Larissa dropped Steph back at her car, and then went and found the filming, on the side of the road near the gas plant, and Asha went off to find Suzy; she’d be with Suzy the rest of the day gophering. Jaiden was at Xander’s factory, and then he’d be watching the filming for the afternoon. Larissa watched for an hour. Chez knew exactly what she wanted and sometimes it was easy and sometimes hard. There were plenty of people watching, back behind the line Suzy had drawn, as long as they were quiet, and they talked quietly. This was fascinating, and some of the audience were basically groupies.

A woman came to her and asked if she was Larissa? Yes, and it was B1 or B2’s mum. Was she OK with what her daughter was doing? The woman grinned, she certainly was: let them have some fun. She’d do the tall one over there next to the director if she had a chance. When Larissa said, “That’s my guy,” the woman shrugged and said, “OK, not him then.” Anyway, were the girls a problem for the team? Larissa said that Chez would kick them out if there was a problem, but otherwise she had said they were OK to hang around all week, as long as they went to school and so forth. Larissa got her number and sent it to Chez and asked if Chez wanted to talk to her. Chez turned around, found Larissa in the crowd, and gave her a thumbs up. “No, she doesn’t need to talk to you. She’ll call you if she wants. But tell the girls: if they cast their eyes at anyone else but the techie boys ... They’ll be out on their ear. Chez won’t tolerate anything like that.” The woman nodded – that made sense, and then she left.

She watched a bit more, and then it was time for lunch. She met Jane and her friends at a café in the downtown area. Jane had asked her for this, as a follow up to the blowjob thing. There were six friends with Jane, and they sat Larissa in the middle.

First, they wanted to talk about the catering; the six of them involved had made out like bandits the night before. There had ended up being nearly two hundred people, including children, and they’d ended up spending less than a thousand. That left them five hundred each for throwing a meal together that they pretty much would’ve done for free if Larissa had just asked nicely. And even better, they’d had lots of food left over, so they put out a note on social media and the council picked it up and spread it, and they gave the leftovers to anyone who needed the help.

Larissa smiled and said that she was super glad it worked for them. She knew that Chez thought that was cheap for the good will that got them, and that if they’d actually asked them to do it for nothing, they’d just have whined about the uncertainty. So Chez was totally pleased with the outcome – someone else worried about it instead of her.

Suddenly discussion turned to the blowjob thing. Had Larissa really suggested it, and had she really demonstrated for Jane? She grinned, and explained that it was real, but the guy had to want to do it; the blowjob thing was just to get his mates on board, to stop them being a problem. And also to make it right clear to the guy where his bread is buttered. And Larissa said that she thought the way Jane had done it, getting backup from her friends: a much better idea than she’d had herself – and these were the friends, right?

Well, they were indeed, and they were all very chuffed by the praise she gave them. Larissa smiled and said the most important thing she had after her man was her ring of girlfriends, and this group looked like a hell of a ring – had they good stories of how they’d backed each other up? Oh they sure did and that kept them going for a while.

Larissa smiled at them. “That’s all so wonderful. Jane told you I do corporate speaking for big wigs, right? Rich wanker banker types?” They all laughed, nodding. “I can tell you, all those people, guys or girls, terribly lonely. Where’s their ring of friends? All off fucking their neighbour’s wife or something. And city girls ... they have their mates that they go out dancing with, but it’s just not a stable group. So what you girls have out here – a lovely enduring friendship group: keep backing each other up. And get your guys under control. Don’t let them decide how much they’re drinking. Who’s wearing the panties here? You’ve got them by the balls, so you decide.” Yeah, they loved that. “So I’m really happy that Jane just did it. So you girls, follow her. Jane, you’ve had a bit of gossip, right?”

Jane nodded, resignedly. “But my mum told them to rack off, she was proud of me!”

Larissa grinned. “Totally, of course, because she should be. This whole good girls don’t thing is stupid. Everyone knows you’re all having sex, including your mums, right?” Yeah, they were all nodding. “So you do you. And pull your guys to heel, they’ll love it if you do it right.”

