I didn’t do a good job of concealing the tension I felt during dinner. Blake was wearing his lawyer face—almost emotionless, careful, but observant. Ed and Eve kept shooting me looks. In all the years I’ve known them, they could always read me. Blake told me about “tells” in poker, those subtle giveaways that reveal what you wish to keep secret.
Our kids were oblivious, having a stupid discussion about movies and actors that I tuned out. But I got a few looks from Penny, suggesting her radar was activated in some fashion.
“As your Queen, I’m exercising my royal authority tonight. First, we have mint chip and strawberry ice cream. Second, we have an all hands family meeting.” As I expected, my decrees were met with cheers followed by groans. Ed led the cheering for ice cream, as usual.
Eve cleared away the bowls and returned to her seat, eyeing me and showing some stress. Penny tried to excuse herself.
“I’ll let you guys have your family...”
“Sit down!” That wasn’t friendly Fran. That was my Queen voice. We’re here about you, Penny. To use words my husband will recognize, I want the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.”
Penny took in a huge breath and looked down at the table.
“No, look me in the eyes.” I waited for her chin to rise. “How long have you been living in our pool house?” Everyone started talking at once, so I banged my water glass on the table, loudly. In the silence, I spoke sharply.
“Penny. How. Long.”
“It’s been since ... Eleven weeks.” More talking, and I banged the glass again.
“Why?”
“I don’t have anywhere to live. I had no money and no food. I knew your sons from school.”
“No home. No family?”
“Not anymore. My eighteenth birthday was in May. I graduated from high school and he threw me out. I was sent away with only a bag of clothes.”
The room had gone dead silent, except for the drone of the refrigerator motor. Nobody moved. After a bit, I heard a cough from Ben, and a brief sniffle from Dawn.
“When I found Ben, I hadn’t eaten in three days. I was getting weak. They helped me, brought me food, and hid me in the pool house. When I was a little better, they washed my clothes and brought me inside to meet you as their girlfriend. I’m sorry I lied to you. I’ll get my clothes from behind the cabana and go.”
Penny stood up, tear-stained face and all, and I screeched at her. “SIT DOWN! You’re not going anywhere until I get the truth.”
Ben broke in. “Mom, I’m sorry. She’s right, it’s my fault. I thought ... I thought she was going to pass out right in front of me. I was scared; I didn’t know what else to do...”
Ben ground to a halt, recognizing every word was going to count against him in my eyes. Not for helping Penny, but for not coming to me for help. Bill started to say something and Eve stifled him with just a look.
“Is there some reason your family turned against you this way?” I asked.
“No, not my family. Not exactly.”
“Please explain. You’re not making sense, Penny.” I tried to turn down the temperature in my voice, before the poor girl collapsed in front of us—a serious possibility.
“While I was in high school, my mother—Linda—was raising me. I guess she was lonely, because suddenly there was this man in her life, his name is Martin. We lived in a house originally owned by Mom’s mother, her name was Zelda. She died a couple of years ago, leaving Mom her house and some money.”
