The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, or that’s what they say anyways. It’s what I had been hearing my entire life, as I sat day dreaming about that other side at my boring office job. What even is that other side? Is it a new job? Is it a new car? Is it a new life entirely? These thoughts consumed most of my days recently. This can’t be all that there is to life, surely.
I don’t have it so bad when you think about it but I feel like a 21 year old fresh out of college in his first job shouldn’t already be secretly wishing for a way out right? If you were to look at my life from an outside perspective I have it made. I’m was 5’10 165lb white guy with an athletic build, reddish brown hair, blue eyes, straight teeth, and a decent size dick. I had a good job, a reliable car, and a two bedroom apartment where I live alone. By today’s standards this was the American dream. So why did I feel like something was missing?
“Calvin, stop staring off into space and get back to work! I don’t pay you to fuck off all day” my boss Mr. Graham barked at me.
“You really don’t pay much at all.” I thought.
I snapped out of my daze and continued to mindlessly punch numbers into a spread sheet. Oh the joys of entry level data entry!
As I knocked out the rest of my tasks I overheard Janine and Luke from the next cubicle over talking about the solar eclipse that is supposed to be visible by the time we get off work.
“You wanna come watch the eclipse with me Luke? I have an extra pair of glasses if you want!” Janine said.
“That’s all made up. Everyone knows it’s just a myth so companies can sell those glasses.” Luke shot back.
“you’re crazy you’ll go blind”
“Hmm, maybe I’ll go to the park and watch it.” I thought.
The rest of the day went on as usual. The regular water cooler talk. The forced smiles. The awkward small talk pretending to care about what my coworkers did with their weekends. It’s not as if I didn’t care but there’s only so many times I could listen to Dave tell me about the perfect way to smoke a rack of ribs or Charlotte tell me about her daughters dance recitals.
As I finally finished up the last of my work I logged off of my computer and grabbed my backpack to head out.
It felt like I received a shot of energy as I left the office building felt the suns rays beating on my skin. It’s crazy to think in just a couple minutes it will be dark out. I was starting to get excited as I got closer to the park. I had always loved eclipses growing up but this was the first time I’d get to experience one in person.
