Pundits rated the Eagles a 9.5 point underdog to the Rams, who lost in the NFC Championship Game last January. The Eagles lost the coin toss and got the ball first. Ryan Reynolds’ scripted first plays worked to perfection, keeping the Rams defense guessing. Aiden executed the plan nearly perfectly, driving his team down the field and into the end zone on the ninth play, where he found Trenton Connelly in the back of the end zone, near the goal posts.
The playoff-experienced Rams did not blink an eye. They executed a near textbook perfect drive in response, pushing down the field against aggressive and obstinate opposition. The Eagles defense stiffened when the Rams pushed into the red zone (within 20 yards of the goal line). All drive, the Eagles linemen were close to the QB, but could not bring him down for a sack. The pressure finally got the Rams offensive line. False start, back up five yards. On the next play, Monroe Duckworth got home and sacked the QB for an eight yard loss. On third down, the QB had to flee to the right, being chased by Michael Greene and Monroe Duckworth. He managed to fling the ball to the sideline before the two big linemen flattened him to the ground. The Rams kicked a 47 yard field goal to lessen the deficit to the Eagles to 7-3.
The game started off with the two offenses moving the ball easily up and down the field. Both defenses adjusted and tightened up. A bunch of short drives finishing with punts ensued. No one scored again until late in the first half.
A promising Eagles drive ended with an Anderson to Weaver pass where the Rams d-back covering Colin, made an acrobatic leap and yanked the ball way from Weaver. He raced downfield dodging linemen. Colin managed to run him down and drop him at the Eagles 3 yard line. The damage was done. The Rams jammed the ball into the end zone to take a 10-7 lead.
0:55 second remained in the half. The Rams chose to play prevent defense. D-backs and linebackers lined up 12-15 yards from the line of scrimmage. Aiden Anderson cooly took what the defense gave him, hitting receivers for ten to fifteen yards a completion. Four plays later, Aiden spiked the ball down to leave 0:02 seconds on the clock at the Rams 36 yard line. Nick Gordon came in and nailed the 53 yard field goal. Score: Eagles-10, Rams-10
Kyle, Ryan and Ed made a few adjustments to the game plan at halftime. The Eagles defense was fired up as the second half started. They stonewalled the Rams, forcing a punt after three ineffective plays. The Eagles the ball on the their own 27 yard line. Anderson and the offense marched straight down the field, picking up 52 yards on seven plays. Disaster struck on the next play. It was a medium depth, sideline throw to Aaron Whitehead. The d-back played with outside leverage, in other words, he stayed between the receiver and the sideline. Properly, Aaron broke towards the center of the field to get open. Aiden Anderson missed the read and threw the ball to the sideline as originally planned. The cornerback snagged the ball and sprinted about fifteen yards before Aaron Cain took him down.
Kyle could only shake his head. This was one the prices you paid for having a quarterback in his first year as a starter. “We’ll go over this Monday with Aiden, boss ... again,” Ed commented on the radio. A promising scoring opportunity was wasted, due to inexperience. Thankfully, the defense had the offense’s back. The Rams couldn’t move the ball and were forced to punt back to the Eagles.
The defenses predominated in the third quarter. Late in the third quarter, the Rams managed to get close enough to try a 55 yard field goal. Their kicker drilled it through the middle of the uprights, making it with half a dozen yards to spare. Score: Rams-13, Eagles-10
The fourth quarter began with the Eagles offense going three plays and punting back to the Rams. Despite pressure from the defensive line, the Rams marched down the field. On the sixth play, Sean Watkins, the Eagles rookie right cornerback from Oregon State, outleaped a Rams receiver for an interception. He spun free of a half-hearted tackle attempt and skittered down the field for the end zone. The Rams QB took Watkins down inside the 10 yard line.
Aiden Anderson and the offense may have had trouble going seventy-five to eighty yards for a score, but they only needed three plays for Darrell Lee to run the ball in for a touchdown. Score: Eagle-17, Rams-13.
The Rams offense, despite the lackluster performance that afternoon, was undaunted. The pushed the ball down the field despite blitzes and tight pass coverage. The Eagles defense bent but did not break. The Rams kicked a thirty-seven-yard field goal to tighten the score to Eagles-17, Rams-16.
