“Hello, honey, what’s up?” Rosa Fritz asked as her phone rang.
“Rosa, Dad had a heart attack,” Ed Fritz reported. “It’s bad. They don’t know if he’s going to make it.”
“Oh ... no,” Rosa said. “What do you need?”
“Mom says we should get up to Lancaster General as soon as we can,” Ed replied.
“I’ll try to get a babysitter, if I can,” Rosa said.
“No, bring the boys along,” Ed replied. “Kyle talked to his mom. She will look after them overnight, if necessary. Drop them off as you go by Paradise on your way to the hospital. I will go to Lancaster General directly from here [NovaCare Complex].”
“I have a complication,” Rosa said. “Robbie Martin is over here working on a science project with Justin. I’ll will try to reach Penny and see if she can pick up Robbie.”
“Do that,” Ed agreed. “I’ll see you at the hospital.”
“I will pray for Bob [Robert Fritz, her father-in-law],” Rosa said. She called Penny Martin at New Bolton Center. She was unavailable, she was in surgery at the moment.
“I’ll call Allison North,” Rosa said to Robbie. “Perhaps she can meet us at your house and watch you until your mom gets home.”
“She could, but Danny is home this afternoon,” Robbie replied. “Mom’s OK with him watching me for an hour or two.”
“You’re sure he is home?” Rosa asked. “He doesn’t have something going for football?”
“He works out at the school weight room Mondays and Fridays,” Robbie replied. “He does video study with the football team on Wednesday for the winter. He is home. I am sure.”
“OK,” Rosa agreed. “EJ, help our brother pack for an overnight. Robbie’s grandmother will get you dinner tonight and look after you until your father and I get back from the hospital.”
“We might miss school tomorrow?” EJ asked. “Yeah, Mom?” Justin echoed.
“I don’t know,” Rosa replied. “We will see how your grandfather is doing and decide from there. Get moving boys. We need to get on the road.”
EJ and Justin had overnight bags packed in about ten minutes. She loaded up all the kids, including Robbie and headed over to the Martin’s residence. Rosa pulled up beside the garage when she arrived at the Martin’s home.
“Go inside and confirm that Danny is home, Robbie,” she instructed her young guest.
Robbie scampered inside. Danny was not downstairs. He bounded upstairs, turned right and headed down the hall towards Danny’s bedroom. The door was closed. He could hear someone or maybe more than one person behind the closed door. Robbie scurried outside and reported, “Danny’s home. Thanks for the ride home, Aunt Rosa. I hope Mr. Fritz is OK.”
Rosa drove off for Lancaster. Robbie went inside. He decided he’d better tell Danny he was home, since Danny is in charge until Mom got home. He scurried upstairs, turned right and headed down the hallway to Danny’s bedroom. The door was still closed. He could hear moaning on the other side of the door. Hesitantly, he knocked and called out, “Danny?” No answer. He knocked again. “Danny?”
Robbie took a deep breath and turned the doorknob. He knew he was supposed give Danny privacy when his door was shut, but Danny was in charge and Danny needed to know Robbie was home. He pushed the door open and looked inside. His eyes went wide and his mouth gaped open. Moans and grunts continued from the bed. Robbie stared for fifteen or twenty seconds before quietly closing the door and retreating downstairs.
‘What the heck had he seen?’ the confused seven-year-old wondered as he turned on the TV in the family room. He surfed to the Disney channel and turned on a cartoon, to try to take his mind off the images burned into his brain. The cartoon distracted him a little but not totally. What was Danny doing?
He was watching a second cartoon about forty minutes later when Danny walked into the family room. “You’re home early,” he commented as he sat down on the couch beside Robbie.
“Uncle Ed’s dad is sick,” Robbie explained. “The whole family went to Lancaster to see Mr. Fritz. Aunt Rosa brought me home early.”
“What have you been up to?” Danny asked, mildly concerned to hear his baby brother was home while he entertained Anna. Their parents were pretty cool about teens having sex, though there was one cardinal rule – Robbie is to know nothing about what is going on.
“I came home and watched cartoons,” Robbie answered quietly after a brief hesitation. Danny did not catch the brief hesitation or the import of it.
“Cool,” Danny declared. He watched cartoons with Robbie for about fifteen minutes. Robbie stole glances at his big brother. He seemed so normal now. Fifty minutes ago, he’d been naked doing whatever it was with an equally naked Anna. Robbie had a guess about what they were doing but he wasn’t sure. If he was right, why in the world were Danny and Anna doing it? It made no sense.
