It was Thursday February 13, twelve o’clock and Marc was almost biting his nails because he desperately wanted to see sparkles appearing above the stain in the carpet. Anxiously, he looked at the second-hand moving towards the top of the clock and as it passed the number twelve, nothing happened.

“Shit!” he cursed. Desolated he slumped his shoulders as he realized his perfectly planned day for tomorrow was about to fall apart. He knew he’d assumed she would arrive tomorrow and had booked a table at his favorite restaurant. He decided to have a cup of coffee first before he reconsidered his plans.

Dejectedly he picked up his empty cup and walked, with his head hung low, to the kitchen. It was a disappointment but it actually didn’t really matter if she arrived a day later. He stared at the two little streams of dark coffee that slowly filled his cup.

He smiled when he remembered Tillyn’s shocked face when she tried her first cup. He was convinced it would only take a little time before she was addicted to it as well.

The lovely aroma of freshly brewed coffee always made him smile and after he’d taken a sip, he strolled back into the living room. He gasped when he saw a large case had materialized on the carpet and on top of it lay the two tablets.

With a happy sigh he pushed the tablet’s red button and was super relieved when he saw the radiant face of his beloved woman.

“Hey Marc,” Tillyn said with an elated voice, “I have very good news! I’ll be on my way while you watch this message and I’ll arrive next cycle!”

“Yes!!” Marc shouted.

“Since I’m going to land in your roof garden, I need to wait until it is dark. Blippy will be cloaked, so none of your sensors will detect it but it will still be visible. Aris will visit you while I’m descending to your place. If you tell him where you want Blippy to land, then he will guide me in.”

Her face turned a little red when she said meekly, “Erm, I took the liberty to send my personal belongings. I know it’s a bit much but I hope you don’t mind. We had to modify the probe a little because the transporter’s pattern sequencer buffer was just not big enough. I could have brought it with me but Blippy doesn’t have space for such a large case.”

“Oh, Marc,” she said huskily, “I’m so happy I’m going to be with you soon. I hope you can sleep tonight. Blippy’s warp core hum is really soothing, and I know I’ll fall asleep quite easily.”

She giggled. “I’m just too excited to say anything coherent so I better stop. See you later, Marc.”

Marc watched longingly at her fingers that touched her soft lips, and they blurred the picture as soon as they were too close to the camera.

Millia watched apprehensively at Utuck and Frander who were sitting behind her console. “This is a classical encryption,” Frander said to Utuck, “I have a routine that will fix this in a few clicks.”

“Guys,” Millia said firmly, “before you do anything, I want to be absolutely sure that no one will find out what happened.”

“The encryption method is ancient,” Frander explained, “anyone who’s familiar with it can decrypt it in a flash. So, it will look like you are accessing it with the right credentials.”

“And that means that no alarms will be triggered,” Utuck added.

Millia understood what they were saying. She reasoned that if it really was such a classified dossier, it would have been updated with the current level of encryption. Her curiosity won over her anxiety and she said, “Okay, go for it.”

It didn’t take long before Frander said, “And we’re in! See? It only took me a few ticks!”

“Right, let me see,” Millia said while moving her chair towards the screen.

Her eyes grew to the size of saucers when she saw the large number of entries that were visible. She recognized the old language and one entry intrigued her the most: ‘DNA manipulation’.

“This is indeed very interesting,” she said preoccupied as she read the other entries. “I think I can take it from here.”

Utuck chuckled. “Don’t get too distracted. You know you’re flying with the Supremacy and us. And you know he doesn’t like anyone being late.”

Millia checked the time on the screen and said, “I still have about four small cycles.”

“That’s cutting it really short,” he said, “but I assume you don’t need much time to prepare.”

As Millia kept reading the captions she raised her eyebrows and grumbled, “I’m a grown up girl by now, Utuck.”

“I think it’s time we leave her alone,” Frander hissed as he pulled at his friend’s shirt.

Millia opened the ancient file and totally forgot everything that was around her. The language used was a derivative of the current Dunian standard, but because of her medical training, she fully understood the contents of the document.

“Oh, my Dunia,” she whispered as she moved to the next section of the document. “The sneaky bastards!”

Tillyn woke up with a start. The soothing hum of the warp core made her realize in an instant where she was. Lazily, she stretched her body. As she adjusted the comfortable chair into an upright position she said, “Good morning Aris. Anything to report?”

“All is fine, Tillyn. Our arrival at Earth will be in five small cycles.”

“Good,” she said as she stood. The view outside Blippy was beautiful, which was one of the perks of exploring the galaxy.

With a sad smile she remembered the conversation she had with her father two cycles ago. He was shocked by the fact that she was pregnant. She recalled it was hard not to lash out to him, knowing all too well she was in this situation because of his shortsighted decision.

But then, she realized she actually loved the prospect of becoming a mother. No other Dunian ever had the opportunity to create a new life.
