David was wrapping things up before spring break began. He’d brought boxes of Cream Pies that Lexi had ordered to his Data Science for Business class. As he handed them out, he got a few moans of disappointment and more than a few wisecracks. When David gave one to Professor Stratton, she thanked him and said she was pleased to see he followed through on his commitment. He recalled the lunchtime conversation with his dorm-mates about her, making him smile; she really wasn’t so bad.
He’d also delivered his incorporation papers to Professor Dugan. While most groups were supposed to create paperwork for pseudo-companies, David decided to make it real, naming his company Endeavor NIL Collective.
Caryn had approached him and suggested that he consider setting up the company in Wyoming instead of Delaware.
“But we set up David A. Dawson Inc. in Delaware. Why would we change?” David asked.
“They were the go-to place for companies to incorporate. It’s a small state of about a million people and derives more than one-third of its state budget from corporate legal fees. However, blue-chip companies like Walmart and others are in the process of changing their legal designation away from the state.
“I just read that Meta, the parent company that owns social media giant Facebook, is moving its filing to Texas,” Caryn said. “With the Elon Musk compensation dustup, he’s pulling Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink. It’s all because of the uncertainty of the state’s long-held position as a neutral corporate arbiter. That no longer stands; the state is now looked at as anti-business because of the litigation risks.”
David knew Elon Musk was a lightning rod in terms of public opinion. When it came to light that he’d met the goals for a hundred-billion-dollar pay package, it seemed egregious at first blush. That was why some shareholders sued him and had the payout blocked.
But Musk had disclosed his potential bonus package in corporate filings well in advance. It was based on ungodly high growth metric thresholds. When David first read about them, he’d scoffed at the audacity of how high Musk had set the bar. The truth was, he’d taken Tesla from a fifty-billion-dollar company to a trillion-dollar valuation at its peak, which triggered the potential payout.
If David had been a shareholder, and the guy in charge had made him that much money, he’d probably have been okay giving the guy a ten percent bonus. That was especially so since he’d agreed to the deal upfront. However, the courts ruled it was too much, which was terrible optics because the board of directors could appear to be his friends. David recognized his board might come under similar scrutiny because he trusted them for a reason: they were either related to him, or he’d built a friendship with each one.
“Litigation risks? I don’t like lawyers,” David agreed. “Where should we get it done?”
“Either Nevada or Wyoming. Both are management-friendly in that their laws are such that you actually have to do something criminal for board members to be sued. Wyoming might be the best choice because it is known for its combination of strong anonymity, asset protection, and affordability.”
Ultimately, David left it up to Caryn to decide between the two, and she’d picked Wyoming.
David drove to Malibu on Saturday morning to begin spring break. Cassidy and Tracy had flown out the previous night with Alex and Chloe to spend the week on the Sandovals’ yacht in the Mediterranean Sea. Cassidy had arranged for them to be met at the airport by Geoffrey McGowen, who’d played Q in David’s James Bond movie, and who they’d met at Zac’s party.
Pam had decided to spend her vacation with her mom in Illinois.
On his last trip to Whistler, David had invited Tami, Wolf, and Tim to join him, but this year, their spring breaks were the next week. The three of them planned to go home to Illinois for the break.
His parents, who were walking out with their luggage, met him at the back door.
“Where are you two going?” David asked.
“Lexi booked us a trip to Hawaii for the week. It’ll give us a chance to relax and spend some alone time together,” his dad said.
David held out his hand to his mom.
“Give me your phone and tablet,” David ordered.
His mom narrowed her eyes but did as he said; his dummy dad got caught grinning at the sight. David knew his mom would never give up her devices unless she were sure Lexi could hold down the fort while she was gone. His former PA had convinced his mother that she could handle things for a week. He just prayed Lexi didn’t run off all the agents before his mom returned.
David walked into chaos in the kids’ playroom. There were open suitcases as his little ones busily tried to figure out what they couldn’t live without for the coming week. For three-year-olds, it was mainly toys.
He was impressed when he saw all of them, but Dawson had packed their AI headsets. David had heard that the game had all the kids addicted. He went over to Dawson and quietly asked, “Don’t you want your AI stuff?”
Dawson’s eyes got big, and he ran to his room to retrieve it. There would have been hell to pay if the others had their games, and he didn’t.
David wasn’t too worried about what the kids packed because he could always buy whatever they needed. He’d arranged to rent snow gear for the week. He didn’t buy it because after the trip, they wouldn’t need it again until they returned, and by then, it wouldn’t fit.
David also had Dare send him three more AI headsets for Greg’s kids. For once, his little ones would have an advantage over their older cousins, and they could teach them how to use them.
