David was taking a heavy load this term. His Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings were full from eight a.m. to noon with Marketing Management, Data Science for Business, Structured Analysis for Unstructured Problems, and Intermediate Acting: Drama/Comedy.

The bonus for his heavy morning schedule was that by one on Fridays, he was done for the week.

Overall, he was taking a brutal seven classes; typically, the average student would take five. Still, it was what was needed if he were to complete his undergrad and master’s degrees in two years.

His other classes were Contemporary Issues for Competitive Strategy, Introduction to Directing, and Cinematic Production, which were held on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The latter two would complete his minor in film.

He’d skipped his Monday classes because Margaret, his tutor, had pointed out they would simply go over the syllabus and then be free to go. Based on his experience, the acting class would be the same. On Wednesday, Dr. Liao scheduled him for a complete physical that required David to go to the hospital for a scan of his head, due to his past concussions.

David was a bit early for his Marketing Management class, so he was able to grab a seat near the front and in the middle. He’d just set up his tablet to film the class when someone sat beside him. He glanced over and smiled.

“You’re a bad boy; you skipped your first two classes,” Crystal said.

She was in his Data Science for Business class as well as this one.

“Anything I should know?” David asked.

“She handed out the answers to the midterm. If you’re really nice to me, I might let you see them.”

“Tracy would want me to study instead of being nice.”

“I can already see she’s going to be a problem,” Crystal joked.

Before David could retort, their professor walked in and started class.

David was relieved to see Alyssa in both of his computer-related classes. He might actually have to cheat off her in those classes. She was busy getting a double major in computer science and business. Someday, she wanted to own her own firm.

Since Crystal was in his Data Science for Business class as well, he took the opportunity to introduce her to Alyssa.

“I need to introduce you to someone else,” David said between classes.

“Please don’t; your mom keeps me busy enough.”

“Would the lure of working with AIs tempt you?” David asked.

“Okay, that might be enough. Tell me more.”

David told her about Dare’s projects.

“Could I work remotely?” Alyssa asked.

“I don’t see why not. If you needed face-to-face conversations, you could video chat.”

“How would...” Alyssa began.

David held up his hands.

“This is the kind of stuff that’s above my pay grade. Plus, it makes my head hurt when Dare begins one of his rants. How about I call him and make the introduction, and you can talk to him directly?” David asked.

“You know, if we added an AI to help with queries, it would make the stuff I wrote for your mom kick ass.”

“The problem is, would my mom know what to ask?”

Alyssa chuckled.

“You don’t give your mother enough credit. She might be over thirty, but she’s not completely useless regarding technology.”

They were talking about the woman who hadn’t figured out that you were stranded if you left your key fob inside the car and walked away. His dad claimed she tended to do this when she was at least an hour from home, and he was responsible for helping her out for some reason.

She wouldn’t call one of her assistants because she felt foolish, so Rob received all those calls. David would bet his future jet that she would rather walk home if she had to call him or Greg because they would tease her mercilessly.

David’s acting class also had a familiar face: Colleen—she was the TA for the course.

“I thought you bailed on this class when you saw I was the teaching assistant.”

David was confused because he had no idea she was the TA until he walked in.

“We’ve worked together before. I just had some other stuff come up, which was why I wasn’t here,” David said.

After she got back together with her ex, David worked with her on the ads for USC and then the soap opera.

“Did you prepare your skit for today?”

Once again, David had no idea what she was talking about, and Colleen could see it. She handed him a sheet of paper with his lines.

“You’re up first, so you better get busy.”

David was once again glad to have done J-dramas because less than five minutes later, he was in front of the room, acting out his scene. Colleen was in the back, shaking her head because he delivered his lines like a pro. David had no doubt she’d hoped he would get flustered and mess up.

When David started acting, memorizing his lines had been his greatest fear, but now, it came naturally.

Toward the end of the class, a girl in the back asked, “Do I need an agent to get into TV, film, and commercials?”

Linzie Poulson, their instructor, said, “Tori, you’re not going to like my answer: yes and no.”

