happy for them. They deserve to be happy. Both are good people.
After hanging up with Pat I got busy packing up all of Sue’s things. I was not mean about it. I could have pissed in every sack, but I did not. We were just not meant to be together. If Jimbo had just got up, dressed and left, they would still be alive and at the ‘Villa’. Remember I asked him three times to leave and to be honest about it, I asked him real nice. He was the one who thought I was just going to stand there and let him run over me like he did when he played football.
About the time I finished packing her shit, I heard the guys come in with the equipment. I went down to make sure all had gone well and it had. I told them I would see them tomorrow afternoon and I went back up to the house. It was then that I remembered the rolls of money on the bed in the spare bedroom!
First, I counted the rolls. There were exactly one hundred of them. Each roll consisted of ten $100 bills. That’s $100,000! Where did Jimbo get all that cash and why was he taking it to the Bahamas? Those questions would be answered later.
Though I had over $5,000 in my bedside table and another $100,000 hidden in my closet, I thought I should keep my Friday routine the same. I get up early and drive into town, eat breakfast at Doris’ City Café, go to the bank and withdraw enough to make payroll, then on to the grocery store to buy what I need for the next week. I had been doing this for the past 5 months. The only thing I did differently was after the bank I went and talked to Lois. She read the letter, made a copy of it, then told me she did not handle divorces, but she had a friend who was a real ‘shark’ (her word for him). I told her to just get it done. I would even pay to get Sue served in the Bahamas. She was not sure that could be done but she would run it by her friend. I just mentioned that to show how bad I wanted out of the marriage.
After leaving the law offices, I stopped at the grocery store. I flirted with the little blond cashier for a minute, then went home to figure out the payroll. That takes all afternoon on Friday. Why? Well, remember I did graduate from college, but my major was in History with a minor in Geography. Not one course in business. I was thinking about teaching at the local high school, maybe coaching baseball but then I fell in love with the Marine Corps. Now 6 years later and with only one eye it is hard to play catch, no depth perception. I have no interest in teaching anymore. After I was finished with the payroll, I put a tv dinner in the oven, ate, and watched a little television. Then I went to bed.
