The second rank observer Masha sat dejectedly at the large table in the community center, sipping at a hot beverage. He still couldn’t believe that Observer Sebo delayed explorer Tillyn’s rescue by three cycles. Any explorer who’d executed protocol zeta thirteen had the right to be rescued as soon as possible.

“Hey, Masha, you look like you’ve lost your psychi, ” a friendly voice sounded next to him.

It was his best friend Utuck. “Oh, I don’t know,” he answered with a deep sigh. “One of the explorers is in trouble with a protocol zeta thirteen.”

“Oh, that’s horrible! Who is it?”

“Explorer Tillyn.”

“You’re joking right? Because the last time she was in great trouble in the delta quadrant, I heard the rescue team needed ten cycles to find her.”

Masha nodded. “I was with the team. She was barely alive when we found her. Her Aris couldn’t find anything she could eat and only the reclaimed condensed water was potable.”

“Oh my,” Utuck gasped while he shook his head. “No wonder she was relieved from any duties for so long.”

Masha chuckled. “It does help that her father is the Supremacy.”

“Really?”

He nodded.

“I don’t understand why he allowed the rescue to be delayed.”

“That, my dear Utuck, is called politics. Even the Supremacy must escalate the matter and I’m pretty sure the counsel won’t have a seating until after the Sun festival.”

“Tillyn is going to suffer again.”

Masha sighed deeply and said, “Observer Sebo says it’s better we rescue her after the festival.”

Utuck grumbled, “And you believe every word he said.”

“Of course not!” Masha retorted. “But I can’t organize a rescue behind his back, can I?”

“Indeed, you can’t,” replied his friend with a smirk. “But I’m pretty sure that I can convince Luckua to fly and Millia to be the physician on the mission.”

“Right,” Masha pondered, “and who is going to authorize the rescue?”

“That might not be too difficult,” said Utuck smugly. “My little sister is the Supremacy’s new assistant.”

Tillyn sat opposite Marc, and she tried to decipher the words on the menu, but she couldn’t read any of it.

Marc chuckled softly.

“What?” she asked indignantly.

“The expression on your face speaks volumes,” he replied with a slight smirk.

She sighed while she put down the menu. “I never took the opportunity to learn your written language.”

“Of course,” he responded as he touched her hand, “I can choose something for you based on what you ate last night.”

Her heart skipped a beat, not understanding what caused her to feel so excited. She enjoyed his gentle touch, which was a soothing feeling, but it still made her feel a little uncomfortable. She actually hated the fact that she was dependent on him.

“I’m sorry,” he said while he moved his hand away.

“Don’t be,” she responded, flushed. “It’s just such a change. I mean, normally I can eat what I want but now I don’t even know what it will taste like.”

“Guess you have to trust me.”

She adored his relaxed smile, which seemed to reach his captivating blue eyes. “Indulge me, Marc.”

With interest, she watched the women dressed in matching uniform, carrying trays full of drinks and food to tables. Soon enough one of them walked to their table and spoke with a friendly voice, “Good afternoon, what can I get you today?”

“We would like to have a bottle of Panna Natural Still Water, two spaghetti Carbonara, and two glasses of Fontana Candida Reserva Luna Mater,” Marc said with confidence.

Tillyn was appalled by the fake compassion the young woman showed when she said, “I’m sorry sir but that wine is only sold by the bottle.”

She thought it was remarkable Marc kept smiling when he replied, “In that case we would like a bottle.”

“Excellent! Panna Still Water, two Carbonara, and a bottle of Luna Mater Frascati,” the woman summarized and asked, “Is there anything else you like to order?”

“That will be all, thank you.”

As soon as the waitress left the table Tillyn said softly, “Why did she say she was sorry when she wasn’t?”

“You are very observant, Tillyn.” Marc replied. “She is probably pleased she can sell a whole bottle of wine to us, which surely will pepper the bill.”

“Pepper the bill?”

“The amount we pay for this meal will be significantly more.

“Oh,” she said, “I forgot you have to buy it.”

Marc nodded. “Do you have places like this on your planet?”

“We do, but you just get the food you want from the replicator and sit with your friends at a table.”

“What’s your planet called, Tillyn?”

She inhaled deeply because she suddenly got a little homesick as she remembered her favorite garden. She cleared her throat before she said softly, “It’s called Dunia.”

“I’m sorry,” Marc said while he reached for her hand again, “I, I’m just a little curious.”

The waitress came back with a black bottle and as she uncorked the bottle she asked, “Do you want to taste the wine first, Sir?”

She loved his genuine smile when he said, “I think the lady should have the honor this time.”

Tillyn frowned at him because she didn’t understand what was expected from her. “As I have chosen the wine,” he explained, “I think it’s only fair you have a taste first.”

With interest Tillyn watched the waitress pour a little of the clear, almost golden, liquid into her glass. Hesitantly she sniffed at the glass and took a small sip from the cold liquid. She was surprised how fruity the drink was. She noticed it wasn’t as strong as her home planet’s heady concoction thu nuck but she knew she had to limit her intake of this lovely drink.

“Hmm,” she purred after she felt the warm feeling develop in her chest. “This is nice.”

“Excellent,” the waitress said as she filled both wine glasses, “your food will arrive soon.”

As soon as they were alone again Marc took his glass and as he moved it towards her, he said, “We have a tradition to drink to someone’s well-being.”
