David had finished his classes for the week and had time before practice, so he went to the McClintock Building. It had a theater space known as the McClintock Theatre and a state-of-the-art voice-over studio. He’d agreed to watch the ten-minute plays and decide whether he would act in any of them.

Kathy Bickford, the girl who’d gotten him to agree to all this, saw him when he walked in. She rushed over, saying, “You came!”

“I did, but I don’t have a lot of time. Could we get started?” David asked.

“Of course. We haven’t worked out the stage work yet, so we’ll read through them today.”

David sat in the middle as chairs were set up on stage for the actors. He wasn’t surprised when Colleen sat down on one side of him and Professor Blum on the other. A moment later, Dr. Scott, the head of Media Arts, joined them.

“We’re almost ready,” Kathy called out, looking nervous.

She looked toward the back of the theater and relaxed. David turned around and saw Rory Walsh and Bec Carson, Zak Verwood’s girlfriend, walking down the aisle.

“Okay, what’s going on?” David asked Dr. Scott.

Rory came up and stood in front of David.

“It’s my fault. Bec told me how USC was involved in filming your adult soap opera, The Young and The Wild. Since you’re a student here, they told me you would receive extra credit hours if we could use some of their talent to film Planner.”

“Planner?” David asked.

Rory smiled.

“The studio renamed it because there’s already another Alex story about a British boy who’s a spy. To avoid confusing the two, they came up with the new name,” Rory said.

He’d heard worse names from studio execs. This one, he could live with.

“So, what are you really doing here?” David asked.

“We heard you’re doing several ten-minute plays and wanted to see if you can still act,” Bec quipped.

“Tell me she’s not in your show,” David said quietly, leaning into Rory. “I can get you much better talent.”

“I can hear you,” Bec said, “and if you don’t behave, I’ll call Zak and cancel your party tonight.”

“We wouldn’t want that,” Rory said.

Someone had weaseled an invite.

“Couldn’t have that,” David grudgingly admitted, “but I’m keeping an eye on you.”

Bec rolled her eyes. He was sure she’d seen it all, living with Zak, so his faux-intimidating look had zero effect.

“Let’s get this started,” Professor Blum called out. “Who’s up first?”

David watched a few thoroughly average plays to start; their quality had a lot to do with the actors.

“Stop!” Dr. Scott called out. “I want all the actors to join me on stage.”

He spent fifteen minutes giving them tips on how to improve their craft. David had heard much of it in his first university acting class when he was in high school. He’d been taught many methods and tricks, from how to project his voice to how to kiss on screen. The main thing lacking was any emotion. Dr. Scott asked David and Bec to come on stage, and they read through the last play they’d seen, which was a two-person presentation.

Bec reading it cold was a thousand times better than the young girl who’d just read. David played off her, and they put life into the play.

“Okay, let’s see the next one,” David said as he took his seat.

He smiled when he saw Tori—the new Alpha Mu pledge and his personal stalker—take a seat. Mr. Happy stretched because she’d promised to handle his package.

Tori’s play had his full attention, not only because she delivered the best acting so far, but because it was well-written and witty.

David clapped to show his approval of the performance. Tori got up and stepped in front of David.

“I hear you’re taking people to a Hollywood party. It would be rude not to invite your classmates.”

David looked over at Bec, and she nodded, indicating she would clear it with Zak.

“Let me arrange transportation. Zak Verwood lives in a gated community, and the guards would never allow all of you to just show up. You also have to be on your best behavior,” David said.

“Says the man who went skinny-dipping at one of our parties,” Bec said.

“Zak wouldn’t miss her too much, would he?” David wondered.

“No need to bring a swimsuit,” Tori teased.

“I was all over the tabloids after that. Keep that in mind,” David warned.

He could see the college kids were no longer focused on presenting their plays, so David bowed out. He called Lexi to get more buses. If David was going to bring that many people, he might as well invite the entire football team. David also planned to invite all the team managers and other student support staff. Oh, and he remembered Greg threatening him for not inviting him to the last one of these, so he messaged his brother.

He would bet his firstborn that Lexi would show up to help ‘organize’ everything. If she did that, he didn’t mind her inviting herself.

She’d helped him out with his mom’s real estate issues when she got carjacked. Lexi shared that his mom was no longer grumbling at her. David didn’t tell her that meant his mom approved of the job she was doing.

David huddled up with his teammates. They were running the number-one offense against their counterparts on defense. He was glad that they’d inserted Wooga at left guard. With Bear and Wooga watching his backside, he would be comfortable dropping back to pass.

“Look, the defense is still butthurt that we kicked their ass in the passing drills, so they’ll be coming for us today. We’re going to run a simple dive to the left, and I expect to see Bear and Wooga pancake their defenders. I want Chewy to have a hole big enough to drive a bus through.

“On one,” David said.

David got into the shotgun and looked out over the defense.

“Hey, Coach Hurst!” David called out to get the defensive coordinator’s attention. “You might want to change your alignment. We’re running dive left on one. I know you need every advantage to keep up with the offense.”

“You’re a dick,” Chewy mumbled.

He could see why Chewy said that because it wasn’t David’s body that would take the pounding if they tackled Chewy.

“It’s on!” Todd, their five-star linebacker, yelled.

