When they pulled through the gate to his Malibu home, Cassidy put her hand on David’s arm before he could get out.

“Before you talk to Peggy, answer me this: what’s the most important thing in your life?”

David didn’t have to think about his answer.

“My kids.”

Cassidy cocked her head and gave him a sly look.

“Are you telling me Mr. Happy doesn’t figure into it?”

David shrugged.

“He handles lust, not love. Frankly, he’s pretty easy to satisfy.”

“Stupid boy,” Cassidy grumbled.

“You asked.”

“Yeah, I did. Well, if your kids are the most important thing, then they have to come first. Any relationship you have outside of that needs to fit in with them.”

David gave Cassidy some side-eye.

“And your point?”

“Just that,” Cassidy said as she got out.

The munchkins were coming out of the back of the house, excited to see her.

David considered what his little ninja had just laid on him. He thought it had two possible meanings. The first was dealing with Dave and Peggy. While he cared for Peggy, he’d just said his adoptive son should come first.

The other was more disturbing: Tracy. So far, she and his kids hadn’t come into conflict. His college life was separate from his family. That was fine until he graduated, when the kids would move in with him; his parents had only agreed to raise them for so long. If his kids truly came first, it brought into question whether Tracy was really his forever girl, as he’d begun to think.

All that made him ask himself whether he should even be serious with someone at the moment. It all went to his desire to be in love and everything that entailed. David should’ve recognized that every time he fell into that trap, it bit him in the butt. If nothing else, Brook and Lexi should’ve cured him of that line of thought. And yet, here he was, doing the same thing with Tracy.

Why was he in a committed relationship if he didn’t see wedding bells in their future? Why not be single and enjoy all that meant? Or maybe they should open their relationship and see other people?

Maybe not the last one because his alpha male still had a bad habit of declaring girls as ‘mine.’ He wasn’t good at sharing.

Deep down, he knew the real reason he’d decided to be exclusive with Tracy, but he didn’t like the answer. When you peeled back all the layers, it was apparent: he’d become exclusive with her because it was easier. Laying it bare like that made him realize he didn’t like the optics of that admission.

Tracy was his best friend. The two of them had a history; she’d been his first girlfriend, and they’d lived through all the drama that surrounded that. They’d been through a lot and, amazingly, had come out better on the other side. One thing he knew for sure was that, whatever he did, he didn’t want to lose their friendship.

Because it was so easy, he didn’t have the hassle of finding someone to spend time with. But for him, that was a lame excuse because he had several girls willing to spend quality time with him if he were to be available.

That being said, David wondered if he should set a new life goal: Don’t take the easy way out if it’s not the right thing.

If he’d followed that rule years ago, he could’ve saved himself a lot of angst. He’d constantly kicked the can down the road, waiting for the correct answer to appear and bail him out. How much time had David wasted doing that? If he’d just made up his mind and acted, even if it was wrong, at least he wouldn’t have tied himself into knots for months on end.

He’d just had an epiphany.

Being indecisive was a time-waster.

It would be one thing if he were retired, and the most exciting thing he had to do that day was wait for the mail to come. But he’d hired people to handle stuff like watching his kids, walking the dogs, keeping up with his social media, running his businesses, and much more. If he could get the self-generated angst out of his life, he could focus on stuff that mattered, like his kids.

Peggy’s fiancé wanted to take Dave to meet his parents, which caused David to drive to Malibu to deal with ... well, that was BS. He should’ve dealt with that on the phone with Peggy and told her what he wanted. If Dave didn’t want to go, he shouldn’t have to.

Of course, he could see his mother weighing in when Peggy complained to her. David’s mom was of the school that you did what she said until you moved out of the house—your opinion didn’t matter. In some ways, David agreed with that, but this felt different. Dave already suspected that Peggy and Walker didn’t want him in their lives. So, why did they push to have him meet Walker’s parents?

Better yet, why wouldn’t they come visit Dave in Malibu? Why did he have to go to them? Shouldn’t they meet all his brothers and sister, too? Why was David letting himself get embroiled in this drama?

A big mutt put his front paws up on the car door to see why David hadn’t gotten out to give him some love.

David realized that saying hello to his buddy Duke was more important than tying himself into knots and wasting time.

David said hello to his kids and then pulled Dave aside.

“Your mom and Walker will be here soon.”

Dave’s happy face fell, and he looked down at his shoes.

“What’s wrong, buddy?” David asked his son.

“Walker is taking Mom away.”

Suddenly, it all made sense.

“Walker can’t take your mom away. She’s your mom.”

“But—” Dave started and then clammed up.

“You know Mama Ashley leaves to play poker, right?”

Dave nodded.

“But she always comes home, doesn’t she?”

Dave turned his head away from David. Maybe logic wasn’t going to work.

“Yes, your mom is going to move out and live with Walker, but she will always come to see you,” David said.

