Gogon called a halt just as Laya kicked the second male and was able to decrease the impact enough to only stun the male not hurt him. It did stop his attack and cause him to drop his switch. Because his hands went to his crotch as he dropped to his knees. Everyone grunted, the males louder for obvious reasons.

Gogon then asked who among the females wished to learn how to fight so they can protect the village.

I was not surprised when every single female stood and raised her hand some raised both.

I was surprised that Gogon and Wenok turned and asked how I intended to begin training the females. They knew about half were already being taught the bow. They agreed since I pointed out that the females would be far away from the enemy shooting the bow, they would not be fighting face to face.

I was just getting my foot in the door so to speak and it was obvious that the females could be effective in face to face fighting if they worked in pairs or groups of three which I was going to stress and teach. Like my mates they would learn to fight one on one because that most likely will happen in battle but I would stress fighting in pairs or preferably in groups of three.

I even had suggested to the males to fight in pairs as this would give them an advantage others might not recognize or think of. Two on one increased the odds of defeating their opponent faster than one on one and might make the difference in being outnumbered from the start.

I suggested starting tomorrow, asking for the males to help in starting the training with the females as both could learn at the same time and needed to begin to develop trust and understanding of fighting together.

I made the rule that mates were not allowed to pair up during training as I did not want to start something between mates due to something happening in training. Gogon agreed with me as he realized his mate was also going to be training. He was proud of Kaalaa as she was the one to land the blow against the protector she fought with Wenok’s mate Nitti and Eble the healer.

It was also decided to send Laya and six protector/fighters to scout the enemy again. As close as the enemy was I had all the rest of the protectors/fighters stay prepared to be called at any time. Wenok agreed with this and add that ten would be armed and standing by at all times just in case. Gogon and I agreed with that idea.

My three mates ended up being more help in teaching the female due to them not listening or tolerating any whining or complaining. They just showed the female what she had done wrong watched her make the correction and then sent her on her way to practice more. My three were harder on the females than they were with the males and the males noticed. Several said so to Wenok who in turn asked me about it.

I used the excuse that females never spoke to males in this manner and that we could pair a male co-instructor with each of my mates who could yell at the males to do whatever my mates were telling them to do. Wenok laughed and said it would be easier for me and him to do that then to try and find three males good enough to do it. I asked about Gogon and Wenok looked at me like I had spoken in a foreign language.

I found that Gogon was not training because he was the chief. I went and found him immediately to ask about this. Gogon was embarrassed as he was one of the best fighters but as chief he was not supposed to fight. I overplayed laughing so hard I fell down and made such a scene almost everyone was looking. When I pretended to finally regain my composure I asked him what he planned to do if and when enemy broke through our lines and rushed him.

We all were surprised when Kaalaa who had walked up when she saw me talking to Gogon, whack him on the head and began to cuss him up one side and down the other. She was yelling about how if she could fight so could the chief. Gogon smiled thanked his mate and picked up a training switch, shouting, “I commanded everyone to learn how to fight so EVERYONE can protect our village, which include the CHIEF!” Everyone cheered and after this brief moment training began again, I noticed there was more attention and vigor this time.

At dinner Gogon, Wenok, their mates, my mates and I started discussing how we could protect the village from this large enemy. I suggested we limit how they can approach our village which would decrease their advantage in numbers. Before I could explain all of them asked how we could do this.

I explained that we could use a simple shallow trench around the village with sharp spikes at the bottom made wide enough that it could not be jumped over or crossed easily. I also said that adding spears angled upward away from the village just on the village side of the trench would also stop an enemy from jumping over the trench.

Wenok, Kaalaa, and Eble all asked at the same time why a trench.

Before I could answer Gogon and Etla both said that just putting spikes in the ground could easily be stepped through being extra careful where you step. Having to step down meant you could not easily place your foot.

I smiled at their understanding of the principle behind the trench and quickly agreed but added that with enough time the trench could be covered or disguised allowing the first enemy approaching to be caught in the trap. This would increase the possibility of the enemy spreading out their forces. This might help with how many we would be facing to start.

I added that everyone, and I stressed everyone including children big enough to dig or carry spikes or help in anyway should be used.

Gogon and Kaalaa both said that could and would be done. Both stood and moved to call for a village meeting and our planning session ended.

The meeting was quick Gogon simple explained what everyone and he repeated everyone would be doing after a fast breakfast. All the children too small to help would be gathered in one place and one protector and one adult female would watch over them, using as many of the younger children to help as needed. Everyone else was going to make a trench around the entire village and more details would be given after breakfast. He asked everyone big enough to make two hands of spikes. Then he looked at me and I added to make them about the length of their forearm and sharp at both ends.

