A few days had passed. Two, maybe three. Time had slipped past almost without notice ... The video, the contract, the threesome plan ... all of it still hung there, present yet distant.
The cafeteria was packed to bursting, loud, thick with the smell of fries and coffee that was too strong. Their usual table by the glass walls was already taken. Larry, Sean, Bella, Alan and Madison. Trays clattered, conversations overlapped.
Larry set down his sandwich and shook his head, laughing.
“Last night I saw Kevin try to drain a whole bottle on a challenge. The guy ended up on his knees in the bathroom swearing he’d never touch another drop. Except he started again ten minutes later, hahaha.”
They all cracked up. Sean turned to Madison.
“Yeah, and you, Madi, last time? You were completely wasted. I swear I’ve never seen anyone so far gone. It was like you were speaking a whole other language.”
They laughed harder. Madison flipped them off without even lifting her head from her tray.
“Go fuck yourselves.”
Larry piled on, even though he hadn’t been at the party, with that smile a little too wide that cut.
“I heard the whole story. We could’ve stuck an ‘out of order’ sign right on your forehead. Seriously.”
Alan lifted his eyes slightly. He had barely spoken since they sat down. His voice came out calm, almost distracted, but sharp.
“Maybe you could change the record for a minute.”
The silence was short, but clean. Larry blinked, surprised. Sean stopped laughing. Bella glanced between them. Everyone got it. Alan never defended Madison. Never like that. Larry forced a smile to cover the awkwardness.
“Since when do you take your sister’s side? You two usually spend the whole time at each other’s throats.”
Alan didn’t smile. He just gave a slight shrug, like it was nothing.
“It’s just ... enough.”
The group stayed a second too long in that uncomfortable quiet. Alan felt the weight of the stares and shifted the subject.
“By the way, there’s a party at the engineering guys’ place Saturday. You in or not?”
Conversation started up again, a little forced at first. They talked about classes, midterms coming up, girls Larry had tried to hit on without success. The laughter came back gradually, but something tense still sat under the surface.
Madison looked at Alan for a second. Surprised. Touched. And something else, more unsettled, that she didn’t like at all. She looked away almost at once.
A little later Larry cleared his throat and leaned toward Madi, like he was trying to make up for it.
“Madi ... there’s a guy in my law class. Aidan. He asked for your number. He was into you. Like, really. Just telling you ... Do whatever you want with the info...”
Madison raised an eyebrow, a polite smile on her lips.
“What’s he like?”
“Decent. Not a psycho. Just ... normal.”
“Uh ... Okay ... Thanks.”
She checked the time, picked up her tray and stood.
“I’ve got swim practice. Later.”
She left without looking back. Alan watched her until she disappeared behind the glass doors. The thought of that guy, Aidan, looking at her like a prize to claim ... a sharp jab of jealousy cut through his gut, clear and absurd. He shook it off with a toss of his head and looked back at his sandwich. The taste had gone flat.
That same evening, still on campus.
Alan had waited for her outside her last class, as planned.
Madison came out last, bag over her shoulder, face still a little drawn from the day. They barely exchanged looks as they walked. Just enough to pass for normal.
They didn’t go to either of their places. Instead they chose a campus café, one of the ones that stayed open late, with tables set a little apart in the back. The real reason, they hadn’t said out loud: the fear that it would go too far. At one of their places the walls would be too close, too dangerous. Here at least there were people around. Students, noise, accidental witnesses.
They sat across from each other. Madison ordered tea, Alan black coffee. Both kept their hands wrapped around their cups like it might hold them in place. They weren’t used to this—just the two of them, without some family excuse or emergency. And yet they still had to go over the last details for the meeting with Rebecah.
Madison spoke first. Cheeks already a little flushed.
“Why did you defend me earlier in the cafeteria? It wasn’t necessary...”
Alan scratched the back of his neck, uncomfortable. His eyes stayed fixed on his cup.
“It just came out. I don’t know.”
She shook her head slightly.
“They can’t start thinking something’s going on ... Seriously.”
Alan looked up, a half-smile at the corner of his mouth, almost challenging.
“Oh yeah? Because something is going on between us?”
Madison blushed harder. She didn’t answer. She only cleared her throat, eyes down, fingers tight around her cup.
Alan added, lower:
“And coming here wasn’t exactly smart either. If we run into one of the guys...”
She jerked her head up. She hadn’t realized. The café had been her idea. And now she saw the problem ... it would look strange. Nothing odd at first glance for a brother and sister, but not for them—they’d never made a habit of going out like this together ... It would draw comments from their friends...
A small panic cut through her gut.
Alan opened his mouth to speak, but she cut him off at once.
“We’re not going to your place. Or mine. Okay?”
He rolled his eyes, a forced laugh at the edge of his lips.
“Pfff ... why don’t you want to, really? Scared something might happen?”
Madison shrugged. A vague gesture, but clear. Yes.
Alan looked at her for a moment, half-amused, half-irritated.
“I can control myself, you know. Don’t push it.”
She held his gaze then. Long. Her eyes no longer looking away. When she spoke it was a whisper, almost too low to hear.
