With springtime came all the new babies added to the one year olds we already had. This created some issues that had not been needed before. Daycare or childcare for the one-year-olds and newborns to allow most of the new mothers or rather all the mothers the ability to return to whatever duties she had before becoming pregnant.
It was determined that four times a day the new mothers needed to go and feed their babies. This was important for both the baby and mother because of course the baby needed to be fed to grow healthy and strong. The mothers needed the relief from pressure in their breasts as they filled with milk. For most it was not an issue, they simply stopped what they were doing moved to the new daycare hut and fed their baby.
For those who were outside of the village this created a problem. I don’t recall who came up with the simple idea of a carriage going around to the areas where the new moms were working to pick them up bring them back to the village to feed their baby then return them back to their work detail twice a day. The moms could feed their baby before dropping them off at the daycare and a final time once they got home and had collected their baby. This meant it was only necessary to pick up the moms twice during the day.
I was helping with getting a farm or rather large garden started. It was easy to get whatever plant we wanted transplanted from where it currently was growing to where we were establishing our garden.
I also started a small ditch from the river to our garden area for irrigation at first everyone did not understand what or why I was asking them to dig the ditch but they quickly understood once the water started to flow. Gogon had them add a small pond or rather had them dig a pit about twenty paces by twenty paces and as deep as a man standing, about 30 feet by 30 feet by 6 feet or 4800 cubic feet which is about 36,000 gallons of water.
What really shocked me was the fact that it only took us a month to get all of this done. Since we had transplanted everything in our garden they were already grown and we just had to wait for them to bloom and produce food. Wheat, oats, and barley were different, we had to plant seeds for these as they were too fragile to try and transplant.
I explained that it would be easier in the long run to have the wheat, oats, and barley all in a separate field for each to allow for easier harvesting. I really wanted to grow rice if there was something like it here and if it could be grown here near our village.
We had a really horrific rainstorm yesterday that started midmorning and lasted until noon today. More than 24 hours of nonstop rain and I mean downpour hard rainfall. When it finally stopped the ground still had standing water not just puddles but standing water almost 2” deep in most places.
This gave me a sudden idea to try and make a rice paddy field. I know we did not have rice seed but if we could get a rice paddy made and were able to maintain it the next step would be to search for rice.
I was not thinking huge but a 20 foot by 20 foot square should be sustainable. At least I was hoping it would and just scrapping a field 20 feet by 20 feet square about 2”- 3” deep would be very easy with the ground still wet.
Everyone thought I was crazy but did not argue due to most if not all of my ideas so far worked out to everyone’s benefit. It only took about an hour to scrap out what ended up being a 25 foot by 30 foot square or rectangle I guess you would have to call it.
When we finished it was easy to lift water puddles using a thin animal skin and dump it into the paddy.
The ladies had more fun doing this than the men did so we left them to it and when they finally stopped there was almost 2” of standing water in the paddy.
About a week later a small group of people walked up to our village. There were seven of them three men two women and a young boy and very young girl. Tuluk mated to Angee with their son Viddu, Ranto mated to Eckel with their daughter Indol, and Sobel an unmated male.
They had travelled far running away from drought which was causing fighting in their land far to the northeast. The only reason most had not left was the fact that it was coastal and fishing was plentiful. Drinking water was the main issue.
The one thing they had that caught my eye at our evening meal was what looked like rice. When I asked about it they said it was plentiful in the swampland. I asked if they had seed and asked them to look at our paddy. Angee, Eckel, and Sobel all agreed that our paddy would grow this plant but only if we could keep it full of water to the level it was at now.
I figured we could cut a small ditch into the main irrigation ditch that would divert a small amount of water to the paddy as needed.
Since they had a large amount of rice, they called it flan. They allowed Gogon, Wenok, Kaalaa, Q’la, Netti, Echee, and me taste some. Sobel actually had some flan seed. I asked if they were allowed to stay here in our village would he help to grow flan. Sobel looked to Tuluk who looked at Angee who turned to Kaalaa and asked if we would accept them into our village. Kaalaa looked at Gogon who looked at me and when he saw me smile looked at Tuluk and asked him if he and his group would join our village.
Everyone started laughing and finally Tuluk said that they would be honored to join our village as he could see there was great leadership and everyone appeared to have a say in things needing to be decided.
Gogon stood and said loud enough without shouting “Welcome our new village members” everyone shouted “WELCOME!”
Gogon sat down and asked what huts were available for our new members. Q’la said the unmated ale hut was being used with the unmated female hut since we did not have any unmated male and had so many unmated females mostly due to them being too young to mate yet.
This made Sobel smile as he now had or would soon have many unmated female to choose from. He did not know that our females were learning that they had more say in who they allowed to mate with them. But I was sure he would not have any trouble finding a mate in fact I was very sure he would probably end up with two. As many of our mated couples were finding it very nice to have more than one female in a group to make the family work easier.