Danny excused himself after a bit and went upstairs to get a head start on his homework. What did all this mean? It was so confusing. Robbie’s mom came home around 5:15 that evening. He gave her a couple minutes to get settled before he came out to the kitchen.
“Mommy, you know I got home early today, right?”
“I got Aunt Rosa’s two messages,” Penny replied. “I hope Mr. Fritz will be OK.”
“I know I am supposed to let Danny or Jessie know if I get home and they’re in charge,” Robbie said. “Danny’s door was closed and I knocked two times and he didn’t answer. I walked in so I could tell him. I saw something I shouldn’t have seen...” Robbie took a deep breath. “ ... and it confuses me.”
Penny tried to mask her own alarm. “What did you see?”
“Um ... Danny and ... uh, Anna ... they were naked and Danny was on top of her kind of bouncing up and down.” Penny drew in a sharp breath. Oh, crap! Robbie continued his story. “Danny’s pee-pee was stiff and...”
“You know the proper names,” Penny insisted. “His penis was erect.”
“And Danny was moving his penis in and out of Anna’s hole ... uh, vagina. Is this how people have sex?”
“It is, sweetie,” Penny responded.
“This is the part that confuses me,” Robbie stated. “A man and a woman have sex to make a baby. Why would Danny and Anna want to make a baby?”
“They don’t,” Penny replied.
“Why would they have sex if they don’t want to make a baby?” Robbie asked. “It seemed like it hurt when they were doing it, from all the moans they made. This doesn’t make any sense.”
“The moans were from pleasure, not pain,” Penny responded. “You understand that sex is how babies are made, for human beings and for other animals too.”
“Like Justin’s neighbor’s dog Misty,” Robbie said. “Justin and I watched last spring when a stray dog grabbed Misty by the neck, got on top of her and bounced up and down like Danny did with Anna this afternoon. Misty had puppies later that summer.”
“Exactly like that,” Penny said. “Nature made sex feel good ... really, really good so species would make babies and keep the species going. What would happen to a species if they all stopped having babies?”
“They’d die out ... eventually,” Robbie said. “Danny’s pee-p ... uh, penis was stiff this afternoon when he had sex with Anna. My penis gets stiff sometimes too. Does that mean I could have sex?”
“It is possible,” Penny said. “But I would bet that doesn’t interest you all that much now, does it?”
“Not really,” Robbie agreed.
“You have seen your brothers and sister go through puberty,” Penny said.
“Yeah,” Robbie agreed. “It makes them grow hair in funny places and they grow real tall. Back in Pittsburgh, Danny wasn’t much taller than me. Now he towers over me, is as tall as Davey and might get as tall as Dad.”
“Growing taller, growing hair under your arm pits, on your face and above your penis are all parts of growing into a man. Your voice will get deeper when you reach puberty in a few years. All of these changes are caused by hormones your body will start to make. Those hormones will also change how you feel about girls. Right now, girls don’t interest you all that much, do they?”
“Not really,” Robbie agreed. “I’d rather hang with guys. They like the same things I do – sports, playing ball and stuff. Girls just want to play with dolls and things. I am not into that stuff.”
“Exactly as it should be when you are seven,” Penny responded. “Danny was a lot like you when we lived in Pittsburgh, wasn’t he?” Robbie nodded yes. “He got older and the hormones started to change his outlook and interests.”
“He and Anna spend so much time together anymore,” Robbie agreed. “All the time they can when Danny doesn’t have football. I think football is more fun than girls.”
Penny snickered. “A true son of your father’s. When you reach Danny’s age, girls will take a spot beside football, once those hormones kick in as you hit puberty. Does this make more sense?”
“Yeah, I think so,” Robbie agreed.
“You learned what today?”
“Um ... sex is how species keep going and sex can be fun too,” Robbie stated. “At least when you are old enough. When I am Danny’s age, I will understand all of this better.”
“That is a good summary,” Penny said. “Remember what your father and I have said about sex when we have talked to you before.”
“What you tell me is private for our family only,” Robbie said. “If one of my friends spouts some nonsense about babies coming from storks or whatever, just nod and smile. His parents deserve the chances to explain sex to him, not me. I can’t discuss this with anyone, not even Justin [Fritz].”
“Exactly right,” Penny responded. “Any more questions about this afternoon?”
“No, Mommy,” Robbie agreed. Penny headed upstairs to finish one last task relating to the afternoon’s events.
