A wedding

Joe and Layna are getting married Saturday 17 December 2022

The Wright family home, Mornington Peninsula

Address on the slip inside this envelope. Please don’t share it.

We would love you to come.

This is a slightly unusual wedding, so a few things to know.

The day

The livestream begins at midday. You are welcome any time from then. The ceremony, where we sign the paperwork and make our promises, will be at around 2:30pm. Dancing starts at 5pm. The livestream will end at 6pm, which is when the wedding officially ends, but there will be a bonfire around the back of the house from then until 8:45pm. Security needs to close up at 9pm. We hope you stay for all of it. We are not in a hurry to leave.

The livestream

The wedding will be livestreamed to YouTube. Audio may be streamed from anywhere on the open lawn, but cameras and microphones will not enter the marquee. If you need a private conversation, please have it in there. Anywhere else, please assume a camera. The livestream comes down off the internet at 6pm. After that, the rest of the night is just for us.

What to wear

Dress up however you like, except: please wear a colour that means something to you. When you arrive, you will be asked what it means, in a sentence or two. The question is honest — your school colour, your favourite shirt at fourteen, the colour of someone you love, the colour of a place. Anything. We are going to read all of them later, and your reason may make it into the livestream.

Gifts

Please, no gifts in the usual sense. This is a Wright family tradition. If you want to make a gift to help us remember you by, there will be a board by the front door. Whatever you would like to give us must fit on that board, in three centimetres by three centimetres or less. The board will go on a wall in our home and we will see it every day for the rest of our lives. There will be pins, glue dots, and a small table next to the board. Mount your gift yourself, anywhere on the board. There is no plan to the layout. Whoever pins next pins wherever they like.

A few other things

No alcohol at this wedding. You probably already knew

No additional guests, please

Security will be significant. You will be checked at the outer road. Please bring photo ID, and allow half an hour for screening

Pets: Please no.

If you have any questions before the day, please ring or write Suzy at the number on the slip. Suzy runs the whole thing, and she will get back to you.

We love you. We would not be doing this without you.

Joe & Layna

They met at the airport not long after dawn. Julian, Larissa, Layna, Joe, Suzy, Kayla, Ebony, Louise and Eleni, along with security. Louise and Eleni were last, since they had the furthest to come. Once they were all there, the pilot came off the plane to find them with his assistant: Eloise and her pilot boyfriend. Larissa looked at them, her mouth open. “Eloise! What the hell?”

Eloise grinned. “Hi Larissa. Cairns is too hot and steamy this time of year, so we decided to come contracting south. And when I saw this job on the board, I made sure we got it. I’m busy, so I’ll come talk once we’re in the air.”

While they were getting set, Larissa said to Eleni, “So how are you feeling?”

“Nervous. Excited. But still very sure. I want to do this.”

“Great. Kayla, today’s a very big day for Eleni. She’s going back to Sydney for the first time after leaving in difficult circumstances. She’s been living in Traralgon under different name for a few months, healing, and today she’s going back to see the people she used to work with. I think it’s a great indication that she’s healing well.”

“Larissa, your plan worked very well. I had no chance to look back as soon as I got involved with your big party redux. By the time I had a chance to look around, I had all these wonderful friends all around me. And Terry and Louise ... awesome. And then the party, of course, what a high!”

“The party?” Kayla asked. “And can I ask about the difficult circumstances?”

“Sure.” Eleni explained about what happened to her, and how Larissa rescued her. Larissa listened carefully, and liked the amount of emotion she had - not too much or too little. Eleni appeared to have achieved balance. “Then, of course, I organised the second version of Larissa’s big party for the Gippsland students. It was quite a bit of work.” She got some laughter for that.

