LUCA

Stepping into Cain’s office, I’m unsure of what to expect and that very fact has me so nervous, that I’m nauseous.

The biggest warning going off in my brain is that it wasn’t that long ago that I had his niece up against my shower wall with my cock buried in her, and her moaning my name. Did he find out? Did he see something in the way that Raven reacted to me saving her tonight that has him thinking something is up?

On my walk to his office, I did notice the cameras he mentioned earlier positioned throughout the hallway. I hadn’t paid enough attention on my journey to Raven’s room, but I was quite literally fighting for my life at the time.

He’s hidden them very discreetly, but if you know what to look for, you know they exist. There weren’t any in Raven’s room, I’m fairly sure of that. Which has me thankful for two reasons—first, is that he couldn’t see the way I held and comforted Raven after what she’d witnessed, and second is that it would be wildly inappropriate if he did.

He tells me to take a seat across from his desk and as I do so, I casually glance around the office. I don’t see any visible cameras, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. It’s possible he’s forbade them in here because he doesn’t want anyone to witness his most intimate business dealings, but I haven’t figured out if he’s that type of man yet. Would he rather everything be recorded so he knows everything that’s happening around him, or does he not want to even chance certain things being recorded—by this, I mean only in his office—for fear of what his enemies would do with the information?

He’s a control freak, so really, it could go either way. Having them around means that he has easy access to knowledge he isn’t necessarily privy to. It gives him power over those around him.

However, so does not allowing shit to be kept on any sort of record. It gives him a leg up because it’s only word of mouth. It’s he said, he said. No physical proof exists.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about your position in this business, Luca.” He starts rather abruptly, and because I was moderately lost in thought at the idea of whether I’m being documented through a lens somewhere, it startles me slightly.

“Every task I’ve set you up to do, you’ve succeeded. Some of which, with a level of skill that’s rare. Your loyalty has been unwavering thus far and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

“Thank you, Don Cain. That genuinely means a lot to me.”

“The way you reacted today—the way you didn’t hide and cower, but took action, formulated a plan, and kept my family safe—impressed me greatly. You managed to take down four armed men by yourself and in the process, saved my niece’s life.” He pauses, adjusting a pen on his desk. “I’m positive she’ll forever be grateful for what you did.”

In more ways than one.

“After you won the underground fight, I’d pondered giving you a promotion within the ranks. I’ve been thinking it over greatly, but I hadn’t figured out in which area I wanted to slot you. However, with your actions tonight, I’ve decided.”

I find myself holding my breath.

I don’t know how to react to this news either. Just like I didn’t know how to feel coming in here. He’s promoting me? To what? What does this even mean?

I hope Adiv isn’t upset. I don’t want to make him seem inferior in any way at his job. He’s not. I’ve just been continually getting fucking lucky.

The luck will run out at some point and I’m not looking forward to that day.

“I’m appointing you to be Raven’s personal bodyguard.”

My chest tightens. No. This isn’t what I want. It’s the complete opposite of what I’ve been trying to do—avoiding her. How can I possibly maintain distance between us when I’m forced to stay by her side and keep her in line?

She’s the wild child. She’s the one who’s constantly pissing off Cain. Why would I want to risk everything I’ve worked so hard for? With her always doing whatever she can to be defiant towards him, it’ll mean that I’ll be bunched in with that. Every little bad thing she does that I’m unable to straighten out before it gets back to Cain, is something that will reflect negatively on me.

Never mind all of that, but how can I possibly focus with her around me? She clouds all of my senses. Has me thinking in ways I don’t usually think. Has me doing shit that I never do. She’s like my fucking kryptonite.

She makes me crave not only her, but this world. This life. And everything that comes with it.

Because without her, this life doesn’t exist to me.

I didn’t know what this world is like without her in it. I’ve never been able to properly experience it. Which means that she’s far too intertwined in it for me to be able to separate her from it. I can’t simply be attracted to and intrigued by her without being attracted to and intrigued by what her family represent.

“I hope you are able to comprehend how important this job is.”

“Of course.” I was literally shocked into stillness, but when he speaks, I react quickly. “It would be an honour, Don Cain.”

Fuck, I wish something would happen to prevent this from happening. It’s not as if I can say no. You don’t deny the Don whatever he wants.

“I think it’s important for you to be aware of one fact before I officially designate you. Everything else, I’ll be sure to have someone catch you up on before you’re guarding her.”

I nod my head, listening. However, I settle my hands lower, digging my nails into the cushion of the chair where he’s unable to see. How in the fuck did this happen?

“You may have noticed that I keep security close at all hands. At certain points in time, each member of my family—excluding myself, because I’m always protected—have had designated security guards. Usually, they’ll be assigned because it’s a particularly dangerous time, or because one of them is acting out in a way that places them directly in jeopardy.”

The sound of that has me imagining that Raven has likely had many, many guards in her short life.

“Raven, in particular, often acts out. I’ve almost consistently had a man protecting her, but it’s not to her knowledge.” He pauses, creating a dramatic moment. “When she was young, one of the guards attempted to kidnap her. He was going to take her—right from her bedroom—and trade her for a lot of money.”

My throat instantly dries at the sound of that.

