The board met that afternoon.

I wasn’t there. I was in fourth period, history with Mr. Yamamoto, learning about the Supreme Court and the strange, fragile experiment that was the United States of America. But I could feel the meeting happening. The way you feel a storm coming, the pressure in the air, the sense that something was about to break.

My phone buzzed during class.

I didn’t look at it.

Mr. Yamamoto was talking about Roe v. Wade, about the right to privacy, about the ways the law tries to draw lines around bodies and decisions and the lives that happen in between.

“The right to privacy,” he said, “isn’t in the Constitution. Not explicitly. It was inferred from other amendments, other protections. And that’s made it vulnerable. Because what the Court infers, the Court can take away.”

He looked at me.

“The same is true for other rights. The right to expression. The right to be different. The right to exist in ways that make other people uncomfortable.”

The class turned to look at me.

“Lottie,” Mr. Yamamoto said, “do you have anything to add?”

I thought about the board meeting. About the seven people who were deciding my fate. About the conversation my father had started, and I was trying to finish.

“I think rights don’t matter if you’re too afraid to use them,” I said. “I think the only way to keep a right alive is to exercise it. Even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.”

Mr. Yamamoto nodded.

“That’s the most important thing I’ll teach you all year,” he said. “Write it down.”

The class wrote it down.

I wrote it down too.

The board’s decision came at 4:30 PM, just as the final bell was ringing.

My mother was waiting in the parking lot, not in the car, not by the fence, but standing at the edge of the sidewalk, her phone in her hand, her face pale.

“Lottie,” she said.

“What happened?”

“The board denied your appeal.”

I stopped walking.

“They’re expelling you. Effective immediately. You’re not allowed on campus after today.”

The words hung in the air heavy and sharp, like a blade that had been thrown and had finally landed.

“Can they do that?” Maggie asked. She was beside me, her hand on my shoulder, her face twisted with anger.

“They can do whatever they want,” my mother said. “They’re the board.”

“So what do we do now?”

My mother looked at me. Her eyes were wet, but she wasn’t crying. Not yet.

“We fight,” she said. “We take them to court. We found a lawyer. We do whatever it takes.”

“That’s what Dad would have done,” I said.

“Yes,” my mother said. “It is.”

The car ride home was silent.

Not the comfortable silence, the heavy one. The kind that settles over you when you’ve lost something, when you’re not sure what comes next, when the world has shifted, and you’re still trying to find your footing.

I leaned my head against the window and watched North Phoenix scroll past.

The Smittys appeared in the distance. The lights were still blazing, the parking lot was still full, the checkout lanes were still waiting for the next person whose heart might stop before they could swipe their loyalty card.

I didn’t look away this time.

I stared at it. At the building where my father had died. At the place that had become a tombstone, a monument, a reminder that the world was random and cruel and didn’t care about my plans.

“Mom,” I said.

“Yes?”

“I want to go in.”

“Into where?”

“The Smitty’s. I want to go inside.”
