On Sunday, his dad and Lexi called ‘not it,’ so David had to tell his mom what he’d done: rented an office and found her new agents. He was sure the trauma of being carjacked must have clouded her mind because she simply nodded.
Being the smart one in the family, he said goodbye to his kids and left for campus.
On his ride home, David realized he’d needed a weekend away from school. His mom was in much better spirits and had agreed to let Fritz have someone drive her and be at her side when she was in public. But his dad was a little miffed when David also got him a driver.
The entire episode drove home that living in LA wasn’t as safe as it used to be. David began to see the appeal of raising his kids in a place like where he’d grown up. Somewhere you didn’t have to lock your doors or worry someone might snatch your kids. He couldn’t see letting his kids walk or ride their bikes to school in Malibu, something he never thought twice about growing up.
David put those thoughts away as he exited the freeway. He had an appointment with his chiropractor, so he swung by the football building before going to his dorm. David went to the locker room and found his gear for spring practice in his locker. He noticed his VICIS helmet had been replaced with a Riddell SpeedFlex.
When he was in high school, Tami researched which helmet was best to prevent concussions. He’d bought VICIS and worn their brand ever since. He spotted Harvey ‘Harv’ Myers, the head equipment manager, and gave him the helmet.
“I see you changed what I normally wear.”
“Coach Harrington found a study that showed that over seventy-five percent of NFL quarterbacks wear this helmet compared to less than ten percent having the VICIS. The other helmet worn by NFL quarterbacks is made by Schutt. He asked me to look into which provided the most protection.
“A few years ago, it was VICIS, but Riddell has upped their game. Virginia Tech did a study and gave the Riddell SpeedFlex a five-star rating.
“Coach Harrington made it clear he wanted what I thought was best. But if you want your VICIS or even to try the Schutt, he said to get it for you,” Harv said.
“How about you get the Schutt, and I give all three of them a try over spring ball? That is, if you think they’re all safe,” David said.
“They’re all top-rated, so there isn’t much difference in how they’ll perform. I’ll get the Schutt, and we can see which works best,” Harv said. “Coach Harrington also asked me to get more of the Range Sports under armor for some players to try. I checked out your gear and think it might be something we want everyone to wear.”
David gave him Devin Range’s contact information. He imagined Devin wouldn’t mind Harv calling him directly if USC bought a couple hundred units. Knowing Devin, he might donate it if he could say he was the official USC sponsor for that gear.
David knew that USC was a Nike school, so he wasn’t sure what they allowed. He remembered being told it was just gear like jerseys and pants, but wasn’t certain that was still the case. He would let the athletic department work that out.
David had to go get his bones cracked. All this was in preparation for starting spring ball the next day, which would be the first step toward becoming national champions.
On Monday, David’s first class was Marketing Management with Crystal. They gave a presentation on Friday; it was the best-presented report because both of them were comfortable speaking in public. David wasn’t as sure about the content, but at least they didn’t put the class to sleep.
The first thing, the TA handed out their grades, and Crystal frowned. David knew that couldn’t be good. She handed it to him, and it said, ’Come see me.’
“Did you plagiarize something?” David quipped.
“You know I didn’t. I can’t figure out what he wants.”
David shrugged. He guessed they would’ve been called in directly if it were a real issue, not by a note on an assignment.
“I have half an hour before practice, and I think he has office hours at that time. Can you make it then?” David asked.
“I have some sorority stuff, but I’ll let Taylor handle it.”
David cringed, prompting Crystal to give him a wan smile.
“She’ll probably not cause an international incident,” Crystal admitted. “Speaking of incidents, what’s going on with Nude Gate?”
“Pictures keep popping up. I now have acne on my ass, but my public relations team has them taken down as soon as they find them,” David said.
“Taylor is pissed that she isn’t in any of the pictures.”
“For whatever reason, the culprit has painted the girls in a nice light. I know they’re not happy about nude pictures being passed around, but none of them have said they look bad,” David said.
“I bet your pervy roommate uses them as spank material.”
“Alex has a wide variety of premium material; there’s no need for my stuff to make his rotation. Besides, he likes videos much better, if what I hear coming from his room is any indication,” David overshared.
“You might recall that I was there on many mornings,” Crystal reminded him.
