We tabled ten of us for the big Thanksgiving meal. The weather cooperated, so we actually served and ate in the late-afternoon under our large sun shade at our outdoor table – KC’s parents, Ally’s parents, my parents, plus Ally, KC, Stacy, and me. For the northerners, it was highly unusual to dine outside, since there’d already been a minor snowstorm across some of the northern states and as usual it was cold.

We’d had a chance to spend time together in the two days before turkey day, so we were festive and joyful. Questions about our foursome had pretty much been answered. Everyone wanted to return for Christmas, which, for us, was great news since we had been wondering how to split our time between each set of parents.

There were close relatives that we didn’t get to meet at that Thanksgiving. They went elsewhere. Ally had a brother – Zackery – who was in Paris doing something with World Bank. KC had a sister – Rachael – who was a nurse in San Diego. I was an only child. Stacy’s brother Cole had gone to Lisa’s parent’s house for the day, a first meeting in a relationship that seemed to be getting serious. She did spend part of the day with George and Brenda having some spiked egg nog and cookies.

Over the Thanksgiving dinner table, yet a few more questions about our family finally emerged, no doubt helped by the six bottles of wine that we’d consumed up to that point, and some of us weren’t drinking alcohol and I limited myself to one glass. We ate at four p.m., but had started drinking about noon. I had the feeling that somebody was feeding various parents the ‘right’ questions to ask, but I knew that it wasn’t any of us.

I laughed to myself because nobody asked the ‘blunter question’ that the ‘rents probably wanted to know: ‘How did the four of us make love?’ Instead, we talked about our interactions during the day, how we shared roles in the household, how we made decisions that affected us, and a few other relationship and communication areas.

Everyone had taken a house tour and saw our renovated bedroom with the huge bed that according to George Mason looked like the deck on an aircraft carrier and guaranteed a soft landing every time. Thus, the question of how we slept got asked in a subtle way, hinting at the sex.

The four of us and many of our guests always slept in the nude. That information did not get included in the response. The rest of the response truly dealt with ‘sleeping’ and getting in and out of the bed without disturbing the others. I thought of the picture I had on my cellphone of the five couples fucking on the bed. I laughed to myself about what the reaction might be if I showed that to them. The bed was definitely functional.

We had ‘official’ visits to say hello and wish us a joyous holiday over the weekend by our neighbors. We responded warmly and affectionately – sometimes very affectionately. Various parents connected the dots with remarks we’d made on our calls home. Somewhere along the line our ‘somewhat intimate’ relationships with our neighbors around the cul-de-sac came out in a veiled manner. I’d mentioned about going to an ‘erotic Halloween party’ where the costumes were risqué and outrageous to my parents only a month earlier. KC had told her mother that she was not lacking in the sex department, and somehow, she revealed that Ally, Stacy, and I were not her only source for pleasure. Ally had said something about ‘extended relationships outside the house’ to her mom. The mothers compared notes when we weren’t around listening or trying to manage the situation or change the subject.

I believe it was Ally’s mother that summarized what she’d learned about us as we sat around having a glass of wine at the cocktail hour on the day after Thanksgiving; “I think I figured out the unspoken part of your lifestyle. The four of you are swingers, and you have other people that are involved somehow, even some of those neighbors and friends that stopped by to say hello. I must say that I think that’s arousing but challenging to your group marriage. I assume you’re dealing with the challenges and not letting that lifestyle adversely impact any of your feelings for each other?”

The other five parents leaned forward to see our reactions and hear our responses. Not everyone had the same look of acceptance. Not one of the other five parents argued that was an inappropriate question. They wanted the answer.

Ally shot me a glance and nodded at the remark. We’d talked about how to handle the discovery and that she would be the point person for this. “Yes, mom. I’d be hard put to think of how we could communicate more, share emotions and feelings more, and talk about every nuance of our relationship more. I include KC, Stacy, and my husband in that remark. Everything going on has been positive in our lives.

“Moreover, our friends and neighbors who are the greatest of friends talk and share much more than in a normal relationship. When we’re together, we often verify that and have discussions that involve all of us. We have a game we play most weekends where we draw a discussion question that helps us dive deeper into who we are and who they are, with each of our friends.”

My father looked more interested. My mother asked, “How many of you are there?” I noticed that she didn’t reference what any numeric response would refer to. Clever.

Ally responded in a cheery tone, “Twenty-two. One couple dropped out for a bit for personal reasons, but the rest of us continue in a steady and joyful way.” Her tone of voice was our collective effort to show that we were happy with what was going on and that nothing was threatening in any way to any of us. We nodded and smiled along with her in agreement and support.

