Derek showed up on the day of the ritual, standing casually by the entrance as the acolytes scurried about in a panic because of his presence. One of the acolytes came back with the head priest in tow, his face a mixture of displeasure and fear.
“My lord, it is highly unconventional for—” the old man started when Derek gave him a look that made him question his own worth.
“I’m here to witness the rising of my queen,” said Derek coldly. His eyes were frozen, still, and unmoving. He tilted his head toward the door behind him. “I have a screaming piece of flesh outside. Do what you must.”
The head priest, his face as weathered as the mountains themselves, turned grey as he fell silent, averting his eyes away. He bowed deeply, his initial objection dying on his lips. The King Supreme was here, and his will was law. The old man instructed the acolytes to deal with the prisoner, Lilac’s blood sacrifice, while he himself led the Blood Wolf toward the ritual chamber.
In her own room, Lilac was getting dressed in a thin, white woolen robe with the help of Mina. She felt a shiver run down her spine that had nothing to do with the cold air. Three days of fasting and soaking in water had left her physical body weak, but her mind was now attuned to the arcane power hiding in the shadows and from the flickers of candlelight. They whispered questions, testing her, and she only had one answer for them.
“I am the Blood Queen,” Lilac repeated to herself.
An acolyte opened the door to her room without as much as a knock, gesturing for Lilac to follow while stopping Mina from following. The cloaked figure pointed to the single wooden chair in the simple room, and only after Mina obediently sat on it did the acolyte close the door and walk ahead through the dark hallways.
Lilac felt her legs weak, her steps staggering and her heart palpitating in an uneven rhythm. Her body felt heavy with each step, and the whispers grew louder.
All this for a monster?
He violated you, humiliated you, and you’re willingly mutilating yourself to stay by his side?
You’re not a Blood Queen, you’re just a common whore.
A dull pain was starting to form behind her eyes, and the air felt thin. The acolyte must have noticed her increasingly labored breathing because they were now standing still in the middle of the dimly lit hallway. The cloaked figure said nothing while Lilac leaned against the wall to gather herself.
All this because he denied you his bed?
You’re disgusting!
Lilac let out a loud scream that echoed through the hallways, her voice bouncing against the walls and vibrating within her bones. She waited for the whispers and the shadows to come back, and when none did, she straightened up her back and nodded to the acolyte who had remained unperturbed through her earlier outburst. They resumed their journey through the dark tunnels in silence and with a new resolve in Lilac’s heart.
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lilac entered the ritual chamber that was lit with a mysterious source of light from the walls. After closer observation, she noticed that they were a collection of lanterns in random sizes and shapes. The residents of the temple must’ve used whatever they could find for this purpose. Lilac didn’t have the energy, or the interest, to think about how troublesome it must be to maintain the flames.
As her eyes adjusted to the domed room, Lilac caught a tall, slim figure standing quietly under the shadows. Her heart skipped when she recognized the bright blue eyes of her husband and his usual smirk plastered on his angelic face. She looked at him, her amber eyes clear and unflinching. Derek was dressed casually in his riding attire and leather coat, and he had failed if the goal was to look inconspicuous. His beauty and radiance were an anomaly in this space, and it stirred the shadows. Her spirit was honed to a razor’s edge, and she could sense the spirits’ discomfort in the air.
He reeks of blood.
That is no wolf. ‘Tis a vile beast.
The whore and the beast.
Derek watched in curiosity while Lilac flinched and shook her head as if she was fighting off phantom beings. He looked around, and even though he had no spiritual powers, he could tell the presence of shadows that was lurking deep within the walls. This was the first time he had ever stepped foot in this temple, and he had intended to make it his last.
Slowly, Lilac knelt by the stone slab as instructed by the old priest. She had her back to Derek, and he could feel the tensing of her muscles as she lowered her head in prayer, her platinum hair cascading down her shoulders and the curve of her body onto the floor. He found it both amusing and irritating how small and fragile Lilac looked.
The prisoner was brought in by cloaked figures, his screams coming through the tunnels and somewhat silencing the shadows and everything else. He was bound in shackles, battered, pleading to be killed. The moment he noticed Derek’s presence, his screams grew louder and shrill.
“Do you truly wish to be killed, prisoner? To surrender your soul for your queen?” asked the priest as the mangled man was hoisted up the stone slab.
