Shelia Morris, senior CIU technician looked up from her laptop as she heard the door of her lab area open. She took off her reading glasses and pushed her office chair away from her desk. Her ash blonde hair was tied back and she was wearing a lab coat. “Welcome to my lair, gentlemen,” she said as Detectives Mark Kronig and Justin Duke walked into the area. Justin was wearing his trademark green overcoat and Mark had on a winter coat.
“What do you have Shelia?” asked Justin.
“Quite a bit,” began Shelia. “It’s amazing what you can get done when you’re not going to a murder scene every other day.”
The detectives sat down. Shelia was right; things had slowed down over the last several weeks but they were all still on edge.
“There have been four victims so far. The first was Carter Schmidt, 17, death by homicide according to the coroner,” said Shelia.
“This is the one with the weird ritual items,” commented Mark.
“Right,” continued Shelia. “And a dead guinea pig. The second victim was a homeless veteran named David Gregory, 39, death by homicide. We don’t have much background on him correct?”
“Yeah,” said Mark sadly. He was a veteran himself, having served as a battalion S-2 in Afghanistan. “I hate to see this type of thing. Sergeant Gregory had been in and out of the VA and was struggling with addiction. The man deserved better.”
“I hear you partner,” said Justin.
“Moving on we have our couple. The female was a student at SUNY, the Albany campus specifically, named Zoey Mulligan, age 21, death by homicide. The male was named Aaron Heeld, age 22, death by homicide.”
“We got some footage of the couple going into the alley off a security cam on the other side of the street but nothing of the perp, which means he was waiting for them. Our initial guess was right; the two victims seemed pretty amorous when they went into that alley,” said Mark.
“Nothing from from the video footage earlier?” asked Shelia. “I mean the suspect had to enter the alley, right?”
“Nothing conclusive,” commented Mark.
“Mark ran the VA angle with Sergeant Gregory and I did a bit of internet digging on Carter Schmidt. That poor kid was into some weird stuff,” said Justin.
Mark nodded, this was a review for him.
“He was part of several different social media groups interested in the occult and black magic. His internet search history was pretty similar. His family background was so-so at best. Most of our follow-ups found some pretty strange people with some esoteric interests,” continued Justin.
“So basically you two met every New Age weirdo in upper state New York,” commented Shelia.
Justin snorted. “Not all of them just most of them.”
