Dawn busts in a crime, gold on every wall, no hint of apology. Waking first, I always do, the old survival clock ticked to what men call “witching hour.” The yacht sleeps silent in the marina, tied up in its slip, gentle creak with every lazy wave. My skin smells of salt, of last night’s sexercise, and my hair tangles in the crook of Skyler’s arm.

Breathing slow, steady, his face saintlike but with the jawline of an assassin.

Sheets slide down my back, cool where the air hits, warm where his body presses up. With one of his arm under my neck, Sky’s sprawled out, the other arm’s looped heavy over my waist. The covers tangle at our hips, but I can see his body’s outline—stronger now, even after a week away from home. The blue of his shoulder’s still striped from sunburn, the shape of my teeth a faint pink on his chest. Staring at the mark I want to bite it deeper. To leave a map so he never forgets who brought him here.

No stink of hangover. No guilty rush to the bathroom. No phone chirps, no work calls, no mess to clean up except the one in my heart. Taking in the high ceiling, the wall of glass, the way the curtain blows in the open window, I blink against the glare. The marina’s all hush, the soft drone of a fishing boat of in the distant clamor of seagulls scavenging for breakfast.

However, Skyler doesn’t stir. He sleeps so hard, trusting the world not to eat him. Memory moves back in time, I used to watch him sleep when he was a baby. Perche on the edge of the crib with muscles locked. While praying he wouldn’t vanish with my next breath. Now I study him for different reasons.

Greedy possessive longings, him and me, against the world.

Peeling myself from the bed, I’m careful not to wake him, twaddle to the bathroom. The cold tile shocks my feet. Frist, I rinse my face, run cold water over my wrists. In the mirror, I saw last night’s afterglow. Swollen lips, skin flushed, the shadow of Skyler’s stubble-burn still dusted along my neck. Truth is, I’m not young, not anymore, but I look good. Better than I deserve. Touching my cheek, I lean close, and smile at the girl in the mirror.

The bitch smirks back, sly, alive.

When I slip back into bed, burrow under his arm, rest my head on his chest. Smelling the coconut, chlorine, a little bit like the cheap aftershave from the duty-free, and I snuggle into him. kissing the center of his chest, I move up to his jaw, and his cheek. Groaning, he squints at the light, tries to roll over, but I pin him in place with one leg hooked over his hips.

“Morning,” I say, the word’s a melody, bright, sharp, with my heart racing.

Grumbling, Sky cracks one eye.

“Fuck, what time is it?”

Truth is, I don’t care, so I don’t check. Snaking my hand under the sheet, I slide it down his body, let my nails scrape along the line of his ribs. His breath catches, I feel the shift from sleep to wakefulness in a single heartbeat.

“Oh, Mommy, I could get used to this,” he says, grins, drowsy but wicked.

Slipping my hand between his legs, I palm him, and he wakes up all over again. Morning wood turns in seconds, to a urgent, fierce heat. Stroking him gentle, thumb swirling over the head, the way I remember other men enjoyed, but with Skyler its all new. When he tries to kiss me, I dodge, sink my teeth into his shoulder instead.

“Yont to?” I ask, with my full-on hick voice teasing.

Nodding, he says nothing.

Not letting up, I climb on top. Straddling him, the sheet sliding off my back, baring everything to the sun, the world outside. Oh, God, how I love the way he looks at me. Hungry, a little in awe, he never dreamed he’d have this. Guiding him in, angle myself right, and slide easing down, filling me with him.

And he moans, loud, the sound fills the cabin.

Riding him slow at first, turning harder as passions grow. Wanting him to feel every inch, to remember this all the way back to California. If he ever fucks another woman, I must be the best.

Grabbing my ass, his fingers digging in, he tries to buck up, but I slam him back down, pin him to the mattress.

Gasping, “Oh, fucking Jesus, Mom—”

Putting a hand over his mouth, I shush him. “Hey, baby, you don’t have to think.”

Closing his eyes, he gives in. Hands explore my body, everywhere at once, he’s greedy but careful. Cupping my breasts, Sky’s thumbs circle the nipples. Letting them bounce free, loving the way they move. He traces the scar on my side, the one I got falling off a jungle gym in second grade. Sliding down to my hips, moves to my thighs, and squeezes me so hard I squeak.

