It was Wednesday about 11:30 AM. I was sitting near one of the upper windows in a study room of Nebelgutt’s third floor. Anna was next to me fiddling with her camera. I had a full view of the gate outside in the wintery wood. It had snowed a bit last night and the trees had been crusted with a fine icy powder.
“About a half hour to go,” I said.
“I hope Duane shows up Michael, he seems like a pretty decent guy. He didn’t text Coral back yet but maybe he’s just thinking things over.”
“I hope you’re right Anna. Are you having trouble with your camera?”
“Kind of,” she scowled. “I’m not sure what is going on. Whenever I have tried to take pictures with my NBD 64K here in the building or on the grounds the picture comes out weird. My cell phone camera works just fine. In other places my big camera works too; I went out in the country and took some winter shots and they were perfect.”
“Hmmm,” I said. “How do you mean weird?”
“It’s like when I took a pic of us at that old farm a few months ago and it was all old-timey. It must be a magical effect. I’m thinking about asking Rayven or Sabrine since Thriza isn’t here.”
“Can I see?”
“Sure,” she said.
Anna was right. The screen of her camera showed several pictures of my coven-sisters in various locales around Nebelgutt and they all seemed like they had been taken in the 1920’s. The faces were correct but there was no color and the clothing was off.
“Interesting effect,” I commented. “Is this one of Rayven? I like her hat.”
Anna smiled. “I believe it is called a cloche. Then there are these pics.” she showed me another one. It was a close-up of a vehicle’s grill and their was another of a car’s tire. They looked like they were of a 1920’s style car.
“How did you get those?” I asked.
“These pop up whenever I try and take a shot of anything even remotely sexual. So, like, this grill picture should be Sabrine wearing a latex catsuit.”
I looked at Anna with a sly smile.
“What?” she said, smiling. “We don’t kink-shame here Michael.”
“I know,” I said. “I wonder if your strange pictures are related to that old car in the basement? Thriza said that with the amount of magic that has permeated this place for a couple centuries now strange things can happen. Maybe that car is linked to all of this.”
“Where did that old car come from?” asked Anna.
“That’s another odd thing, nobody seems to know.”
“You’ll figure it out,” said Anna. She paused and smiled. My eyes followed hers toward the window. “Look who we have here!”
Duane’s truck rolled to a halt near the ruined gates of Nebelgutt. He got out. He had a backpack and a laptop bag. He looked around, unsure of what to do.
I got up and pulled on my jacket, gloves, and scarf. “Anna, get Coral and Sabrine. I’ll teleport down there and welcome him.”
“You sure you want to do that Michael?”
“What?” I asked.
“I mean ... you and teleportation ... you tend to have some trouble.”
“I got this. Get the girls.”
“Okay,” she said dubiously as I started my spell.
Well, Anna was right. I teleported but once again I missed the mark, popping back into reality four feet above the snowy ground near the crumbling gates of Nebelgutt. I hit the ground with a sharp cry of pain. Duane rushed to my side and helped me up.
“Jesus Christ Michael, you appeared out of thin air!” he exclaimed.
I groaned. “Yeah, I know. I was trying to teleport.”
“Holy shit! You weren’t lying. Magic is real. I don’t believe it.”
“That’s fine,” I grunted. “I was supposed to arrive on the ground, not in the air. God my ankle hurts.”
Duane crouched down and felt my stricken joint. “Yeah, you definitely bruised it – I don’t think you sprained it though.”
“Okay, okay ... let me walk here ... it’ll be okay.” I hobbled around a bit and regained my footing.
“Are you going to be okay?” asked Duane.
“Yeah. I’m glad you decided to join me and the ladies.”
“Tentatively,” said Duane. “I have some questions but after that display one has been answered. Magic is real.”
“Yeah it is. Let’s go to the house. I’ll show you around and we can meet some of the other girls.”
Together Duane and I headed toward Nebelgutt. He walked. I hobbled.
Duane looked around the entry as we stepped into Nebelgutt. “This place just tells me haunted house,” he commented. “Is it all like this?” We shed our winter attire.
“No,” I said. “I think Anna said it had a ‘Gothic vibe’ when she walked in. “We maintain the first floor like this for visitors and other things. If I invoked the illusion we use to hide this place you would see ruins. It’s quite convincing.”
“Cool,” said Duane. “I don’t know if I want to live in a haunted house though.”
