The yacht’s deck glows gold, every rail, cushion, surface, dusted with the last fire of sunset. The coast’s a jag of black cliffs on one side, the open sea melts away on the other. I suck in the brine, the burnt tang of candle wax, the stink of whatever the galley’s charring for us. We sit at a table small enough to call it a secret, the bow pointed straight at the bleeding sun. The crewmember flits on the edges, white gloves, navy shirt, face blank as a card dealer’s.
Wearing my sundress, blue with white flowers, the one that goes see-through when wet. The bikini underneath, still salty, twisted from the last swim. The truth is, I haven’t touched my hair since the cave. Letting it dry wild, ropey. The breeze stirs it every second, keeps blowing strands in my mouth. For this night, I don’t care. Licking my lips, taste the ocean, gaze at Skyler staring at me.
Whether he’s shed the shyness or learned to fake it, I’m not sure. Shirtless under a borrowed linen overshirt, he leans back in his chair, the buttons crooked and the sleeves rolled. His chest is streaked red with sunburn. When the captain walks by, Sky doesn’t flinch, doesn’t glance away when my eyes drag over his collarbones. Without asking, he pours me wine. fills his own, and holds the glass like he was born to it.
The first course lands—something raw, pink, folded into petals with black seeds scattered on top. Taking a slice, I hold it in two fingers and offer it across the table. When Sky opens his mouth, his tongue flicks the juice. Sliding the flesh between his lips, I let my fingers rest a second too long. Gazing at me, his eyes never dropping, he bites.
“Well, you’ve always been such a quick learner,” I say, loud enough for the words to ride the breeze.
He chews, swallows, wipes his mouth on a napkin, but his eyes burn. “Yeah, uh-hu, you’re a wonderful teacher,” he says, grins, sharp private.
Popping the same fruit into my mouth, licking the juice off the tip of my finger. The taste is pure sugar and sour on the back, and I chase it with a gulp of wine. All I want is to purr, or scream, or upend the table. Instead, I cross my legs, swing one foot, and let my knee nudge the tablecloth.
Course two. Something white, grilled, shell still on, fanned like a prehistoric bug. The crew pours more wine, lays new forks, but doesn’t look us in the face. Spearing the food, I fork it into Skyler’s mouth, and go for my own. Showing his weirdness, he studies the way I lick my teeth. The way I suck the meat off the shell. The way I laugh, low, when a drop lands on my chest rolls down between my breasts.
Leaning across, his voice hushed and steady.
“Hey, you missed a spot,” he says, pointing to the bead of juice, tracking it with his gaze.
Sliding my finger along the line, I wipe it up and pop it into my mouth.
“Better?”
“Much.” Then bobs his head.
My hand drifts to his thigh under the table, a test, palm flat, thumb drawing lazy loops on the sunburnt skin. Not jumping out of his skin, he parts his knees and lets me in. Mirroring mine, his climbs the inside of my thigh, but only just. We could be two strangers eating quietly, except for the slow escalation of touch, the way neither of us breaks.
The captain brings a new plate, sets it down, and clears the old. With a sparkling smile, he bows and moves on. Flashing him an expression, all invitation, to see if he’ll take the bait. He doesn’t. Probably forbidden to fuck the guests. His loss.
Skyler’s knee bumps mine. Leaning in, he brings the conversation back. “Remember when Dad tried to grill fish and burned it on the grill?”
Spitting wine, I laugh.
“He blamed the wind.”
“Then you threw the fish, plate and all, off the balcony. Remember?”
“That plate had it coming.” Grabbing his wrist under the table, I squeeze it. “Come to think about it, I should’ve thrown him off, too.”
Choking out a laugh, he says, “Yeah. Maybe.”
The next plate comes, this time beef, bleeding pink juice. I don’t bother with a knife. Slicing a piece, I hold it up, wait. Sky takes it from my fingers, chews, licks the tip before letting go. His eyes shine.
“Honestly, I like this,” he says. “All of it.”
Finishing my wine, I stretch out. Letting my hand climb his leg higher. Feeling the tension, the twitch under my fingers, the way his hips angle up. Moving further, my thumb draws circles closer, closer, and lands on the heat at the inseam. Slowly, I rub his cock, it swells, and he shudders.
“Mmm.”
The last of the sun flares vanishes into the water. The deck goes all candles, the sky a velvet blue above. Crew clears the table and resets for dessert. The plate is tiny, two bites, sweet and sour. I feed him one, take the second for myself, swipping the leftover cream with my finger. Offer it to him, he licks it, tongue slow and deliberate.
“Just so you know, you’re better than any man I’ve ever met,” I say, for the first time all night, I mean it without the joke.
He squeezes my hand, voice lower.
“Becha, say that to all the boys?”
Laughing, loud and sharp.
“No. Never. Only you.”
The wind shifts. Skyler leans in, lips inches from mine.
“Should we go below deck?” A lover’s invitation, too early.
“Not yet.” I trail my hand back down, give him one last squeeze, letting go. “Let’s watch the moon come up.”
He sits back, calm, collected, king of the world.
I toast him with the last glass of wine. “To you, Sky. My best student.”
Raising his own, he grins, taps it to mine.
The deck tilts. The world resets. The old rules die with the sun. I breathe deep, wonder how many ways I can break us before morning.
The sky’s gone from blue to ink. The coast’s a necklace of gold lights, each one strung for a mile before the cliffs devour them. The captain steers us through the slow drift of evening, not a care in his head. Wind hums through the rails, cooler now, teasing goosebumps up my arms. I drain the last of the wine, taste the tang of my own sweat, decide: it’s time to swim.
“Let’s cool off,” I say, and Skyler nods, already peeling off his overshirt. He kicks off his shoes, stands barefoot, waits for my move. When I slide the sundress over my head, toss it onto the deck, and stand in nothing but the blue bikini. My skin hums under his gaze, even after hours in the sun. Bold hungry, his eyes roam, he doesn’t look away.
We slip down the stairs to the swim platform. The yacht’s wake makes the steps wet and dangerous, but I take them fast, heart pounding. I run my hand along the rail, feel the metal cold against my palm. The sea’s black as tar, but you can smell the warmth on it, the way it holds the day even when the sky forgets.
He jumps first, no hesitation, vanishes into the dark. For a second, the world blurs, I follow, legs slicing the water, the shock of wet stealing my breath, no sound, no air, the crush of salt cold. I surface, hair slicked back, mouth open, gasp in a lungful of oxygen.
Skyler floats five feet away, grinning, water shining on his face. He kicks over to me, smooth as a shark, grabs my ankle under the surface, and tugs me under.
I shriek, come up fighting, water spraying everywhere. I splash him in the eyes, he comes after me, grabs my waist, spins me. I lock my legs around his, both of us sinking, both of us laughing. I swim out further, away from the yellow wedge of light from the yacht. Out here, the stars double, triple, drown every thought of land.
Treading water, arms out, Sky circles behind me. Sliding his hands under my arms, lifts me up, like I’m weightless. “Um, Mommy, you cold?” he asks, voice rough.
“No.” I tilt my head back, rest it on his shoulder, let him hold me up. “I am amazed by you.”
He floats with me, both our bodies drifting, skin barely touching. A school of plankton flashes under my foot—green sparks, nothing. I kick, make a whirlpool, the water glows around us, every move bright as electricity.