“Daniel James,” Penny stated as she found Danny in his room at his desk. Danny involuntarily shuddered at his mom using both of his names. What had he done now?
“Your door has a lock on it, did you know that?”
“Um, yeah,” Danny agreed.
“Did you know your little brother came home early today while you were entertaining Anna?”
“Um ... yeah, but he was downstairs,” Danny responded. “I am sure he didn’t hear anything.”
“He saw and heard quite a bit,” Penny said. “Did you know he was in your room and watched while you ‘entertained’ Anna?”
“Ohh ... shi ... uh, crap!” Danny blurted out. “I didn’t know. I’m sorry. How much trouble am I in?”
“You’re not in trouble,” Penny answered. “Just use your lock in the future, even when you are home alone. You never know when somebody will come home early.”
“I am sorry about this, Mom,” Danny said. “If Robbie knows Anna and I have sex, does that mean the prohibition of us doing it when he is around is done with?”
“Let’s keep that rule in effect, as much as possible,” Penny replied.
“You got it, Mom.” -----oooOooo-----
Kyle got home from his dinner meeting around eight o’clock, just in time to find out about the afternoon events and the evening discussion. Kyle sat down and talked a bit with Robbie before he went to bed, reinforcing the message Penny had given the not quite so innocent boy. Kyle stopped in to chat with his middle son too, once Robbie was in bed.
“You know about the lock on the door?” Kyle inquired as Danny worked through some math problems at his desk.
“I know about the lock, Dad,” Danny insisted. “I will use it in the future. I am sorry all this happened today.”
“I have another eight years until you’re done with school and at least fifteen for Robbie,” Kyle commented. “I’m going to be totally gray from raising kids by the time I am done.”
“Your beard was already mostly gray last summer when you got home from Philmont,” Danny teased. “Anyway, you’re the one who knocked Mom up with Robbie. Have the fun, do the time, Dad.”
“Thanks for all the sympathy, kid,” Kyle groused. “Lock the door in the future.”
“Done, Dad.”
Kyle found a text message on his phone when he got dressed after showering early the next morning. It was from Ed Fritz asking Kyle to call, no matter the time.
“Hey, Ed, it’s Kyle,” Kyle said when Ed answered the call.
“I won’t be in today, boss,” Ed responded. “My dad had another heart attack earlier this morning. He passed away.”
“I am so sorry to hear that, Ed,” Kyle said. “You have my deepest condolences.”
“Dad was scheduled for a quadruple bypass this morning, once they got him stabilized,” Ed explained. “They needed to get him stabilized first, but that never happened. The only good thing is Rosa, the boys and I got to see him one last time before he passed. That is a small blessing.”
“It is,” Kyle acknowledged. “Take whatever time you need, buddy. Do what you need to do for your dad and mom. We will get by down here. Big stones come first and the biggest stone is always family.”
“What about the Senior Bowl?” Ed asked. “I guess I can get out to Indianapolis once the funeral is over.”
“No, take care of family,” Kyle responded. “Someone can sub for you. Worry about your mom and your family. I will make sure things get covered.”
“OK, I will,” Ed agreed. “I will keep in touch and let you know how things are going. Mom and I are co-executors of Dad’s will. I have no idea what is going to be involved in all of this.”
“I understand,” Kyle responded. “Take whatever time you need. Whatever you need, tell me. If Peter [Ed’s older brother] and his family need a ride, tell me where and when the plane needs to be. I will make it happen for you.”
“Thanks for the offer, Kyle,” Ed said. “I think Peter can make his own way back to Lancaster County.”
“The offer is still there if he has problems,” Kyle said. “Give your mom and Rosa my love.”
“Thanks, buddy.”
“Dylan, I hope I didn’t call too early,” Kyle chuckled. It was 8:30 AM. “I don’t know what hours you keep out of season.”
“I keep hours like a dad of four kids,” Dylan replied. “Out of season, Beth gets to sleep half an hour later. I get the kids off to school. What’s up?”
“Have you heard the news about Ed Fritz’s dad?” Kyle asked.
“No.”
“Bob passed away early this morning,” Kyle said.
“I am sorry to hear that,” Dylan said. “I never met him, but both Jeremy and Ed spoke highly of him.”
“Bob was a good guy and will be missed,” Kyle said. “Ed will be tied up with funeral arrangements and executor things for who knows how long. We are shorthanded for the Senior Bowl. Could you free yourself up and join us? It would be from Sunday morning to Thursday night.”
