The breakfast stretched on in an unusual silence, broken only by the clink of cutlery and the distant clatter of dishes in the sink. Their mother stood by the table, watching them in turn with that sharp gaze she always had when she sensed something was off. She set down her tea cup, crossed her arms, and let out in a soft, almost amused voice:
“You two are awfully quiet ... Reminds me of when you used to cook up some scheme together, back in the day.”
Alan gave a nervous little chuckle, head bowed over his bowl of cereal. He kept fiddling with his spoon without really eating.
“Huh? No, ahah ... not at all.”
Their mother smiled, a tender smile that deepened the lines around her eyes.
“Seeing you like this ... it really gets to me. Knowing you look out for each other like that. Are you sure you don’t want to stay a little longer? We could—”
“No, Mom. We’ve got work tomorrow,” Madison cut in before she could finish. Her voice came out a little too quick, a little too sharp.
Their mother raised her eyebrows, surprised, then nodded with a small, resigned “Okay ... okay...” She picked up her dish towel, cast one last look at her two children, and left the room without pushing further. The kitchen door clicked softly shut behind her.
The silence settled back in, heavier than before. Madison lifted her eyes and met Alan’s gaze. He was staring. Straight at her. Like he was searching her face for something he didn’t dare name. She rolled her eyes, the gesture irritated, bordering on exasperation, and muttered without raising her voice:
“Stop staring at me like that.”
Alan looked away. He pushed his chair back.
“We heading out or what?”
Madison stayed put for a moment, palms flat on the table, as if she were still weighing her answer. Then she nodded.
“Yeah ... I should probably get some studying done. I’m way behind on my classes these days...”
Alan nodded without a word. They stood up together. Clearing the table was mechanical: bowls, plates, opening the dishwasher. But with every movement they skirted around each other, bodies grazing. A shoulder pressing into a shoulder. A forearm sliding against skin. The heat of their bodies meeting in brief, involuntary sparks. No one said anything. The tension was there, thick and unspoken, but they let it hang without naming it.
A few minutes later, after rushed goodbyes to their parents, they were back in the car. The road to campus stretched ahead, straight and monotonous. Alan drove. Madison stared out the window, arms crossed.
The silence lasted a few minutes. Then Madison cleared her throat, hesitant.
“Hm ... I think we need to—”
“Talk, yeah,” Alan finished at the same time.
He kept his eyes on the road, but his voice was lighter than it had been since yesterday. Less strained. Like they’d both, without saying it, found a bit of distance overnight.
Madison let out a slow breath.
“We fucked.”
Alan didn’t react right away. He gave a slight shrug, a gesture meant to be casual but falling short. His ears flushed a little.
“Hmm ... well ... we didn’t really...”
“Stop,” Madison cut him off. “You know what I mean...”
She’d said it without aggression. More like a simple statement. Alan glanced her way for just a second before turning back to the road.
“Yeah,” he murmured.
Madison let out another slow breath, not really exasperated this time, just ... tired of lying to herself.
“I can barely wrap my head around it. But ... it feels less weird than before.”
She could feel it. That shift. Last night everything had still been too raw, too close. Now there was a little space. Not much. But enough for her to name things without her voice shaking as much.
Alan kept his eyes forward. He tried for a calm, almost reasonable tone.
“That’s what I was saying last night ... I wanted it. You did too. End of story.”
Madison let out a short, incredulous laugh, almost mocking.
“You say it like it’s nothing.”
“Well, yeah, maybe we should just tell the guys, huh? ‘Hey guys, guess what—?’”
She didn’t finish. The absurdity of the idea hit them both at once. They started laughing. First a strained, forced laugh, like they were trying to bleed off the tension. Then, against all odds, the laughter turned real. Freer. Not happy, exactly, but ... liberating. Like they were finally touching something they’d been holding back for hours.
Alan shook his head, still smiling faintly.
“Yeah ... I’m not saying it’s normal, okay? Just ... maybe we don’t have to beat ourselves up about it. We didn’t hurt anyone, right?”
Madison didn’t answer right away. She gave a soft grunt, gaze drifting back to the window. But she didn’t look angry anymore. Just ... thoughtful.
Alan went on, quieter now, almost to himself:
“We even pleasured each other, if I’m being honest.”
Madison’s fist came down on his shoulder, not hard, but enough to make him flinch.
“Ow!”
“Shut up, idiot!”
And they really laughed. A laugh that rose up and filled the car, shaking them both without either being able to hold it back. A stupid, nervous laugh, but genuine. The kind that comes when you’ve held everything in too long and something finally gives way.
The silence that followed wasn’t quite the same.
Madison kept her eyes on the road for a moment, then changed the subject in a lighter voice.
“Hey ... did you touch the money?”
Alan understood immediately what she meant. He shook his head without looking at her.
“No. I ... well, no. What about you?”
She shrugged.
“I put everything on bitcoin.”
He turned his head toward her, surprised, a curious smile on his lips.
“Huh?”
Madison laughed.
“Nah, I’m kidding ... me neither.”
She grew serious again almost immediately. Her smile faded.
“But I was thinking ... buying a car. With my share.”
She sighed, as if the idea already weighed on her.
“Did you tell Dad about your car?”
Madison frowned.
“No ... not Mom either. I didn’t want to stress them out with it.”
The silence returned, thicker. Alan reached for the center console to put on some music. Madison reacted before he could touch the button: she moved her hand and placed it on his to stop him.
Just a brush. Her fingers slid over the back of his hand, warm, fleeting.
Both of them froze for a second.
Neither commented. But something short-circuited. A glitch.
Madison yanked her hand back like she’d been burned. She crossed her arms over her chest.
“Leave it ... No music. We really need to talk...”
Alan nodded, jaw a little tight.
“Okay ... okay.”
“Hmm ... What do we do once we’re back on campus? We ... stop?”
Alan didn’t answer right away. He kept his eyes on the road, face impassive. Stoic. Like he was weighing every word before letting it out.
Madison insisted, firmer:
“I’m serious, Alan. This can’t keep going like this. I think we need to put a stop to it. Before it spirals even more...”
She turned her head toward him.
“Alan?”
He finally nodded, in a neutral voice.
“Yeah.”
“Yeah?”
He let out a short, joyless laugh and shook his head.
“Pfff ... this is completely insane, Madi. Yeah. We have to stop. It’s bullshit. You’re ... my big sister, for fuck’s sake...”
She smiled despite herself, a weak, almost sad smile.
But Alan didn’t stop there. His voice changed, became rawer, almost desperate.
“But ... how the fuck am I supposed to forget that I ate your ass last night?!”
“Alan! What the fuck!” she exclaimed, shocked, turning fully toward him.
