Tillyn looked pleased at the second chair she had bolted to the metal floor. Her Aris had found the exact same chair stashed away in an obscure corner of the huge storage. It had been covered with a large sheet of carbon fiber and after a thorough scrubbing, it looked even better than the one next to it. It was touch and go to see if the bolts would interfere with the warp core inducers, but after cutting them at the exact length, the flux indicators on the control panel were in the green again.
She knew Blippy, her new pet name for her ship, would be stuffed to the gunnels with extra gear. It took her almost twenty cycles to mount the warp core and its emitters and installing the power core was even a bigger challenge because she had to create a separate housing for it. It took her thirty cycles to get it safely mounted and connected to the main distribution.
She and Marc had been sending messages. Every time the probe arrived it was the highlight of the cycle. She had trouble keeping her pregnancy secret, but she didn’t want to burden him with it until she was pretty sure her body accepted that she was carrying a child.
It still could go wrong, even up to ninety cycles. As was the annoying morning sickness that she really hated. Millia explained that her body was behaving as if the child in her was a parasite. The morning sickness was a symptom of her body ‘fighting’ against the ‘alien intrusion’. How apt was Millia’s analogy! Actually, she didn’t like the idea, but it did make sense.
There have been moments she wished she was a Dunian, especially when her voluptuousness prevented her from reaching the last bolt in the far corner. Plus, the fact she was now pregnant, which caused her breasts to feel tender, and like her body; everything was getting bigger.
Every cycle she looked in the mirror to check if her belly was getting bigger. She felt bloated but her stomach was as flat as before. Millia told her that from fifty to seventy cycles it would start to show.
“Hey Tillyn,” Utuck said upbeat while he walked to her. “I have good news!”
With some trouble she stood from the chair and as she hugged him, she asked, “What is it, Utuck?”
“Do you remember I said your batteries were too heavy? I just received approval to replace the fighter’s battery pack.”
“Yay!” Tillyn exclaimed. “Just as well I didn’t start with the housing.”
He nodded. “One thing though, you need to find a few flow enhancers to hook up these beasty batteries.”
“Of course,” she said while rolling her eyes. “Aris?” she said in the air, “Do you have enough information to find enhancers for these animalistic batteries?”
“I’ll see if I can ‘nick’ a few,” her assistant replied.
“That would be grand!” Tillyn replied and as she gently shooed the hovering construct away, she said, “Off you go then.”
“I don’t know,” Utuck said a little uneasy when it disappeared in a soft poof, “Are you sure your Aris is fine?”
Tillyn giggled. “He is just teasing us. He likes to throw in some Earthling words.”
“Right,” he said while he walked around the ship, “Looks like you are ahead of your planning.”
She huffed. “Since it had been in a crash, all the plating has to be resealed again.”
“Ow,” he responded glumly.
“I would have done it anyway,” Tillyn replied dryly. “It’s eighty large cycles old and I don’t want to take any risks. Any leak would result in my death because there’s no escape possible.
“I know,” Utuck said as he eyed the large Plexiglas dome on top of the ship, “you need four people to secure the dome.”
“That one is the least difficult,” Tillyn said as she pointed at three on the side, “I need to have support construction for those too.”
“Hmmm,” he said as he was scratching his chin. “My father might have a solution for that.”
“Are you sure he is willing to help?”
He chuckled. “Since he knows you’re building your own ship he keeps asking about it.”
Marc admired the small Christmas tree he had made. The tiny lights flickered like candles and the minuscule ornaments glittered in the light. It was a little gift he wanted to send to Tillyn.
It was a bummer that she wasn’t with him and that he had to wait at least another month before she arrived.
The progress on her ship, Blippy, was encouraging and his contractor had almost finished the extension on his penthouse. It was a closed veranda, built to hide Tillyn’s ship. She had used his tablet’s height as a reference for the dimensions of the ship, which came to fifteen, by ten, by eight feet. The veranda could easily house it.
It was funny to finally see her assistant. He had named it her ‘personal shoplifter’ and he had laughed his head off when she confided to him that Aris liked to use the term ‘nick’ for getting components from storage.
He still had trouble believing that her father had corrupted his daughter’s personal assistant. It was a heart-breaking story how Tillyn was changed into an Earth woman and that she and her father were not on speaking terms.
Deep down he could understand why he had done it, especially after Tillyn’s horrific escape from a hostile planet, but he couldn’t believe the old man’s stubbornness not to apologize.
He had been playing with the thought of giving her a small friendship necklace, consisting of yin and a yang parts. Maybe it was a little too much of a cheesy gesture, but it would give her a little more than just words.
It was almost time, and he was delighted to see the sparkles appear above the carpet again. He could hardly wait for the dancing lights to get blurry and was surprised to see something bigger appear than normal that was neatly positioned on his tablet.