“I am still a player,” Dylan responded. “Am I allowed to do this?”
“The league doesn’t limit who or how many people we bring to observe at the Senior Bowl,” Kyle answered. “I don’t see any problem if you come.”
“What do you expect me to do?” Dylan asked. “I’ve never done a Senior Bowl, except to play in it.”
“I remember, I was there with you too,” Kyle laughed. “You will provide a quarterback’s prospective on the seniors. You may sit in on some interviews. Nothing heavy-duty, I just want someone representing the QB room as a part of this process.”
“OK, I am in,” Dylan said. “I have to clear this with Beth, but I don’t see why she would have a problem with this. My schedule is clear next week.”
“Call Beth and confirm this,” Kyle responded. “Do that now. If you can make time, come into NovaCare today. We’ll brief you on the plans.”
“Are we flying out of Philly on Sunday?”
“No, our charter leaves from G. O. Carlson [Airport] outside Coatesville,” Kyle replied. “Why schlep all the coaches into Philly when most of us live in Chester County?”
“Carlson sounds fine, Coach,” Dylan said. “I’ll try to get in later this morning. I do have to be home by four o’clock today. Jaden doesn’t do day care during my off-season. That is when his bus will drop him off.”
“That’s fine, Dylan,” Kyle agreed.
Sunday, February 6, 2033 – G. O. Carlson Airport, Coatesville, PA
Seven coaches, Kyle, Coach C, Jaylen Bailey, Cody Thompson, JT Hill, Leo Nields, and Kevin Stover plus Dylan Harris met at the Carlson Airport for the charter flight down to Mobile, Alabama. On the flight down, Kyle made a point of sitting with Dylan Hayes.
“Dylan, I am involved in a fund-raising golf tournament for Chester County Council Scouts,” Kyle offered.
“Golf tournament? YOU??” Dylan guffawed. Kyle’s distaste for game of golf was well known among his friends and associates.
“It’s a joint fund-raiser with PA Dutch Council,” Kyle explained. “Andy is handling the golf end of the tournament. I am strong arming contributors.”
“I’d be happy to donate,” Dylan said. “Anna is enjoying the Venturer crew.”
“I am looking for more from you,” Kyle responded. “I would like you to be a captain and go out and recruit golfers for foursomes and threesomes.”
“A golf threesome?” Dylan laughed. “You do understand they normally play foursomes at tournaments?”
“I know that,” Kyle smirked. “The donation for a foursome will be a grand. The threesome will cost two grand but we will get one of the celebrities I am recruiting for the tournament to join to make them a foursome.”
“Not a bad way to raise some more funds,” Dylan agreed. “When does this start?”
“Recruiting captains to recruit the golfers starts now,” Kyle explained. “Recruiting golfers will start off at the first captains’ meeting on Monday, February 28th. This would be a great way for you to go out and meet more of the community. I happen to know your schedule isn’t all that full for the next few months.”
“Andy’s part of this event?” Dylan asked.
“Andy and I are co-chairs,” Kyle responded.
“OK, count me in,” Dylan agreed.
It wasn’t a long flight down to Mobile, AL. They took the van the team rented for their stay and headed over to the hotel and checked in.
Kyle sought out Ryan and his staff. He got briefed on the team’s plans for the week. The coaching staff grabbed a quick lunch at the restaurant in the hotel before taking the Skywalk over to the convention center. Next up for the graduating seniors was one of the most hated parts of the Senior Bowl. The kids had to parade across the stage, one by one, wearing nothing but compression boxers-briefs, so the assembled coaches and scouts could look them over their musculature, body tone and general fitness. It was embarrassing as hell but nearly every NFL player had done it before getting into the league.
Kyle and the Eagles coaching staff got time to visit with other coaches when the boxer-brief parade was over. It was nice to visit with the others in a relaxed and non-competitive atmosphere. The interactions were much more relaxed and any brief meetings they had during the season when their teams played on Sundays.
Kyle and his group were heading back to the hotel to have dinner with then ran into a large familiar group gathered in the lobby talking. It was Ryan Reynolds with his coaching staff talking with Brian Kovacevic and the Seattle coaching staff.
The meeting wasn’t surprising, given that Ryan had worked with Brian back in Denver near the end of Kyle’s playing career. Brendan Hayden and Zane Grey, temporarily on Ryan’s staff, both played in Denver and knew Brian well too. Brian Kovacevic had hired some former Denver coaches for his staff when he took over the Seahawks eight years ago. He also recruited some former players interested in coaching to fill out his staff, just like Kyle had done when he took over the Eagles two seasons ago.