“I guess you were at that,” David admitted.
“Okay, I’ll see you before your practice and pray for the best, that Taylor is up to the task.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
His second class was Data Science for Business, taught by Jamie’s mom, Julia Stratton. He usually sat with Crystal and Alyssa; Alyssa had written the software his mom used to make all her money. When she saw him, she gave him a big hug.
“What’s that for?” David asked. “Not that I mind; I just want to be on the same page.”
“Lexi called me and said you approved a lump sum payment and ongoing payments for the real estate stuff. With that money, I won’t have to go deeper into debt,” Alyssa said, referring to her student loans.
Many college kids found themselves in deep debt after college because it had become so expensive. USC was on the high side of what tuition ran. David was glad he didn’t have to pay for it because of football, even though he had the money.
“And I want to thank you for introducing me to Dare. He’s asked me to come to Cambridge for the summer to work on his educational project and a few others. He’s a smart guy, and I like his girlfriend, Faith. She’s the organized one,” Alyssa said.
“She’s into Cream Pies, which I introduced her to,” David said proudly. “Ask Dare about it next time you talk.”
The ‘Cream Pie’ comment had several people suddenly eavesdropping.
“She told me about that. I wondered why you never offered me one,” Alyssa quipped.
“Yes, David, shouldn’t all the girls in this class get Cream Pies? Maybe some of the guys would like one, too. We can’t discriminate, now, can we?” Professor Stratton asked as she finished unloading her briefcase before class.
“That was quite rude of me. I’ll try to rectify that over the semester,” David said with a straight face.
“I think you should start with me,” Professor Stratton said with a half-smile. “Now, where were we...”
Alyssa mouthed ’Sorry.’
David ignored her and started to take notes because, for him, this was one of his most challenging classes. He sent Lexi a note to have several boxes of Cream Pies sent to his dorm room. If he was going to joke about it, he had better be ready to offer them a treat made with marshmallow fluff sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies.
During his lunch, Lexi called David.
“Alyssa was excited by your news,” he said.
“Your mom wasn’t as happy.”
“She’ll get over it.”
“I don’t know, she’s been grumbling about a meddlesome son all morning. I think she’s going to fire me,” Lexi admitted.
“Mom is like me in a lot of ways. Just stay out of her way for the day; she’ll be fine tomorrow. If you’re your normal indispensable self, she’ll forgive you. On the other hand, I might have to worry because Mom holds grudges.”
“She hasn’t given me the go-ahead on renovating the new office.”
David knew his mom was pissed, but some things had to get started, or when the new agents started, they’d be crammed into the Malibu office.
“Line up everything and hand it to her tomorrow,” David said.
“What if she balks?” Lexi asked.
“Then call me, and I’ll deal with it. She seems to forget we’re equal partners in this business.”
“And yet you never pull any money out of this venture.”
“Have you ever gotten between my mom and a dollar bill on the ground?” David asked, scandalized.
“That I’d like to see,” Lexi said. “Thanks for the advice. All right, I’ll quit bothering you about work stuff. Go play football or whatever games you get up to for fun.”
“I’ll do that,” David said and hung up on her.
When his phone rang again, David was ready to go to his next class. This time, it was his mom.
“I thought I would give you a little payback and spend some of your money,” she said.
“You bought a new car?” David asked.
“Oh, I spent a lot more than that, but I will need something until I get mine back.”
“I’m sure you can figure that out.”
“I told Jack Mass to begin building your home on the river. He’s pulling the permits and will break ground as soon as he gets them and the ground thaws,” she said.
David groaned because he’d almost forgotten what winter was like. The ground never froze in LA; if it did, it would be a national tragedy. He couldn’t imagine the chaos if Angelenos had to drive with ice on the roads. Then again, it might weed out some of the ones who should be banned from driving anyway.
“Do you miss the snow?” David asked.
“No, but Duke might. He was panting when I went home for lunch.”
“Hey, are you okay with what I did Friday and Saturday?” David asked.
“If I weren’t, I would’ve called you about it.”
“Just so you know, Lexi’s convinced you’ll fire her.”
“Good, then I can dump all this on her and let her figure it out,” his mom said.
“The sad part is she’ll love it.”
“I needed to do this last year; I just never seemed to get around to it.”