6:22 remained on the clock. Ryan Reynolds had the offense concentrate on running the ball, particularly to the right of the line, where Right Guard Erick Thompson and Right Tackle Marques Williams, both sixth-year players with tons of experience, blasted holes for Darrell Lee or Diego Walker to run through. The Eagles drive was thwarted first by a holding call and then by a false start call. Nick Gordon came in to try a 56 yard field goal. The ball flew wide right.
0:53 remained on the clock when the Rams got the ball at the Eagles 39 yard line. They had no timeouts. They had used them trying to keep time on the clock during the Eagles drive.
Coach C sent his four defensive linemen after the QB and kept the other seven d-backs deeper, three watching each sideline with Alan Jones playing centerfielder, ready to stop anyone catching passes in the center of the field.
The Rams QB calmly took what the Eagles didn’t cover, gaining seven, nine and eleven yards with three completions over the middle. 0:22 remained on the clock. Coach C sent Xavier Jones on a blitz. The QB rolled away from the blitz and fired the ball down the sideline, where Eagles cornerback, Marcus Davis, knocked the ball away. 0:16 remained. The QB took the snap, scanned the field and was forced to fire the ball to his tight end in the middle of the field. Alan Jones came flying up and blasted the tight end as he caught the ball, forcing it loose.
It was third down and ten yards to go with 0:10 left on the clock. Coach C shocked the Rams by blitzing both Xavier Jones and Demarcus Hunter. A lineman managed to block Xavier but Demarcus flew in untouched. The QB was forced to throw the ball away to avoid the sack and certainty of a loss. 0:05 remained on the clock.
The ball was on the Eagles 37 yard line. The Rams coach sent his kicking team out. A sixty-one yard field goal was a better chance at the win than to try a Hail Mary pass. The snap was clean, the hold good. The kicker struck the ball well. Everyone watched the flight of the ball ... a little to the left ... a little more to the left ... CLANG! The ball caromed into the upright.
‘FUCK!’ Kyle thought to himself as he watched the ball bounce off the upright and spin in for a successful field goal. Score: Rams-19, Eagles-17. Kyle was reminded of a saying he learned way back when he started football. Coach Caffrey always preached the football was funny shaped and would take odd bounces on you.
The Eagle defense played well. The offense ... well they were a work in progress. They should have won this game. Still, they went toe-to-toe with one of the better teams in the league and nearly pulled off a huge upset.
Kyle trudged across the field to shake hands with his counterpart and congratulate the Rams for their victory. Kyle greeted a few of the players and coaches he knew. He was heading for the visitors’ locker room when he heard a familiar voice call out, “Hey Bro, sorry about how the game ended.”
“Andy!” Kyle said as he turned to see his brother behind him, wearing khakis and a Rams polo. “I didn’t know you were coming to this game.”
“This came up unexpectedly,” Andrew replied. “I have a meeting tomorrow morning here in LA. I gave Stan [Kroenke, the Rams owner, ] a call and he invited me to watch the game from his box.”
“Well, I guess I can excuse you for the shirt,” Kyle said. “I know you own some nice midnight green polos that look much better than that ugly blue one you’re wearing.”
“I was a Ram for my whole professional career,” Andy countered. “I can’t wear enemy colors here in LA. I’ll get the green stuff out in three weeks when you guys play Pittsburgh.”
“Fair enough,” Kyle allowed. “How are things going?”
“Business is good,” Andrew said. “The 2032 version of our program is selling well. You can expect a nice check at the end of the year. Zoey and her boyfriend Linc are getting way too serious for my tastes.”
“I know how that is, bro,” Kyle laughed.
“Josh is psyched,” Andrew added. “He is doing his first Webelos camping trip next weekend at the council camporee. He can’t wait.”
“Is dad ready for the trip?” Kyle teased. “The ground gets kind of hard as you get older.”
“Said by the guy two years older than me who spent two weeks sleeping on the rocks at Philmont last summer.”
Kyle laughed. “I enjoyed the trip. Jessie, Danny, Penny and I are planning to go in 2033, when our crew does its next high adventure trip. You wait and see. You need to try Philmont when Josh turns 14.”
