Tillyn knew Aris would appear as soon as Marc had disappeared into the kitchen.

She could almost hear a certain amount disgust in Aris’s voice when he stated, “You are taking great risks having close contact with the Earthling.”

She huffed. “At least I’m enjoying the time while I’m stuck on the planet. Last time it happened it was quite different.”

“I agree,” Aris replied, “but you should keep the risks you take to a minimum.”

She knew her answer would not change her assistant’s opinion, but she said it anyway. “I’m supposed to mingle, remember?”

“Still, I advise you to keep your distance from him,” the small device responded.

She sighed and said, “I’ll try. Any news yet?”

“According to my calculations, the earliest a rescue team might arrive is in two cycles. Although the great unknown is the Sun festival, which might cause a delay of three cycles.”

“Really? I thought a zeta thirteen has the highest priority?”

“It has,” Aris responded, “and there’s only a small chance for the delay to happen.”

Tillyn actually liked the thought that she might need to stay longer with Marc. The funny feeling in her lower stomach she had when she’d kissed him felt almost unreal but also quite invigorating. Her heart was pounding in her chest when he’d cupped her face to physically pull her closer. The dominance he exuded at that moment was soothing and scary at the same time.

She had never had those feelings before and wondered whether this was because of the change she’d undergone.

“Let me know as soon as the rescue team is in orbit,” she commanded.

“As long as the Decree allows it, I will.”

She slowly shook her head when her assistant dissolved into thin air. She didn’t like the way Aris had responded but she couldn’t put her finger on what it exactly was.

“Supremacy,” Katlynn said with a slight tremor in her voice, “erm, I have, erm, an unusual audience request.”

She hated his dark mood and shivered when his eyes seemed to punch straight through her. “Who is it?” he grumbled.

“Pilot Luckua and friends,” she managed to whisper.

Her brother Utuck had convinced her that the Supremacy would understand their intent if she used Luckua’s name. To her relief the old man’s feral look changed into a surprised and almost happy expression.

“Send them in Katlynn,” he said buoyantly, “and oh, I want you to stay.”

“Supremacy?” she asked bewildered because she didn’t understand why.

With a twinkle in his eye, he pointed at the camera array in the room. Only then did she understand why he wanted her there; those cameras were disabled as long as she was in the room. The conversations between him and his assistant were believed to be private and not open for public consumption.

With hasty steps, she went back to the reception area and as soon as she saw the group she put her finger on her lips and waved her hand, indicating they had to come quickly. She loved the surprised look on her brother who rushed towards her.

It was a funny sight when her friends tiptoed towards the large office, and she almost forgot she had to enter the room first. With a few large steps she stood at the threshold of the Supremacy’s office and looked at the camera array that instantly went into standby mode.

“Supremacy,” she said softly, “may I introduce you to pilot Luckua, physician Millia, and technician Utuck?”

“Please,” he responded, “it’s always a pleasure to meet such an outstanding team.”

“Supremacy,” Millia replied with deference, “it’s an honor to meet you again.”

“So,” the old man said while he slowly stood, “three friends of Tillyn who are willing to risk their good names to rescue her.”

“Supremacy,” Utuck responded quickly, “we would like to initiate a test flight with a newly developed warp engine.”

The old man chuckled. “There’s no need to keep your intentions secret, dear Utuck. This conversation stays out of the books as long as your sister is with us in the room. But your suggestion to mark your journey as a test flight is brilliant.”

Luckua cleared his throat and said, “We can rescue your daughter, Supremacy, but we can’t salvage her ship.”

“Obviously,” he responded while steeping his rheumatic fingers, “but that will be for the salvation department to clear up.”

“Of course, Supremacy,” Utuck spoke up. “A small hurdle we need is your approval that would move the planned test flight forward a few cycles.”

The man nodded slowly and asked, “Are there any risks involved?”

“Technically, the new vessel has been certified for outer space flight,” Luckua said. “Normally, the first flight would be in our solar system in case something goes wrong. However, we are talking about a warp engine modification of a ship that has been used for outer space missions before.”

“The only risk we take, Supremacy,” Utuck continued, “is that the transitional warp field might fail. But there’s a fallback to the old system.”

“Excellent,” said the Supremacy. “Hand in the request and I’ll approve it. Now, keep the people involved to a minimum because I don’t want to be too busy flattening out the creases you might create.”

“We’ll keep it as discreet as possible, Supremacy,” Millia answered politely.

“Good,” he said with a warm smile, “I’m happy that Tillyn has such good friends. Thank you again.”

“You need to go,” Katlynn addressed the group. “We can’t stay in private mode any longer.”

“Good luck,” the Supremacy said as he watched them leave his office.

“You know,” said Tillyn after she had taken a small sip of her whiskey, “our worlds don’t differ that much.”

“Oh, really?” replied Marc relaxed while he traced his finger over the soft skin of her arm.

She loved his touch and as she snuggled even closer to him, she purred, “Yes, for example, from what I have seen in the park we have almost the same kind of vegetation. Like gramen or grass; your grass is far less coarse than ours.”

Marc nodded. “The grass in the park has been cultivated and I’m pretty sure natural grass is a lot wilder.”

“That makes sense,” she sighed.

“Tell me Tillyn,” Marc said, “how much do we humans differ from your kind? I mean you seemed to take it all just fine when we were in the restaurant. It felt like you were as comfortable as if you were amongst your own kind.”