Betsy, my mother, then truly shocked me with her own carefree remark. “I think that you’re having an experience that every couple should have early in their marriage. Ken and I were in a similar group for years before Doug was born. Pretty racy but one helluva lot of fun. After he came along, we decided to focus on being parents and not over-sexed kids in our twenties, as we’d been.”

My jaw must have dropped to the countertop. The whole mood of everyone sitting around changed to. The other parents laughed and nodded in some kind of agreement at her comment.

I expected a stunned silence at the table after my mom’s statement, but Peggy, Ally’s mother, chimed in, in a casual way, “We did something similar. We’d lived in free-love commune with five other couples. We were ‘free use’ with each other, which mostly meant the women were always occupied. From what I read, that terminology is coming back into vogue.”

This time, it was Ally’s mouth that fell agape as she gaped at her mother’s admission. We were each obviously discovering things about our parents that had never been communicated to us before. Stacy looked on with interest and curiosity about what the next revelation would be. She didn’t have a horse in this race.

Martin, KC’s father, had been nodding and laughing at how some of the ‘children’ in the group were shocked at their elders’ behavior. His contribution, before his wife Terri could speak, was, “I don’t think that any of you ‘kids’ are unique or that the apple fell far from the tree. We’ve All done something in our past like what you’ve got going on. Personally, I’d love to relive parts of those years again.” He emphasized the word ‘all’, and swept his hand around in a grand and encompassing gesture to include everyone present.

The older adults were smiling and nodding at Martin’s statement. I felt shocked, and my glances at Ally and KC confirmed they were in a similar state. Stacy obviously knew of her parents participation as swingers in our group. The rest of what had been said was remarkable news.

Reading between the lines given what got said, our parents had been involved with other people in some sort of swinging or polyamorous situation earlier in their lives – early on in their marriages. That made me wonder if any of them still had something going on.

None of us asked for details or posed any potentially embarrassing questions in the group setting. I would sure have a boatload of questions for my parents when I could get them alone. Ally had that same look of determination on her face.

There was a brief round of questions between the older adults about how often, where they’d been, and why the segued out of that lifestyle. They weren’t shy about asking those questions of each other, like talking about the weather; we listened intently. What shocked us further was that each of them expressed interest, as Martin did, about wanting to get back into something like that – a racier and sexier lifestyle. There was a lot more head nodding and agreement about various ideas tossed around.

After eating leftovers on Friday, we had more leftovers than the original food that had originally graced our table. How’d that happen? I figured we’d be eating leftovers until the following Thanksgiving. I was grateful that we’d obtained a used refrigerator that we kept in the garage for overflow.

Cute and not unexpected, Ally, KC, and I each cut our parents from the larger group and took separate walks with them, although by then it was pretty dark outside. Fortunately, after getting to the main road outside the cul-de-sac, there were sidewalks, streetlights, and different directions to stroll so that we didn’t intersect.

After we were away from the house, I said to my folks, “Okay, spill it. What went on before I was born – or after that?”

My dad laughed and said, “Well, you know that your mom and I got married right after college together. We moved to Springfield and immediately befriended some other people through our church. One thing led to another, and soon we were in a group of people we liked a lot and we were soon fucking like a bag of rabbits with each other.

“We were in that group for three years and then through most of you mother’s pregnancy with you – a little over four years. We’d held off changing jobs or moving to a larger home because we didn’t want to lose those ‘friendships’ and relationships. Honestly, we loved those people and they loved us. The sexual activity, however, was a major part of our attraction. Did you think your generation was the only one that discovered sex?” He laughed and my mother tittered at the memories he’d inspired.

My mom said, “The people we got close and loving with were already having sex with each other before they seduced us into the group. We were back and forth at each other’s homes at all times of the day and night, often swapped overnights, and ... well, we were always ready to do something with our friends. I never realized how large my appetite for having sex could be until then, and your dad and I had been VERY active on that score as soon as we started dating – on our first date together.” She rolled her eyes heavenward in a pleasant memory.

I bluntly asked my dad, almost teasing, “Are you sure you’re my father?”

He laughed hard. “I wondered that, too, for years. Yes. For one, your physical traits verified my paternity for us long before we did the DNA thing. When DNA testing got cheap enough we tested that hypothesis further and verified beyond a doubt that you are one-hundred percent of my doing – and your mother, of course. Before you ask, we seriously doubt that you have any half-brothers or half-sisters wandering around, either. We were pretty careful about birth control and paternity.”

My mother said, “We should have told you some of this before now, but ... well, because of the sex, it was a sensitive subject and something we’d didn’t think of bringing up. How would that start, ‘Oh, by the way, I used to fuck a lot of other men’? The atmosphere at your home encouraged our revelations. It’s spicy.”

Although I was glad that I had the ‘right’ parents, I was still unsettled learning about my parents’ sexual past.

“What was your life like those years?” I asked.
