Monday marked the beginning of their new routine. Miles dropped off Maya in front of where her friends hung out before school, then parked the car.

“So, that’s him?” asked Liz, watching Miles drive away as Maya walked toward her and the rest of her friends. The entire dance team was there, along with Allie’s boyfriend, who stood behind her with his arms casually around her shoulders.

“Miles Benson?” asked Kris. Maya nodded. Kristen frowned. “He was on the short list of kids most likely to shoot up the school.”

Maya’s eyes about popped out of her head. “What?”

“Don’t read into that!” Kristen blurted. “We know about all of the ‘Most likely to-’ awards.” Kristen looked at her feet and fidgeted, “But there’s an ‘underground’ version that only us on the yearbook staff know. If we didn’t know much about you then you got stuck on the short list. Aside from his name and that he works on computers, nobody on staff knew anything about Miles. I think his candid in the yearbook is just him sitting in the library, reading.”

“If what I’ve seen the past few days says anything, he doesn’t deserve that. Why don’t you change that to, ‘Most likely to appear on Steel Chef,’” Maya suggested.

“Oh really?” asked Liz.

“I’m not even joking. The meals he’s put together over the last few days put most restaurants in town to shame.”

Allie’s boyfriend chuckled. “Already trying to get in your pants, I see.”

“He hasn’t even tried to kiss me. Much less get my pants off.”

“If he’s putting in that kind of effort, then I think Beau is right,” said Liz.

“That’s the thing, he’s not.” When she received a bunch of blank looks in response, Maya continued. “His Mom worked a lot, and he got sick of ramen and microwave dinners, so he taught himself how to cook, and he’s damn good at it.”

Allie glared up at her boyfriend. “It’s better than blackmail.”

“True.”

“Maybe you should try it, Beau?” said Liz with an exaggerated wink.

“As long as I’m cooking on a grill outside, I’ll make whatever she wants,” he chuckled, giving Allie a squeeze.

Allie looked up. “I didn’t know you could cook.”

“I don’t cook. I grill.”

“He must channel his inner caveman,” said Liz, jutting out her chin. “Fire. Meat. Ug.”

Allie rolled her eyes as Beau chuckled before turning her attention back to Maya. “Besides the food, how have things been?”

“His Mom is really nice. We had a good talk while she helped me unpack and put me on their phone plan. She seems excited to have someone she can do ‘daughter-y’ stuff with since Miles doesn’t have any brothers or sisters.”

“Did you check your room for hidden cameras?” asked Kristen.

Maya blushed. “I did, and I even did it in front of his mother. Nothing turned up.”

“In front of his mother?” said Liz. “Were you trying to get thrown out?”

“No, I just remembered Kristen’s suggestion and mentioned it to her as we were unpacking. She said I should do it right then. She also had this air of ‘you aren’t going to find anything’ that felt ... odd.”

“He’s her only child. Of course, he can do no wrong,” said Allie. “I’m with Liz and surprised she didn’t throw you out for suggesting he might do such a thing.”

“She doesn’t seem that hot-headed. Neither of them do. In fact! Oh. My. God. My Dad showed up as we were getting the last of my stuff out of the house, and Miles did this, like, movie-style escape where he squealed the tires and made the car go sideways, then tore through my yard...” The excitement in her face drained away. “I guess I can’t say that. It isn’t my yard anymore.”

“How are you holding up?”

“I cried so much yesterday I thought I might have to throw my pillow in the dryer. Miles and his mother have honestly been great, and his cooking did a lot to lift my spirits. Having something to look forward to every few hours helped take my mind off the fact that I wasn’t in my old house anymore.”

“Did you get everything unpacked?” asked Liz.

Maya gave her friend a confused look. “No, I still have a few boxes stacked in the closet, why?”

Liz shared a mischievious look with Allie before crowing, “Sleepover!”

“What? No! I literally just moved in!”

“Yes, but now that you aren’t under your Dad’s thumb, we can actually have a sleepover and make up for all the ones he wouldn’t let you go to as we were growing up!”

“It would be nice,” said Kristen. “We did miss you.”

“Can’t we do it at one of your places?”

“Where’s the fun in that?” asked Liz. “Then we wouldn’t get to scope out your roommate, judge him harshly, and decide whether or not he’s worthy of being in your presence.”

“I’m liking this idea less and less,” Maya growled.

“I was joking,” said Liz, holding up her hands to ward off her friend’s glare.

