David had almost reached practice when his phone rang. It was Chip Wagner, a local sports reporter, who had been on his podcast.
“I’m calling to get a comment on today’s news,” Chip said without preamble.
’This can’t be good,’ David thought. “You have me at a disadvantage. I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Let me read you the wire report,” Chip said. “Big Ten chancellors and presidents voted to accept USC and UCLA into their conference. What do you think this means for the Pac-12?”
“Fuck if I know,” David chuckled. “Care to go off the record so we can talk?”
“If I do, will you give me something?” Chip asked.
“Why not?”
“Then let’s talk.”
“Has it even been a year since Texas and Oklahoma jumped to the SEC?” David asked.
“That’s about right.”
“The Big 12 is still standing, so I guess the Pac-12 will do the same ... unless—” David began.
“—Washington and Oregon jump to the Big Ten,” Chip finished.
“This all comes down to money. The Pac-12 has a terrible TV deal, and the Big Ten just negotiated a monster one. If I were running a big-time program in the Pac-12, I would jump just so I had the funds to compete,” David said.
“Can I quote you on that?”
“Heeelll no,” David drawled. “I don’t want to have the fans of the Pac-12 on my back.”
“What do you think this means?” Chip asked.
“This is the first step toward super conferences. Right now, that would be the SEC and Big Ten.”
“Do you think Notre Dame joins the Big Ten?”
“That would make too much sense, but the Golden Domers aren’t that smart. They think they can go it on their own. They’re counting on NBC to keep funding them. But the handwriting is on the wall. They already are part of the ACC for all sports other than football. When the football money dries up, they might come to their senses,” David said.
“How about a quote I can use?” Chip asked.
“From a fan’s perspective, I’m saddened to hear of the change. USC has developed rivalries that people are used to seeing each year. I hope they can develop new ones, but I’ll miss the tradition,” David said.
“That works,” Chip said and hung up on him.
He was moving on to his next victim to interview. David hoped his quote would make it to the cutting room floor. Maybe some dummy would say something that would make them famous for five minutes.
Before practice started, David gathered the team.
“You all know Bear and Cub. I decided we need nicknames for the other starting linemen. I wanted to stick with the ursine theme—for you ignoramuses who didn’t do so well on the SAT, that means ‘bear-related.’” That got him some raspberries and more than a few freeway salutes.
He ignored them and soldiered on.
“Anyway, I decided that Wooga should be Kodiak; it’s a name that fits his size. But after that, I ran out of ideas, so I asked my kids to help, and sure enough, they came up with names.
“So, from this point forward, I propose that Jim be known as Grizzly, and Mykal as Kenai, after the young Inuit warrior who transforms in the cartoon Brother Bear. As time goes on, we may decide others need names as well, but I’ll leave that to another day.”
Wooga, Jim, and Mykal all seemed to take this in stride; none of them objected, anyway. The team looked at him with amusement, as though it were just another crazy thing David did, but he later heard them using the nicknames. It was one more thing that would help bring them together.
David tweaked his hamstring toward the end of practice, so Joey had him on the side of the field. She was doing evil things to him to see if he was really hurt.
The coaches switched to special teams, and David watched Alex line up for a field goal.
“The game is tied. Alex makes it, and the offense wins,” Coach Stackhouse called out.
David was half-paying attention when he heard, Thump! ... Thump! followed by cheers.
“What just happened?” David asked.
Joey chuckled.
“Alex has been bragging that he’s money inside the thirty-five. Coach Stackhouse just proved he isn’t.”
David looked closer. Typically, the backups were in for the end-of-practice stuff. He spotted Bear, Cub, Wooga, and Percy lined up on defense. By the way Percy was dancing around, he must have blocked it.
“Run it again!” Coach Stackhouse barked.
This time, Phil, who was the holder, pulled the ball and tried to run when the line collapsed. Cub reached his big paw out and knocked the ball out of Phil’s hand. It landed at Alex’s feet, who, rather than try to recover the fumble, turned and ran away when the monsters chased after the loose football.
He was smarter than David sometimes gave his roommate credit for. David would’ve done the same thing in practice. There was no need to die.
Coach Stackhouse took pity on the kicking team and sent everyone to the showers.
Ruth was waiting for David when he walked out of the football building. His security showing up was never a good thing.
“What’s up?” David asked.
“Don’t get all grumpy. This’ll put a smile on your face,” Ruth promised.
“Color me intrigued.”