“Coach, great to see you,” Brian declared happily as Kyle approached.
“It has been too long since we talked,” Kyle agreed.
“We didn’t get much time last fall when we played,” Brian laughed. “Monday night games are like that. We had a red-eye to catch to get back home after we squeaked out that win over you.”
“It’s the life we chose,” Kyle laughed. “How are the wife and kids?” The two exchanged pleasantries about their families.
“Where are you and your staff heading, Coach?” Brian asked.
“Grabbing some dinner here at the restaurant,” Kyle responded.
“There are better places to eat in town than here,” Brian responded. “Ryan and I were talking about taking our staffs out for dinner. Why don’t you and your people join us?”
“Sure, why not?” Kyle replied. “This is only my second time in Mobile as a head coach. Zach and the Pittsburgh staff usually kept it simple and ate here.”
“Come with us, Coach,” Brian said. “I know of a place with some real, old-style Southern cooking. You’ll love it.”
“They can handle this many people showing up unannounced?”
“No problem,” Brian laughed. “The NFL is big business for Mobile. They have thirty-four coaching staffs looking for meals. They are ready for large groups to show up. The Senior Bowl perks up their local economy in the dead of winter.”
“Let’s do it then,” Kyle agreed. The restaurant Brian recommended was only a block and a half from the Renaissance Riverfront Hotel where they were staying. The restaurant took the large group upstairs to their banquet room. Three other teams had tables there for dinner. The wait staff assembled enough tables in a U-shape to seat everyone.
The restaurant had plenty of wait staff to take orders from the close to thirty coaches gathered around the dinner table. Kyle, Brian and Ryan as the head coaches for the three staffs, sat at the bottom end of the “U” where they could observe the interaction between the staffs. Gulf Shrimp and Grits, Shrimp Poboys and Chicken Fried Steak smothered in Country Gravy were very popular.
The coaches got acquainted, reacquainted and reminisced about old times together as they enjoyed their dinners. Old times were remembered. Things regarding current football was avoided, at least at first. Coach Brian Kovacevic broke the unspoken taboo first, addressing Ryan.
“Ryan, later this week could you do me a solid?” Brian asked. “Give me a briefing about the three quarterbacks you’ve been working with.”
“Um ... uh,” Ryan said, glancing at Kyle. Kyle shook his head no. “I don’t know that I can do that, Brian.”
Brian caught shared look between Kyle and Ryan. “C’mon, Coach,” Brian insisted. “This is no big deal. I’ve been hurting since Todd [Landry] retired four years ago. The last few seasons have not been up to my standards. My bosses are going to lose patience with me sooner than later. A little intel from Ryan may help me find my guy.”
“I don’t know, Brian,” Kyle allowed.
“C’mon, Coach,” Brian responded. “You found your guy already.” He chuckled. “At least it looks like it from what I saw in the second half of our game against your team last fall. A little intel from Ryan won’t hurt your team at all and might give me an edge to solving a long-running problem.”
“I haven’t looked at the teams we play next season, but didn’t your team finish third in the NFC West?” Kyle asked. Brian agreed they had. “We’re going to play each other next season. No way can I justify giving coaches’ evaluations about potential draftees to someone we play next season.”
“You can’t blame me for asking, can you Coach?” Brian asked, grinning sheepishly.
“No, not at all,” Kyle replied. “I sincerely want you to find that QB that you need. This league is dog eat dog. I just can’t help you out.”
“I know,” Brian acknowledged.
Monday, February 7, 2033 – Avon Grove High School, West Grove, PA
Mr. Sanchez insisted that Chris read for the role of Shrek for the spring play. Jessie was to read for the role of Princess Fiona. The auditions were almost cursory. Both teens got the role as the leads in the play. It was going to be fun. The most challenging part was going to be the first half of the play when Shrek and Princess Fiona traded barbs. Playing a loving couple later in the play would be a snap. Chris was hands-down the best boyfriend Jessie had since she started dating.
Monday, February 7, 2033 – Ladd-Pebbles Stadium, Mobile, AL
Over nine hundred scouts, coaches and executives were scattered around the stadium observing as first the American team and then the National team of college seniors practiced and prepared for Saturday’s game. Everyone was there to observe how the seniors and potential draftees performed and handled themselves against top competition. This game featured the best players the NCAA had to offer to the NFL.
