The spring game was the coming weekend. It would signal the end of spring football practice and the opening of the transfer portal. With the portal in mind, David was in USC’s recruiting coordinator Bryant Franzese’s office. He wasn’t surprised when Head Coach Bo Harrington joined them.
“I hear you’ve been a busy boy,” Bo said as he sat.
“I have,” David admitted, then went through what he felt were positions of need.
“Let’s say we agree with you; who do you suggest we recruit if they enter the portal?” Bo asked.
“Can I be blunt?” David asked.
“When have you ever not been?” Bryant asked.
Bo nodded for David to continue.
“I think it’s obvious that there are players who need to find a better situation. I would guess you’ll have discussions with every player to talk about offseason expectations,” David said.
“We had planned that,” Bo admitted.
“I suggest moving on from two quarterbacks and adding a veteran backup.”
“You don’t think Phil or Jaden can be your backup?” Bryant asked.
“I think Phil will someday start, but national championship teams don’t have freshman quarterbacks. Jaden’s a nice backup, but we can do better,” David said.
“I’m not saying I disagree, but I would like to hear your solution,” Bo said.
“I’ve talked to John Phillips, who’s in a battle for the starting job at Kentucky. If he loses, he might be convinced to join us. This would be his final season, and I think he’d like to go out a winner. As a backup plan, I would suggest Wes Hunt, the backup at Alabama. He’s too good to sit on the bench and has a couple of years of eligibility. He could be your bridge until Colt Macklin is ready,” David said.
Colt was the top recruit in the nation and would come to USC next spring.
“I know you’ve spoken to John; he gave me a call to introduce himself and tell me about his situation. Have you talked to Wes?” Bo asked.
“Not yet, but we know each other well. He was co-MVP with me at Elite 11.”
“If we have two openings...” Bryant said speculatively.
“They would be major upgrades,” Bo finished. “Look into it.”
“Moving on,” David said. “I’d like to bring in some of my former teammates, who all fit into positions of need.”
“We already have three from your high school,” Bryant said.
He had a point. Even the best football high schools wouldn’t have more than three players who could play at USC. Lincoln High was the exception.
“My two best friends are Wolf Tams and Tim Foresee. Wolf is fighting for the starting tight-end job at Oklahoma. He’s got height, speed, and good hands, but they’re deep at his position, and the competition is stiff there. Tim’s a solid inside linebacker and could add depth at that position, if not start,” David said.
“They’re both at Oklahoma?” Bo asked.
“Sorry, yes. We three were supposed to go there, but Oklahoma broke their word to me, so I came here,” David said.
“If they enter the portal, offer them both,” Bo said.
“Will do,” Bryant said.
“I also want to suggest we go after Ty Wilson. He’s in a fight to be either the starter or in the rotation for running back at Michigan,” David said.
Bo chuckled. “Looks like you want to get the whole band back together.”
David shrugged because it was true.
“Why would the starting tailback leave Michigan?” Bryant asked.
“Because their starting quarterback is that Herndon kid,” Bo said with a frown.
David touched his nose. Mike was one of the few people David might punch on sight.
“Sounds like there’s a story there,” Bryant said.
“I’ll tell you later,” Bo said. “Who else?”
“We could use some depth on the offensive line. I know a beast at Michigan, Oliver Williams, who would fit the bill,” David said.
“He was on my list,” Bryant shared.
“Anyone else?” Bo asked.
“I’ve met a lot of people. If you let me know what you’re looking for, I can make some calls,” David offered.
“I appreciate your input,” Bo said. “While they actually have to hit the portal, I can say that we will at least make a call to measure their interest. I can’t promise anything, though, because they have to fit.”
After David left, Bryant was smiling.
“What’s that for?” Bo asked.
“I love that guy. If he ever decided to get into recruiting, I’d be out of a job. I have him talk to all our top targets, and he convinces them to attend USC.”
“Besides being an excellent judge of talent, he’s a leader that people want to play with. That’s why I picked him over Matt Long. Matt’s a tremendous arm talent, but he isn’t even close when it comes to leading a team,” Bo said.
“If we get the guys on his list, do you think it’ll put us over the top?” Bryan asked.
“Maybe. But we will be improved. We need a defensive back or two and possibly another defensive lineman. Losing Clay Wright, Mario Robinson, and Jamal Booker to the NFL hurts, but if we can find the right guys, we can fill those holes.”
“I’ll ask David,” Bryant said with a grin.
“Or you could go find them,” Bo shot back. “But, by all means, ask our real recruiting coordinator.”
“Make fun, but he might also be our head coach.”
“Sometimes I wonder,” Bo said as he got up and left.
David returned to his dorm room.
“You have mail,” Alex said.
It was a fancy envelope. David opened it and found an invitation to his grandmother’s wedding.
“My grandmother’s getting married,” David said.
“To that donor?”
“Yeah, Ron Pennington.”
“Be a very good boy because even I would be happy if I were in his will,” Alex quipped.
David ignored him. The wedding was the weekend after Peggy’s, at the end of May.
He had a random thought and called his mom.
“Do you need bail money?” she asked when she answered.
