The latch of the door snapped open with a sharp crack, and Rebecah’s voice swept into the apartment, light and almost singing.
“Oh, it’s open ... Anyone here?”
The words died in her throat. She stopped dead on the threshold, her bag sliding down her arm, her eyes suddenly huge.
In the middle of the living room, Madison was stumbling off the couch, her legs bare, panties still in place but the rest of her body completely exposed. Her hands were shaking so hard it took her several long seconds to snatch the crumpled t-shirt from the floor — hers or Alan’s, she couldn’t even tell anymore. She pulled it on in a frantic rush, the fabric clinging to her still-damp skin, still marked by everything they had just done together. Her hair fell forward over her face, her cheeks already flushed and burning.
Beside her, Alan stood rigid. Bare-chested. Jeans half-unbuttoned. He didn’t move. He just stared at Rebecah, his face shut tight, unreadable, as though everything raging inside him refused to surface on his features.
Rebecah blinked. Once. Twice. The realization hit her all at once.
“Oh shit ... don’t tell me you two—”
She broke off. A laugh burst out of her. Brutal. Uncontrollable.
“No fucking way! Seriously?!”
She couldn’t stop. The laughter racked her shoulders, stole her breath. It was too much. Too fucked up. Too perfect to be anything but real. She clamped a hand over her mouth, but the sound kept spilling out, high and almost hysterical.
It all unraveled fast after that.
A choked sob tore from Madison’s throat. She was crying already. The tears were falling before she’d even finished yanking the t-shirt down over her thighs. She stood there next to the couch, arms locked around her own body, as if she could still make herself disappear.
“Wait ... you were about to...?!” she whimpered, her voice cracking. “No ... this can’t be happening...”
Alan let out a sigh. A deep, heavy sound from the bottom of his chest. Shame. Anger. Something blacker underneath.
Rebecah, still shaking with laughter, pushed on, her voice climbing higher: “Alan? Does Madi even know?! Don’t tell me you told her ... Oh fuck it, who gives a shit! How long have you two been—?!”
“STOP! SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!”
Alan’s voice exploded. He stepped forward, then again, planting himself squarely in front of Madison. His broad frame became a wall. He was shielding her. As if Rebecah standing there was enough to pose a physical threat.
Rebecah raised both hands, palms out, but her grin didn’t waver.
“Easy, calm down! I’ve got every right to be shocked ... You’ve gotta admit, this is a lot to walk in on.”
She broke into fresh laughter, louder this time, sharper, cutting deeper.
Madison folded in on herself. The sobs were wracking her without mercy now. She was crying in earnest. Rebecah wasn’t just some intruder anymore. She was living proof of what they had done. The taboo, the guilt, the forbidden hunger — all of it crystallized in that amused stare, in the laughter bouncing off the walls. Madison felt her skin burning. Like she was being stripped bare all over again. Judged. Broken open.
“I’m sorry ... sorry ... I ... fuck, why didn’t you say anything, Alan?!” she sobbed, the words barely making it out between gasps.
Then louder, almost a hoarse scream: “Get the fuck out of our lives, you piece of shit!”
Rebecah sucked in a breath through her teeth, sounding almost impressed.
“Wow, wow ... okay, message received ... but that’s not happening, not after what I just walked in on...”
She kept watching them. Her eyes roamed over Madison’s half-dressed body, Alan’s rigid stance, the wrecked couch behind them. She was savoring every second. Taking her time.
Madison shook. Alan didn’t shift an inch, rooted in front of her like a living shield. His breathing was tight and fast. He had to act. Now. There was no choice left.
“The video,” he said finally, voice low.
Rebecah arched an eyebrow, looking almost intrigued.
“Hmm?”
Alan ground his teeth.
“You delete it. Or I’m going to the cops.”
The words landed heavy in the room. He’d played his final card. Backed right up against the wall.
Silence stretched out. Long. Too long. Rebecah looked between them, slow and deliberate, as if measuring the exact weight of what she’d heard. Her face changed. The surprise faded into something colder. More calculating.
Then she burst out laughing.
A full, bright laugh that filled the whole apartment and didn’t seem like it was ever going to end.
Rebecah’s laughter finally sputtered out, but it left a thick, almost viscous silence in its wake. Madison was crying harder now. The sobs tore through her chest, shook her shoulders, stole her breath. She had slumped against the back of the couch, the t-shirt twisted crookedly over her still-warm skin, her bare thighs trembling faintly. Every fresh tear seemed to drive home just how exposed she was — to Rebecah, to Alan, to herself.
She was completely unmoored. More than ever. As if the other woman’s laughter had finally cracked something fragile inside her, something she had barely managed to hold together since the scene began.
Rebecah cleared her throat. A short, dry sound, like she was forcing herself back into control. She stepped further into the room and closed the door behind her with an almost gentle pull. Her face shifted. She lowered her voice, slipping into a tone that tried to sound soothing, almost maternal.
“Madi, sweetheart ... you’re breaking my heart, stop ... I’m not going to ... you two have nothing to worry about, for fuck’s sake!”
Alan exploded.
“Liar!” he shouted, voice cracking with rage and panic.
“You’re nothing but a fucking liar!”
Rebecah sighed, exasperated but still perfectly in control of herself. She shrugged.
“Stop it, Alan ... We’ve already been over this. What exactly are you going to tell the police, huh?”
He spat the words like they had been scorching his tongue the entire time.
“I HAVE YOUR CONFESSION!”
The silence that followed was brief but heavy. Rebecah narrowed her eyes, head tilted slightly, as if she hadn’t quite heard him right.
“What? You ... recorded me?”
Alan nodded, quick and almost feverish.
“Yeah.”
She let out a small laugh, cutting it short by biting her lower lip.
Then she fixed him with a cruel tenderness that hurt far more than her laughter ever had.
“Alan, darling ... that little recording of yours is worthless.”
She leaned back against the armchair, perfectly relaxed, as if she owned the place.
“A recording taken in the middle of the act ... without my knowledge ... it’s worth nothing in court, for fuck’s sake. The evidence is inadmissible. It’s ... shit, how do I put this simply?”
She gave a soft, almost private chuckle before continuing, her voice calmer now, almost pedagogical, like she was spelling something obvious out for a slow child.
“Recording someone without them knowing is illegal. It’s a violation of privacy. And even if you run straight to the station with it, the cops or a judge will almost certainly throw it out because it was obtained through unfair means. That’s what we call poisoned evidence. The justice system doesn’t like that.
And even if by some miracle they decided to keep it, you could end up in trouble yourself for making the recording in the first place.”
“ ... my father is a very well-known lawyer, as you know perfectly well. But even without that, no lawyer worth a damn is going to bother taking your recording seriously. It won’t hold up for two seconds. It’s bullshit. It won’t stand. Not ever.”
Each sentence dropped slowly, with surgical precision. Madison was still crying, but quieter now, her body shaken only by leftover hiccups. She looked like a child who had just been struck without understanding why.
