My name is Deke Comes. I used to work as an MMA/Combative Instructor.
I had been watching anime online when the largest Solar Flare in the history of our sun burst directly toward earth. My computer screen flashed bright white blinding me momentarily and when my vision cleared, I was on my back in a grass field naked and feeling like I had just run a 50-meter dash in less than 4 seconds, carrying 100 pounds while getting electrocuted.
I felt something bad had happened and suspected I was not in Kansas anymore as the saying goes. My first clue was the fact that I could see two suns. The smaller one was lower on the horizon and appeared to rise in the north and set in the south twice a day if you were to assign a compass barring to it. The larger sun would rise in the west and set in the east once a day and was much brighter.
I met Laya a female Lynx person, Laya looked like a female but was covered in fine fir everywhere except her breasts and had real cat ears along with a short tail. Her face looked more human than feline but you could tell she was not completely human.
Laya sent me to a village where I became the War Chief after demonstrating my fighting skills.
I ended up with a mate and strangely enough had Laya given to me as my slave after convincing everyone that she had been my slave before I supposedly was attacked and lost my memory.
Why was I the War Chief, well another group or clan that had suffered severe drought and other natural disasters had attacked the village and I demonstrated extremely effective fighting skills.
After interrogating a prisoner we discovered that all of the remaining members of this clan or group was making their way toward our land and intended to capture our females, kill all the males, and take over our land.
This brings us to the current meeting we were having.
I explained how I recognized the blowguns as a sudden flash recall from before my attack. I now also remember other weapons me people had developed for hunting first and fighting second. I described a bow and arrow and promised to make and demonstrate its effectiveness for both hunting and fighting. I also described armor for protecting the body and again promised to make and demonstrate how it worked as well.
Then we discussed sending scouts out to see where this enemy was and how long before they reached us. I suggested me sending Laya as this was one of the reasons I had her as my servant. Calling her my servant instead of slave brought questions. I quickly answered that my people had two categories we referred to persons under another person’s control. A slave was often referred to as one who was poorly cared for and expected to do any and all tasks given to them immediately and without question or hesitation, not complying could result in serious punishment. However, a servant was referring to one who is treated almost like a family member or almost like a regular person. They are expected to obey all instructions immediately and without question or hesitation but rarely in fact almost never disobey or defy the person in charge of them.
Everyone quickly understood since this is the manner I had been treating Laya this whole time. So when I said that sending her out to scout was what I had trained her to do. It was suggested to send a few fighters with her to protect her. I explained that traveling by herself, Laya could move much faster than any fighter or hunter could and it would be easier for her to hide by herself than if there were others with her. This made sense and the issue was resolved as everyone agreed with my suggestion.
We broke for lunch and while lunch was being prepared I asked for and was brought the items needed to make a bow, armor, and a makeshift arrow. I was watched intently by just about everyone as I put the arrow together first as it was the hardest and needed the most time to set (glue on the fletching) the bow was last as it was the easiest to make. The armor was not difficult to make it just needed to be sized to the person going to wear it.
The arrow was easy to make once I described what I needed. I asked for a sapling the same width as the smallest finger and as long as the arm from the shoulder to the tip of the fingers. One of the women gatherers yelped, jumped up to her feet, and took off running. Two male protectors turned and ran to follow her. Daywa a 19 year old single female returned with several reed like saplings that were perfect for arrow shafts. Feathers were easy as well since we ate birds of all sizes. I asked for tail feathers that were as long as the hand from the wrist to the tips of the fingers and a woman turned and said something to a young girl who nodded stood and ran off. She quickly returned with a basket full of feathers all perfect for fletching. I turned to the knapper I could not remember her name and asked for a small piece of flint or obsidian about the size of her thumb and as thin or flat as she could find.
I asked for glue and the strongest piece of wood about two fingers wide and one finger thick, the length needed to be from the ground to the shoulder and I suggested bringing two or three different types of wood to see which would work best. Two men left to go get what I asked for.
I then asked for the thickest piece of leather as large as was available and two shirks along with needle and thread. Two women stood and went to gather these items.
