The late afternoon already hung heavy over Madison’s apartment. The light was low, a dull gray filtered through the half-closed shutters. She had been ready for a while, sitting on the edge of the couch with the bag at her feet, when the knocks shook the door.
She stood. Opened it.
Alan was standing there on the landing, hands buried in the pockets of his jeans, shoulders held a little too high. He tried a smile.
“Hello...”
“Hi.”
He laughed. A nervous laugh, too short, that didn’t fit his voice.
“This reminds me of last time...”
Madison looked away for a second. Heat rose to her cheeks. She answered lower, almost to herself: “This time ... it’s different.”
Alan looked at her. Really looked. There was something new in the way she held herself, a fragile kind of calm, as if she had already accepted what was coming and no longer needed to fight against it.
He frowned slightly, surprised. Then his gaze slid to the bag at her feet.
“Why do you have a bag?”
She shrugged one shoulder, almost detached.
“Spare clothes ... just in case.”
They stared at each other. The silence stretched, heavy, sticky. Alan was the first to break it, his voice even lower: “So ... we’re really going to...?”
He didn’t wait for her answer. He pushed on, as if he needed to glue the words together so they would hold: “You remember you made me promise that nothing would change between us?”
Madison turned away. A small, almost automatic movement. She stared at the wall for a moment, her throat tight.
“I’m the one who didn’t keep the promise...”
She moved toward the entryway. In that instant Alan gently caught her shoulder. His fingers stayed there, light, but he felt something strange under his palm right away. A tension. A tremor.
“Madi ... are you sure you’re okay?”
He looked at her more carefully. She was trembling. Barely. But enough to see it.
“Uh— do you want me to—”
“Stop, Alan ... it’s fine ... I’m just ... stressed, okay?”
He took his hand away. Slowly. As if he were afraid of breaking something even more fragile.
They both ended up on the landing. The door closed behind them with a soft click. Alan stood still for a moment, keys already in his hand. Then he asked, without looking at her directly: “And after? Is this going to be the last time we...?”
Madison turned her head toward him. Their eyes met. She said nothing. Not a word. Just that look, loaded with everything she didn’t dare put into words.
He didn’t push.
They went down in silence. Alan got behind the wheel. Madison settled beside him, the bag on her lap, hands clenched over it. The car started. He drove them to a hotel on the outskirts of the city, far from any eyes, far from everything they knew.
A few moments later Alan stood at the motel counter. He cleared his throat, louder than he’d meant to, before asking for a room for the night.
His voice sounded wrong—too polite, too tight.
The person behind the desk turned to take a key. Then, before handing it over, they looked the two of them over.
Slowly. Head to toe.
Madison felt the gaze slide across her skin like a cold hand. Alan clenched his jaw. They waited for a comment, a remark, anything. Nothing came.
Just the silence, and the key changing hands.
Alan paid. Then they left the lobby and walked the length of the building to the room. Direct outside access. Right then Alan prayed inwardly not to run into anyone he knew. No one from campus. No one from their town. No one.
They opened the door.
The room still smelled faintly of cigarette smoke beneath the cheap perfume that clung to the curtains.
It was ... fairly clean. A basic room. Double bed, air conditioning already humming, heavy curtains, a single window looking out on the parking lot.
Alan shut the door behind them. He looked at Madison for a second, then asked, voice low: “You want to check if there’s any cameras...?”
She shook her head. No. Impossible that she’d been through here before them. Impossible.
Alan sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress was more comfortable than it looked. He swallowed hard, teeth clenched.
Then Madison let out a short, startled cry. Alan’s head snapped up.
“Shit! Almost forgot ... We probably need to give him the address...”
He laughed. A strained, nervous laugh that fit nothing. Madison already had her phone out. Message sent. The contract—or whatever pretended to be one—lay on the bed ready to be signed. A sheet folded in half, a pen beside it.
They waited.
Silence settled, thick. The drone of the AC covered the sound of their breathing, a little too fast, a little too uneven. Alan tried not to look at the contract. Madison didn’t either. Their eyes met now and then, then fled at once.
He tried to lighten the air. Voice a little too light, almost forced: “So ... what lingerie did you put on this time?”
Madison turned toward him, cheeks already flushed.
“Alan!”
He laughed for real this time. A genuine laugh, even if it stayed nervous.
“Come on, ease up ... Before long ... we’ll all be naked in here...”
She didn’t answer. She crossed her arms, gaze slipping away.
Alan watched her a moment longer. Then he asked, lower, more serious: “Why are you ... I mean ... the last times, at your parents’ ... you were more ... open. Calmer...”
Madison let out a small, almost incredulous laugh. She looked at him at last. Directly.
“I don’t know ... Maybe because we’re really going to do it this time...”
The words landed. Alan heard them. And right away something tightened low in his gut. His cock hardened at once, pressing against the denim of his jeans. He added, voice rough: “You’re going to let me...?”
She looked at him. One second. Then: “Fuck me? Yeah...”
And she crossed her arms tighter, turning toward the window. The silence fell again. Denser still.
Alan stayed seated on the edge of the bed, legs slightly spread, trying to hide the erection that still strained against his jeans. He could feel that, somewhere, Madison felt the same thing. She wanted it just as badly. But she refused to show it. She remained standing by the window, arms crossed, gaze lost somewhere between the curtains and the parking lot.
Alan spoke first, voice a little rough: “She shouldn’t be much longer now...”