“Mostly,” said Kristen. “If you’re living with him, then we want to get a feel for what kind of person he is. I hoped that you might introduce us this morning.”

Maya shook her head. “Miles said he thinks I’ve been through enough in the past week and doesn’t want to be a disruption to my social life, too.”

“Then maybe we’ll wait on the sleepover thing,” said Allie. “But I would like the chance to actually have one with you in attendance.”

“‘In attendance’? You make it sound more like I missed Prom.” Maya’s eyes popped open. “I get to go to Prom!” she squealed just as the bell sounded to start the school day.

After parking the car, Miles did his normal thing and headed to the library before the first period started.

But today was different. This wasn’t unexpected, but he was thinking something more along the lines of Maya’s clique harassing him. Instead, a backpack thudded onto the table beside him as one of the guys in his class slid into the chair next to him.

“Duuuuude ... Did you seriously give Maya Andrews a ride to school this morning?”

Miles looked up from his magazine at Charles “Chuck” Hayes. They hung out for a while in middle school, drawn together by their shared interest in a particular video game. But Chuck wasn’t what Miles would consider a friend. When their interest in the game waned, so did their friendship, and they had barely spoken since their freshman year.

“I did.”

“How did that happen? Was she walking to school, and you picked her up?”

“Something like that.”

“So what’s she like? Did you talk to her?”

“She was riding in my car. What do you think? She’s nice. A lot nicer than I would have thought just a few weeks ago.”

“And fucking gorgeous too. You lucky bastard. Hey, it’s been a while. Any games you’re into right now?”

“I was playing Deetu, but my clan booted me because I suck. I’m thinking about trying something different. Maybe a farming sim or a factory builder. Something more my speed.”

“Dude, that sucks. Fuck those try-hards. You should join my clan. If I’d known you played, I would have invited you ages ago.”

“I just told you I got booted for being a dog-shit player. Why would you want me to join your clan?”

Chuck waved off his argument. “Pffft. We have plenty of crappy players in our clan. We’re there to hang out, have fun, and kill aliens. Just don’t expect to be invited on any raids unless there are enough A-list players to carry you.”

“That’s fair. What’s your gamertag?”

Miles got a few curious looks from people in the popular cliques over the course of the day, but, for the most part, didn’t even make a blip on their radar. However, among the lower echelons, the news that he gave Maya a ride to school made some notable waves, and a couple more of his old acquaintances approached him to ask a few questions.

Then came lunch.

By lunch break, the news had filtered out that Maya wasn’t living at home anymore. While it was clear that a few of her clique knew she was living with Miles, that knowledge was being kept among her friends. That Miles gave her a ride to school that morning didn’t even seem to register among his classmates. But why would it? She and him were worlds apart in interests and social circles. The most likely explanation was that she just got a ride to school from him, and neither Maya nor Miles had said anything to contradict their assumptions. Still, a few people figured out there was more to the story.

Chuck stopped him in the hallway on his way to the library for lunch.

“Dude,” said Chuck, staring wide-eyed at Miles.

After a few seconds of uncomfortable silence, Miles hesitantly asked, “Can I help you?”

“Dude ... Is Maya Andrews living with you?”

“What makes you think that?”

“She rode to school with you, and she ain’t living at home anymore.”

“Those two things aren’t necessarily related.”

Chuck’s eyes narrowed. “But I bet they are.”

“Listen, Maya’s going through a rough time. Whatever she wants to share about her situation is going to have to come from her, not me,” said Miles, stepping around him and continuing toward the library.

“Yeah, but it wouldn’t have been a big deal to tell me if she wasn’t,” Chuck called after him.

Miles kept walking.

By the end of school, the news had gotten fully out that they were living together, and because of it, Miles achieved a bit of uncomfortable fame. At the same time, Maya noticed a few of the people she associated with giving her fleeting looks of disdain before plastering a fake smile on their faces when talking to her. At the end of the day, Miles went home by himself while Maya stayed for dance practice, throwing the school gossip into a tizzy when she didn’t leave with Miles as expected.

At home, Miles loaded up Deetu and Discourse to check out Chuck’s clan.

“I. Fucking. Knew it!” cackled Chuck when Miles joined the clan’s voice channel. “So are you two going out? Have you seen her naked? I need details, dude.”

“Naked?” asked one of the other guys on the call, “Who’s naked?”

