Apparently, his dick had been learning along with David via his new AI headset because it could now read.
Cammie: ’Come to my place after your last class. We can order in.’
Mr. Happy did a little dance in David’s pants. His newest favorite person wanted to play with him.
Maddie had just gotten home when her phone rang. It was Cammie.
“I f-ed up. I invited David over and ordered food. Can you grab the food and invite him to your place until I get there?”
“I guess,” Maddie said, acting put out.
“You’re the best. I’ll be about an hour late, so both of you go ahead and eat.”
“How much is it?” Maddie asked.
“I already paid. Could you tip the driver?”
“No problem,” Maddie said and hung up.
David was slightly confused when he saw Maddie sitting in the lobby with a pizza box.
“Cammie’s running late, so you’re hanging out with me until she gets home.”
“Okay. I could eat.”
Maddie kept a monologue running as they rode the elevator to their floor. Once they arrived at her place, she pointed him to her kitchen table while she grabbed plates and drinks.
David picked up a slice of pizza and had just taken a bite when Maddie asked, “So ... what dirt do you want to know about Cammie?”
He took a moment to chew his food before asking, “What did she think of me when we first met?”
“She said you looked like the guy she dated when she was eighteen. And that she didn’t know how to spot danger when it was staring her right in the face with your rock-hard abs and chiseled jawline.”
“Danger?”
“She claims you’re some kind of sexual savant.”
“Please share,” David said, smiling.
He started to see why Maddie was Cammie’s best friend. The girl was fun.
“You seemingly had no trouble finding ‘it.’ Once you did, you knew what to do with it.”
“Really. Tell me more,” David said, encouraging Maddie to spill the tea.
“She said you take direction when she gives it, put her pleasure before your own, and check with her throughout to make sure she’s still okay with whatever you’re doing. Which pretty much means that, as far as men are concerned, you’re as rare as a magical unicorn that shoots gold dust out of its ass,” Maddie overshared.
David imagined what trouble Maddie and Cassidy would get into if they met. He decided that should never happen.
Cammie burst into Maddie’s apartment, expecting to see her friend seducing David. Instead, she found them talking on the couch, laughing.
David asked Cammie, “So, you thought that if you swam enough, you’d transform into a mermaid?”
“Don’t let him give you a hard time,” Maddie said. “Make him tell you why his mom said, and I quote: ‘At least she didn’t say you had a pencil dick!’”
“I made a huge mistake letting the two of you talk alone, didn’t I?” Cammie asked.
“It’s all good,” David assured her. “We saved you some pizza.”
“Now that Cammie’s here, tell us how you managed to get five kids,” Maddie said.
“You took sex ed, right?” David asked.
“Yeah, dumbass, I know how babies are made,” Maddie fired back.
Her best friend must have felt comfortable enough with David to give him a hard time, which meant he might be a keeper.
“I guess this conversation was bound to happen,” David said, getting more serious.
While Cammie ate, he told the story of how all his kids came about. He really was the poster child for using condoms. It also highlighted the difference between a model/movie star/sports star’s life and hers. She hated to imagine his body count because he surely didn’t get them all pregnant.
When she finished eating, Cammie asked David, “Do you want to escape the interrogation and go back to my place?”
He stood up and hugged Maddie.
“We should do this again.”
Maddie was all smiles. Cammie couldn’t remember the last time her friend seemed to approve of a guy she was seeing.
David swung by the coaches’ offices because he’d received a text from Bryant. He assumed it had to do with transfers.
Lisa, Coach Harrington’s stepdaughter, was sitting at the front desk, looking off into space. Her job must suck because that was the same look Rachel normally had.
“They left you in charge?” David asked.
“I was told if you showed up, to simply say ‘no’ to anything you ask.”
“I assume Bryant wants me to wait out here and not go right in, right?” David asked.
Rachel appeared and chuckled.
“Rookie mistake,” she said to Lisa. “He’s cleverer than the average jock.”
“Bryant’s in with my stepdad. Go on in,” Lisa said.
David chuckled as Rachel closed her eyes and shook her head. If it had been her at the desk, she would’ve tormented him for at least a few more minutes.
“Just the man we wanted to see,” Bryant said as David walked into Coach Harrington’s office.
“Two things,” Bo said, holding up two fingers. “Washington and Oregon have agreed to move to the Big Ten, and Travis Barry just called. The Chicago Bears signed him.”
Travis had been a backup quarterback when David arrived at USC. He’d transferred to Western Michigan to get a fresh start. David facilitated the move, hoping Travis would shine under Coach Harrington’s tutelage.
“Congratulations,” David said, shaking Bo’s hand.
“The USC tradition continues,” Bryant said.
He loved how Bryant could slant anything to benefit the Trojans’ recruiting. The recruiter would add Travis to the list of former USC quarterbacks who’d made it to the NFL.
“We have a question for you. Before we ask it, let me get Coach Trent and Coach Allen in here,” Bryant said.
