March 31st, 2011 – University of Iowa

Mary sat lost in idle thought, looking out the window as a steady stream of students moved along the sidewalk, heading towards their next class. After a few moments, her attention returned to Mike as he set down what she considered the perfect coffee for her survival here at school.

They had been coming to this shop on a regular basis since they first met four years earlier at new student orientation. Outside of her dorm room, she considered this little shop, with its mismatched tables and chairs and indie music simmering lowly in the background to be one of the most comfortable places in the city.

Mike was in the middle of explaining his latest idea to prank his roommate Danny tomorrow when she happened to notice what looked like a celestial formation on the television in the corner.

As she was reading the closed captioning CNN was reporting Astronomers have discovered an unusual formation located roughly halfway between the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies.

Halfway between. She did the math without thinking. That means they were seeing it as it had been over a million years ago.

She watched it for another moment. It was ... pretty.

April 6th, 2011

Mary walked straight to one of the research tables in the business library. She would only have about an hour before the exam in her next class and just wanted a peaceful space to review her notes.

Sitting at the table, there were two other people working on their own tasks when she noticed the folded newspaper lying across from her. The headline grabbed her attention; “Space Anomaly Confirmed.” Grabbing the paper, she continued to read it.

The space anomaly which was originally detected by Dr. Bernard Loeck (pronounced luck) on March 30th has been confirmed by several observatories around the globe.

The anomaly, which has been unofficially named the Loeck Cloud, is located approximately halfway between our solar system and the Andromeda Galaxy. “The current trajectory is not clear, but it certainly appears to be headed directly toward our Milky Way Galaxy” says Dr. Bernard Loeck.

Several space agencies are currently working towards getting some of their space-based equipment, which do not have to deal with the Earth’s atmosphere, in position to better study and understand the Loeck Cloud.

I would expect that we will have a much better understanding of what this cloud will do within the next 48 hours” Loeck said.

I wonder what Mike thinks of this. She wondered. Mike has developed a personal philosophy of the Universe and our place within it. He often tells her, ‘The Universe provides everything needed for everything to exist.’ What does this cloud provide?

The sudden sound of a backpack being dropped onto the table broke her from the contemplation of the Universe and reminded her of what she came her to do.

April 9th, 2011

Mary’s accounting notes mixed with Mike’s business plans sat abandoned on the coffee table while the two of them passionately made out on the couch.

Twenty minutes earlier, she was fully committed to analyzing the spreadsheets in front of her looking for hidden errors when Mike had returned with a carrier full of coffee for the two of them, immediately distracting her with that crooked smile she still hadn’t fully learned to resist after 5 years together.

“You realize, you are single handedly responsible for my impending failure to graduate.” She joked, as he leaned down to lay a kiss on her forehead.

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.” He replied while pulling out her coffee.

She took a sip before setting the cup down on the coffee table beside her laptop. Mike settled back onto the couch, one arm draping naturally around her shoulders as she tried, unsuccessfuly, to focus on the spreadsheet still glowing on the screen in front of her. It lasted maybe thirty seconds. “You’re staring at me again,” she said without looking up.

“I’m literally sitting next to you. It would be weird if I wasn’t.” Mary rolled her eyes just before he reached across her face to pull it into his so he could kiss her again.

Five years together had made moments like this effortless. Very dangerous whenever either of them actually needed to get work done.

Mike’s hand slowly slid along her side beneath the hem of her T-shirt while Mary scooted closer against him, surrendering any illusion of productivity.

The apartment door opened, announcing Rachel’s return. Stopping in her tracks, she groaned dramatically “Oh come on. Do you two ever take a night off?”

Mike barely lifted his lips from Mary “Not voluntarily.”

Rachel kicked the door shut behind her with her sandal covered foot. “I swear, I’m surprised I haven’t walked in here and accidentally become part of the foreplay.”

Mary giggled loudly, “Who says you haven’t? Besides, we were studying.”

Rachel looked down at the abandoned papers on the table “Yeah, you have. Anatomy I believe.”

Mary grabbed the throw pillow behind her and flung it at her roommate who caught it against her chest. “Anyway,” Rachel replied as she carried the grocery bag into the kitchen, “Have either of you seen the news today?”

Mike frowned slightly. “No. Why?”

Rachel walked back to the coffee table grabbing the remote and turning the channel to Fox News. “Apparently everybody downstairs thinks the world’s about to end because of that space cloud thing.”

Mary looked over toward the tv automatically. “The Loeck Cloud?”

“Yeah. Some government statement came out earlier and now everyone’s freaking out.” Rachel explained.

On the television, there was a special weekend edition of Fox Report, returning from a commercial, a bright red FOX NEWS ALERT banner stretched across the bottom of the screen while Julie Banderas sat behind a desk beside a large image of the anomaly.

“ ... continuing coverage tonight of what scientists are calling the Loeck Cloud, the unusual interstellar phenomenon currently moving toward the Milky Way Galaxy.”

Rachel dropped into the recliner across from the couch while Mike sat up slightly, his attention shifting fully toward the television now.

Julie continued. “Earlier today, federal officials confirmed increased coordination between state emergency management agencies and the Department of Homeland Security following updating projections regarding the cloud’s extremely fast-moving trajectory. Joining us tonight to discuss the situation is astronomy professor, Dr. Alan Mercer.”

The screen split to show Mercer seated remotely from an office somewhere.

Thank you for joining us Doctor.” She continued.

“Glad to be here.” He replied.

“Now obviously, there’s been growing concern over the last 24 hours. People are hearing words like ‘unknown phenomenon’ and ‘Earth intersection’ and they are naturally assuming the worst. So let me ask you. Should we be worried?”

Mercer paused as if composing his thoughts. “At this moment, there is no evidence suggesting the Loeck Cloud poses a direct threat to humanity. It appears, that based on current projections, it will likely pass through our region of space without any catastrophic consequences.”

Rachel folded her arms under her breasts immediately. Mike noticed out of the corner of his eye just how lovely that made them look. “That sounds so like a Keep Calm statement. I mean how can they know that. It was only discovered what, a couple of weeks ago.” She said.

Mary lightly elbowed Mike while Julie continued. “So why are so many emergency operations centers activating around the country?”

Dr. Mercer hesitated slightly before responding. “Well, I think they aren’t activating because of what the Cloud is going to do, but because of what people will do.”

Images of the cloud appeared on the screen and Mary couldn’t help but stare at what she found to be strangely beautiful.

Julie nodded slightly. “So, in your opinion Doctor, the real danger right now is public reaction.”

In many ways, yes.” Mercer replied calmly. “Human beings tend to fear what they don’t understand. And right now, there’s still a great deal we just don’t understand about the anomaly.”

Moving the interview along, Julie continued, “Now for people just tuning in tonight, NASA and several observatories are saying the cloud is moving at an incredibly high rate of speed. Some reports are even suggesting it will arrive HERE sometime next month.”

Mercer nodded carefully. “That is the current projection, yes.”

Giving a slight smile to change the temperature of the conversation, “Some of your colleagues have compared the possible effects to an unusually intense Northern Lights display. Is that a fair description?”
