Chapter 23

Young Adult Sex Story: Chapter 23 - A Better Man follows the talented David Dawson, who is brimming with charm, a messed-up love life, and many lessons that go far beyond the playbook. He’s setting the stage for winning the ultimate prize: a national championship. David is pulling out all the stops in his campaign, working his network to build a juggernaut while dealing with business calamities, completing his education, and navigating minefields in his love life.

David was pissed. He’d heard through the grapevine that Wooga was moving to defense. He’d dreamed of the big man crushing defensive players, but the film didn’t lie: Wooga couldn’t pass-block. Yes, that was a deal-breaker, but David felt Wooga had the talent to do the job and just needed to learn how. Maybe Mykal Hansen would step up and fill that role.

This would be Wooga’s first day on the wrong side of the ball. Coach Hurst was thinking about changing his defense to use a nose tackle.

David grudgingly admitted that it made sense with someone of Wooga’s size. He could clog the middle on running plays and, on passing plays, help collapse the pocket, preventing the quarterback from stepping up to avoid the pass rush. With his albatross-like wingspan, the likelihood of a deflection would increase.

In the latter half of practice, Wooga lined up across from Jim. David was focused on timing issues he was having with a progression that Coach Trent had developed. He’d done something similar when David went to the Elite 11 camp. Usually, a quarterback would look at their primary receiver, and if they were covered, he would go to his secondary and so forth. If it usually flowed across the field, it could be done quickly.

Coach Trent wanted this play run so it was more herky-jerky. David’s eyes were bouncing back and forth to find the open receiver. What it did was confuse the heck out of the defense, because they were used to the smooth flow, not this. The hope was that once David’s eyes left an area of the field, they would let up because they knew the ball wasn’t going in that direction.

So when Wooga was inserted, David didn’t think anything of it. That was until the giant of a man scooped Jim up and tossed him at David. David looked down at Jim, who was staring back up at him with the same ‘What the fuck?!’ expression David had.

Jim was a six-six, three-hundred-plus-pound college athlete. Players didn’t pick him up and toss him almost nine feet. Thankfully, Wooga hadn’t learned what to do after he threw the center, namely, run full tilt at the quarterback and kill him. It reminded David of the film he’d seen of Percy Wilkes before Lincoln High played Broadview Academy, where he would simply engulf a quarterback and slam him to the turf.

David lobbed the ball to Wooga and said, “Take that and run for a touchdown. You deserve it.”

Then he bent down and helped his friend to his feet.

“Did that just happen?” Jim asked.

“Yep. You might want to check your pants because I would’ve shit mine if that was done to me,” David quipped.

“Thank God he didn’t decide to stomp me, too,” Jim said.

To think, Wooga hadn’t been playing football for long and had only limited instruction to that point. David decided to get over his mad about Wooga’s position change.

Caryn met with Greg, Rain, and Professor Dugan to get as much information as she could about David’s NIL venture. The business plan was almost complete, and the steps needed to make NIL work at a university had been identified. She wanted to talk to them before she talked to David to see if she could spot any holes in his ideas.

“The key is to get the university’s buy-in. While they won’t be involved in running the company, they are a crucial partner. You need their endorsement, a list of current donors to the athletic department, and an idea of who they want as stakeholders,” Greg said.

“The best case would be to hire someone either within the athletic department or connected to it to be the face of the franchise,” Rain said.

“It would also help to have key boosters accept the company,” Professor Dugan said.

“I wondered why David invited Ron and Gabe. They’re major USC boosters,” Caryn said.

From there, they got into the weeds to understand how this would work. After the meeting, she felt confident enough to begin talking to the other members of the David A. Dawson Inc. board and see what they thought.

Caryn also wanted to talk to David and figure out why he’d invited Tom Dole, an entertainment attorney, to the kickoff meeting. Unfortunately, she doubted she’d have a chance to do so before the meeting.

Finally, she wanted to hire some staff. It was obvious that David and his group were all students and didn’t have the time to start a company, and it required workers to get it off the ground. She needed people who knew how a business functioned to lay the foundation, from banking to HR to everything else. David had talked about getting his agent involved, but she didn’t see that he had the skill set she needed.

After the meeting, she called Megan, who handled stuff like background checks, accounting, and so on for David back in Illinois.

“Book yourself a flight. I need you in LA.”

Rain could see that David’s business idea was really going to happen. She had been on the fence about her options. Should she accept a one-time payout and walk away once the class project was over, or should she take a risk and get a piece of the company? Rain had heard everything Professor Dugan had said about David’s successful track record, but...

The problem she had was that she needed money now. Attending USC was expensive. While her parents paid her tuition and books, she’d tried to cover the cost of her apartment and all that entailed to help take some of the load off them. Rent in LA was insane, and her bank account was quickly dwindling. That was why she’d asked Greg if David might be willing to give her some cash upfront and maybe take a smaller ownership interest.