“I’ll see,” Andrew laughed. “I will do fine this coming weekend. I will have a nice, thick Therm-a-Rest mattress to sleep on.”
“I guess I’ll see you in three weeks,” Kyle said. “I’ve got to get back to the locker room and inspire these guys to do better next week.” Kyle chuckled. “That, and feed the press too.”
“I remember how it is,” Andrw replied. The two hugged and started to turn away. “Oh, hey, Kyle ... I am not sure if you heard yet. June 25th is set for the golf tournament. The Whitford Country Club signed the deal with our council earlier this week.”
“Sorry, I haven’t been much help on the golf tournament so far,” Kyle said.
“No problem,” Andrew said. “We will get you plugged into everything in January or February, when your season is over.”
The two brothers parted. Kyle had duties to perform before the red-eye flight back to Philly left LA. Andy had some schmoozing to do and then meet with some old teammates for dinner that evening.

“Hey, Jessie, do you have any free time today to work on ‘Laker Girls’?” Chris Rush asked as he walked up to her by her locker before classes started. “Laker Girls” was one the songs they had to perform in Spamalot in a month.
“I got a study hall sixth period,” Jessie suggested. “Are you free?”
“AP Physics that period,” Chris sighed. “Well, there’s always play practice. Maybe we could stay late to work on that song. I could drive you home when we’re done.”
“I drove today,” Jessie said. “I don’t need a ride home. We’ll work late.” She giggled. “It’s a date.”
“Cool!” Chris said before turning and walking away.
“What’s a date?” Jackson asked. Jessie started when she turned and saw him.
“Oh ... uh, Chris and I are working late after play practice on one of the songs in Spamalot.”
“I don’t trust him,” Jackson stated. “He’s pursuing you.”
“Chris already has a girlfriend, Addison Thomas,” Jessie responded. “We are just working on the play together. You’re my guy.” Jessie pulled Jackson’s head down and gave him a serious romantic kiss.
Both kids heard Mr. Johnson, the teacher who had the room nearest to Jessie’s locker, clear his throat. The two apologized and hurried off to their respective homerooms. Jackson was unsettled. God damned, fucking Chris Rush was after his girl. She was slipping away. He just knew it.
Tuesday, October 19, 2032 – Avon Grove High School, West Grove, PA
Danny, Mason, Logan and Nolan left lunch a couple minutes early so they could head over to the gym and change for their gym class the next period. They were heading down the hallway towards the gym, maybe a dozen feet from the doorway to the cafeteria.
“FUCK YOU, ASSHOLE!” somebody shouted from the other side of the cafeteria doors. The four teens stopped and turned just in time to see the doors flung open and Oliver Stirling come flying out the door backwards and sprawl to the floor a few feet from the surprised teens. Oliver was a ninth-grader like Danny and his friends, but none of them knew him well at all. They did not have any classes together and had no common friends.
“Stay the fuck away from my girlfriend!” Kai Woodrow bellowed as he stormed from the cafeteria after shoving Oliver. Abel and Bart Leon followed their buddy into the hallway.
“She said she dumped...” Oliver sputtered as the big senior stepped up to his prone body.
“THE FUCK SHE DID!” Kai snarled before lifting his left, work booted foot high and then stomping it into Oliver’s head. The hallway reverberated with a loud thud as Kai’s boot mashed Oliver’s head into the floor. Danny, Mason, Logan and Nolan stared in shock at what they just witnessed. There were maybe a dozen other kids in the hallway too. None moved a muscle in the face of these three notorious bullies.
“STAY AWAY FROM MY FUCKING GIRLFRIEND,” Kai punctuated this pronouncement with a swift kick to Oliver’s ribs. “She ain’t available to a fucking freshman like you.”
Bart kicked Oliver in the side too, adding, “Stay the fuck away from Allison.” Abel added another kick to the prone body on the floor.
Kai looked up and spotted Danny and his friends. “Hey, varsity quarterback. Stop staring, this ain’t no fucking business of yours. You’re just a freshman asshole like this shit here.” With that, Kai and his two buddies strode purposefully away from the scene, hoping not to be caught by a teacher.