Ruth came in with Mrs. Nguyen, who ran the daycare, and her daughter, Linh. They’d agreed to come along and help Sara watch the kids. David had rented the unit next to theirs for all the ‘help’ and security he was bringing with him.
He thought the chaos was complete when Greg and his family arrived, but then Karen, Duke and Duchess’s dog walker, showed up. She wanted a word with him before he left.
“What’s up?” David asked as they sat down in the kitchen, away from everyone getting his kids ready to leave.
“There’s no good way to say this, but I think I know who’s posting all those pictures,” Karen said.
David interrupted her by holding up a finger as he pulled out his phone and dialed Fritz.
“Don’t tell me Ruth bailed, and I have to send Manaia on your trip,” Fritz said.
“I have one better: someone knows who’s posting my doctored photos on the net,” David said.
He introduced the two of them, and Karen said she thought it was her ex. When David first called her and her boyfriend answered the phone, David acted like he thought Karen was a kinky escort who would treat him like a pet. At the time, he thought it was hilarious when the guy wasn’t amused that David wanted her to walk him and rub his tummy. It seemed Karen’s ex held a grudge.
Kyle came bounding up the stairs and yelled, “The bus is here!”
“Tell your dad I’ll be down in a minute, and go ahead and load everyone up,” David said.
His nephew tore down the stairs, two at a time. It reminded David of himself when he was younger, and his mom would yell at him about running down the stairs. It wouldn’t be long before his five were doing the same.
After David had Karen call Fritz using her own phone so he could get his back, he found Rain standing by the back door, looking shell-shocked.
“I knew there were eight of them, but to experience it live and in person ... Do all Dawson men breed like feral cats?”
“To be fair, two are adopted.”
Rain shook her head and grumbled something about needing a drink. Before the day was out, he would probably need one, too.
David had chartered a larger jet for the trip to Canada. It had plenty of seats for everyone, but also an open section usually used for in-flight parties. He planned to use it as a play area for the kids, who would likely get bored if they sat too long.
Once they got into the air, Mrs. Nguyen gathered all the little ones, and they had story time.
David was scrolling through his text messages and social media. Tracy had posted pictures of her trip to the Mediterranean. He was amused when he saw Cassidy in a dress; she looked good on Geoff’s arm. Alex and Chloe stood next to them. The caption read, ‘Feeling like a fifth wheel.’
“It looks like they’re having fun,” Rain said as she sat beside him.
“They’re going to spend a week on Alex’s yacht, sailing to different ports, soaking up the sun, and drinking lots of sangria. I would think they’ll have a good time.”
“Will we have a chance for some adult fun this week?” Rain asked.
He knew what she meant: would they do stuff other than kid-friendly activities?
“Whistler is the Vegas of the north, so what happens in...” David said, waggling his eyebrows as he trailed off.
Rain’s mouth fell open in shock.
“David Dawson, you dirty boy. I’ve never heard you be anything but professional when I was around you.”
“How do you think I got so many children?” David asked.
“Are you hitting on me?” Rain asked.
“Would it be so terrible if I were?”
“I uhm ... I uhm...” Rain stammered.
“I’m just putting it out there that I wouldn’t be opposed to some Vegas-style fun if you were so inclined.”
Rain wrung her hands before saying, “This just caught me by surprise. I never thought you were interested.”
David chuckled.
“Have you ever met a straight guy who wasn’t interested in you?”
Rain bit her lower lip.
“You, for one.”
“That was because we were in a businesslike setting, which wouldn’t have been appropriate. We’re now on vacation, and I figured I’d say I am very interested.”
“Oh,” Rain said after a moment.
“Just so we’re clear, if you’re not interested or want to keep your options open for the week, you don’t have to move into my bedroom. But we could have a lot of fun if you did.”
Across the aisle, Ruth snorted, trying not to laugh. David gave her the stink eye before putting on his innocent face and looking into Rain’s eyes.
Rain finally saw the humor in his offer and chuckled.
“I might if you’re willing to sleep in the wet spot.”
Ruth couldn’t help herself and chuckled before saying, “If he gets to the point where there’s a wet spot, you won’t care if you sleep in it.”
“Have you two...?” Rain asked, looking back and forth at David and Ruth.
David raised an eyebrow, and Ruth shrugged.
“I’ll never tell. David told me Dubai was like Vegas,” Ruth said.
The two girls giggled.
“I think I’d better go check on the kids,” David said.
He got up to go to the back, and halfway down the aisle, he looked behind him and caught the two women checking him out.
He’d planted the seed; all he had to do was wait and see if it took root.
Alex had set his phone to wake him up first thing. The time change was a real bitch, and he wanted to get acclimated as quickly as possible. He found coffee ready in the galley, so he poured himself a cup, walked out to the back deck to take in the morning, and froze.