“I heard you let your guy tie you up?” one of them asked her.

“Yeah, you heard about that in the park last week?” Several of them were nodding. “I do. And when I’m tied up, I’m the centre of his universe, as I should be. He might tie me up, but believe me, it’s all about me!” They burst into laughter at that, so she found the photo of her and the dress Julian took the week before, and showed them quickly. “So yeah, I let him bang me like that. I love it, he loves it. He’ll do anything to keep getting that.” She got lovely smiles for that line. “But he’s also the centre of my universe. I’ll only ever do him, and he knows that in his bones.”

She sighed. “Unlike our two little groupies we picked up yesterday.” Yes, they were nodding. “So you know about that?”

“Yes, we saw them leaving with you.”

“Do you know them? Is there anything we should know other than that they’re sex mad groupies? Who still go to school? We did check their ages, that they were legal.”

They were laughing at that. She watched them looking at each other, but no one wanted to say anything. “So I met one of them’s mother. She was onboard with what they were doing and said she’d do my guy if she had a chance. So I assume, single mother, looked like she got pregnant at that age herself. That’s just how it is for those two girls?” Yeah, pretty much. “Well, I can tell you, they’re good at it, hot little sex kittens, but I hope that they get something more in their lives than that.”

The girls were shrugging. “Well,” one said, “my younger sister knows them. They’ll spread their legs for anyone. Most of the guys her age started with one of them.”

Larissa frowned. “Usually, that means that they’ve got abuse in their past. Does your sister know anything about that?”

“No. I asked her the same.”

“Well, it is how it is, I guess. I assume somebody will be mad with us that the boys picked those young girls up, but if it’s ever relevant ... at least mention that I don’t know how many single guys could resist those two, and our boys couldn’t. Chez will do her best to look after them. We did lay the law down to the boys about safe sex and so forth, and we said the girls have to go to school during the day.” She could see the girls nodding. “It’s basically ridiculous. Stop being a naked groupie to go to school.”

The girls were laughing hard at that one. “Naked?” One of them said.

“Oh, Chez said the boys had to get a good sleep. So they banged the boys senseless or something last night, and then left them to sleep in their own bed, and the two girls just slept on the lounge, arms around each other. I found them early this morning, their blanket was on the ground, so totally naked.” She shrugged. “I don’t know if anyone else saw them or if they’d even care.” She grinned and told them about the B1 / B2 thing, which they found just as hilarious. Then she told them about their hurried episode that morning and piling into the car with their underwear in their hands.

When they finished laughing, Larissa sighed. “Let Jane know if there’s anything else we need to know, and she’ll tell me, and I’ll pass it on to Chez. Thanks.”

Then the girls got talking about Layna, and how amazingly beautiful she was. Larissa nodded. They started speculating about how totally hot her guy would be. Eventually one of them thought to ask Larissa.

“You know, it’s interesting. Layna is the most beautiful person I’ve met by a country mile. You should see old guys around her, most of them can hardly think. But Layna’s a really nice person, passionate, considerate, caring. Of course, hardly anyone she meets is interested in that.” She could see them nodding. “Layna’s had serious trust issues getting a guy. My sister calls it the beauty trap. And Layna and I talked about it, and she told me she deliberately set out to find a different kind of guy. He’s not a good-looking guy at all, but why should she care about that? She knows what that’s worth. No, she searched for a guy who matched her heart, passionate, considerate, caring, and who made her comfortable. He’s a very nice guy, and I totally love him. It took quite a lot for him to believe she was serious about him. I see some of the hot guys posturing in front of her ... they couldn’t be more wrong about her.”

The girls were nodding seriously at that. “If you want to see him, he appears in just one of her videos, the one about whether she should do the big battery opening.” Well given what Larissa had said, they did want to see it, so she looked it up, and showed them that bit.

Irrepressibly, Jane said, “You know, we were right. He’s totally hot in a different way, and any of us would totally fall in love with him if we were looking for a guy. I’m really pleased for her.” Agreement all around the table for that.