She had to stop at this point for them to board the plane. While they were doing that, Larissa thought about the second party. The first party had been thrown together in a hurry, while the second party had more time, previous experience, a full time event manager, and the catering infrastructure was fully in place this time. And Eleni had gathered plenty of sponsorship, very generous sponsorship too, including from Kayla - Kayla just hadn’t made the connection. All that meant much more infrastructure, much more fun for the kids, and much more supervision. There’d been two massive marquees for gaming and one massive one for an exhibition of arts, crafts and hobbies by the kids, food and party drink trailers everywhere - all of Bob’s crews had been there, and that was something that Bob was starting to scale up nationally. There’d been plenty of supervision, including enough police, and Lisa, the police minister, had come to the party and the cops were predominately younger ones that cycled between duty and dancing and gaming with the kids.

But most kids had been dancing, and they’d had plenty of entertainment to enjoy. Isla had sung, including her song with Layna, and some other songs on the piano. Mason had come with his band that included footy players. There’d been other local bands, DJs and a couple of nationally known ones. They’d done a special sequence that was going in Isla and Mason’s song for Larissa. Tamara had run the whole show, up on the stage with Tony having lots of fun. Larissa had been down in the crowd with Julian dancing with the kids, having a wonderful time, but a few times she’d had to go up on the stage to talk to them, including doing acknowledgements and telling the kids the current stats on the outcomes from the campaign.

The really controversial bit had been the tent city. From the beginning, it had been near the top of the kid’s wish list. And it had been at the top of the teacher’s list of things that weren’t allowed. Not Louise’s list, but no one was asking her, the only thing she wasn’t getting an opinion on. Except in the end they had to listen to her: the teachers could say what they liked, but the tent city was going to happen; the only choice the teachers had was whether it had a measure of organisation or not. So a massive tent city happened at a park over the road: campfires, dancing, and sleeping in the tents. A little sleeping, anyway. There were plenty of teachers and police ensuring that if actual sex happened, it was in the tents. Sex on the dance floor was fine as long it was by the campaign rules. Mainly they were ensuring: safe fires, no drugs or alcohol - because there were always a few stupid kids who thought they were clever, lots of water and condoms available, and plenty of respect happening.

And the reason that Louise knew the tent city would happen is because the day the party was announced, Charlotte had informed Louise that she was giving her v-card to her fine young man in a tent after the party, provided that Terry, Louise, Julian and Larissa approved of him. Also, most of her friends had the same plan, even if they’d given up their v-card, they were still going to be doing the tent city. Or at least, getting done in the tent city. Julian and Larissa had danced by a fire with Charlotte and her boy right at the end of the evening, and hugged them both and sent them off to have a good time, and since both of them were also supervising the tent city with the cops and police, they’d run into Charlotte and her boy mid-way through the night that followed, all smiles, very happy with each other. Sweet.

The final part of the event was dinner the next night for all the teachers, sponsors and others involved in the event. Eleni had come out of the shadows for that, and Larissa had given her formal thanks for the organising the event, and as part of her thank you gift, given her the book of love from her old workmates. At the end of the night, she’d said to Larissa that she was ready to reconnect with her old workmates, but only if Larissa and Louise were there to hold her hand.

Which was partly the reason for today’s trip. And why in a private jet? By the time they added up everyone who was coming, it was nearly cheaper, and it was way more convenient and easy for security purposes. Not as good for the environment, and Larissa was still trying to figure out what she thought about that.

Once they were in the air, Eloise threaded her way along the narrow aisle, and sat on Larissa’s lap and hugged her tight. “It’s really great to see you again,” she said. “I’ve been wondering when I should contact you again, and then I saw this flight.” She looked around at the others and said, “Larissa saved me. Did she save any of you?”

That got a round of appreciative laughter, and Layna said, “All of us, Eloise. But tell us, how are things going since I last saw you? You look really good, healthy and happy.”

“Oh, I am, thanks, Layna. At Larissa’s prompting, I gave my family the flick, and moved to Cairns, and I got a job, and started dating the pilot up the front, and Larissa paid for me to get a life coach, who’s just an awesome woman. So I’ve stopped drinking, I’ve got lots of good friends, and I’m living with him now, and very happy. Larissa, thank you so much.”

“I’m happy I helped you, you’ve made it worth it. And I did hear things were going well from Katy, but I’m glad to see you. And you do look good. You’ve gained weight, and your skin looks a lot better. You’re obviously looking after yourself well.”