Shattering around him, I lose it first, body clenching, nerves on fire. Crying out, I dig my nails into his chest. Riding the wave until it crests, falls away. Staring at me, his eyes wide, mouth open. Faster now, he moves, desperate, and I guide him with both hands, show him exactly how.

After so many years of celibacy, this new normal is powerful.

Grabbing my waist, he slams up into me, once, twice, and freezes. Pulsing inside me, hot, sharp, he cums. Collapsing, limp, I plunge on top of him, both of us slick, panting. For a minute we don’t speak, breathing, in sync. The room fills with light, with the sound of the sea, with the proof that nothing else in the world matters.

First, Skyler breaks the silence. Turning his head, he stares me down.

“Um, Mom, you know you’re my first, right?”

Shocked, I freeze. Every part of me goes still. Searching his face for the punchline, the joke, the lie. Trying to laugh it off, but my voice cracks.

“No way, I thought, what’s her name, and you.”

Shaking his head, gentle. “Not her, not anyone, I swear.”

Dumbfounded, I gaze at him. The air goes thin, tight, like the world’s holding its breath. My mind runs every possible timeline. The parties, the prom, the months locked up in his room after the divorce. Impossible, he hasn’t gotten laid and I can’t believe it, but I do. The truth is in the way he gazes at me. The pride, wonder, the awe.

Cupping his face, I stare into his eyes.

“Oh, my, I should’ve known,” I say, voice barely a whisper.

“Well, Mom, you’ll be a hard act to follow,” Skyler says, and smiles, soft.

My heart splits in two. The words bring the mother out, I want to cradle him, to break him, to make him mine for the rest of time. Kissing him hard, I taste salt, something sweeter, and filled with love. I hold his face in both hands, stroking his hair, telling him he’s amazing.

Shyly, he laughs, but he loves it. Oh, yes, a mother can tell. While I come down, he holds me tight, all the way through the aftershocks.

We lie there, tangled, sheets half off the bed, sun climbing higher with every minute. The world outside starts to wake up, but I don’t care. This is all that matters. Me, him, together, the old rules dead, buried, a new world where we have no rules to keep us apart.

Kissing his neck, his chest, the hollow of his hip. I tell him he’s the best I’ve ever had, I mean it. I mean every word.

Trying to memorize the way it feels to be someone’s first, I close my eyes, contemplating being his only lover ever.

The second time’s never like the first. The air goes thick, the rules get shredded, nobody’s make believe anymore. I lie on my back, sheets twisted under my shoulders, eyes pinned to the ceiling. The room’s full of that white, syrupy light you only get in Spain, all the shadows drawn sharp, blue. Skyler’s propped on his side, tracing the seam of my thigh with his finger, no rush, no shame, soaking up the territory.

We haven’t left the bed. My stomach grumbles, but I don’t move. I stretch my toes to the edge of the mattress, groan, letting my arm flop over my head. The world outside could burn down, I’d still be here, waiting for the next touch.

He studies me like a painting, head cocked, eyes flicking from my face to my chest to the wreckage of my hair. I squirm under the attention, but secretly I love it. Nobody’s ever looked at me like this—hungry, but gentle, the way a kid looks at a present he’s not sure he deserves.

The clock on the nightstand ticks up past eight. Checkout’s at eleven, bags half-packed by the door, but neither of us wants to move. I roll over, reach for him, pull him on top of me.

“Again?” he asks, but the answer’s already in his eyes.

Wrapping my legs around his waist, I nod, hook him tight to me. I guide his cock in, holding him, keeping him from rushing. Letting him fill me one inch at a time. He grunts, shudders, but holds still. He waits for me to move.

“Like this,” I say, and rock my hips up, show him the angle, the rhythm, the way to drag the tip across the spot that makes me twitch. He watches, focused, tries it himself. He gets it wrong at first, too quick, but I stop him with a hand on his ass, pulling him back.

“Slow,” I whisper. “You’re not racing me.”
