David woke to the ringing of his phone. He looked and saw it was Faith Sanders, Dare’s girlfriend and partner in the AI project.
“Morning. Did you forget the time difference?” David asked.
“Dare said you get up early to run. I just assumed...” she said and then trailed off. “It is only five a.m. your time, isn’t it?”
“Yep. What do you want?” David asked.
“We need copies of your textbooks. We have a prototype AI running for your preschoolers, but we need textbooks for your college courses.”
“What format do you want?” David asked.
“Anything, really, because we have software to convert it into a format the AI can use.”
“Just tell me whatever’s easiest because I can order the books in different formats,” David said, and listed his online bookstore’s options.
Faith made the selection and gave David her email address.
“How long until I get to test it?” David asked.
“Once we have the books, we’ll feed them into the AI, which will begin a deep dive to verify the content is accurate. It will then figure out key concepts to help you learn and study for tests.”
“What if it disagrees with something?” David asked.
“Then we’ll need human help to decide what to do. Maybe you could share the discrepancies with your professors and see whether they agree with the AI or not.”
“I’ll ask. If they’re not willing, I’ll go to the dean and ask if he can volunteer someone.”
Faith chuckled.
“Dare said you don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I guess he was right.
“I have two more requests. The first is that Dare asked me to send you prototypes for the AI interface. He wants you to pick out which one you like for the kids and also one for older people,” Faith said.
“No problem. I’ll show the ankle-biters the options for the kids’ one. Will there be something for me to use to demonstrate?” David asked.
“One of our classmates made a kids’ game with an AI. I think they’ll love it.”
“Sounds good. What was the second request?” David asked.
“We need a voice for the AI. Dare wants two options, a female one and a male one. It would require whoever does it to spend a day recording a list of words and phrases that we can use to create the AI’s speech.
“And don’t worry, the AI will be trained on large language models, so it’ll sound natural. It won’t sound like some of the phone prompts you hear,” Faith assured him.
“How much can I pay the girl?” David asked.
Faith laughed and said, “Dare said to use your charm and get it for free.”
“Funny how he acts differently when it’s his budget he’s spending,” David quipped.
“It’s actually your money, so do whatever you want,” Faith said.
“Good point. I’ll figure something out,” David said. “Now that I have my marching orders, I need to go run.”
“I promise to call later next time.”
“If you want my full attention, this works. Just don’t make this an everyday occurrence.”
“Got it; thanks,” Faith said, then hung up.
Little Darius was getting wise in dealing with him. He doubted the conversation would’ve gone as well if Dare had called. It looked like Dare had finally learned to delegate, something David had been after him about.
Before leaving to run, David logged onto the bookstore and bought another set of textbooks to send to Faith. Soon after he fired them off, Faith sent him a smiley-face emoji in response. Again, Dare would simply have expected David to comply and would have ignored the email, which would’ve irritated him.
Phil woke up to EZ leaving for his morning classes. He rolled over and was momentarily sad that Sara had moved to the motel. When she slept with him, it wasn’t uncommon for him to have sex three to six times a day. But that much sex had caused him to fall behind in his classes, so it was for the best she wasn’t there to relieve his morning stress.
Instead, he took care of matters in his morning shower, even though masturbating in the communal showers wasn’t ideal. At least he hadn’t done it in the locker room, where he would’ve been on full display. The dorm showers had partition walls with curtains for privacy.
After he ate, he went to the football building to work out. There, he met the newest addition to the team, Wooga Nash. Wooga was a giant man who made even Bear and Cub look small in comparison.
“Your touch.
“All of your touch, touching all of me...
“All of our parts are parts of the ‘we,’” Wooga recited.
“Stop spouting poetry and get back to work!” Grady barked.
Phil hid his smile. Wooga was different—that was for sure—but he was a beast. The only thing holding him back was his need to lose at least forty pounds. And though his stamina was good, it could always be better. The behemoth was covered in sweat, but he just smiled at Grady like the man didn’t scare him, and then got to work.
“Why are you standing around?!” Grady yelled at Phil. “This is my time, and you won’t waste it!”
“Yes, sir,” Phil said, hustling to the first exercise station.
Each player had a customized plan to get his body to where Grady felt it should be by the end of spring. Most of the new guys struggled with the workouts. Phil was lucky to come from a program at Lincoln High where they trained hard, so he wasn’t at all shocked by the intensity.
He focused on the task in front of him.
When he finished his workout, Wooga was gone, and Cub was the object of Grady’s ire. As Phil walked out, Grady called out, “Good job today. Keep it up.”
Cub flipped him off with a sly smirk. Phil was pleased that Grady saw it and began to chew his friend’s ass. It served him right, but Phil knew it would make the big lineman better, so a little motivation never hurt.
When David left his acting class, an attractive girl stepped in front of him.
“Mr. Dawson?”
“Ma’am.”
Her eye twitched when David called her ‘ma’am,’ which was his intent. Mr. Dawson was his dad.
“I’m Kathy Bickford, and I have a proposition for you.”
The corners of David’s lips twitched.
“I have a girlfriend.”
Her hand slapped across her mouth, and after a pause, she chuckled.
“Okay, that did sound bad.”
“Sometimes I like bad, but my girlfriend usually has other ideas.”
“I’m sure she does,” Kathy said. “I understand you’re taking directing, production, and acting classes right now.”
“That’s correct.”
“What if you could knock out all of your class final projects with one?”
“What’s the catch? You want to do an OnlyFans video with me as your co-star?” David asked.
“Funny ... no,” Kathy said. “My acting class is doing ten-minute plays. We want someone to film them.”
“You could swing a dead cat and hit fifty people who’d be willing to do that for you. Why me?” David asked.
“Well,” Kathy drawled. “Some groups would like you to act in their play.”
“Let me guess: you and your classmates want to use the play as part of an audition package you can send to agents. Am I close?” David asked.
“Maybe.”
“How will your classmates react when the agents call me instead of them?” David asked, his tongue firmly embedded in his cheek.
“At least the agents would look at it.”
“We haven’t even discussed our final projects in my classes yet. I’ll consider it if you talk to Professor Blum and get his sign-off. The other thing you need to know is that I have a lot on my plate with a full course load, my podcast, and playing football. And I’ve just agreed to appear in a TV series. That means I can’t have this eating up a lot of my time,” David said.
“I’ll talk to Professor Blum,” Kathy said and scampered off.
David nearly jumped out of his skin when Colleen—his ex and Professor Blum’s TA—grabbed his elbow.
“Sorry,” she said, grinning at his reaction. “But you need to be careful, or every class will look you up to help with their projects. They’re starting to get brave and approach you. So, fair warning.”
He’d noticed a few of them had started to introduce themselves and chat him up. Until Colleen mentioned it, David hadn’t taken much notice. Fortunately, he could now say ‘no’ without making himself feel bad.
David hadn’t committed to any of the projects yet. If the plays sucked or ended up being complete time-wasters, he’d back out. It wasn’t like David didn’t already do a podcast that would qualify for his class projects. If he were smart, he would just do that.