“I am, Larissa, and it’s time for me to pay up now. I’m a little nervous, I admit, but I’ve learnt from Katy, and you: I keep my word. Speaking of which...”

She moved over to Julian, and said, “Larissa is wonderful but you’re the one who pulled me back. What an awesome man you are. Thank you.” Then she kissed him passionately.

When she stopped, Julian said, “It was my pleasure. I’m glad your life is in a better place, but was that what you were nervous about? Sure didn’t feel like it.”

When they stopped laughing, Eloise said, “Oh no. I was not nervous about that. My man even knew I was going to do that, the only man I’ll ever do that for other than him. But how are you? You fully recovered?”

“Sure,” Julian said. “It was pretty dramatic, but I was lucky, and I’ve recovered fine, back to full exercise for a few weeks now.”

“It was dramatic,” Eloise assured him. “I mean, you all know, but it was big news indeed, so I’m glad you’re better. Anyway, no, I’m nervous about what Larissa said I was going to do for her now.”

“Oh, what did she ask you to do?” Louise asked.

“She said she wanted me to give talks in schools about why to stop drinking, and in support of the campaign.”

“Oh, great!” Louise said, “That’d be awesome. You don’t want to do that?”

“Well,” Larissa said, “if you don’t want to, you don’t have to. I’d like you to, but I’m not going to force you.”

“Oh, no, I do want to, I owe you. But I don’t know how to stand up in front of lots of kids like that.”

“Oh, yes!” Louise said. “Of course! I know all about that. Would you let me help you with that?”

“Umm?”

“You should,” Ebony said. “Louise is the most awesomest person ever, other than Larissa, and she’s been doing exactly that for us.”

Larissa laughed at the expression on Eloise’s face. “Louise and Ebony, you should really explain to Eloise who you are.”

They were still talking about that when they landed in Sydney, and Louise invited Eloise to tag along with her all day. Eloise said she could, so she kissed her pilot and tagged along in the convey.

“I do not understand how you live with all this security,” she said, looking at the convey lining up - two limos with a lead and a chase car. They ignored the small limo for now, and squeezed into the big one together.

“Tell me about it,” Larissa said, “I hate it. Mostly. But Layna and I have learnt to live with it, and Kayla always has.”

“But why?” Eloise asked.

“Mainly, they worry about kidnapping for Kayla and I, now that everyone knows I’m the heir. Even if it’s only temporary.”

She’d been outed as Bob’s nominated heir by none other than the prime minister himself, as an offhand comment while answering a question about the fallout from the murder of David Jones’ co-conspirator.

After that had happened, Bob could finally start cleaning up his companies, and he’d starting doing so immediately. But some alert journalist had strung together the right clues, and asked the right questions, and busted the whole thing open a couple of weeks later. So much for protecting the co-conspirator’s family, which they’d promised him; someone had leaked, but it didn’t appear that they’d ever figure out who. And it was fall out from subsequent investigations that led to the Prime Minister being asked about the case, and his casual mention that Larissa was Bob’s heir as he was thanking Bob for assisting them. Larissa had been working at the time and totally blind-sided by the fallout for that, which included a whole heap of journalists waiting for her at the headquarters at the end of the day. It’d been a total surprise to everyone else, since as far as they knew, Matt was the one. Larissa had bent over backwards to talk Matt up, and Isabella, and even Thomas.

Since then everyone who asked her got the same response: “Yeah, well, I might be heir on some piece of paper somewhere, but Bob’s planning to fix his will up, and for now, I’ve got a job to do, and people need me to do it well.”

“And also, Layna’s getting to be pretty important these days, and she’s still making controversial videos. Like this weeks one, going after a big mining company for trashing indigenous land rights and the environment while they’re at it. So we’re just being careful, and she’s piggy-backing on my security.”

“None of us like it, Eloise, but it’s too late to choose anything different,” Layna said. “We just have to make the best of our lives, hey?”

Eloise nodded. She knew about that.

Eleni sat between Larissa and Louise, and they both held her tight. “I didn’t get to ask you before. Eleni, or Voula?”

