Then there was the other concert. It happened during the Covid crisis. We really wanted to go even though news said it could be a superspreader event, the one that might restart the pandemic, largely abated then. We decided we’d listen from outside. It was in Central Park. At least we might. That would be safer.

I arrived late. Akemi had come first with her dancer friend Kaori. I came by bicycle, avoiding public transportation during the outbreak. There’d been some rain, my grey teeshirt was wet, the front darkened as if by sweat, but the rain, light from the beginning, had all but stopped toward the end of my ride.

I found Kaori and Akemi lying together on the Great Lawn or whatever it’s called- actually no, it wasn’t that but some grass outside the performance area that had been set up. The two close friends looked happy despite the elements, or because of them, the drizzle or mist that remained, gentle and caressing, happy in each other’s company, anyway, very, would have been anywhere. Theirs was an intimacy different from Akemi’s with me and one I couldn’t share.

And they looked so comfortable, lovey-dovey with each other, I thought, keeping a sense of humor, that between the two intimate friends there might be a “super-spreader event.” Stupid joke and of course I didn’t tell them. In fact, they looked really good together, both Japanese, both fresh and not only from rain they’d endured beneath a tarp until it let up. Akemi’s hair tousled, with beads of moisture. As they talked softly, beaming, Kaori leaned forward to undo a tangle, grooming Akemi, and I thought, a little jealously, that she could wrap her around her little finger.

She actually more or less kissed away a lingering drop of rain from Akemi’s forehead and Akemi beamed in response as she drew the back of her hand over the same spot. I use the word “beamed” because that’s what it was like; from Akemi’s smile love seemed to flow unchecked to her friend, to her only. Akemi wanted to touch her too. The emotional connection between them extended to the physical, had a basis in dance they’d done together.

It was Kaori who had introduced Akemi to the dance class she was on her way to the day of her arrest- better put, abduction, as to my way of thinking there was nothing legitimate about it; the move lacked any basis in law or standard police procedure that I could see (this was how things were done under the new administration. Too bad if you have a loved one from another country). Anyway, in the park scene there was that connection to those later events, Akemi’s disappearance. Kaori and she had been close but not in close touch lately, as Akemi was occupied with her painting and Kaori all about dance.

Enjoying nature, the elements, which connected them as the tarp had. It had been a while since they’d met and they were making the most of the reunion, all over each other like hungry, playful monkeys. And don’t accuse me of making a racist comparison. I’d have thought the same thing if they were Europeans.