It was time for lunch to end, and the girls all hugged her, and thanked her for meeting them. And they all promised to stay faithful friends to each other. And bring their guys to heel, they said, laughing.

After that, Jane and Larissa went off to the beach, so Jane could show her their private spot. It was back in the dunes, and Larissa stripped off, and Jane did too. They talked about Thomas – yeah, things were going great. And whether Jane was really OK about the gossip around what she’d done. OK, though worried something bad would come - but not much worried, and they planned some additional support mechanisms, people for Jane to depend on. But really, Larissa said, those friends from lunch ... gold, and Jane agreed. Then they talked about Larissa’s mum, and how Thomas had reacted when he told him she’d gone and met her. Better then she expected. And after the blowjob, and Jane’s stick it up them all attitude to that ... he was a little more understanding of his mum, and less concerned about people thinking bad about Jane because of his mum. Jane giggled, “Yeah, now they can just think of me badly outright, if they want to do that.” Then they talked about Jane’s mum – totally a great support for her. And Jane grinned and told her that she’d told her sister about the shower thing, and they’d decided to try it, and they’d both liked it. A lot. “She was a bit unsure. She’s done it with her husband, and thought it was all about sex, but then when we did it, she said that was heaps better, because we didn’t have to do all that gymnastics, we could just hug. Sweet. So we’re going to do it whenever we feel like it. And she totally backed me on the blowjob thing.”

It was getting time to leave, so Larissa dared Jane into skinny-dipping, and they did, quickly, though the ocean was cold and rough. Still fun, and Jane was laughing about it when they got back to their car. Jane headed off to find Thomas and Larissa went to find Julian. They had a break in filming, and Layna was resting, so Larissa told her what she’d found out about the two little groupies, and wondered if Layna might find time to chat with them about where they were going, and to be alert to past abuse. Layna thought about that and said she’d do that when the chance arose.

Then recording finished for the day. Within a couple of minutes, Julian and Larissa were on the road; time was tight. They met with Thomas and Jane on the highway, and Larissa switched to their car to talk to Thomas about what they were doing: they were having dinner with their mum and her lovers, which was nice ... maybe. At nine pm, Julian, Thomas and Jane would head back to Sale, for Julian’s evening meeting – Chez had put that back to ten pm so team members could enjoy their evening a little longer. Larissa was sleeping over at her mum’s place, and then getting up very early and heading back to work. Jaiden and Asha were sleeping at Steph’s apartment, and then Jaiden was heading home with Xander and Steph, and Asha was sleeping in with Julian the next night, and then they were all coming home on the Thursday evening.

Larissa was a little nervous about this dinner – it had been too easy; Bob and Mary had made the invite and been flexible, and when Larissa said she had to get back home to work the next day, they’d been helpful and invited her to stay over. Which was very practical – she was close enough to just go to work from here. But this was a totally different attitude from them than in the past, and she just had a feeling that there was a game going on somehow. And then there was Thomas, who still wasn’t sure how he felt; he’d only seen his mum once since she took up with her lovers, and while he now didn’t have a problem with what she was doing in his head, his heart wasn’t entirely on board. Larissa understood completely, so they agreed on some hand signals for him, to get one of the two girls to say they needed to loo, and ask him to show them where they were, if he needed a break, or to talk to them. Pretty transparent, but at least it would misdirect their mum as to what was going on.

They rolled up the driveway a little before 6:30, their nominated arrival time. Their mum and her lovers Bob and Mary were waiting for them at the foot of their stairs, all smiles. Larissa and Julian got warm hugs from them, and they were very polite and friendly with Thomas and Jane. And secretly, Larissa was amused at what her mum was wearing – pretty much that same jeans and halter top outfit that she’d bought for Amelia, and she did look good in it. Bob and Mary also looked good, but more dignified.

Her mum held Thomas tight and said that he looked great and she was so super happy to see him, and how happy she was that he’d come for dinner. And how much she loved Jane – what a great girl! Thomas said how was happy to see her again, and they sure agreed about Jane, so his mum gave Jane a big hug too.