“Cassidy ‘borrowed’ your Demon today,” Ruth said, doing air quotes. “And she got this put on your car.”
Ruth handed him a business card. David looked at it and laughed.
The front said:
Hey Idiot!
You Absolutely SUCK At Parking!
Flip Over For The Reason
The back had a checklist. One and two had been checked.
o Parking Over the Line
o Taking More Than One Spot
o Inventing A Parking Space
o Parked Too Close to Another Car
o Double Parked
o Other:
Comments: I rubbed my nut sack on the door handle.
Next Time, Please Try To Park Normally.
“Does she know you have this?” David asked.
“No, I thought you might want to share it with her,” Ruth said, becoming his favorite security person.
“I think I’ll bank this one away. Did she really park that badly?”
“She was just being careful with your car and parked in two spots in the back of the parking lot. There was plenty of parking for customers,” Ruth shared.
“Does she ‘borrow’ my car a lot?” David asked.
“Cassidy has her own set of keys.”
David had suspected that, but he was still surprised to have his suspicion confirmed. She seemed to have found a workaround for when he returned her Mercedes when the lease expired.
Ruth added, “If she were abusing her privileges, I would’ve told you. So far, it’s been for things like doctor’s appointments or similar stuff.”
David decided he didn’t need to know what the ‘similar stuff’ was.
“Let her keep using it.”
“On another note, your dog walker’s ex-boyfriend has been charged. His lawyer has reached out to the girls and offered an apology if they agree not to testify. The girls told Fritz they just want this to go away and the pictures pulled down.
“Fritz has explained that removing them from the Internet will be almost impossible, but they don’t want to deal with this anymore.
“He wants to know what you want to do,” Ruth said.
“Agree to drop the charges and then have a press release announcing that the charges are being dropped and name him. I think Maurice needs to become famous for being a creeper.”
“I have some surveillance pictures of him,” Ruth said, showing David on her phone.
One showed Maurice going out to get his paper, clad only in his boxers. He had a serious case of bedhead and a three-day-old beard. He looked like the guy you would think of who lived in his mom’s basement and trolled people on the Internet. Paybacks were hell.
“Have Fritz send this to Frank for the press release,” David said.
David mentally noted that Frank, his publicist, would probably want him to do some interviews. He would need to block off some time for those and work on his ‘I’m a good little boy who has been wronged’ face.
David walked into his dorm room to find Alex ranting to Chloe.
“Stupid jerk-faces!”
David gave his roommate a blank look. Sometimes, being an actor was worth it.
“What’s wrong?” David asked innocently.
Chloe saw through him and almost gave David away.
“Bear, Cub, Wooga, and Percy are what’s wrong,” Alex ranted.
David looked at Chloe, so she filled him in.
“They blocked his kick.”
“Are you telling me you’ve never had a kick blocked?” David asked.
“Shut it, Golden Boy.”
“He told everyone that he’s money inside the thirty-five,” Chloe said.
“Why not fifty-five?” David asked.
Alex blinked and then smiled.
“I sold myself too short. I make fifty-five-yarders all the time.”
“That’s my boy,” David said. “Have you eaten?”
“I’m starving,” Alex admitted as he got up.
The three of them headed down to the cafeteria.
They ran into Lindsey and Seamus eating, so they joined them.
“What’s up, Seamus?” David asked when he sat down.
“Just spending time with me mot.”
“How’s baseball going?”
“We could use your bat. Hurry up, finish with that thing you Yanks call football, and help us out,” Seamus said.
“I haven’t touched a bat since last season. You don’t want me on the team.”
“So ... on a non-sports topic,” Chloe said, “how are you two doing?”
Lindsey blushed.
“That good ... huh?” Chloe asked. “Does it have anything to do with his ‘shillelagh’?”
“Seamus has some skills. Don’t sell my boy too short,” David quipped.
“How would you know?” Alex asked.
“Last year, we were both on the baseball team, and he went on a spring break vacation with me,” David shared.
“Did he like girls to do that thing?” Lindsey asked.
David played along.
“I know, right? Even I was a little shocked when I heard about that.”
“You might recall we had a deal, yeah?” Seamus asked.
David became solemn and said, “What happens on a road trip stays on a road trip.”
“We have the same deal,” Alex said.
Chloe slugged his roommate in the arm. Alex was not having a good day.
David was meeting with Coaches Harrington, Trent, and Allen about the offense when Alan stuck his head in the door. David still reacted negatively when he saw his ex-BFF.
“I have some good news: that AI stuff is paying off,” Alan said.
