At the kitchen table on Sunday morning, an underlying tension hung in the air as Juno and her mother ate breakfast. Sitting across from one another, the two were cordial, but there was hardly any talking. Nervous glances caught the other one staring at them, only for those eyes to dart away when caught. The uncomfortable tension built and built until Juno’s mother reached her breaking point. She shoved her plate aside and slammed both hands on the table so hard the plates and silverware rattled.

“For heaven’s sake, you’re killing me,” her mother said. “How did it go last night?”

Juno’s eyes filled with sadness. “It was awful. I hate him! We’re through!”

“You broke up with Davy?” her mother asked, incredulously.

“I didn’t tell him, but yeah, I’m done with him.”

Her stunned mother gawked at Juno. “What happened?”

“He’s a jerk. All he thinks about is himself. I don’t think he really loves me.”

“Did you two do it?”

“Ma! Jeez! How could you ask that? But, no, not even close. Davy didn’t listen to anything I said. He didn’t even talk to me first.”

“Talk?”

“Yeah, talk to me before he started kissing and grabbing.”

“Did you always talk first?”

Juno rolled her eyes, but then she looked up and to the left before focusing on her mother’s face. “No, I guess not,” she said almost to herself.

“Then why was it a problem last night?”

“Because I didn’t know about that before I was with Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson talked to me. He made me feel like he cared about me. Davy never did. And Mr. Wilson doesn’t even love me. Davy said he does. And me and Mr. Wilson aren’t girlfriend/boyfriend, yet he made me feel more like a girlfriend than Davy ever did.”

“Oh, I see,” her mother said softly while drumming her fingers on the tabletop.

“Ma?”

“What?”

“What if I never fall in love?”

“Oh, honey, you’re young. Don’t worry about that. Davy was just your first boyfriend. The right boy will show up in the most unexpected place. That’s the way love is.”

“It didn’t happen to you.”

“I was a dumb girl who made a mistake. You’re a lot smarter than I was at your age.”

“I have you to thank for that. And I guess Mr. Wilson, too.”

“Yes Dennis, I mean Mr. Wilson, is special.”

“Oh, Ma, you really liked being with him, didn’t you? I’m so sorry I screwed that up for you.”

Her mother sighed. “He was way too young for me anyway. I don’t even know what he saw in an old hag like me.”

“I guess you were good in bed.”

Her mother’s eyes opened wide and her jaw dropped. “Juno Mason! I can’t believe you said that!”

Juno blushed. “I’m sorry. It just came out.”

Her mother giggled. “Well, at least I’m good at something. Too bad I can’t make money at it.”

Juno was about to say something when her mother leaned forward and wagged an accusing finger at her.

“Don’t you dare say it!” her mother shouted.

The two stared at each other for a good twenty seconds before both burst out laughing.

The breakup with Davy was hard on Juno. When not in school, she spent most of her time in her bedroom, depressed and moping. It didn’t help that Lizzy constantly babbled about Troy Beckett, the love of her life, both in school and on the phone when they were home. And the Friday nights she slept over at Lizzy’s were almost unbearable. Not only was Lizzy constantly gushing over her boyfriend, but he kept calling while Juno was there and she had to listen and watch Lizzy glow.

What took Juno’s mind off her now miserable life was the upcoming final exams she needed to take before Christmas break and the end of the fall semester. The studying was a savior. Although, for the first time in her life, she wasn’t looking forward to Christmas break. What was she going to do without the distraction of school? Lizzy was probably going to spend all her time with family and her new boyfriend. Juno had no family to spend time with. And no boyfriend.

One day at school, a depressed Juno was heading to the cafeteria with her head down and shoulders slumped when she was tapped on the shoulder from behind. She stopped and spun around. Juno gasped. It was Mr. Wilson. Since that weekend at his house, she had dreaded bumping into him at school and had even turned and fled the times she had spotted him in the halls. And now here he was, standing right in front of her. But her anxiety vanished when she saw his warm smile. She had feared he would be staring at her tits, remembering what they looked like naked, or lower, having seen that as well, but to her relief his eyes were locked on hers.

“How have you been?” Mr. Wilson asked. “I haven’t seen you around.”

“I’m fine.”

Mr. Wilson rubbed his chin with his thumb and forefinger. “Hmm, that didn’t sound like you are fine. Having trouble with your boyfriend?”

“We broke up.”