Then they all went and sat around a table on their deck; it was a nice day and the view up and down the valley was amazing, though Larissa wasn’t so thrilled with seeing the smokestack from Yallourn Coal Power station over to the side of the valley. Well, the view, this was how the rich lived, and bits of it were good. But could they maintain good relationships? Larissa paid attention to the conversation around the table, as Bob and Mary quizzed Thomas and Jane about their lives, and to the by-play as well. For instance, her mum staring longingly at Thomas. She’d really missed him.

Given that they were down at Sale for Julian’s project, the whole subject of the environment and their project came up pretty quickly, and it was quickly apparent that Bob’s attitude had undergone a sea change, and he asked how he could support their project. Larissa grabbed that opportunity to move to the spare seat next to Bob, and as she did, she pulled her mum out of her seat, and pushed her down the other end of the table, and then said to Bob, “That’s a pretty big change of heart for you, and I’d love for you to explain how your thinking came to change.”

Well, Bob said, he’d thought a lot about what Julian said about income redistribution last time they talked – that a little of it was somehow implicitly necessary somehow, but also a huge problem, because if everyone’s natural resistance to it inevitably meant that we all fall off a cliff, it was an own goal. “And I hate own goals,” he said, fiercely. And he’d been doing his own research a little, on the raw data: it was scarier than he wanted it to be. Then he heard that Julian was down in the valley nosing around the gas plant through Larissa’s mum, and so he’d called the manager – that was after Julian had spoken to him in the pub that night. His surprising response indicating what Julian was planning led to Bob mentioning it in one of his management meetings, and his discovery that most of his management team were pretty concerned about two things: climate change, and also the way it had been politicised. So he’d asked the best analyst in his companies to spend a couple of weeks doing nothing but getting to the bottom of it – what was real? And forget the politics, and see through the lies, whatever they were. “And now she’s damn worried, so I am too, basically.”

Larissa smiled, and thanked him, and carefully asked Mary what her opinion was. “Oh, right. Well, we can’t take money off people, they need to make a living, but we sure as hell don’t want to run the world over a cliff on our grandkids.” Oh, were their kids having babies now? Not yet, but she could see it coming.

Larissa turned back to Bob, and said, “So, what do you think your company can do?” As he answered that, Larissa kept an eye on the other end of the table. Her mum now had her own conversation with Thomas and Jane, and it was going very well, judging by her mum’s body language, and their heads were getting closer together. Calling Mary into their conversation about the environment had been deliberate, because Mary been watching the other conversation closely – and jealously. Fear of missing out, Larissa judged, but she was going to miss out, because if she tried to get in on that conversation, Larissa was going to intervene. Fortunately, she was also invested enough in this money conversation that she didn’t do that. And also, surely she’d figured out what Larissa was up to, and maybe she’d chosen not to turn it into an obvious contest.

Bob was reeling off a list of things they’d agreed to work on. Intelligent things, Julian seemed to endorse them anyway; Larissa was content to leave that to Julian. They were mostly supply chain initiatives, the kind of thing a true believer would do, not just marketing based endorsement, though there was naturally some of that.

Once he’d laid down his chops, Julian asked him what he had in mind in term of supporting the project? Well, he’d have loved to sponsor and organise the dinner in the park they had yesterday, but maybe next time? And of course he knew about that, where did they think all the food come from? His retail outlets, of course. And he’d asked his people to keep him informed.

Anyway, sure, he knew that they weren’t going to be doing much in the valley, which was his domain. Unless they wanted to do something about using supply chains to influence outcomes, and work with his company around that? Hard to make good Youtube content, sure, but his whole company would bend over backwards to get Layna whatever she wanted for visuals if that was a go – just as long as they got their name on it. Because now Layna had that VC guy behind her, and had carried content from the minister, Layna was starting to really matter.

“Interesting,” Julian said. “I’d love to work with your team to figure out the fundamentals, and what it would look like, and if there’s something there, Layna and Chez would certainly like to do that – it fits well into our overall plans.”

At that point, their cook called out that dinner was ready. Mary was giving Larissa an intense look, so Larissa waited with her until the others left. As she thought, Mary had something to say. “What’s your game?”