“Eleni. They’ll call me Voula, but this is me now. I’m different. I’m never going back to what I was doing, and will never go back to my family either. And I loved working for you, and I want to keep doing it. To the point that I dated a man which was very healing, but didn’t let it progress because I know I’ll have to travel all the time to do what I want to do for you.”

“Umm, what about your heart’s goal?” Larissa asked her.

“That can wait a year or two, Larissa, though we need to talk about it later. But no, running your party ... that was big in my heart like nothing else in my life. You knew, of course.”

“Well, I did. But I worry that there won’t be any more.”

“Oh, there’ll be more,” Louise said, chuckling. “Lots more. We’re already working them up. Kayla will sponsor them, and they’ll be huge.”

“Sure will,” Kayla said. “Larissa, our budget for doing stuff with you is wide open. Anything at all you want, after the grand final.”

“Well, OK.” It was impossible to argue with that, after the grand final. “So you should, after Layna made me sing in public for you.” They all burst into laughter for that. “Anyway, you’re going to be right?”

“Yes, I think so, but keep an eye on me, thanks.”

Their first destination was a halfway house next to a park in Redfern, the charity that Eleni had been working with before. Officially, Larissa was visiting as the donor, to see what progress they’d made with her large contribution. Large for them, anyway. Larissa had told them in advance that she was bringing Layna and their guys, but the others were a surprise. In the case of Eleni, a very big surprise indeed.

Once they arrived, Larissa got out of the limousine first, and then waited for everyone else to get out before she turned to the welcoming party. She was just turning to say hello to the director, who was waiting for her, when Eleni got out of the limousine, last.

The director gasped in surprise. “Voula?!” Eleni smiled at the director, who just went straight to her and hugged her tight. And people were converging on them from left right and centre, laughing and smiling. It was a good thing she’d warned the security team, and the rest of them stood back.

“I expected this,” Louise said in Larissa’s ear.

Larissa turned and smiled at Louise, what a lovely outpouring of love and excitement this was. There was something about Eleni - she was a very good looking woman but that wasn’t it; she was just lovely and friendly to everyone, and people just naturally loved her.

Eventually, Eleni had hugged everyone, and she was left hugging one of the charity workers tightly - the woman who’d done the book for her at her old work. The director came back to Larissa and said, sheepishly, “Hi, I’m Marge, the director here, and welcome to our centre. I’m sorry our welcome was such a mess.”

“Hi Marge, I’m Larissa, and your welcome was just I wanted. I’ve brought Eleni back to you, she’s your real visitor today.”

“Eleni? But oh, thank you so much. You don’t know how much this means to us!”

“I think I have an idea, but where can Eleni and I stand to talk to everyone?”

The director lead her over to a spot in the middle of the park. “Hello everyone,” Larissa called out. “Look who I brought back to you!” That got lots of cheers. “I know you’ll have lots of questions, that’s surely expected. Voula is known as Eleni now, and she’s going to tell you what happened, but please, no questions about that after she tells you, though you can certainly ask her about what she’s doing now. But before that, I just want to introduce all my friends who’ve come along today.” Once she’d introduced them all, she turned to Eleni. “OK!”

Eleni turned and whispered to her work friend, and then said aloud, “Well, Hazel says that she told you what happened, why I disappeared. I wasn’t in a very good frame of mind, but for some reason I answered the phone when Larissa called me, and she pulled me back from the brink, and saved me, and I decided to go and start my life over. And what Larissa asked me to do was organise the second Big Larissa Party. How many of you have heard of that?” Most of them. “Well, I ran the event. And it was a wonderful experience, and I realised after that, I’m feeling strong again, and I want to come back and see how you’re all doing, and so here I am. Can you all show me what’s changed around here?”

She had plenty of excitement for that, and she was led off in a hurry by some of the charity workers. The director said, “Umm, I had all this whole tour organised for you, and...”