Juwoo was the name of the female who brought a large hide that was very thick about ¼” or more. Fueb brought the shirks, needle and thread. I had Hakuu stand as the model and two pieces of hide were cut to fit on his chest and back. Once I laid the shirk down and set the leather hide where the chest and back area was Fueb and Juwoo pushed me aside and set the second shirk on top and began to sew the edges together.
Everyone laughed and Gogon said that this was indeed a great idea for protection. I then took a shaft and ran a kutir along the length to smooth out any knots or bulges. Then I took a small piece of leather hide and put sand on it. I folded it in half and began to slide the shaft through the folded hide while twisting it back and forth, the sand wrapped in the folded leather smoothed the shaft even more. Daywa picked up another shaft and began copying what I had done.
After getting the shaft as smooth and straight as I could it was time to add the fletching. I selected two feathers that were close to the same size and shape and cut them down the middle carefully. Then I used some glue just on the cut edge of the feather to attach it to the end of the shaft leaving about ½” from the end. I did this three times evenly spacing them. I asked for a length of thread about as long as my arm. Fueb handed me the thread and I carefully began to wind it around the feather fletching winding several turns in front of the fletching and after the fletching and glued the thread ends in place. I cut the notch into the end of the shaft and set it aside.
Daywa had caught up to where I was and asked if she had done everything correctly. I observed she had done a better job than I had and said she would be in charge of arrow making. This immediately made her a very important female and being single would now have many callers.
I remembered Ayalla’s name she was one of the knappers when she came back carrying a bundled up hide. When she laid out the hide there were many small pieces of flint and obsidian along with a fist size chunk of each and her hard stone and knapping tools.
I was able to find a perfect flint arrowhead triangle shaped with a long back end just the right thickness. Carefully splitting the other end of the shaft just about an inch long evenly in the middle of the shaft I was able to use glue to set the arrowhead in place and asked for a very long piece of thread. Fueb made a face and pulled a roll of thread from her pouch and handed it to me. I thanked her and shocked everyone when I gave her a friendly hug.
I then carefully wrapped the thread around the end of the shaft tightly holding the glued arrowhead in place and preventing the shaft from splitting further and I glued this thread in place as well. Daywa asked for the rest of the thread as she was ready to put an arrowhead on her arrow. She had already done the fletching. I asked her to make another while I made the bows. Daywa smiled, nodded, and continued to finish the arrow.
I then picked up the wood that had been brought and the first piece I tried to bend snapped instantly.
I laughed and said that is why I said to bring many different types of wood, some will break some will bend but what is needed is a piece that fights back against being bent. The next piece I picked did just as I had said and just bent and stayed bent. There were two pieces of wood left and both would work as they flexed and bent but quickly returned to being straight. I chose the piece that was more resistant and quickly flexed back to being straight. I carefully shaved strips off each end to balance and thin the ends added notches and then asked for some cordage.
I had the same problem with the cordage as the wood. Some would break right away, some would break after being stretched tighter, and some just stretched. Then I remembered that sinew could be used. When I explained what I wanted it took a moment and several different examples before Umba brought some to me. It was dried out but once I soaked it in water and pulled it apart into thin strings I was able to braid three piece together to make a perfect bowstring. Umba was copying what I was doing and had another string ready just after I finished mine. So I fixed the other piece of wood shaving and adding notches.
The armor was finished and Hakuu put it on. Everyone touched and looked at the armor and then I surprised everyone when I jabbed Hakuu with a stabir and all that happened was Hakuu grunted and took a step back. He touched where I had stuck him with the stabir and then began to laugh. Gogon did not like my demonstration without giving warning first. I said that seeing it work without knowing was more impressive. Wenok and Hakuu both agreed with me but Wenok said I should have at least told Gogon. I apologized to everyone and said I would not do anything like that again.
Now with the arrows ready and both bows ready I demonstrated the power and accuracy of the bow. I had Hakuu take the armor off and had him hang it over a low branch just at the edge of the village about 30 paces away. When he was back next to me and everyone was watching I drew the first arrow aimed and let it fly. It struck the armor in the center and to everyone’s shock passed through both sides and almost made it all the way through. There was maybe two inches from the armor to the fletching still sticking out the front.