Larissa pursed her lips and said, “You know, I’m happy for you to own mum totally, as long as she’s happy with that. And she is, so I’ve supported you in that. But you’ll own her much more completely if you support her to have a good relationship with the four of us.”

“That’s only possible if the other three are on board with that.”

“Julian and Jane are. Thomas, his head is, but his heart hasn’t fully caught up yet. That’s a work in progress, and we’ve talked about it, and he’ll get there.”

Mary nodded and smiled at her. “Thank you.”

Larissa grinned. “If you want to have some fun over dinner, ask Thomas about ‘The Blowjob’.”

“Oh, I was going to!”

After that discussion, dinner was much easier. Mary was much more chill about watching over her mum’s interactions, and everything was easier. Interesting, Larissa thought, she’s as afraid as anyone else, in spite of her money, status and beauty. Well that’s pretty much what she’d said to the girls at lunch time about money, so she set about seeing how well she could get to know Mary. She was a valley girl, she told Larissa with a grin, knowing it meant something different to ‘valley girl’, and she lucked out and bagged herself the right guy – he had money behind him, and he made more and more every year. Between them, they had friends and family all over the area. Oh, said Larissa, that’s interesting. How have your family and friends responded to your relationship with my mum? There’d been other conversations going on, but everyone stopped to listen this.

“Mixed, really. A few think it’s a mid-life crisis, and we’ll get over it soon. Well, they’re wrong!” and she gave a surprisingly loving look at her mum. “A few would like to cut us off, but we have too much money for that.” This time, a very predatorial grin. “And our really close friends? They really love your mum, and think that what we’ve got here is great. But we don’t care what other people think. All that matters is the three of us. And Bob and I are very happy. Raychelle, what about you?”

Her mum smiled and said, “I’m the happiest I can remember. I mean, holding you two as babies – that was an incredible experience, but I still had to deal with your father. Tonight, dinner with you four and Bob and Mary, this is the best it’s ever been!” Larissa could see tears in her eyes. Interesting, that language was stronger than she expected – it would certainly reassure Thomas.

Mary nodded. “Your mother was a wonderful happy girl when we started high school, best of friends. But then it changed suddenly, and I was too inexperienced to understand and too immature to care. Later, when I understood, my heart ached, but by then it was too late ... until this year.”

Wow, that was a really interesting piece of history. A number of things fell into place for Larissa. “I didn’t know you went to school together, and were best friends. How solid!” Quickly she thought – she wanted good stories ... well, she should just ask. “Tell us some good stories from being in high school together.”

Both of them told some stories, giggling together about some of the things that happened. But Larissa could tell: they weren’t really besties, just friends. Still, obviously they had been in the same group, and they’d done at least a couple of sleep overs together, just the two of them. So, friends. But then she realised, they were much more, would’ve been much more than friends ... if they’d let themselves, but it was just impossible. Wow.

Somehow, this exchange had made a difference to Thomas’ body language. And so when Mary said, “Well, enough stories about the old days, let’s talk about now. Any good stories?” She hadn’t even got around to looking at Thomas when he grinned, and said, “After last week, I’ve got a great one!”

Larissa smiled, pleased that he brought it up, and also pleased that Jane was grinning. Thomas’s story led to Jane telling them about Larissa demonstrating it with Julian, which led to Julian telling them about them doing it for each other at the wild party with the hand-fasting chicks. Larissa made sure all through that there was lots of laughter, and made it clear how much she respected Jane’s guts for going through with it, and how clever she was to get her girlfriends to back her up.

But, Bob wanted to know, why was this even necessary? Well, Larissa handled that one, and talked about growing up in an abusive home, where alcohol was a key problem, and that she knew she couldn’t manage her drinking, after some pretty painful experiences – she told them what happened after her mum ran out of that pub, as an example. And she said Jane had said it was a problem for Thomas, and Jane told them a story ... yes, it was damn well a problem for Thomas. And that a key problem for them all was friends getting them to drink. She told them about Julian’s ever so slight lapse with her friend, and how he was determined not to let that happen again. What she’d found was a circuit breaker: Julian’s friends understood completely why he wasn’t drinking with his best mates. And now they were cutting it back, embarrassed by their own excess. Jane agreed – Thomas’s mates had come to her privately and promised not to get him to drink. “Worried about their own blowjobs!” she laughed.