“Hey, don’t worry about that,” Larissa said. “I don’t need to see anything, and if you need any help or whatever, Eleni will see it and let me know. I’m happy to follow around and enjoy the excitement with my friends. Though if you any semblance of a tour left that you can run, it’d really be good for me if you could give it to my friends Kayla, Louise, Ebony and Eloise here. The rest of us are happy to follow along. Honestly! It’s not that I think you’re not important, it’s because I think you’re so important I’m not wasting your time. Show them around! Do you recognise Louise?” Bingo, once asked that question, she did, and her jaw dropped. “See, go show the real famous person around.”

Then it was just the four of them in the park. “That was truly lovely,” Joe said. “I’m so happy I saw that.”

“It certainly was,” Layna said. “I feel really good now. You knew, didn’t you, Larissa?”

“I guessed. I knew what her work thought about her. You’ll see when we go to the office party later. Everyone just loves her. Her work, the party, and so why not here, where her heart really was?

“So we shouldn’t look around?”

“Oh, we will. Eleni will be out shortly to do it. I just didn’t want to let the director take that pleasure from Eleni. Also, I want a real look around.”

Layna laughed. “Of course.” But then someone approached Layna to sign something, and she smiled and started signing, knowing she’d have a sore hand before she was able to finish.

Ten minutes later Eleni re-emerged to offer Larissa a tour. She dragged Julian, Joe, and Layna along with her, and got the real tour. They were certainly making a difference to some genuinely disaffected youth here, she could see that, including plenty of indigenous Australians. Sweet. And she could see Ebony had been by in front her - her mission was to hand out ribbons and evangelise the pledge, and many of the kids she ran into were wearing ribbons. Very sweet. And she could also see that Eleni’s arrival had completely ruined the carefully organised tour she was supposed to see, a carefully chosen mix of disaster and success that was supposed to increase the likelihood she’d hand some more money out to them. None of that made any difference, Bob had already decided with her what they were doing if Eleni was happy.

She did find a very fancy morning tea that was ready for them, but the kids had plundered a bit of it, which made her laugh. She called the nearest kid over that she could see, and told him quietly that she’d be super disappointed if he and his mates didn’t figure out a way to spread the entire morning tea around all the kids while the staff weren’t looking. He gave her a wickedly amused look and disappeared.

The tour was supposed to end up around that morning tea, and Marge was quite upset to find it was all gone. “Damned fucking kids!” she swore quietly under her breath, but then she picked herself up, and said that they maybe they should take over the staff room instead. They crammed in there - some of the kids, some of the volunteers, the director, Eleni’s friend, and all of them.

Layna grinned at Marge, whose discomfort was evident. “The rule for dealing for dealing with Larissa is to expect the unexpected. But can we do anything to make you more comfortable?”

“Oh, you brought Voula back to meet us. I’m totally on board with that. We’ve missed you so much, though of course, we’ve been wonderfully blessed by you in your absence. You’re not coming back to stay, are you?” When Eleni shook her head, she said, “Oh no, I understand. But Larissa, I was kind of hoping you might consider helping us out a bit more? What you already gave us was a wonderful gift for the kids, but I understand it might have been a once off. We’re incredibly grateful though.”

“Well, I’ve certainly been impressed by the work you’re doing, and what I saw is that your staff and volunteers really believe in what you’re doing, and that counts a lot for me. But what do you see, Eleni? If you were back here, would you be happy with you saw?”

Eleni looked at her in surprise. “Oh, I was so worried when I left, because I didn’t know how it would go. And what I saw? Well, you’ve certainly used the money well, the infrastructure is much better than it was. But...” She shot Larissa a worried look, but Larissa already knew. “Umm, this staff room seems to have gotten a really nice upgrade, and the kids dining hall might have missed out a bit, for instance. And Larissa, did you see the food stores? No, Larissa had missed that bit. “I saw that we had quite a yummy morning tea, but I think that maybe the kid’s breakfast wasn’t quite so nice.”

“Well, we did have quite a nice morning tea lined up our guests,” the director said, and she looked pretty worried. “But it disappeared. I’m pretty disappointed about that.”