Danny and his friends, as well as the other kids in the hallway just stared at the beaten kid lying on the floor, too shocked at the violence they just witnessed to do anything.
It took Danny about ten seconds to gather his wits. “Crap! We need to help,” Danny snapped. “Mason, go find a teacher or principal, now. Tell them to send the nurse too.” Mason, Logan and Nolan reacted to their buddy’s words.
“Logan and Nolan help me with first aid,” Danny said as he kneeled by the brutally beaten teen. Logan and Nolan kneeled too, but waited for Danny’s direction.
“Oliver, I’m Danny Martin,” Danny said as he looked down on the moaning boy. “I know first aid; may I help you?”
“Unhhh ... yeah...” Oliver moaned. He tried to sit up.
“Stay on the floor until help gets here,” Danny directed as he put his hands on the boy’s shoulders to keep him still. “Nolan ... shock. Logan, help me with bleeding.”
Danny stripped is shirt off as he evaluated Oliver. He had a big gash on his forehead, which was bleeding profusely. His nose was broken and bleeding. He had a split lip. His right eye was swelling shut. Logan stripped his shirt off too. Danny balled his shirt up and pressed it against Oliver’s forehead. Logan tried to stanch the bloody nose and lip.
Nolan, thinking quickly, sat down on the floor by Oliver’s feet. He lifted them up and slid his own legs under Oliver’s feet to raise them and force more blood to Oliver’s upper body, to treat for shock.
Mr. Winters, the CADD and Computers teacher, was first to show up. “What is going on?” he demanded as he looked at the two shirtless boys trying to stanch the blood from Oliver.
“Kai Woodrow, Abel Leon and Bart Leon beat this kid up,” Danny responded. Before Danny could say more, Vice Principal Brandt showed up.
“What is going here?” Mr. Brandt demanded. Mr. Winter quickly relayed the story to the principal. “Which way did those guys go?”
“That way,” Logan said, pointing down the hall that Kai, Abel and Bart where fled. Danny had both hands keeping pressure on Oliver’s head wound. Thankfully Mrs. Funck, the school nurse, arrived seconds later. She examined Oliver briefly before applying a handful of gauze pads to the wound Danny had been treating. Blood had mostly stopped flowing from Oliver’s nose, so both Danny and Logan stepped away to allow Mrs. Funck to look Oliver over.
“Mr. Winters, see if you can track down the three young men,” Mr. Brandt stated. “Grab a couple gym teachers on your way. You may want backup with those three.” Mr. Brandt motioned for Danny, Logan and Nolan to come over to him. He looked the three boys over and asked, “Names?”
“I’m Danny Martin.”
“You I know,” Mr. Brandt replied. He pointed at Logan.
“Logan Robertson,” Logan replied.
“Jackson’s brother?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And you?” Mr. Brandt asked, staring at Nolan.
“Nolan Phillips, sir.”
“Are you Joseph’s younger brother?” Mr. Brandt asked.
“Joey’s my cousin.”
“Tell me in detail what happened and exactly what you saw.” The three boys spent about five minutes describing the assault they witnessed. Mr. Brandt interrupted them a few times with questions. Emergency services showed up while the boys were being questioned. They took over from Mrs. Funck, checked over Oliver and put him on a gurney. Mr. Brandt spoke with the EMTs briefly before they wheeled Oliver out to their ambulance.
Mr. Brandt turned back to the three teens. “Danny and Logan, do you have other shirts somewhere at school? I could get you clean shirts from the lost and found box if you don’t.”
“I have a couple shirts in my locker in the gym room,” Danny offered.
“I could wear my gym T-shirt,” Logan added.
“Why don’t the three of you go clean up and get dressed in the locker room?” Mr. Brandt suggested. “Come back to the office when you are done. The three of you are witnesses to a criminal beating. I am certain the police will want to get statements from you today. I will get word to your afternoon teachers that you three will be missing class this afternoon.”
Danny, Logan and Nolan headed for the locker room to change and cleanup. Five minutes later they went to the school office. Two men in suits were there when they stepped into the office. Only the badges hung from the front pocket of their suit coats identified them as state policemen, presumably from the nearby Avondale Barracks.
