Millia still couldn’t believe what she’d heard when Tillyn had contacted her. From her own experience she knew Tillyn’s father could be extremely persuasive, but she had never expected he could’ve done such a drastic thing. Deep down she understood his motivation, but it clearly was an act of fear, and that had clouded his reasoning.
With sturdy steps, she followed the long corridor leading to the technical department. She had agreed to meet up with Tillyn and Utuck to witness the rebirth of an Aris.
She truly admired Tillyn’s heroic act to lure her compromised Aris into standby modus. Their ability to shift their presence was a great asset but not if the system had gone rogue.
She was really keen to know what had happened on Tillyn’s ship and she had high hopes the new Aris could give them an answer. Tillyn’s initial acquaintance with her new Aris was crucial and she had to be totally open about what had happened.
Impatiently she waited for the door to slide open and was relieved that three people were waiting for her.
“Millia,” said Tillyn warmly while she pulled her into a hug, “I’m so excited, I can’t wait any longer.”
“Hi Utuck,” Millia murmured while she still was embraced by Tillyn.
“Right, Tillyn,” Utuck said upbeat, “Frander has done most of the miracle work so he will connect the power core on your mark.”
Millia watched how Frander carefully pushed the glowing core into the Aris’s cavity and the small device shuddered a little when the core connected.
“You do know how to wake it up don’t you, Tillyn?” he asked her.
Tillyn nodded and took a deep breath before she said with a strong voice, “Start, code, five, four, eight, six, nine, nine, two, four, eight, nine.”
A female voice sounded, “Your Aris has successfully started, please wait for the initial diagnostic to finish.”
A few moments later, the small body slowly lifted from the workbench. “I am Aris, your Automated Responsive Information System,” it said with a friendly voice, “Accessing memory.”
“There seem to be a mismatch with certain components,” it said.
“That’s correct Aris,” Tillyn said quickly, “you have a new body.”
“That is not the only thing that happened, is it?”
“No,” Tillyn said softly, “I’m afraid you were compromised and we decided to rebuild you.”
“That explains a lot of entries I can’t align with. I’m sorry that my corrupted version changed you into an Earth woman.”
“Can you confirm that the replicator had been restarted?” asked Millia.
“Yes,” replied the assistant softly, “it was believed that it was better for Tillyn to be an Earthling in order to survive on the planet.”
“Would you have done the same?” asked Tillyn her new Aris.
“No, because the probes proved the planet to be safe enough to survive.”
“By Dunia,” Frander gushed.
“What you have done to get my old version into standby mode, wouldn’t have worked for me. During the last five cycles my old version was deteriorating at a fast pace.”
“Oh, by Dunia, what would have happened?” asked Utuck.
“A total break down.”
“Alright!” Tillyn said loudly, “I want to know if you can accept what has happened and that you can be my assistant for the foreseeable future.”
“You have told me what I wanted to know, and I understand your motivation to build a new me. So yes, I’m happy to be your Aris.”
Tillyn nodded. She smiled happily as she said, “Well, you’ll be in for an adventure.”
“Bring it on,” Aris said with a lower voice, “that’s an Earthly saying.”
Tillyn laughed and said, “Oh please, Aris, keep them for later.”
Tillyn woke up with a start while her head was stuffy. She had dreamed of Marc again. His sad face looked horrible.
She felt strange and as she stepped into the cleansing cabin, a sudden nausea came over her.
“Aris,” she moaned, “can you get me some water please?”
In an instant a mug of water hovered in front of her. Thankfully, she grabbed the mug out of the air and as she took small sips, she hoped her stomach would calm down again.
She sighed deeply when her nausea slowly disappeared, knowing it clearly happened because she was about to confront her father with his major mistake.
She had discussed it with her Aris, and she was pleased her assistant understood why she wanted to do it in such a dramatic way.
“You should go to Millia after you visit your father, Tillyn,” her Aris suggested.
“Why Aris?” she said curtly as she was stepping into the special gown she had created for this occasion, “I’m just nervous facing my father.”
“Perhaps,” he responded, “but according to my observations there’s more going on in your body Tillyn.”
“Alright,” she sighed while she struggled to close the last little hook of the dress, “It has been only a cycle since I’ve seen her.”
“You need to go to you father now, Tillyn.”
“I know, I know,” she said while she grabbed the husk of her old Aris from the table. Luckily her father’s office was just a short walk away from her place and with sturdy steps she followed the curvy road to the majestic building.
She took a few breaths while she was transported to the floor where the Supremacy had his office and as soon as she stepped out her heart was beating in her mouth.
She looked at herself in the reflected glass and knew she looked stunning. All her feminine curves were delicately displayed, and she didn’t care what her father said about it. She was pleased her high heels were hidden by the many layers of her gown. She had even used eyeliner to emphasize her beautiful brown eyes.
“Tillyn!” Katlynn hissed, “it’s time!”
She turned to her father’s assistant and nodded curtly as she glided towards her father’s office. She couldn’t keep from smiling when the young girl’s mouth fell open. It was the confirmation she needed; she was about to wow her father as well.
As usual the old man was staring out of the large windows, and it irritated her that the outside world was more important than her.
“Father,” she said curtly.
Slowly he turned and it took him a moment before he said, “Tillyn.”
Her stomach flipped when she saw his disapproving look. “Private mode!” he grumbled while he slowly walked to his desk.
“So, you seem to embrace being an Earthling,” he said condescendingly.
Without a word she stepped towards him and as she fished a small pad out of her sleeve she said, “I have no other choice.”
“You did,” he spat, “you decided to go to the epsilon quadrant.”
She handed him the pad and said, “I thought we were in agreement, but it seems you were not happy enough.”
He glanced at the text and said defiantly, “No!”
He deliberately dropped the tablet on his desk and continued, “Your Aris failed you the last time so I decided to make some alterations.”
“Did you know that the last alterations done on the Aris’s software was five hundred large cycles ago?”
“Well, that explains it,” he grumbled, “it was about time someone had a good look at it again.”
“A technician whose hobby is programming, hardly qualifies to change such delicate software,” she said bitterly.
“Well, at least you are back,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.
“Guess what turned me into a full-blown Earthling father?” she spat.
“I still don’t understand why you allowed yourself to become an Earthling,” he growled.
“Then I’ll explain it to you in simple enough language that you can understand,” Tillyn deadpanned.
She continued, ignoring her father’s cry of unbelief, by saying in a condescending tone, “When you mess with an AI, you’ll get a crooked system that doesn’t work well.”