Plenty of other comments might have triggered David if he weren’t having so much fun.

“Down! Set! Hut!” David called out as he clapped his hands.

Jim snapped him the football, and Wooga and Bear fired off the line as David was turning to hand it off to Chewy. The crack of the pads told David someone had been walloped. Percy, who’d ended up the sixth-best recruit nationally in David’s class, got his dick planted in the dirt when Bear mauled him.

Wooga wasn’t going to be outdone. Two linebackers filled the hole, only to find a freight train approaching them. When you see someone as massive as Wooga coming toward you, your lizard brain kicks in and tries to save your ass. Wooga didn’t give them a chance to dodge—he was a lot faster than David had even realized. David winced when he saw Wooga simply run them over.

Chewy followed the big guy upfield. Last year, he would’ve juked and sprinted to daylight as soon as he thought he had an opening. David was impressed that he tucked in behind Wooga and let him lead the way. Once they were in the secondary, Chewy saw the right side was open, so he made his move.

The whistle blew to kill the play. The offense trotted back with big smiles. They all loved dominating their defense.

Coach Harrington trotted out and joined the huddle.

“No more tipping your hand. I want the defense to read and react.”

“Yes, sir,” David said.

The next play was a pass. David dropped back and heard, “RED!”

That was the signal that someone had been beaten, and he was about to get drilled. David just went down as Todd ran past him and slapped his helmet.

The next three plays were passes, each ending with David running for his life. It looked like Wooga couldn’t pass-block, so Coach Bolton substituted Mykal Hansen. He’d been their third-string left tackle the previous year before a knee injury caused him to miss the entire fall season. Moving from left tackle to guard wasn’t always easy, but David trusted Coach Bolton’s decision. He’d been working with the backups to find potential starters for the offensive line. Mykal would get his shot with the first team.

During practice, Mykal made some mistakes, but not so bad that David feared for his life. He couldn’t wait to review the tape to determine what had gone wrong with Wooga. David had had high hopes, with the way Wooga blocked the run.

David was already working on nicknames for each lineman revolving around Bear and Cub. For Wooga, he’d been leaning toward Kodiak but was still toying with Grizzly.

At the end of practice, Coach Harrington gave his closing remarks about the first week of spring ball.

“I’ve seen a lot of progress this week as we played mainly backups. Today, I wanted to see where we were with the first-teamers, and it’s clear we have a long way to go before we’re ready for the season. Vince Lombardi, the Hall of Fame coach for the Green Bay Packers, said, ‘Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can obtain excellence.’

“Now, take a few days off and catch up with school, blow off some steam, and be ready on Monday,” Coach Harrington said.

“Speaking of which, the offense won a trip to a Hollywood party tonight because they dominated the defense earlier in the week.”

There were mixed reactions, depending on what position they played. David held up his hand to slow the disparaging remarks being hurled his way by the defense.

“But since then, the defense has stepped up its game, so buses will be at the football dorm at seven to take all of us to the party. The entire team and all the student support staff can spend some time this evening checking out starlets,” David said.

Seeing college boys bounce around like Coby when David made the mistake of letting him have a Coke worried him about how rowdy they would get tonight. Then again, Zak’s parties tended to get out of hand anyway. David was sure Zak had seen something like this before.

David hadn’t paid much attention to who all got on the other buses. Tori must have invited some of her sorority sisters because he saw Crystal, Taylor, and Wren. Alex had slipped in his girlfriend, Chloe, and she’d brought her roommate, Yong. What concerned him was that Chloe was talking to all of them. Alex burst out laughing when they all turned to look over at David.

If Tori hadn’t shared that he was now single, Chloe just did. Mr. Happy was confused when David quickly walked away. These were some of his favorite people, and Tori was a possible new friend he wanted to get to know.

David spotted Greg in the kitchen, snacking on something. Zak usually put out trays of party food, and this time was no exception.

“Did you bring Joey?” David asked.

“And Rain. They went to get something to drink and to see what celebrities are here. I think Alex’s girlfriend is stirring the pot: she told Rain that you were single when she picked up the coffee.”

David must have stared off into space because Greg snorted and said, “Imagining your favorite porn fantasy with our project team member?”

David raised an eyebrow. “And you weren’t?”

“I’m allowed fantasies; Joey told me so. She draws the line at actually touching,” Greg said.

“Good to hear you worked that out.”

“Food!” Phil called out.

That caught several of the football players’ attention. David grabbed another appetizer before they were all gone.

David went out back and saw that the party was packed. It was awfully early for something like this; people in LA normally liked to be fashionably late. He spotted several people he’d worked with in films and TV. He was about to go to the bar when Cassidy found him.

“What are you doing here?” David asked.

“Nice to see you, too.”

“You know what I mean.”

Cassidy shrugged and said, “Galen had a date, so Fritz asked if I could look after you and Alex.”

“Where is Alex?” David asked.

Cassidy shrugged again. He was glad to see that she was on the job. They were joined by Pam and Tracy, two more people David hadn’t invited. He fleetingly wondered how they’d gotten past the gate guard, but decided he didn’t want to know.

“Ladies.”

“David,” Tracy said, acting all shy like Pam did when she wanted something.