Dave glanced at his dad.

“Promise?” his son asked.

“I don’t just promise, I pinky swear,” David said.

“What’s pinky swear?”

David put a solemn look on his face.

“It’s the most serious kind of promise you can make. If you pinky swear, you can’t ever back out of it. I would only make that kind of promise if I were a hundred percent sure,” David said.

David waited for his son to process that.

“Okay,” Dave finally said.

David showed him how to do a pinky swear to seal the deal. Dave then left him to join Cassidy, who had all her little ninjas lined up doing ninja stuff. That was much more fun than talking to his dad.

Peggy arrived, and David went out to the driveway to talk to her before she could see Dave. He explained what her son thought and how he’d made a pinky swear that she wouldn’t abandon him. He also suggested that Walker’s parents might want to come to Dave so he was on his own turf.

While they were talking, Walker arrived and parked his car.

“Hello, beautiful,” Walker crooned, his voice low and whiskey-hoarse as he came up behind Peggy, wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his face in her neck.

David felt like he’d thrown up a little in his mouth. He took that as his cue to leave and went to find his dad.

On the way back to campus, traffic was a beast. It made him all the more determined to get his helicopter license.

As he faced the stop-and-go craziness, he was glad to leave. Walker put his teeth on edge, but the man made Peggy happy. She’d explained things to her fiancé so David didn’t have to get involved. She also talked to Dave and pinky-swore that Walker wouldn’t steal her from him.

“David! Slow down. That light’s about to turn red,” Cassidy said.

David thought, ’What the heck?’

“Dad told me that when you get married, you get a driving assistant in your car. Greg confirmed that he now has a driving assistant. It looks like I have one, too,” David quipped.

Cassidy gave him a hooded look.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love my driving assistant because she knows everything about driving,” David said in a smart-aleck tone.

Cassidy tried to cover the smile that was trying to sneak onto her face.

“It’s a good thing because sometimes I get confused. I have no idea how I ever drove anywhere without my driving assistant,” David quipped.

“That’s right; I do provide a valuable service,” Cassidy fired back.

“I know. Without my driving assistant, I would’ve plowed into all those cars. And don’t get me started on the mysterious lights at the intersection. Having my driving assistant explain that green means ‘go,’ yellow means ‘go faster,’ and red means ‘stop’ really helps. I would be a mess without my driving assistant to coach me through all that,” David said.

“Are you done?” Cassidy asked.

“Yep, I’m good,” David said.

“Then get me home in one piece,” Cassidy said, leaving him to drive without assistance the rest of the way back to campus.

Miraculously, they made it without dying. David counted that as a win because it would be his luck to wreck after teasing her. Some days, things did work out.

He thought that until he got back to his dorm room. There, he found a box from Dare with the gear for AI learning. Now, he would have to drive back and show his kids how everything worked.

Yep, David needed a helicopter.

David opened the box Dare sent him. On top was a note that said to put the top headset on. He turned it on and slid it into place. He was surprised when he saw his room as if he were looking through ordinary glasses.

Then Dare’s voice said, “You are looking at what is called augmented reality, or AR. It allows us to integrate digital information with our physical surroundings.”

An icon in the middle of his room said, Begin Demonstration. When he focused on the icon, it disappeared, and three bullet points appeared: Computer Vision, Sensor Fusion, and Spatial Mapping.

Dare’s voice-over continued.

“It takes several technologies to combine the physical and digital worlds into augmented reality.

“Computer vision uses the cameras in the headset to capture data about the environment. That data is fed into sensor fusion to create what you are seeing. Spatial mapping creates a 3D model of everything around you. It allows us to place digital content more precisely.”

The demonstration continued, explaining what it took to put you in your room, overlay content, and how to navigate it using your eyes, hands, gestures, and the like.

Dare then blew his mind when he introduced the virtual reality aspects. Suddenly, David was in Dare’s dorm room with the über-nerd smiling at him.

“Obviously, this is a simulation,” Dare said, “so you won’t be able to ask me any questions. But this system lets us talk in real time if we’re both logged on. It takes video chat to a whole new level. It can be like we’re in the same room.”

Dare made a hand gesture, and suddenly, they were at a café, sitting at an outdoor table in what looked like Paris.

“Wild, right?” Dare asked.

David looked around; it was as though he were there with people at other tables, cars driving by, etc.

“I think you can see that this has almost limitless possibilities. I can envision this replacing multiple devices, from cell phones to big-screen TVs,” Dare said.

Suddenly, the opening of David’s James Bond movie, Devil May Care, began to play. It was like having the biggest big-screen TV you could imagine. It was almost as if you were in the movie.

Then Dare reappeared in his dorm room.

“I’m sure you will figure out all kinds of uses for this, but let’s get to what this does for educational software,” Dare said.