“Thanks for explaining all that,” Mary said, “it certainly helps us understand why you won’t drink when you come here. I thought that was just when you were here. Jane, what you did was really gutsy. I hope you don’t get much blowback.”

Jane shrugged and said that there’d been some, but she told them what her mum had said. “Anyway, I have Thomas, and Larissa and my sisters, and my friends. They all totally have my back. And Larissa’s sisters too. I’ve met them and they’re awesome!”

Larissa’s sisters? Larissa delicately explained that she got on so well with the two of them that they’d collectively decided that they were full sisters, and that was that, though she did her best not to let her mum know just how tight she was with the family. Thomas smiled and added that Jane’s brother and brother-in-law were great too, and they might as well be brothers. “And even better, Jane’s brother-in-law works for Larissa’s sister’s husband.” Oh wow, that was a connection Larissa hadn’t known about.

That led to discussion about the economy and working conditions around Sale. Julian had some views of his own having talked to a lot of people about that. Thomas was thinking about quitting at the gas plant, where he did electrical work, and going contracting, and putting in a solar, wind and battery farm of his own with his own tricks, and gradually growing it, so he was very interested in Julian’s views on the local economy. Julian, Bob and Thomas got right into the nuts and bolts and dollars of that idea, and Larissa relaxed and smiled at Jane. Yeah, she was very happy.

The food was done with by this time, so Mary said, “Why don’t we leave the boys to their discussion, and us girls go and chat on the deck and look at the lights?” Larissa had thought that ‘the lights’ was a reference to the city lights, and yes, they were visible, but Bob and Mary had installed lights on the trees scattered across their fields, and the overall effect was ethereal and haunting – a genuinely astonishing piece of artwork. The conversation sort of followed the mood, as Mary got the four of them to sit very closely together because it had got chilly, and encouraged her mum to be close to Larissa and Jane. “We need our own emotional investment,” she told them, “because Bob is sure as hell going to invest in Thomas’s solar farm. Don’t tell Thomas, right, but I’ve seen this before. So we need to be good friends, and I can see that I have nothing to fear from you two wonderful women.”

That was really doing it for Jane. And her mum too. Larissa ... she still wasn’t sure. She’d seen a snow job before, but she couldn’t be sure right now. She went with it anyway, and they had a great conversation. Jane’s parents were going to come visit for dinner, with Thomas and Jane. Bob, Mary and her mum were going to come and visit Thomas and Jane and look around Sale – it been too long. And her Mum was going to come up – tomorrow! – and spend the day with Larissa in her van and watch her do her corporate speaking at lunch time, and then they were going to the stripper shop to buy something to surprise Mary with. Mary just laughed when that came up. At the end of the day, Bob and Mary were going to meet them for dinner and take her mum home.

If all this was genuine ... it was awesome. But surely there was a game here somewhere? Well, she was about to find out, because the guys came out, laughing, and Julian said this was way more fun than he could have dreamed about but Chez would cut his balls off if they weren’t gone in five minutes, and he didn’t intend to let her do that to Larissa.

A round of happy goodbyes, and a deep kiss for Larissa from Julian that caused some comment, and then they were gone in Thomas’s car. Bob and Mary led Larissa and her mum back to their living room. “What a wonderful couple. I’m sorry we took so long to do this,” Mary said, with her arm around her mum.

What followed was a repeat of the other time – an apparently polite conversation about Julian, Thomas and Jane, while they played with her mum. Well, at least she knew there was a game, though still not how far they would take it. And at least her mum didn’t seem so embarrassed this time. But when Mary put her hand inside her mum’s halter top, Larissa decided it was time.

“You know, I think you should ask. It’s about respect. If you want to have some fun with mum while I’m watching, you should ask me first.”