David guessed it had to do with a quarterback if Bryant wanted their offensive coordinator and quarterback coach to be involved in the conversation.
He wasn’t surprised when Amy Stackhouse, resident psychologist and special teams coach, joined them.
“I want to hear his answer,” Amy explained as she took a seat.
“Would you rather have John Phillips or Tim Rogers as your backup for the coming year?” Bo asked.
“John’s a possibility?” David asked.
“For this conversation, assume he is,” Mark Trent said.
“John and I are friends. I want to put that out there before I answer.”
“We assume you can provide us with information without clouding the issue with personal bias,” Amy said.
“I’ll do my best,” David said. “John has starting experience at Kentucky. He might be in the NFL already if he hadn’t blown out his Achilles tendon a few years back. He just lost out on the starting job in spring ball, and I was told it was close. John would provide someone you could count on to come in if I were injured.”
“I know Tim from Elite 11, as do Coaches Trent and Allen. Tim has the nickname ‘Cadillac’ because his throwing motion is smooth and effortless. Receivers love catching his balls.
“Talent-wise, Cadillac is the better prospect. He was good enough to be selected to compete at Elite 11, while John was the Gatorade Player of the Year in Kentucky coming out of high school. Cadillac was also beaten out for the starter job at Stanford, which was a mistake on their part.
“For pure football reasons, I would give Cadillac the nod,” David said.
“That’s what I thought,” Mark said.
“I agree,” Tucker Allen added.
“Tell us what you would do with Felix Johnson. Do you see him as a quarterback?” Amy asked.
“It’s ‘Flee,’ as in run away. When he was young, his cousin couldn’t say his name, so he called him Flee, and it stuck,” David shared.
“Good to know,” Bryant said.
“Flee is an athlete. I could see him either playing the slot or switching to defense as a defensive back. On offense, you could use him on some trick plays because he does have an arm,” David said.
“He was good enough to be invited to Elite 11,” Mark said.
“He was, but this is USC,” David said.
“His SPARQ score was just under David’s, and above everyone else’s at Elite 11,” Tucker said. “If he were taller, he would probably have made the final list.”
Amy had a tiny grin when she said, “He’s the same size as Phil Prince.”
“While my brother might not be the athlete Flee is, he’s a better quarterback,” David said seriously.
The coaches chuckled, but none of them disagreed because they knew David was right. Phil had learned his craft under Bud Mason, just as David had. The ex-NFL offensive coordinator had forgotten more football than most coaches knew. While Bo had taught David how to throw a football, Bud had taught him how to prepare and the nuances of being a top-level quarterback.
“I predict that Flee will impact winning. I wouldn’t have suggested him if I thought otherwise,” David said. “Look at Kam Chancellor, Randall Cobb, Julian Edelman, and Anquan Boldin—all of them were quarterbacks in high school.”
“Tell Flee we want him,” Bo said.
“Will do,” Bryant said.
“How goes it? Any commits?” David asked.
“Four so far. They’re putting together their announcements,” Bryant said. “Tim Foresee, Wolf Tams, Max Wilcox, and Ty Wilson.”
“You got Ty?” David asked. When Bryant nodded ‘yes,’ David said, “Hell, yes! I wasn’t sure he would come since he would’ve started at Michigan.”
“It sounded like off-the-field stuff was toxic,” Bryant said.
David and Bo looked at each other and let it go. Mike was the bad egg that finally benefited them instead of being a problem. He’d been bad enough that teammates had chased him to another high school. It was either that, or some of the guys might’ve killed him, David included. It sounded like Mike was up to his old shit at Michigan.
“Sorry, Bryant, I was going to fill you in and forgot. Yes, it was toxic,” Bo said.
“Will he start over Ashton?” Amy asked.
“Absolutely,” David said and then explained. “Ty’s the same size as Ashton but more experienced. He has good hands, and you can trust him with the ball. Ty can also run inside the tackles.
“We used to joke that he has moves like you see when playing Madden NFL, and you bash all the buttons simultaneously. I can’t wait to see our poor linebackers when they’re picking their jocks up off the ground after he does his thing. He’ll make them tackle air as he jets down the field.”
“If that’s the case, we won’t miss a beat when Ashton comes in off the bench,” Mark said.
“They both have home-run abilities. I’d be shitting myself if I were an opposing defensive coordinator, knowing he has to account for those two, along with the receivers we have,” David said.
“We might have to see if we can get them both on the field at the same time,” Mark said.
“If you do, go to a twelve formation with Wolf and Nolan at tight ends,” David said.
A twelve formation was when you had two tight ends, giving you seven blockers.
“Before they start, I need to get to work,” Bryant said.
“I must run to play practice. You all are coming to my ten-minute plays, aren’t you?” David asked.
“Yeah, no. If I have some free time, I’d rather spend it with my wife,” Bo said.
“I’ll call her and explain you need some culture,” David teased.
With that, the meeting ended.