She smiled at Tori and continued, “It’s a complex question, and it depends on the region where you’re a professional actor.

“I would say yes for the mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions, which would cover Maryland, south to Atlanta, and then west to New Orleans. If you want to be considered for any of the professional productions, you should have an agent.

“While it’s not impossible to get a job without an agent by self-submitting, you should know that some casting companies don’t accept self-submissions.”

“If it’s not impossible, why have an agent, then?” David asked to play devil’s advocate. He knew about the other functions that agents performed, but those weren’t relevant to Tori’s question.

“It makes the lives of the people in charge of casting much easier. They can send a potential job out to a handful of agents, who sort through the requirements and send only actors who might fit.

“Now, if you’re going to work here in LA, New York, or Chicago, an agent is a must.

“There are smaller markets where agents don’t exist at all, so you have to self-submit,” Linzie said.

“Are there other reasons to get an agent other than it makes the casting people’s lives easier?” David asked.

“Having an agent helps give the perception that you are a professional actor, and they treat you seriously,” Linzie answered. Then she looked at David and asked, “What’s been your experience getting jobs?”

“My first job was on Star Academy, and I was recommended by an actor who had a role in the movie. She arranged for me to go to a casting call in Chicago. I didn’t get the role I was auditioning for, but they slotted me in to play Stryker.

“For other roles, I knew someone. But for the one I won my Academy Award for, an agent found it for me,” David said.

Once David started to open up, his classmates began asking him questions directly. Linzie let them get it out of their systems and would add her opinion if she felt David hadn’t covered something adequately.

After the class, David went to the front of the room to have a quick word with Ms. Poulson. Colleen joined them.

“Sorry about that; I didn’t mean to take over your class,” David said.

“David has always been helpful in the classes and projects I’ve participated in,” Colleen said.

’She must want something.’

Rain knew David Dawson lived a much different life from hers. That fact was hammered home when he changed the location for working on their class project to a yacht.

He’d explained that his roommate’s father owned it and that it had come free on Saturday so they could use it. She knew USC was loaded with wealthy people, but not all of them owned luxury yachts. Mostly, she heard that they might be invited on one.

David said Rain could invite someone. Since she didn’t have a boyfriend, she was bringing her roommate, Margaret, who was David’s business tutor.

“I have nothing to wear,” Margaret moaned as she flew into Rain’s room.

“I know, right? What do you wear on a yacht?”

“I bet there are a bunch of party hos running around in nothing but thongs.”

“I’m just going to wear shorts and a t-shirt like I do every day. There’s no way I can compete with some anorexic with butt floss,” Rain said.

“Please. At least you have...” Margaret said, clutching her breasts. “I look like a twelve-year-old boy. Plus, David said there would be some single football players there—unlike David and his brother, who you’re lusting after.”

“Shut up!” Rain complained.

“Just saying,” Margaret said with a twinkle in her eye.

Rain knew Margaret also had a crush on David, but she’d seen him with his current girlfriend. The girl was gorgeous, and he only had eyes for her—unless you considered his girlfriend’s roommate, who personified California. She seemed to have David wrapped around her little finger.

“Maybe I’ll put a swimsuit on underneath,” Rain conceded.

“And that cute summer dress instead of shorts and a t-shirt,” Margaret pressed.

“Fine.”

“Now that you have your wardrobe sorted, come and help me pick out what to wear,” Margaret said, grabbing Rain’s hand and pulling her to Margaret’s room.

Bill was put in charge of driving Phil and Jim. Phil had told him he’d invited two girls, Selby and Skylar. Bill knew Selby was one of the jock bunnies who was working her way through the new guys. He’d heard Skylar was her roommate, so he assumed Phil had invited her as a favor.

With Selby going, Bill assumed there might be some extracurricular activities if he wanted to participate. Rumor had it that she would do multiple guys in an evening if they went one at a time, so he brought some condoms, just in case.

Jim came out first and claimed the front seat.

“You know the team’s going to kill us,” Jim said as he put on his seatbelt.
