The courtroom was packed. It was rare that a Dunian had to stand trial. Observer Sebo stood with his head held high in front of the semi-circle of senior Dunians.

Everyone stood at once when the Supremacy stepped into the large room. It took the old man quite a bit of effort to take his seat but as soon as he sat down, he said with a remarkably strong voice, “This session is now open. Since I have filed the case, I will recuse myself and hand it over to the serving judge.”

The judge stood and as he bowed slightly to the Supremacy, he said with deference, “Supremacy, the court will proceed as the decree states; The accused will hear the allegations against him.”

The man next to the judge stood and read from a tablet, “At four cycles before the Sun festival, an emergency beacon arrived. It was sent from explorer Tillyn’s ship, which was situated in the epsilon quadrant. Her ship was hit by space debris and protocol zeta thirteen was initiated. A rescue team was assembled and, as they were preparing for the mission, Observer Sebo canceled the rescue. The reason was that the rescue team had to be available for any distress calls during the Sun festival. The accused ignored the highest emergency protocol and caused an unnecessary delay in rescuing explorer Tillyn.”

The judge looked down on Observer Sebo and asked, “What is your response to these accusations?”

The corpulent man huffed and grumbled, “Not guilty!”

With a raised eyebrow the judge said, “Your response has been noted. Now the prosecution will bring two recordings to hear. The first recording is your conversation with second Observer Masha. The second is the recording with you and the Supremacy.”

“But, but, that is preposterous!” Observer Sebo boomed. “Those recordings are private!”

“They were, Observer Sebo, ” the judge responded calmly, “until you were accused of a serious crime.”

“A serious crime? By Dunia!” screamed the chubby man. “What are you talking about? She has arrived safely on Dunia!”

“Observer Sebo!” the judge’s voice thundered in the courtroom, “One more word and you will be removed from this court, and we will continue without you! Do you understand?”

The observer’s face became bright red as he nodded curtly.

“Now,” the judge resumed in a calm voice while he addressed the man next to him, “Please play the two recordings.”

“The first recording is four cycles before the Sun festival between second Observer Masha and the accused,” the judge’s assistant declared.

“An emergency beacon just arrived in the system, Observer Sebo, ” echoed Masha’s voice in the courtroom.

Observer Sebo’s voice sounded stressed, “What? Whose is it?”

“It’s from Explorer Tillyn, Observer Sebo. She is exploring the newly discovered planet in the epsilon quadrant. The aliens seem to call it Earth.”

“Stop giving me irrelevant information, Masha. What happened? Is she in danger?”

“Well, erm, it seems that they are in their pre-space travel stage and there is a significant amount of orbital pollution. Some of the larger debris collided with her vessel and that drained her batteries to a very low level.”

“I told her to take the extra battery. But no, she stubbornly opted for the extra communication equipment. So, I assume she had to execute protocol zeta nine?”

“Actually, the extremely low battery reserves forced her to use zeta thirteen, Observer Sebo.”

“Thirteen? Are you sure?”

“Yes, Observer Sebo.”

“Great, and this just before the Sun festival.”

“Shall I start the rescue procedure, Observer Sebo?”

“Let me have a look Masha. It’s going to be hard to assemble a team that is willing to miss the festivities. I suggest postponing her rescue until after the great ceremony.”

“How about we find volunteers who are willing to help Tillyn, Observer Sebo?”

“No! She needs to learn to heed advice when given by a senior Observer.”

“Of course, Observer Sebo.”

There was a palpable silence in the room. The assistant cleared his throat before he said, “The second recording is at the Supremacy’s office, three cycles before the Sun festival.”

“Observer Sebo,” the Supremacy’s recorded voice echoed in the room, “what brings a busy man like you to my office today?”

Observer Sebo’s answer boomed, “It seems that a test flight has been moved forward and that you have approved it, Supremacy.”

“Ah, yes. It seems that this excellent team suddenly had some spare time, and they were very keen to test the new warp core. Who am I to not approve such a noble request? I’m happy that the youth are so involved with science.”

“That team is the best we have, Supremacy! They should stay available for emergencies. Our resources are quite limited.”

“What do you consider an emergency, Observer Sebo? Can you elaborate on that?”

“Well, we need to able to protect our planet and we need to be able to rescue Dunians who are in danger.”

The Supremacy’s icy response echoed over the court’s attendants, “I see. So, from what level do you consider that a Dunian is eligible for a rescue? From level zeta fourteen?”

Observer Sebo’s huff was clearly audible before he sneered, “Zeta fourteen doesn’t even exist!”

“So, you do agree that zeta thirteen is the highest emergency protocol we have.”

There was silence.

The Supremacy’s voice sounded relaxed, “Great, I think we have discussed our matters. Now, I’m afraid I need to attend to some urgent problems. It was nice of you to come. Have a pleasant day, Observer Sebo.”

“Supremacy.”

The silence was deafening after the recording stopped. The judge cleared his throat before he addressed the accused, “Observer Sebo please confirm it is your voice on both recordings.”

He sighed deeply while he hung his head. Suddenly he looked up and as he stared at the Supremacy he said, “I can confirm it is my voice on both recordings.”

A wave of bustle emerged from the spectators’ section and the Judge had to raise his voice, “Order in the courtroom!” Their murmur died down quickly and the assistant stood again.

“During the rescue of Explorer Tillyn there was an opportunity to take images of her ship,” he said while a large screen lit up, displaying the extensive damage of Tillyn’s ship. A joint gasp emerged from the people present when the enormous spike that pierced through the ship’s side was shown in the next image.

“The technician has stated that the spike just missed the batteries and that the damage to the ship caused the emergency zeta thirteen, which confirms the legitimacy of explorer Tillyn’s request.”

“Thank you,” said the Judge to his assistant. Then he addressed Observer Sebo, “Since you refused any representatives to help you with this case I ask you; do you have anything to say for your defense?”

“I stick with my statement that I’m not guilty. If Explorer Tillyn had taken the extra batteries, she would have been able to stay on the ship until the rescue team could have arrived.”