“Well,” Larissa said, “it might have been because I challenged them to pull that off while we distracted all your staff. You kids were pretty thorough too, congratulations!” The kids that were present laughed a lot for that one. Even some of the volunteers and staff did. The director, not so much. “All right. I came here knowing that you’d want to carefully present yourself to me. But really, I wanted to bring you Eleni, and I know that made you happy. And then I had my own look around, and I saw what Eleni saw too. Because my family has been involved in enough charities to know what the challenges are.”

The poor director, she was looking pretty unhappy now.

“So what I want to know is, if we continue to support you, can you address those issues? I want you to actually look after the kids, not just look like you want to. Of course you need to look after your staff and volunteers, we understand, but can you assure me that any more money will go where it should with the right balance?”

“Oh, Larissa, I completely understand. I promise that we’ll get right on top of that, and if you give us anything more, we’ll provide you with a full accounting of how we prioritise our use of the money.”

“Great. There’ll be a written contract, but I’m going to assume that we can sort that out, so here.” She pulled the blank cheque she had out of her bag with Bob’s signature on it, wrote the number they’d agreed on it, and handed it to the director. “Our plan is to support you to this amount on an annual basis, but you’re welcome to talk to us if unexpected challenges arise.”

“Wow,” the director said, looking at in awe. “Half a million! Larissa, that’s amazing.”

“You deserve it. You’re doing good work, keep it up, and when we talked about what you’re doing, Bob said he thinks you’re saints, and it’s our pleasure to support you. And our support for Hazel will continue too.”

“We really appreciate it, Larissa. Just so much! How can we show you our appreciation?”

“Well, the most important thing you can do is keep doing all the good work. But we think it would be pretty appropriate to acknowledge Bob’s support on your website, and I definitely want to tweet a photo of you and Eleni holding that cheque. Eleni, if you’re happy, you’re giving this to them on behalf of Bob. Other than that ... would you like some media attention?”

Marge got a look of awe on her face. “I think we’d like that very much!”

“Well, I’ll think about that. Would you want to shoot here, Layna?”

“Yep. Thanks for asking. Would you kids want to be on my show? Some music and dancing as part of it?”

Did they want to be on her show? After last week? Since coming back from Europe, Layna had done several shows around Indigenous politics, culture, and biodiversity, and this week she’d done that show about a mining company that’d double-crossed the local indigenous people. That had led to questions in parliament and the expectation was that the company was going to have its license suspended, which would cost them a seriously large amount of money. The kids could hardly contain themselves with excitement.

“Well, that was fun,” Julian said out in the park afterwards. “What now?”

“Well, that depends. Eleni, what do you want to do?”

“Yes, I’m going to have a coffee with Hazel, if that’s OK, and then join you for lunch?”

“Great. There you are Suzy. Away you go.”

Suzy had a taxi waiting for Louise and Ebony, who were going off to make a video with Marcus, and be guests of honour at the company Christmas lunch, and Eloise was going with them. Kayla was going off in her mini limo to do something of her own. Suzy, Layna and Joe were off to a corporate meeting with their original sponsor and a group of his investors, and then their common lunch. And Julian and Larissa ... well, they had an invitation to have coffee with Robert and Elise at some cafe in the city. Suzy had handled that one, and wondered why there, but whatever.

They’d downgraded to a taxi now, though they still had one of Larissa’s security team with them. The taxi dropped them off outside the cafe, and Robert and Elise were sitting inside at the back, empty space all around them.

“Larissa!” Elise stood, and Robert did too, and she hugged and kissed them both, and Elise did for Julian too. Julian got a very meaningful handshake from Robert. Once pleasantries had been exchanged, Robert got down to business.

“Well, both of you, we need to express our gratitude to you. You both gave very generously to us. Julian, when you visited us, I expected to you to lecture us about our moral inadequacies. Instead, you let us learn those for ourselves, and gave us a solid business presentation. For free, but better than many I’ve paid significant sums of money for. And then I was sure you’d demand to know how we were going to respond, but you left it to me. Thank you for your respect.”

Julian nodded his head. “Thanks. We have some practice at this, you know.”

“I’m sure you do, but still, those are choices you made.”