Gogon asked what good armor was if this arrow could pass through it. I asked who else had bows and arrows other than my people who were very far away. Then I added that other things could be used instead of hides to make armor that would stop arrows, I had just used what was easiest to make for the demonstration. Gogon nodded and apologized himself. To start every protector needs armor but to put two pieces of hide on each side instead of one. Fueb and Juwoo were in charge of this task and began gathering women as they moved off.
Ayalla, Rooka the other female knapper and Daywa were in charge of arrow making. Zebo the male knapper would continue to make blades and spear tips. He had been working with several of the young children who were big enough to knap so he had plenty of helpers.
Two men who were not big enough or fit enough to be protectors asked to make the bows and were given the task by Gogon. He told me they were both good workers with wood tasks.
The tip of the arrow had chipped slightly but was still usable and I now had three arrows to use if needed. I would have 20 by the end of the day and Juwoo made a quiver for me without me having to explain what it was. I hugged her a hug like I had given Fueb. I thought nothing of this but it was observed by Eble, Gogon, Wenok and Etla.
That evening during dinner Gogon and Eble asked if I was seeking more mates. I was shocked at the question and said so. Then after looking at each other Eble said that a male that can provide for more than one mate is rare but does happen sometimes. So having two mates is not unheard of and allowed in that case. Gogon began to explain at that point that it was obvious I could provide for many mates and even protect them better than any other male could. So if I wanted more mates I would be allowed.
I asked what brought this discussion now and both said at the same time, “you grabbed Fueb and Juwoo and pulled them to you.” I asked if this was their custom and was told that it was not a custom but when a male or female seeks to mate with someone they can do this to let them know their interest.
I asked if I did not mate with either of them would it be a bad thing. Gogon shrugged and Eble nodded YES. I felt bad and said that I would mate with both of them if Etla and Laya were agreeable and could get along with both.
Etla walked up with both Fueb and Juwoo and said that she had asked both if they wanted to mate with me and they both were very much interested in becoming my mates. Etla said that she was friends with Fueb already and knew Juwoo well also. She did not have an issue with them joining our family. Then she added that Laya had told her that even though I treat her like a mate she is still my slave.
I interrupted saying servant not slave.
Nodding her understanding and correcting her statement by saying Laya said that as my servant she will obey and accept anything I say or ask. So both should become my mates.
Gogon stood and yelled, “Fueb mate of Deke!” Everyone stopped what they were doing or saying looked up and shouted “Fueb mate of Deke!” then Gogon yelled, “Juwoo mate of Deke!” there was a slight pause as everyone recognized the importance of how many mates I now had and finally shouted, “Juwoo mate of Deke!” then all the women rushed to congratulate the two new mates. Fueb had been living in the single female tents and Juwoo had her own tent there as she collected all the hides in her tent. So they both just moved their personal belongings to my tent with Etla’s help.
As I suspected both were virgins so I did the same thing as with Laya and Etla. When it was time for bed Fueb and Juwoo undressed as Etla did and all three knelt on the hides watching me as I undressed. Then I moved between Fueb and Juwoo and laid down having one on each side lay next to me and Etla on the outside next to Fueb who she knew more readily. I could see the relief in both their eyes when they realized I was doing what I had done with Etla. I suspected she had told in exaggerated detail what we did our first night together.
The next morning after breakfast I was busy moving around the different projects making sure everything was done correctly. By the end of that day we had 15 bows five of the stronger wood and ten of the other wood. Half of the protectors had armor. What shocked me was there were 70 arrows made another 50 shafts ready and more fletching that was needed for 100 arrows. The issue was arrowheads the reason there were only 70 arrows was that was all the arrowheads that would work.
Ayalla and Rooka were working to make arrowheads two at a time as each was working on one. I then demonstrated the rapid process of smashing a large chunk of flint with a big rock a couple of times until there were many small pieces that would be easier to shape into arrowhead and even a few pieces that were perfect as they were for arrowheads.
Ayalla took a big rock and smashed a chunk of obsidian but since flint is stronger the obsidian shattered into a lot more pieces that would work for arrowheads.
