The One Where Nothing Will Ever Be The Same

A R I E L L E

It’s well past two in the afternoon and I’m sitting in the hotel room, quietly watching the television so as to not disturb Nate. By the time we’d gotten up here and fallen asleep it was well past five in the morning and so I figured it was best to let him sleep. There hasn’t been any news about Ahmir, so I’m sure that he’s doing fine since Isabella promised she’d phone if there’s any news.

I flip through the channels, unable to decide on something. There isn’t exactly anything enticing on and it’s left me watching home renovation shows, which is the same thing over and over and over again. How anyone can watch them is fucking beyond me.

I’m just about to decide to settle on some TLC show when there’s a buzzing sound within the room. I check my phone, panic rising over my body when I realize that it’s Nate ‘s phone and it sounds like someone is calling him. I rush quietly to the device, pressing the answer button and then padding to the bathroom for some privacy.

Once I’ve closed the door, I answer with a standard hello.

“Ari?” Isabella’s voice fills my ear and I can’t help the nervous feeling that appears. Did something bad happen? “Where’s my brother?”

“He’s still sleeping,” I tell her. “I didn’t want to wake him.”

“Oh, good. I’m glad he got some sleep. Listen—”

I nervously fidget with the small towel tossed on the countertop, needing to do something to ease the nerves.

“My dad just saw the doctor and it’s good news.”

I breathe a sigh of relief. “Thank God.”

“Says he can go home tonight! So you can let Nate know whenever he gets his ass out of bed that he can come see Dad once more before he leaves to go home.”

“That’s such good news. I’m so happy for him. For all of you.” I chuckle uncomfortably, “You scared the fuck outta’ me when I heard your voice, seriously.”

“Shit, I’m sorry. I should’ve started with the good news.” Her laughter fills the receiver and I join her. “Anyways, yeah, you two can come see him here anytime before eight. He’s checking out then.”

“Okay, great. I’ll let him know, Isabella.”

“We’ll see you guys later.”

When I hang up the phone, I exhale a long breath again, thankful that it was good news. I don’t know if I could handle having to tell Nate bad news about his father. I don’t even want to think about it, fuck.

I quietly leave the bathroom, seating myself back in the chair in the main room to continue watching television. I only relax for a few minutes and then I hear a noise from the bed and I twist to see Nate turning over. He gives me an adorable half asleep smile and then drops his head against the pillow, giving a heavy sigh when he begins to stretch.

“What time is it?” He asks, trying to glance at the clock but he ends up rubbing sleep from his eyes instead.

“Almost two thirty.”

At the sound of that, he jumps up in the bed in a panic. “Shit! Why didn’t you wake me up?” He tosses the blankets off his body and, in only his boxer-briefs, walks across the room towards his bag.

He’s able to pull on a fresh shirt before I can inform him, “Nate, Isabella called.”

He stops to stare incredulously at me, one leg in his jeans. He trips forward on his pants, but manages to catch himself on the mattress before he hits the floor. “What? What’d she say?”

“Your father’s being released. He’s been doing really good since we saw him.”

The news is so good to his ears that he whispers, “Oh, my God,” as he sits the corner of the bed and sinks his head in his hands. His jeans are still around his ankles and it brings a smile to my face seeing how relieved he is. “Did she say anything else?”

I stand from my chair and meander over to him. When I’m close enough, he extends a hand and pulls me to stand close to him. With his hands on my hips, mine find his hair and I play with it as he leans his head back to look up at me.

“We have until eight to go see your dad. He’ll be out by then.”

He sighs, leaning into my stomach. “Do you wanna’ go right away? Or have something to eat first?” As I speak, I run my fingers through his hair absentmindedly. “You haven’t eaten since yesterday, you must be starving.”

“Would you mind if we grabbed something there, at the cafeteria?”

“No,” I answer, “I’ll go wherever you go, babe.”

He gives me a grateful smile. “We’ll head home right after he’s released.”

I furrow my eyebrows when my eyes meet his. “Are you sure you don’t want to spend a few extra days with your family? Make sure your dad is all healed and everything?”

He goes quiet, averting his gaze. He seems to stare off into space, as if he’s deep in thought about something.

Am I missing something? Did I say something wrong?

My mind goes fucking haywire, wondering why the mood has suddenly shifted. He removes his hands from my body and exhales deeply as he stands to his feet. He’s quick to yank his jeans up his legs and as he’s doing the button on his fly, I call his name in the form of a question.