“No, and no,” Miles answered, “and if this is all we’re going to talk about, then I’m gonna head out.”

“Wait! Wait. I’ll leave it alone ... for now.”

“Leave what alone? You can’t say all that then leave us hangin’,” said one of the other members.

“Our newest member just had one of the hottest girls in school move in with him.”

“Are they fucking?” another asked.

“No,” said Miles.

“But I bet you wish you were,” Chuck laughed.

“Well, duh.”

“Wait, you’re the guy Maya moved in with?” asked one of the clan members.

“He’s a sophomore from our school,” Chuck explained. “The rest of the guys are scattered across the country.”

“Except me,” one piped up. “I’m in Canada.”

“And we have a couple of people from England, but they’re usually on early in the morning, afternoon for them,” another explained.

“Very cool,” said Miles. “So ... are there aliens that need killing?”

“Hell yeah!” said Chuck. “And I have a couple of builds for you to try that make everything in front of you go boom. Very little skill involved.”

“Sounds like the perfect build for me. I warned you that I suck.”

A chorus of ‘Don’t worry about it’-s erupted from the others in the call.

“We are not top-tier players by any means,” said the player from Canada.

Chuck laughed. “Says the guy with some of the best stats in the clan. Now, look in the clan chat, I posted a screenshot of that build...”

Miles smiled as Chuck loaded them into an activity and began explaining the merits of the loadout he wanted Miles to try.

“I’m home!” Mom called as she walked in the front door, “and you wouldn’t believe who I caught wandering around in our front yard!”

“I was hardly wandering,” said Maya, loud enough that Miles could hear in the kitchen. “Although your mother did save me from getting grilled by my teammates about you.”

“I’ve gotten a fair bit of that today as well,” said Miles as he finished garnishing their plates and set them on the table. “I also got a fair bit of harassment for logging off to make supper for you.”

“Not make supper for me?” asked Mom, feigning indignance.

“Sorry, Mom, your living situation isn’t the talk of the school right now.”

“Is it really?” asked Maya, sitting down. “I’ve been so busy getting interrogated by everyone I know, I haven’t been able to pay attention.”

“Wash your hands first,” said Mom as she bypassed the kitchen and headed straight for the bathroom. “That’ll die down in a few days.”

“I kind of hope not,” said Miles, sitting down as Maya got up from her seat and washed her hands in the kitchen sink. “I spent the last couple of hours playing Deetu and having more fun than I ever have in that game because some people at school wanted to talk to me about you.”

“What’s Deetu?” Maya asked as she sat down again and Miles’s mother joined them.

“First-Person shooter where you get to be space wizards and shoot aliens and robots. My last clan dumped me because I’m not very good at it, but a gamer friend of mine at school invited me to join his today, and I discovered what it’s like to play with people who aren’t a bunch of try-hards.”

“If you know you aren’t very good, then why did you play? This tastes amazing, by the way,” said Maya as they began eating.

“Glad you like it. I didn’t always suck at the game. It evolved as the devs added more and more stuff, and I ... I guess I just didn’t keep up. Although Chuck thinks it might have something to do with my hardware. He gave me a character build today based on throwing lots and lots of grenades and said that I was doing fine as long as I wasn’t trying to shoot anything.”

“That seems like an important skill in a shooting game. What kinds of things were they asking about me?”

“What is our relationship? How long have we been living together? Are we sleeping together? And a few guys are wondering if I had any nude pictures of you.”

“Pretty much the same thing everyone’s been asking me, except for the last part. You’d better not...”

“I don’t. I value my manhood remaining attached to my body. What about you? Did you get much harassment for being a roomie with the loner kid?”

“Only from the twins before practice. They were more worried about how it might affect their standing if you started hanging out with us.”

“They don’t need to be worried about that. I know where I don’t belong.” His mom’s eyes snapped to his face. “In social circles, Mom. Sorry, bad choice of words.”

“Am I missing something?” Maya asked, looking between them.

“It’s related to that thing I suggested you ask him,” said his mother. “I’m guessing you haven’t, yet?”

“What thing?” asked Miles.

“Why you were at the park that night. I warned her you may not want to answer just yet.”

Miles looked down, frowning. “Yeah, I think that’s wise. No offense intended, Maya, but that answer is very personal, and I don’t think we know each other well enough for me to tell you. Besides, you have enough drama in your life right now. No need to lump mine onto you as well.”

