April woke up earlier than usual on Tuesday, buzzing with energy even before coffee. Evan had already left for work, but she was still in a great mood from the previous day. She had a long list of things to do at Helios, and the thought of debugging lines of code excited her like it did when she first discovered the passion. Pulling on a blue cardigan over a t-shirt, she quickly made herself a cup of coffee and rushed out the door.

Stopping to chat with Hassan, April took her time getting to her desk. She made herself another cup of coffee in the break room before finally going to her cubicle. April barely had time to set her purse on the desk when Lena appeared, arms crossed and her lips pursed.

“Good morning, sunshine,” Lena smirked. “How much caffeine did you have today?”

“Not enough,” April grinned, holding up her cup. “I’ll take more if you’ve got some.”

Lena shook her head, her brown ponytail bouncing. “Coffee won’t fix the mess from last night. We still have a memory leak in the customer analytics job. It’s worse than Friday.”

“Worse than two million rows being loaded before filtering?” April arched an eyebrow.

“Worse,” Lena confirmed. “One of the scripts we didn’t touch got triggered by the backup process. The system spent the night doing millions of calculations that were completely useless.”

April followed Lena to her cubicle. “You didn’t catch this before?”

“I didn’t,” Lena admitted. “That’s why you’re here. Work your magic.”

“I’ll try,” April giggled.

For the next hour they searched the code together. April’s fingers flew across the keyboard while Lena pointed out potential problems. The two women joked and laughed through the morning, reminding each other of bugs that had survived multiple updates. There was one weird bug a month ago that kept vanishing and coming back.

“See?” April smiled, looking up at Lena when the script started running smoothly. “Nothing that can’t be fixed.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Lena rolled her eyes. “Genius.”

“Hey, you’re one of the best engineers here,” April insisted. “You only graduated a few months ago. Experience will teach you things no college course will.”

The ladies worked separately for the rest of the morning, fixing issues and documenting new code. They took their lunch hour at the usual time, making sure to get their favorite table in the break room. April unwrapped her sandwich while Lena had heated up some leftovers in the microwave.

“You’re suspiciously cheerful today,” Lena said finally.

“I’m a bubbly person,” April shrugged, taking a bite of her sandwich.

“You hadn’t been lately,” Lena pointed out. “Yesterday you were grumbling about your love life and eating stress candy. Today you’re practically glowing.”

“April felt her cheeks warm slightly. “I’m not glowing.”

Lena leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands. “Spill. Did you finally get some good dick last night?”

“I didn’t get any dick,” April said, unable to keep the smile off her face. “It’s nothing.”

“The smile says otherwise,” Lena replied, refusing to look away.

“We had a nice night,” April admitted.

“Define good,” Lena instructed.

“No sex, but we spent time together,” April explained. “We talked, ate dinner. Watched a movie. He actually held me on the couch.”

“Wait,” she said slowly. “Held you? Like voluntarily?”

“Yes,” April laughed. “Voluntarily.”

“I’ll be damned,” Lena leaned back in her chair. “What changed?”

April picked at her sandwich wrapper for a moment before answering. “I bought a book.”

“Uh, and gave him an ultimatum: read or cuddle?” Lena frowned.

“No,” the blonde scoffed. “I found a book at that old bookstore nearby. Secrets of the Passionate Arts.”

“I thought you said you didn’t get any dick?” Lena covered her mouth with her hand as she giggled uncontrollably.

“I didn’t!” April hissed.

“Okay, so how did a sex manual help you bond with your boyfriend?” Lena asked when her laughter subsided.

“It’s not a sex manual,” April protested. “It’s more like an ancient relationship guide.”

“Uh-huh,” Lena nodded.

“I’m serious,” she insisted. “The first lesson was about awareness. Paying attention to the other person. Little things like posture, tone of voice. You know, stuff like that.”

“Okay...” Lena trailed off.

“I guess it made me notice Evan as a person more, and he responded to that,” April explained. “I mean, he did offer to get me dinner before he knew about the book, but that’s probably because he felt bad about the weekend.”