“Not today, but I have a question. When will my house in Illinois be done?”
He knew it was under construction because he received pictures when major milestones were reached. The last one showed they’d finished framing. Inside, it looked like a skeleton, with wires and pipes running everywhere.
“First of May, if everything goes well.”
“Could Cindy have the interior done by the end of that month?”
“I don’t see why not. Are you planning to go there for a couple of weeks before you start filming that TV series?” his mom asked.
“I might, but I thought I’d offer it to Grandma Dawson and Ron. She might want to return to Illinois, and they could break it in.”
“David!”
“I didn’t mean that. You need to get your mind out of the gutter,” David fired back.
“Says the man running around in a Speedo showing off for a bunch of college girls.”
He mentally counted to ten before asking, “Should I offer or not?”
“I’ll ask her and let you know,” his mom said.
Somehow, he suspected that would be his mom’s wedding gift to his grandmother. He couldn’t complain if she was willing to raise his five.
Margaret, David’s TA and Rain’s roommate, chuckled.
“What’s so funny?” Rain asked.
“Did you see David at the pool?”
Margaret showed Rain the picture, and she sighed. It was obvious Rain’s roommate had a thing for David.
“Margaret, you should’ve seen him at the meet-and-greet. He worked the floor like a congressman trying to get reelected—and all the people he met wanted to vote for him. David was something to see.”
“I can’t believe you haven’t hit that up for a booty call since you’ve been back,” Margaret said.
“You should check out his website: he has about a gazillion pictures of him with some insanely beautiful women. Besides, he made it clear we were just having a vacation fling,” Rain said, then added, “He hasn’t hit me up for one, either.”
“So, you’d be willing if he called?” Margaret asked triumphantly.
“Don’t act smug. You would do him if he called.”
True, but she wanted Rain to be happy. Now, if they could arrange a threesome...
Margaret mentally shook her head to get that idea out of her sex-starved brain, but she did have another question.
“You told me about the two options David gave you for his new NIL business. I know he’s a doer, and he might start other businesses from class projects. Do you think he might be open to me helping with his next one and getting the same kind of deal?” Margaret asked.
“Why don’t you help him with this one? You’re graduating, and working for your dad’s company doesn’t sound ideal.”
“Should I ask him?” Margaret asked.
“Call Caryn Buckley. She’s running everything, and I’m sure you could help out part-time until graduation. It would be a good way to see if you wanted to work there instead of going home,” Rain said.
Margaret’s dad wanted to eventually turn his company over to her. She wanted that, too, but she wasn’t ready to deal with her dad on a daily basis just yet. Having some business experience under her belt would go a long way toward making him see her in a different light. When Margaret worked there on breaks, she became the coffee/lunch-order girl and was never given anything of consequence to do.
“Can you make an introduction?” Margaret asked.
“Will do,” Rain said and dialed Caryn’s number.
David received word that his new helicopter had arrived. He’d hired a mechanic to check it out, and the guy reported that everything was in working order, so David and Cassidy would take a look and then take possession.
Mr. Ullman met them at the heliport. David didn’t recognize it at first because he’d only seen pictures of it when it was pink. Mr. Ullman shared that the previous owner was part of a cosmetic marketing company. Instead of a pink Cadillac, she’d bought herself a helicopter.
The woman about to be divorced hadn’t spared any expense for her soon-to-be ex-husband.
The exterior was gloss black, and inside it had brown leather seats, black carpet, and mahogany trim. David could see flying corporate clients and them being comfortable in the aircraft.
After a quick flight, David closed the deal.
He wanted to try out his new toy, so he flew to a heliport near his house in Malibu, called ahead, and met his parents.
“Take us for a ride, Cassidy,” David said.
David raised everyone’s eyebrows when he climbed into the back with his parents.
He could see Cassidy fidgeting the entire flight there, anxious to get her chance to pilot.
Once they were airborne, David broached a subject he’d been worried about.
“I’m considering dropping out of college after the fall semester.”
His dad placed his hand on his wife’s thigh and said, “Let’s hear him out before we kill him.”
“But we get to kill him if we don’t like what he has to say, right?”
“What do you always say? ‘I brought you into this world, and I can take you out’?” he asked.
“Go ahead, tell us your silly idea,” she said.
“They want to film the Ian Bond movie next spring. Remember in high school when everyone wanted me to drop out and go into acting full-time?” David asked.
“And you made the right decision,” she said.
“I agree, but look at what they’re offering,” David said, handing over the money page of his proposed contract.
Even his mom was at a loss for words, so he powered on.
“I’ll have my degree at the end of the fall semester. After we win the national championship, I can see walking away from football,” David said.
“I thought your goal was to play in the NFL or Major League Baseball,” his dad said.
“I know, but I’ve been bad at kicking the can down the road. At some point, I need to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. I’m leaning toward acting. If that’s the case, I want to figure out what that means.”
“We agreed to take care of your kids until you graduated,” his mom said.
“That’s part of it. But I might need some help while I’m filming.”
“Do you plan to kick us out of the Malibu house?” she asked.
David shook his head ‘no.’