Everyone took notes and decided who interested them. This week they could informally interview any of the players present. Who looked promising enough to interview next month at the NFL Combine? Teams were limited to sixty interviews that would be scheduled by the NFL during the combine. Who was promising enough to bring in for an on-site visit to their team’s facilities? They were allowed up to thirty on-site visits before the draft began at the end of April.
Kyle and his team watched and made notes. The QB from Arizona State caught Kyle and Dylan’s attention. The kid had performed well during his team’s CFP playoff run last month. Nobody expected them to win a game in the playoffs, much less advance to the semi-finals, where Georgia finally sent them home to Tempe, AZ.
Ryan Reynolds sought out Kyle after dinner. Kyle was standing with a group of the offensive coaching staff.
“Boss, do you have James Leighton on your list to interview this week?” Ryan asked.
“Leighton?” Kyle asked. “Yeah ... I think we have him down on our list for interviewing at the combine, don’t we, Kevin?”
“We do, Coach,” Kevin Stover, the team’s tight ends coach replied. “For interview at the combine.”
“Elevate him,” Ryan replied. “You want to get to know as much about this kid...” Ryan paused and chuckled. “He’s twenty-four. You need to know as much about this guy as you can. Set up an interview with him as soon as you can, boss.”
“Why?” Kyle asked.
“This guy is someone special,” Ryan answered. “Beyond his fifty-four starts in four years at Arizona State, this guy is super smart, as in Aiden Anderson IQ or better. His football IQ is through the roof too. Would you believe this guy was pestering me already Sunday afternoon. ‘Coach, can I get a playbook so I can study it?’ On Sunday afternoon?”
Dylan Hayes, who was in the crowd of other coaches guffawed and pointed towards Kyle. Both Kevin Stover and Leo Neilds had smiles too. They knew the story. Ryan had a funny look on his face until he realized why Dylan laughed.
“You guys did the Senior Bowl together, didn’t you?” Ryan smirked. Kyle nodded yes. “Boss, you were the kid pestering his Senior Bowl coach for a playbook on Sunday afternoon, weren’t you?”
“It was Sunday evening when I pestered Coach Baldwin,” Kyle laughed. “Brian Kovacevic hooked me up with a playbook to review in the coaches’ suite until lights out that evening.”
“You will want to sit down with this guy, boss,” Ryan promised. “Schedule an interview with this guy ASAP.”
“I’ll let Julian know,” Kyle agreed. “Either he or one of his staff will elevate the priority for this interview. You think this guy has that much potential? Will other teams see what you are seeing? He did stand out at practice this afternoon.”
“All the teams will see that,” Ryan agreed. “They don’t get the behind the scenes look I have. Leighton is only 6’-1”, so he’ll be considered a short QB. How much interest will a short QB draw?”
“Drew Brees and Ed Fritz did pretty good in the league, despite their height,” Kyle responded. “Thanks for the heads up. We will check this guy out.”
Kyle met with Julian Lurie later and passed on the interview request. Julian had noted Leighton as someone interesting too in his notes from the afternoon’s practice. He promised to line up an interview for tomorrow night, once Kyle returned from Bob Fritz’s funeral.”
Tuesday, February 8, 2033 – St. John’s United Methodist Church, Kinzers, PA
Kyle was up at 5:00 am to catch his charter flight to Lancaster Airport for Bob Fritz’s funeral. He caught an Uber from the airport to the church, arriving in plenty of time to join the long receiving line waiting to pay their respects to the deceased. Kyle conferred with Penny by cell phone on the way to the church. She met him at the end of the line. About a dozen more people joined the line while Kyle and Penny waited. Kyle noticed Walt and Karen Caffrey join the queue.
“Let’s visit with my old coach, Honey,” Kyle suggested. The two dropped back in line to join the Caffreys.
“Wow, this is a long drive from State College,” Kyle noted as he greeted Coach Caffrey. “I didn’t know you knew Bob that well.”
“Bob was very active in the football boosters club when you and Ed were playing varsity,” Walt replied.
“Anyway, this is a good excuse for us to come down and see Jon and Beth’s new home,” Karen added. “We’re heading to West Grove after the funeral.”
“Seeing the grandkids is always a good reason to travel,” Penny laughed.
“Coach, thanks for giving Jon a shot on your staff,” Walt said. “I hope he does a good job for you.”