“He probably realized how bad he screwed up Sunday,” Lena snorted. “Seriously, you were naked in bed and he walked off. Pathetic.”

“Yeah, maybe the book will help in that area, too,” April sighed. “It is an odd book.”

“How so?” Lena asked.

“Well, it feels hundreds of years old, but it’s written in modern English,” she answered slowly. “Handwritten. Also, I could have sworn one of the lines changed.”

“Changed?” Lena repeated. “What does that mean?”

“There was one line I read in the bookstore, then when Evan read it, the line was different than I remembered,” April explained. “And I could have sworn the illustrations changed a bit.”

“Got it,” Lena nodded. “You’re not happy because of your relationship. You’re smoking some good shit.”

“Oh, shut up,” April giggled. “I’m sure I was just imagining things.”

“Hey, if the book got Evan to step up and act like a real boyfriend, maybe the monks knew what they were doing,” Lena reasoned.

“Monks?” she questioned.

“Who else writes ancient passion manuals?” Lena grinned.

“Okay, you might have a point,” April admitted.

“Of course I do,” she nodded, taking a bite of chicken. “By the way, if you’re going to follow a seduction guide, you need to commit.”

“How do you mean?” April sipped her drink.

Lena leaned forward with an evil smirk. “It means you need better undies.”

April nearly choked on her soda. “That again?”

“That again,” Lena confirmed. “Your relationship has been struggling. My old tips stand. Talk dirty, seduce him. The book will help. He’s paying attention now; use that to your advantage.”

“Okay, you’re right,” April nodded, her blonde locks bobbing.

“Let’s grab drinks after work,” Lena offered. “I’ll help you pick out a few things. Maybe we can even find something with one-day shipping.”

“Sure, let’s do it,” April agreed.

The afternoon at work passed more slowly than April expected. After returning from lunch with Lena, the petite blonde tried to focus on a new batch of code reviews. Normally she enjoyed digging through another person’s code and tightening things up, but her concentration kept drifting. She eventually realized she had read the same function three times.

April sighed softly and leaned back in her chair as she ran her fingers through her hair. Her mind kept wandering back to the strange book sitting on her coffee table at home. Old. Handwritten. Weird. The idea of an ancient relationship guide actually helping was ridiculous, yet she couldn’t deny that things with Evan had felt different the night before. Warmer. Easier. Like it was when they first got together.

“Focus,” she muttered under her breath, resting her fingers on the keyboard again.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed, ruining any attempt at concentrating. April glanced down, expecting spam or maybe a text from her mother. Instead she saw Evan’s name. That was strange. They hadn’t texted during the day in a long time. Unless it was about groceries or bills.

Evan: Hey, how’s your day going?

April: Pretty good, actually. Fixed a couple of bugs this morning. You?

Evan: Busy morning, but I’m working from home the rest of the day.

Evan: I might have looked at the book.

Evan: That first line about awareness stuck with me.

April: Yeah?

Evan: It made me realize I’ve been a little absent lately.

April: You have been.

Evan: I’m sorry. Last night was nice.

April: It was. I missed cuddling. We should do it more often.

Evan: We should. Tonight?

April: I’d like that. I’m going to get drinks with Lena after work. Read and cuddle in bed?

Evan: It’s a date. I’ve got a virtual meeting in a few minutes. Talk later, babe.

For a few moments after placing her phone back on the desk, April simply stared at her monitor with a small smile on her face. Maybe the book did help them both recognize they had been taking each other for granted. Lena’s advice was good; Evan and April were rebuilding their emotional connection, so they should also rebuild their physical connection.

The afternoon at Helios didn’t feel quite so long.

Lena left before April, and the blonde found her friend waiting at a small table upon arriving at the bar near Helios. The place was dimly lit as April walked through the bar, the murmur of after-work chatter mixing with music drifting through the air. Lena’s wineglass was half-empty as she scrolled through her phone in a corner booth.

“You’re late,” Lena commented without looking up.

“By five minutes,” April replied, sliding into the booth.