She saw that David wasn’t looking to get rich doing this. She understood his real motivation was the potential he could earn from his involvement with HWM. But the projected numbers were nothing to sneeze at, either. She could be set for life on her small percentage if this were to hit the upper end of the projected potential.

The worst case would be that she would never earn a dime, but that was the nature of a startup. At least she wasn’t on the hook for real money like David was. If she’d learned anything from hanging out with him, it was that David won most of his business bets.

Greg did share that David had taken a hit on a football software venture. What she garnered from that story was that David had pulled the plug when he found it wouldn’t be a money-maker.

She decided that before committing one way or another, she would talk to David.

Faith, Dare’s girlfriend and partner in his AI teaching project, had been in David’s ear, complaining he hadn’t done the voice work yet. The problem wasn’t doing it; it was finding the right woman’s voice. He’d debated hiring a professional actress, but couldn’t get past what someone like that would cost.

He’d complained about it to Cassidy, and she’d had a genius idea: why didn’t he hire a USC student?

That was why he was at the Alpha Mu house. When he knocked, he was happy to see Emily answer. While they lived in the same dorm, their paths had never crossed this semester, and he missed her.

“I hope you’re not here to see Wren because she can’t stop talking about you two hooking up.”

“Good to know, I guess, but I’m actually here to see Tori.”

Emily frowned.

“She’s going through a rough time right now. I don’t think she needs the drama you attract.”

Wren did receive her fifteen minutes of fame when the pictures of David dancing in his underwear with her at Zac’s party hit the tabloids.

“It’s nothing like that. I have an acting job for her I want to pitch,” David said.

“If that’s all it is...”

David nodded.

“Stay right here. I don’t trust you running loose inside the house,” Emily said and shut the door in his face.

She was probably right. David didn’t need to get distracted by cute sorority girls flirting with him, especially now that he was single.

The door cracked open, and Tori looked at him curiously. Behind her were probably ten pledges, trying to eavesdrop on their conversation.

“Do you want a low-paying acting job that will take you an afternoon?” David asked, getting right to the point.

“Sure.”

David handed her the ‘script’ with a note about when and where, and turned to leave.

“Hang on. What exactly is this?” Tori asked.

“It’s a voice-acting job. You show up and read the script,” David said.

She closed her eyes and took a couple of deep breaths. David decided to tease her.

“There is only partial nudity involved.”

“I take it you’ll be reading with me?”

“I promise to keep my clothes on.”

“Good to know,” Tori said.

“See you at the reading.”

This time, he did walk away. He gave it a ninety percent chance that she would show up.

Tom Dole had used the trip to LA to reconnect with his daughter. It had been a couple of months since she’d come home for Christmas. They were on the roof of the townhouse, enjoying the LA weather.

“So, you and David,” Tom said.

“ ... are none of your business,” Tracy said.

“I’m not asking for me; your mother wants to know.”

“We gave it another try but decided we were better as friends.”

“I’m sure there’s more to it than that,” Tom said. “Did you blow it up like last time?”

“For your information, David pulled the plug.”

Her dad gave her a skeptical look. She was surprised that her hooking up with Rory hadn’t hit the tabloids. David had done her a huge favor by sucking all the air out of the room when he decided to dance in his underwear. Tracy changed the topic.

“Why are you here?”

“David’s Name, Image and Likeness project. I’m still on his board of directors, and he asked for our help with his new business. I’ve been tasked with writing contracts for the players. He wants a base contract for the players and NIL company to sign, and then plug-and-play sections that can be added as needed.”

“Like what?” Tracy asked.

“Basic stuff. An example would be a player backing out of his or her commitment mid-season. What money is owed or must be returned? Then there is the contract the donors sign that’ll lock them into making the payments to the NIL, and what happens if they back out. The last thing a school wants is for a player to be promised money and then have it not be delivered.

“My guess is that most schools will want the NIL to collect the money upfront and put it into an escrow account to guarantee the funds are there. You don’t want to be the university that backs out of an NIL commitment. When word of that gets out, you’ll have a hard time convincing players they’ll get paid if they go to that school.

“Stuff like that,” Tom said.

“Do you get paid for each contract?” Tracy asked.

Tom gave her a wry smile.

“David was smart enough to give me a percentage of the company in exchange for legal work. That way, I can’t bleed him dry.”

Tracy acted shocked. They always joked about what a shark her dad was, even though they both knew it wasn’t true.

“I heard a rumor that David is selling his interest in the restaurants to Granny and Mom.”

“That’s a done deal. They’re busy franchising them. They’ve already sold two, one in Peoria and another in Springfield,” Tom said.

“David must have given them a sweetheart deal,” Tracy said.

Tom rolled his eyes.

“Why do you think I agreed to write all those contracts and cut myself out of making money on each one?”