“I am Lieutenant Fulton of the State Police,” the older, mid-forties gentleman, identified himself. “This is Detective Weller. I understand you young men witnessed the assault outside the cafeteria earlier.”
Danny, Logan, Nolan and Mason acknowledged that they had. “I would like to interview each of you and take statements about what you saw this afternoon ... with one of your parents present when the interview is done. Can you arrange for a parent to come over to the Avondale Barracks?”
“You can use a school phone to call them, of necessary,” Mr. Brandt interjected. Of course, it is 2032 and they’re all high school kids now. The four pulled cell phones out of their pockets and called a parent.
“Danny, what is up?” Penny asked when Danny reached her.
“A state policeman wants you to come over to the Avondale Barracks so they can interview me,” Danny replied.
“State police barracks?” Penny gasped. “Are you alright? Are you in trouble?”
“I’m fine, Mom,” Danny replied. “I was a witness to a kid getting beat up at lunch time. The police want you there when they interview me.”
“Avondale Barracks?” Penny responded. “I can be there in twenty minutes. You are sure you are OK?”
“I am fine, Mom,” Danny snorted. “I’ll see you in a bit.”
The four teens walked out and took seats in the back of the two unmarked police cars. Danny and Mason rode with Lieutenant Fulton. Logan and Nolan rode with Detective Weller. Boths sets of boys were warned not to discuss what they saw with each other until they were finished with their interviews.
The four teens were scattered around various spots in the barracks, to keep them separated. Danny ended up sitting at a table in a small conference room. His mom arrived a few minutes later. Lieutenant Fulton and Detective Weller escorted her to Danny’s side. Penny took a seat beside him.
The two detectives sat down at the table opposite Penny and Danny. Lieutenant Fulton started off.
“This is a non-custodial interview to determine what you may have witnessed relating to an reported assault and battery at the Avon Grove High School earlier this afternoon. You are free to leave if you and your mother chose to do so. We would like you to answer some questions so we can better understand what happened outside the school cafeteria. Do you consent to having this interview videotaped?”
Danny glanced at his mom, who nodded yes, before answering. “I do.”
“Please state your full name for the record.”
“Daniel James Martin,” Danny answered.
“Do you consent to this videotaped interview, Mrs. Martin?” Detective Weller asked. “Please state your full name too.”
“Dr. Penelope Edwards Martin,” Peny responded. “I consent to you videoing this interview with my son.”
“Please describe what you observed outside the cafeteria today,” Lieutenant Fulton asked.
Danny related the whole thing from the time he, Logan, Mason and Nolan left the cafeteria until Principal Brandt arrived to take charge of the scene.
“Do you know the victim, Oliver Stirling?”
“I know of him,” Danny replied. “We’re in the same grade and Avon Grove isn’t that big of a school. I know who he is but we never had any classes together. I think when I asked Oliver for permission to give him first aid is probably the first time I ever spoke to him.”
“You said that Kai Woodrow looked directly at you and stated, ‘Hey, varsity quarterback. Stop staring, this ain’t no fucking business of yours.’ Is that correct?” Detective Weller asked. “Did you take that as a direct threat to you?”
“Yes, I did,” Danny answered.
“Do you know Kai Woodrow?”
“Only by reputation,” Danny replied. “He and his buddies Abel and Bart Leon are notorious around our school. They are good people to avoid as much as possible.”
“You gave Oliver first aid when Woodrow and his buddies fled?” Lieutenant Fulton asked. Danny nodded yes. “What is the extent of your first aid training?”
“Logan, Mason, Nolan and I are all Boy Scouts,” Danny replied. “We all have First Aid Merit Badge. I got certified as a lifeguard this summer at Scout camp. That includes extensive practice and testing of your first aid knowledge.”
“Do you know this Allison that Bart Leon referred to?” Detective Weller asked.
“I have no idea who she is,” Danny replied. “I steer clear of Kai Woodrow and I don’t know Oliver well enough to know who he is dating.”
“Thank you for your cooperation, Daniel,” Lieutenant Fulton commented. “I will have one of our admins prepare a summary of your interview. Please review the summary and sign it if it is accurate, Danel and Dr. Martin. Would either of you like something to drink ... a soda or coffee perhaps?”