“Unacceptable,” Lena smirked, setting her phone down.

April rolled her eyes as a server appeared to take her order. “I’ll have a glass of whatever my friend’s having, thank you.”

“So,” Lena leaned forward when the server walked away, “tell me why you’re still smiling like someone slipped serotonin into your drink.”

“It’s nothing,” April said, trying and failing to look innocent.

“That’s at least the third time you’ve said that today,” Lena snorted. “Try again.”

“He texted me this afternoon,” April sighed, pulling out her phone. “And not about laundry or bills.”

“Voluntarily?” Lena asked with a raised brow.

“Yes, stop asking that,” April giggled, handing her phone across the table. “I don’t have his balls in a vice that I tighten if he doesn’t obey.”

“Now that’s a fun idea,” the brunette nodded approvingly as she accepted the phone.

Lena skimmed the conversation, her expression shifting from amused to impressed. “Well damn, look at that. He’s self-aware!”

“I know,” April said, taking her phone back. “He apologized. We’re gonna read in bed and cuddle tonight.”

“To ancient sex manuals,” Lena lifted her wine glass.

“It’s not a sex manual,” April mumbled, glancing away when Lena gave her an even look. “Well, not just a sex manual.”

The server returned a moment later with April’s wine. Lena smiled and held up her glass. “To mysterious old books that make Evan attentive and reflective.”

“To mysterious old books,” April clinked Lena’s glass. “That reminded both of us to pay attention.”

“Okay, phase one complete. You’ve got his attention and he knows he fucked up,” Lena said after sipping her wine. “Onto phase two. Romance and seduction. For that we need sexy outfits.”

“Do you really think dressing sexy is the way to go?” April asked. “I mean, I agree date nights are important. I’m just not sure about showing up in lace and garters.”

“First of all,” Lena said, holding up a finger, “lace is classy. Second, this isn’t about him.”

“It isn’t?” April looked confused.

“No,” Lena stated firmly. “It’s about you feeling confident. In yourself and in your relationship. You said you waited a while before going all the way, then you two went wild. You need to remember why you were confident enough and comfortable enough with him to let go.”

“Okay, that’s a good point,” April admitted.

“Also he’s been an ass,” Lena added. “You need to give him blue balls to the point he sprays in his boxers and begs for renewed access to the kitty.”

“Lena!” April gasped. “You’re terrible!”

“And yet I’m right,” Lena smirked, picking up her phone and texting April a link. “Go to this site. They have free two-day shipping and their stuff is gorgeous.”

“Do they have anything for girls with regular-size boobs,” April teased as she went to the site on her phone.

“Big boobs, small boobs, regular boobs,” Lena listed while April browsed. “Extra small boobs.”

“I’m a B-cup!” April looked up with mock-outrage. “That’s average ... I think.”

Lena giggled while April looked through the elegant, expensive lingerie. Silk. Lace. Satin. Some pieces were delicate and romantic. Others were significantly less subtle. There was one with no bra cups so that her boobs would just hang out. Nope. Way too obvious. April wanted something more subtle. Something teasing.

“Oh wow,” Lena murmured, staring at her phone.

“What?” April looked up.

“This one is perfect,” she replied, sending April the link. “It’s you. Not explicit, but teasing. Purple’s your color.”

April opened the link and saw a purple satin chemise with black lace trim. It fell to mid-thigh and had cute purple bows at the sides and one between her breasts. The v-neck showed quite a bit of cleavage, but the black lace trim would somewhat cover her. She liked the way the lace was above the bra cups and extended beneath her breasts. It was cute and sexy, and it came with a matching pair of purple lace panties.

“Okay, I really like it,” April admitted, her cheeks warm. “Like, REALLY like it.”

“You should get it,” Lena urged.

“Purple?” April questioned. “It also comes in blue and green. Green would match my eyes.”

“Nah, go with purple,” Lena confirmed. “It’ll look great with your light skin.”

“It’s in the cart,” April smiled softly.

“Perfect,” Lena nodded, sending April a few more links. “I sent a guide to dirty talk, that should help. And I think you should browse their costumes.”