Gogon asked if there was anything else needed. I said for everyone to bring something to use to dig.

Gogon then said for everyone to go and once they had made the spikes to sleep early as everyone would be getting up early tomorrow. Kaalaa added instructions to all the women that Gogon and I did not understand, as we both looked at each other then shrugged our shoulders and laughed.

The next morning everyone was up earlier than normal and seemed to be ready to get started once breakfast was finished. Gogon and I realized what Kaalaa had said last night when we found breakfast was coffee, tea, or water to go with dried meat, sliced fruit, and bread. Breakfast only took about 20 minutes.

I explained while everyone ate how to break up into work groups. The males to include all the boys big enough to dig would start the trench ten paces from the edge of the village. Then I had anyone who wanted to try and jump from a line I drew on the ground as far as they could jump. I did not limit how far they could take a running start as I wanted to get the maximum distance anyone might be able to jump.

It was determined that just over four paces but not farther than five pace was the farthest distance about 8 or 9 feet. Gogon and I agreed that half or we decided on two paces would be wide enough since we would be adding the spear wall which I decided to change to three strands of rope which would look less conspicuous as it would just appear to be a barrier to keep animals out of the village. This would be easier to construct as well, simply put poles up about every six paces and tie three strands of rope between them.

Kaalaa quickly said this could be done by the children and some of the women. Gogon told her to select her team and begin. Then added for her to call on him or me if needed. Kaalaa kissed him and moved off to gather her team.

Wenok was instructed to begin the trench and Gogon and I would move around and help with whatever issues came up.

The trench was to be 10 inches or so, just deep enough that you could not easily step down into it. I explained to place the spikes spread out enough and angled straight up for some and slightly angled away from the village or toward the edge the enemy would be coming from. This would make trying to step down avoiding the spikes harder. The spikes only needed to be set deep enough that they would not fall as when something struck the spike it would push it deeper into the ground until the ground stopped the spike and then the spike would stab into whatever was pushing against it.

I demonstrated by putting several spikes in the ground and dropping a melon on them. Everyone saw the melon land on the spikes and push them just a little before the spikes stabbed into the melon.

Three spikes successfully stabbed into the melon, one straight up and two that were angled.

By lunchtime, the entire backside of the village was completed and almost a third of one side.

By dinnertime both side had been completed. This was a good thing as Laya and her guards returned with bad news. The enemy was ready to attack at any time. Laya had managed to sneak into their camp and get close enough to the leaders to hear their talk about how they would attack.

Mostly it was bragging about how they would kill all the males and take all the females.

I was discussed and decided to split into two groups, half would go to the far side of the village and attack from there. The other group would attack from the opposite side and they would meet in the middle of the village.

Her count was slightly more accurate and estimated there to be just over 80 fighters. Their female would stay back just out of the fighting and come forward to bind captured females and take them back outside the fighting. Laya estimated there to be about 30-40 females over 10 years old, she said their did not appear to be any children younger than that.

I said this was not bad news as we were ready for them. I added that if they split into two groups we would only be facing about 40 in each group. If we set three groups of five at each of the other sides of the village it might help with convincing them to splitting their forces. If they do split in half as planned, one group could join our main force. The other two would stay just in case some of the enemy manage to get across the trench.

With just 20 facing their main force at our village entrance would help convince them to split their forces in half. If we keep the 25 woman back until the enemy begins their charge that would make our number 55 to 40 giving us the advantage. The truth would be the women fighting in pairs meant only an additional 12 fighters or just over 30 against 40. But if we attacked with bows as soon as the enemy begins their charge we might wound or kill I was guessing 15 which would only leave 25 against our 30 giving us the advantage.

I added the possibility of them breaking into more than two groups to try and attack the village from all sides. Our trench and wall of spears would stop this from being effective. If this were the case the women could split into four groups of six and use their bows to attack the enemy as soon as they charge. The men would do the same obviously and this should wound or kill half of their attacking forces.

One of the wood workers made the suggestion to hide the spear wall and use a rope system that when pulled would stand the spear wall up at the angle toward the enemy. If this would work, the enemy would do a running jump to get over the trench once it was discovered and just as the enemy reached the edge of the trench and started their jump the wall of spears would raise up for them to impale themselves on.

It only took two tries to have a successful working hidden wall of spears. Once the wall of spears was raised legs would drop into place to keep the spears in place.

Laya went out alone that evening to check the intentions of the enemy. She returned just before sunrise saying they were preparing to attack and had decided to attack with two groups. However, she heard their leader saying he would hold back 10 men who would follow him once the main force broke through our defenses and rush to the center of our village to capture as many females as possible and kill any males they found.

Their main force was going to be 40 and the opposite side would attack with 30.
