The hyenas coming so close to our village had Wenok concerned. I felt the same, the hyenas had never come withing a mile of our village and yet they had probed last night.
Laya, three hunters, and I went on a scouting patrol the next morning after discussing it with Gogon and Wenok. It was agreed that scouting around our village might explain why the hyenas probed our village.
The five of us rode out at the same time a group of hunters and two groups of gatherers were leaving. It was funny as we all started in the same direction but after about 100 yards one group of gatherers turned off to the garden where they would be gathering today. At about 500 yards the second group of gatherers turned toward the tree line where they would be gathering today. Not much more than 200 yards and the hunters turned toward a large prairie where they were going to hunt today.
Our group of five went about another 500 yards or so and began to circle around the village. We moved opposite the hunters so not to spook or drive off any prey they were stalking.
We made our first loop just before lunchtime as we had been moving very slow scanning and looking for anything that might give us a clue as to why the hyenas had probed our village.
We could see the hunters dealing with the prey they had successfully taken and appeared to be packing up to head back to the village. They had been quick to find and take whatever prey they had and were going back to the village early not having to stay out late due to tracking or chasing prey.
We had stopped and were giving the horses a rest while we ate a light lunch we had packed. Laya suggested moving out 1000 yards before starting another loop. I agreed and said more or less would not change if we find something or not.
We were about halfway through the loop when we saw the pack of hyenas, it was a large pack we were counting about 35-40 with them moving around it was hard to get an exact count. All five of us got between 30 something and 40 something for all three of the counts we attempted. Laya’s count was the most consistent as her three counts were 33, 36, 35. I got 31, 35, 42 for my three counts. The three men with us each got the following counts, 37, 41, 35; 41, 45, 40; 31, 35, 33.
We ate dinner which was a cold meal of dried meat, salted vegetables, bread, and water just before sunset.
We circled wide around the hyenas and started back for the village when we saw a pride of lions made up of nine females and two males, one was the dominate obviously due to his huge size and the other was a young male maybe half his size that he had not run off yet.
This would cause a serious problem if they were moving closer to our village. Laya said she would stay and watch the lions and for the rest of us to quickly go back to the village discuss a possible plan and return tomorrow to see what the lions intentions were.
The four of us arrived as everyone was preparing for bed. The urgency of this problem had Gogon calling for a quick meeting of the council. When the lion sighting was described everyone quickly agreed that a hunting party should be sent out at sunrise in case the lions were moving toward our village. 35 hunters would be going this was my idea as to have three hunters for each lioness and four for the males. Laya and I would make 37 and allow the two of us to help wherever we might be needed. Gogon and Wenok made the final number 41 when Wenok said he would be the leader of the hunting party and also added a healer and camp crew because we might be required to stay out overnight once or twice while stalking or tracking the lions.
My mates all volunteered to be the camp crew and Umba as our healer, she had been trained by Ebla.
We took eleven who could use the X-bow leaving the rest to protect the village. Everyone else could use a bow with extreme accuracy. Wenok had his X-bow as did I just in case.
The hunting party was up and packed well before sunrise so we were able to leave as soon as there was enough light as the sun began to rise.
We rode to the area where we left Laya and I figured she would find us before we could find her.
Unfortunately we found the lions or rather they found us before we met up with Laya. We were not surprised or ambushed by the lions. It just happened that as we were riding along we saw them rise up from where they had bedded down for the night. They were maybe 200 yards away from us and the horses did not like that fact.
We were able to control the horses and had everyone quickly dismount with everything they would need for this hunt then my mates and Umba lead the horses away from the lions.
The lions seemed interested in the horse and began to trot in our directions. I noticed Laya coming from our left flank not at a dead run but a fast trot. The lions were now about 175 yards and closing.
When Laya reached our group Etla had come to get her horse, a quick hug and Etla mounted the horse to ride back to where they had moved the other horses.
Laya gave us three extra X-bows now and the lions were about 150 yards away and had increased their pace not a dead run but slightly faster trot. We quickly divided the lions so a X-bow and two regular bowmen each had a target. They would fire all together and quickly reload for another shot at their own pace and continue until their target was dead.
It is unsettling to stand and watch these huge lions trotting toward you. At 60 yards the group fired their first shot. Eight of the eleven X-bows hit their target. Only three bowmen missed their target and only one was also missed by the X-bow. Wenok, Laya, and I each shot at the lions that had been missed by the first X-bow shot and were successful in hitting our target.
Surprisingly only three lions were still moving after the first volley. The young male who now had Wenok’s X-bow bolt in his right shoulder which was causing him to limp slightly. Two lionesses that also had been hit in the shoulder area causing them to also limp. The second volley of arrows killed all the lions as some were not moving but still obviously alive. All the X-bows were reloaded and once all the bowmen had reloaded themselves our group moved forward very carefully to confirm that all the lions were dead.