April agreed, and the two ladies drank wine while giggling and browsing some of the options. Lena loved the sexy cop outfit, saying it would be awesome if she handcuffed Evan. The petite blonde shot that one down, and they both agreed the cheerleader thing was overdone.

Eventually they found a cute schoolgirl outfit that would look great with April’s glasses. White collared short-sleeve shirt, black tie, red-and-black pleated skirt. It also came with red ribbons she could use to tie her hair into pigtails. April’s face was red as she placed the order, buying the schoolgirl outfit and the lingerie.

Downing the last of her wine, April felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. That night she was just going to read and cuddle with Evan. It was a good start. The rest of the week suddenly felt full of possibility, and she wondered what the next lesson in the strange old book would be.

April unlocked the apartment door and stepped inside. Soft light spilled from the living room, and she could hear Evan’s voice as well. It sounded like he was finishing up a work call. April set her purse down and removed her shoes while Evan ended his conversation.

“Babe?” he called out. “Your dinner’s in the microwave.”

“Okay, thanks!” April replied.

Drinks with Lena had gone longer than she expected. It had been worth it. Her stomach growled as she headed into the kitchen and found the plate Evan had left her in the microwave. She started the microwave and grabbed a drink. The apartment felt comfortable. Peaceful.

The microwave beeped and she carried her dinner into the living room. Evan was sitting on the couch and the old green book was sitting on the coffee table in front of him. Secrets of the Passionate Arts. He’d definitely moved it. Sitting on the opposite side of the couch, April started eating while wondering what Evan had learned.

April ate quickly while watching a sitcom with Evan. The moment she returned to the couch after cleaning up, she grabbed the book and carefully opened it. Flipping past the introduction and first lesson, she smiled when she reached Lesson Two: Proximity. She was enthralled, her fingers running along the page as she read.

“Awareness awakens the heart,” April whispered to herself, feeling a comforting warmth spreading through her. “Proximity feeds its fire.”

The lesson explained that two people might care deeply for each other, yet drift apart if distance came between them. Distance wasn’t just about miles, but also the space between their bodies. Casual touches reminded the heart what it longed for. The page turned beneath her fingers.

Every tip made sense to her: sit closer, walk side-by-side, let your hands brush, hold hands. April devoured the next several paragraphs, loving the simplicity of the advice. Closeness created a subconscious awareness of a partner’s warmth and movement. She scooted closer to Evan without even thinking about it.

“You’re really into that book,” Evan commented.

“It’s intriguing,” April looked over at him, noticing he was wearing comfortable lounge pants and a gray t-shirt. “And I think it’s helping us.”

“Maybe it is,” he acknowledged. “Second lesson?”

“Mhm, proximity,” the blonde nodded. “People grow apart if they stop being close physically. Not just sex, just casual touches.”

“I think the book is right,” Evan shifted, draping an arm over her shoulders and making her skin tingle.

April looked up at him and softly pressed her lips against his. The kiss was soft and gentle, with April’s tongue only coming out after a few minutes. She gently probed his mouth, running her tongue along his as her hand rested on his thigh. It reminded April of their first kiss.

“Mm,” she hummed, pulling away.

“That was nice,” Evan whispered.

“It was,” April nodded, feeling the slow rise and fall of his breathing, his steady warmth.

A mischievous smile crossed his face. “Your breath smells like wine.”

“I didn’t have much,” April replied.

“You had fun tonight?” Evan asked.

“I did,” she confirmed.

“Good,” he pecked her lips.

They both looked down at the book at the same time, the illustration beneath the lesson catching their attention. It showed two figures sitting close together. The woman was leaning against the man while he had an arm around her shoulders. Her hair ... the same soft waves as April’s. She blinked and it once again looked like a simple sketch.

“Huh,” Evan commented.

“What?” April asked.

“For a second I thought that sketch had your hair, too,” he chuckled. “Remember? From last night?”

“Yeah,” she swallowed weakly. “Yeah, I remember.”