“Leo and I heard her screams. We came running, to find that he’d had her trapped in his hold. We managed to wrestle her away, and I thrust my knife into his neck. Took days to clean the blood out of her carpet and to replace her soiled belongings.”

Jesus Christ, it’s no wonder she hates the fucking man. He puts her in unsafe conditions and then makes it worse by violently killing her attacker directly in front of her when she’s merely a child.

I swallow with difficulty, picturing a young, terrified Raven, covered in the blood of the man who attempted to tear her from her family.

And now I’ve just exposed her to the very same thing unintentionally.

“Since that day, she hasn’t taken kindly to the idea of a personal bodyguard, so I haven’t forced it upon her. Of course, I’ve had men watching her here and there, but they’ve been discreet. You’ll be the first man appointed to this job in such an obvious way since the one that attempted to kidnap her.”

I feel like that places even more pressure on me.

“Raven can be—” he pauses, seeming to mull over the correct term, before he finishes with, “—difficult. She’s constantly testing the limits, so she needs someone observant, loyal, and patient. After witnessing how you work, I believe you’re the perfect man for the job.”

“Thank you, Don Cain. I look forward to proving you’re correct, as always.”

Jesus, I really can’t be more up this guy’s ass.

He smiles, that evil smile I’ve grown to relate to him. “Looking forward to it.”

Adiv follows the sand-filled road, whipping past cacti and various dry patches of tall grass.

It’s been a few days since I was designated as Raven’s personal bodyguard and I have to admit, it’s been rather peaceful thus far. Although, we really haven’t seen one another much. After the incident at the house, I think Cain has the family on stricter orders than usual for safety reasons until he figures out who attacked the house.

Which is why he’s decided to send Adiv, myself, and Kash—yes, we have Kermit the fucking frog to help again—on a job together. Some sort of deal went down where Marchetti offered Cain some cash to make up for the fuck up involving Dario. I honestly can’t be sure how in the hell that works, but I don’t know the specifics of the deal either.

We’ve been sent out into the desert, to a remote drop off location that has been decided for everyone’s safety involved. It’s easier to avoid police and other mafia families this way.

As we pull up to the meeting spot, a single crow flies past us, swooping so low that I momentarily fear we’ll hit it with the grille.

One lone car awaits us, along with five men—three of which are holding duffel bags in their hands.

Kash and I stay back as Adiv walks towards them. We’d already gone over the plan on the ride here, so I lean against the hood of the car as Adiv and the one man share a bit of conversation, before the three guys holding the bags of money step forward, placing them down on the sand at Adiv’s feet.

That’s it. That’s all this was supposed to be.

Why it had to happen here of all places, I can’t fathom to figure out, but it’s happened.

After Adiv and the man share a handshake, Kash suddenly pulls a gun he’s hidden in the back waistband of his jeans and lifts it. I sense what’s happening before anything actually occurs, but it’s the equivalent of spotting a tornado in the distance. Like watching the natural disaster as it vacuums up isolated homes in a field. Witnessing it rip up massive trees by their heavy roots.

It’s occurring. I can’t stop it. All I can do is run for my life and find shelter before it kills me.

With a single shot, he manages to kill the man who just interacted with Adiv.

Everyone scrambles and I run to hide behind the car. I duck low, opening the passenger’s side door to fish out the gun I brought.

How fucking moronic of me to not have it on hand.

However, this was supposed to be something simple. Only reason we’re in this mess is because of Kash. Again.

All I can hear is a hail of bullets. Some come from where Adiv is hiding, but most are being fired from where Kash is crouching behind a large rock. They’re flying past me with a whizzing sound, they’re ricocheting off the car and the rocks—there’s so many and so much noise that I can’t decipher one from the next.

Peering around the edge of the car, I aim at one of the men hiding behind a boulder, nicking him in the arm. It causes him to groan out in pain and he stumbles backwards where I’m able to fire a round into his head.

Not long after, I hear another body drop somewhere in the distance, but I can’t be sure who it is. All I do know is that I can see and hear both Adiv and Kash, so it isn’t either of them.

Which means there are only two men left. I make an attempt on the one guy, but he fires back and I collapse in pain as the bullet tears through my shoulder. Angry and in agony, I shoot three rounds in quick succession before I fall back on the sand to clutch at my now bleeding wound.

I can hear Kash running and attempting to kill someone, but he’s unsuccessful. I watch as one man gets into the car they arrived in and tears off into the distance, leaving all of his dead friends behind.

“That’s it. They’re all dead.”

Kash immediately runs for one of the bags of money that’s been left behind. Unzipping it to find a seemingly endless amount of bills inside. He pulls one out, thumbing over the paper, exhaling a groan that sounds almost naughty.

Adiv approaches, checking my shoulder. I wince when he touches it, causing me to inadvertently move the joint, which triggers pain like I’ve never felt before. “It’s a through-and-through. You’ll be fine.”

He opens the back door of his car, retracting a blanket from under the seat and yanks a blade out of his pocket. After cutting two strips, he loops the one under my arm and tells me to breathe deep before he wraps it tightly around the wound, covering it in an attempt to cease the bleeding.

I yell out in pain, seeing stars. “Fuck, Adiv.”