He nods towards the bed, “Can you just have a seat for a second?”

My eyes shift from side to side, unsure of where this is going or even what is happening. I feel like he’s about to tell me something that’s going to upset me but I really don’t have the faintest clue as to what that would be.

So, I carefully seat myself on the edge of the bed and watch him as he paces a few times in front of me. “Nate, what’s going on?” I fidget with my fingers as I ask the question, nervous because of his sudden change in behaviour.

He seats himself beside me, grabbing my hands in his. However, his eyes still don’t meet mine, they stay focused on our connected fingers. “What did you think of my family when you first met them?”

I’m so fucking confused, which means I respond with, “What?”

“When I took you to Elijah’s event ... What were your first impressions of my family?”

I open my mouth to speak, but I stutter. “They’re nice people and you all seem to love one another deeply, despite the confusing situation with step parents and half siblings and shit.”

He nods his head, “Anything stand out to you?”

“No, should something have?” A nervous chuckle falls from my lips that fills the relative silence. The only thing that really is heard is the television which I had set to a fairly low volume since Nate was sleeping and I didn’t want to disturb him.

“I’m kinda’ the black sheep of the family, babe.”

I suppress the desire to peer at him skeptically.

The thing is, I never got that vibe from a single member of his family. Not even Elijah who has no blood relation to him. In fact, he seems to be greatly loved by all of his relatives that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.

They all have their nicknames for him, smile when he enters a room, and seem disappointed whenever he leaves.

“What do you mean?”

“When I was younger, I got into lots of shit. Especially when I was a teenager. I was so much trouble for my parents and then for Mum and Elijah. That’s a large part of why I moved away. When I started racing and getting interested in cars and shit, I had to leave.”

He sighs, rubbing his thumb over the back of my hand softly.

“There was this one race I won when I was like, eighteen, and the dude that came in second wasn’t happy about it. So he beat the piss out of me.” He finally looks me in the eyes then and I can see the glossiness to them as he shares a piece of vulnerability. “I thought my Mum was gonna’ lose it. Her and Elijah kicked me out, my dad reamed my ass, and Bella didn’t talk to me for fourteen months.”

“Shit—”

“When I moved here, they weren’t stupid. They all knew how I could afford my house, my car, my life without working nine to five. They all know I still do it and they aren’t happy about it. They won’t bring it up anymore but they definitely aren’t thrilled with the idea that I’m doing illegal shit. They also know I won’t stop ‘cause I love it so they’ve just given up on me.”

I swallow a lump in my throat, surprised to hear all of this. Every member of his family has always looked at him adoringly, been happy for his happinesses, and very welcoming to me. I’m shocked to hear that there actually does seem to be a rift in the family.

But I guess things aren’t always what they seem.

“I’m sorry, Nate.”

He shrugs. “What do you have to be sorry for? It’s not your fault whatsoever. It’s just one of those things that happens. The divorce and my Mum’s second marriage fucked me up a little more than the others. Elijah’s a nice guy, it’s just that when he and Mum first started going out it was weird. I didn’t want him to be my dad so it was something I needed to adjust to. I needed to realize that he was never trying to replace my dad and that he was trying to make Mum happy. He still makes Mum happy.”

He’s right that it’s not my fault, but I feel a sense of empathy for his situation. I know what it’s like to be the black sheep of the family. I also know what it’s like to have problems with relatives. Although, what I consider problems with family are a bit more than stereotypical problems.

Plus when I say that I’m the black sheep, it means that my only left standing relative hates the very day I was born.

“I guess what I’m getting at is that my family situation is kinda’ fucked up.”

“Hey,” I nudge him with my elbow lightly, “cheers to that, right?”

He laughs, but it doesn’t reach his eyes.

I understand what he’s saying without him actually uttering the words. “So you’d rather just go and spend a few hours with your family and then we’ll drive home?” He nods his head before I question, “You sure you won’t want to spend the night here and leave in the morning?”

A small smile curls on his lips. “I’d rather sleep beside you in my bed.”

By the time we’re on the road and heading for home, it’s nearly eight in the evening.

We spent close to five hours with Nate ‘s family and it was a very nice visit for Nate. Despite what he told me earlier about being the black sheep of the family, they all treated him very well and everyone was able to share stories and laughs, happy about Ahmir’s good health.