“I have a hard time believing you have much drama in your life,” Maya chuckled. Her laugh died on her lips from the glares Miles and his mother leveled at her.

“That was extremely insensitive,” said his mom.

“Just because we aren’t the rockstars of the school who drag everyone into their drama doesn’t mean that the rest of us peons don’t have troubles in our lives.”

Maya sat back in her chair. “You’re right, that was a horrible thing to say, and I’m sorry. As you said, we haven’t known each other long, and from what I’ve seen these past few days, you have a nice, stable life with a mother who loves you very much. Compared to how mine has been lately, it seemed idyllic. I shouldn’t have assumed that everything in your life was video games and gourmet meals.”

“I can see how you might think that,” said Miles, flashing a smile at his mother before looking back at Maya. “My life has certainly gotten better since that night at the park.”

A few days later, Livie picked up Maya from school, and they went to the clinic together, but otherwise, the days took on a rhythm that Miles and Maya quickly fell into. On Maya’s days off from dance and track practice, Miles took her job hunting and, by the end of the week, was hired on as a tech at a pharmacy within walking distance.

Miles introduced Maya to gaming and helped her set up accounts on Vaporware and Discourse. Unfortunately, her laptop was a few years old and couldn’t keep up with a lot of the big-name 3D titles. But she found a 2D farming adventure game that the poor thing could handle without its cooling fans trying to simulate a jet taking off.

In turn, Maya convinced Miles to drag himself out of bed and join her for her morning jogs, another thing that her father had forbidden once her chest began to develop. She also made the comment at supper about wanting to get some new clothes now that she had the freedom to wear what she wanted. Livie thought it was a great idea and transferred some money to Miles’s card, passing it off as a welcome gift to tide her over until she got her first paycheck, and suggested that she try to help him update his style a little bit as well.

Miles received the notification of the transfer, and his eyes nearly fell out of his head when he saw the amount.

“Mom, did you press zero one too many times?” he asked, holding up the phone.

His mother grinned. “Nope, you two have fun.”

“That’s not an update, Mom. That’s a whole new wardrobe.”

“And a haircut,” she turned to Maya, “something stylish.”

Miles looked at Maya, convinced that she wouldn’t want to drag him around as she went clothes shopping. Instead, she was eyeing him up like a piece of meat. He could see the images flitting through her head as she mentally dressed him in different outfits over and over.

A few days passed before they both had the free time to go shopping, and it felt like Maya was more excited to go clothes shopping for him than for herself.

“Why are you so into this?” Miles asked as she held up a shirt in front of him at their third menswear store at the mall so far.

“Because it’s kind of fun, and it’s a way to give back for everything you’ve done for me. I do have an ulterior motive. All my friends have been asking me to introduce you to them. They’ve actually been avoiding you until you felt comfortable enough for introductions. I’m hoping some new clothes will help.”

“I never felt uncomfortable. I just didn’t want to disrupt your social life.”

“I appreciate that, but my social life has been thoroughly disrupted by living with you, and while we may only be roommates, you are kind of a big part of my life at the moment. My friends see that and want to meet you.”

“They want to meet a guy they’ve been going to school with since elementary.”

“I know, it sounds goofy, but it’s the truth. Nobody knows anything about you. Even Kristen hardly knows anything about you, and she’s on yearbook staff. They seem to know so much about everyone it’s almost creepy.”

“Did you consider that maybe I wanted to stay under everyone’s radar?”

Maya paused before holding up another shirt. “Do you want me to stop?”

“No.” He did, but she was having too much fun to tell her that. Miles also didn’t mind her fawning over him. He was enjoying that part very much. But the whole situation was extremely uncomfortable. “Try to remember that I’ve spent the last few years convincing myself that I wasn’t wanted. Not by my father, mother, grandparents, or even the people I considered friends. Just in the last couple of weeks, that image of what my life has been has started to crack and crumble. Nobody knew anything about me because nobody wanted to be around me. Or so I thought.”

“But your mother loves you. That’s plain as day.”

“It seems obvious now because she’s around a lot more often. But a month ago, you couldn’t have said that because she was constantly working. It’s hard to feel loved and wanted by someone you never see. On top of that, Mom admitted that when my Dad first left, she blamed me for a while before realizing how awful of a person she was being.”

“I’m glad she came to her senses. But do you really want to keep going? I can grab a few things that are more your current style and go with those.”
