Over the next weeks, Salim tried sending his Khati slave girl Horsetail to many jobs requiring manual labor but little skill. Mindful of her previous delinquency, he allowed shop owners and overseers to discipline her freely – as long as they didn’t cripple her more than she already was.
None of it stuck. Many just returned her without explanation.
